welcome  to  the  dumpster  fire  !    you  can  call  me  si    ―    she  /  her  pronouns.    i’m  a  27  year  old  web  developer,    and  this  is  where  i  go  to  let  off  some  steam.    i  can  be  spotty,    sometimes  slow  as  all  hell,    but  i  promise  i  don’t  bite  as  long  as  you  play  by  the  rules  which  basically  round  out  to    ❝    don’t  be  a  jerk.    ❞

my  characterization  of  chris  is  based  on  a  combination  of  games,    novels,    and  the  animated  films.    we  do  not  recognize  the  ANDERSON  INTERPRETATION  of  resident  evil  movies  in  this  house    (    but  i’m  happy  to  write  with  characters  from  that  universe    ).    as  always,    if  you  have  any  questions,    feel  free  to  hit  me  up.    disco  is  available  to  mutuals  and  is  definitely  the  best  way  to  get  a  hold  of  me.

IF NAOMI WAS HERE, SHE’D LAUGH HERSELF SILLY. James Holden being left to his own devices is like setting a crate full of explosives next to an open fire, and he sort’ve manages to serve as the ignition switch just by sheer proximity. 

As it is? He just gives an incredulous blink over; it’s not the first time he’s been met with suspicion by others, especially those of the Navy —— even with Avasarala’s resigned approval to his antics, there’s those that like to push, and he’d got himself into a little argument with some who like to question his right to be here on a UNN-controlled base —— he’s too well known, too known for skirting ‘round the edges and neatly avoiding sound allegiance to the UNN or the OPA, and that leaves him in muddy waters when it comes to some —— especially those that dig up his history. 

It didn’t come to blows, of course, because he knows better than that and he’s not a hot-head, but there were threats of sticking him somewhere until they could get ahold of someone who’d vouch for him being here. ❝ They started it, ❞ he says as he goes with the other, a little curt, but it’s with a heave of a sigh.

 A little dry smile curls at the very corners of his mouth, though. ❝ You know, ❞ he says, with a slide of a glance sideways. ❝ You’re only the fifth one to tell me that today. ❞ A little scowl tips the corner of that smile, though. ❝ Thanks. You didn’t have to do that. ❞

        FOR  SOME  REASON,    chris  highly  doubts  holden  is  completely  innocent  in  the  incident,    least  of  all  it’s  incitement.    for  all  the  time  chris  has  known  him     (    admittedly  not  a  long  stretch  by  any  standards    )    the  pilot  has  never  known  holden  to  back  away  from  a  fight,    especially  one  where  he  thinks  he’s  in  the  right.    it  just  so  happens,    more  often  than  not,    chris  finds  himself  agreeing  with  the  man.

❝    sure  they  did,    ❞    chris  says,    a  rise  of  good  -  natured  teasing  in  his  normally  gruff  tone.    chest  heaves  out  a  groan  as  he  sinks  into  the  chair  opposite  holden.    ❝      only  five  ?    must  be  a  slow  day.    ❞

     ❝ what’s with the sudden interest in my bag? ❞ she counters, clutching the strap on her shoulder with a pointed look in his direction.  ❝ could be snacks i’m trying to keep hidden away from you and your unit. could be just me married to my work on my day off. ❞

        THESE  ARE  THE  TIMES  when  throat  aches  for  the  familiar  burn  of  amber  liquid  in  a  short  glass.    the  coffee  in  his  cup  is  no  substitute,    the  paper  work  spread  out  on  the  table  before  him  a  poor  distraction  at  best.    so  many  things  he  should  have  known,    should  have  seen  earlier,    should  have  stopped  and  didn’t.

maybe  if  he  had    . . .    knowing  it  wouldn’t  have  made  a  difference  for  the  GOOD  MAN  they  lost  doesn’t  make  the  failure  any  easier  to  stomach.

a  form  passes  his  periphery,    plenty  recognizable  in  stature  alone.    a  chair  drags  across  the  floor,    and  chris  looks  up  from  his  papers  in  time  to  see  thor  settling  into  the  chair  opposite  him  at  the  common  room  table.    ❝    thought  i  told  everyone  to  GO  HOME,    ❞    chris  says  after  a  moment,    breaking  the  quiet  that  felt  like  it  would  stretch  on  forever  if  he  didn’t.    he  expects  refusal    ;    instead,    a  glass  container  of  food  slides  across  the  table  to  rest  in  front  of  him,    displacing  papers  with  what  chris  suspects  is  intentional  disregard.    there’s  one  just  like  it  on  the  table  in  front  of  thor,     and  even  the  weariest  mind  could  connect  those  dots  easily  enough.

thor  brought  him  food.    FOOD  FROM  HOME.    meaning  he’d  left  this  place,    like  the  rest,    but  he  came  back.    the  realization  silences  any  further  bark  the  captain  might  have  about  ignored  instructions,    and  chris  picks  up  the  provided  fork  to  take  a  bite  of  what  he  thinks  might  be  sweet  potato.

@virusfought​ said: “  don’t act like we didn’t do that shit too.  ”

it  may  be  true,  but  then  again  claire  is  half  tempted  to  remind  her  brother  that  it  somehow  feels  different.  maybe  she  remembers  it  differently,  maybe  her  memory  is  simply  tainted  by  things  someone  the  age  she  had  at  the  time  should  not  have  seen.    “  i’m  just  saying  it’s  dangerous  and  she  should  be  more  careful.  ”    moira’s  just  a  kid,  and  while  claire  understands  the  enthusiasm  and  adrenaline  that  comes  with  this  life,  she  can’t  help  but  wonder  how  right  it  is  to  pull  in  the  fight  people  who  should  be  somewhere  having  a  normal  life.    “  i  was  in  college  playing  beer  pong  at  her  age.  ”    not  for  long,  but  point  still  stands.

HE’S  RIGHT  .  leon  won’t  acknowledge  it  though  .  leon  is  more  of  a  lone  wolf  these  days  ,  but  tends  to  find  all  the  partners  he  doesn’t  TRULY  NEED  .    ❝    don’t  recall  actually  saying  thanks  but  sure  .  ❞  the  agent  quips  with  a  roll  of  his  eyes  .  he  checks  the  magazine  in  his  pistol  before  radioing  hunnigan  .    happening  upon  chris  had  been  a  coincidence  at  best  ,  always  somewhere  invading  where  he  wasn’t  actually  asked  .  

they  are  better  together  .  god  .  and  he  hates  that  shit  .  they  are  both  insanely  talented  and  skilled  in  their  specific  fields  and  they’ve  dealt  with  situations  like  this  to  last  them  a  lifetime  .  

the  gunshots  heard  in  the  distance  made  it  a  little  easier  to  breathe  .  one  good  thing  about  chris’  presence  is  that  he  never  comes  ALONE  .  right  now  .  they  could  use  a  little  backup  .    ❝    then  what  the  hell  are  we  waiting  for  ?  an  invitation  .    time  to  move  your  ass  ,  redfield  .    ❞  he  says  with  a  wink  before  chucking  a  flashbang  out  into  the  open  and  waits  for  it  to  go  off  before  moving  .  

        LEON’S  PRESENCE  AFFIRMS  intelligence  -  fueled  suspicions  responsible  for  bringing  chris  and  his  squadron  to  this  estate  in  the  first  place.    part  of  him  wonders  how  leon  came  by  the  information    ;    a  question  for  a  later  time.    preferably  once  every  man  is  well  away  from  this  place  and  the  dangers  it  hides  within  its  walls.    

not  often  the  captain  finds  himself  FOLLOWING  rather  than  leading,    but  old  training  resurfaces  easily  enough.    chris  wasn’t  always  a  leader  of  men.    hell,    it  isn’t  a  role  he  would  have  ever  chosen.    the  world,    THE  WAR    made  the  choice  for  him.

❝    why  didn’t  you  say  anything  ?    ❞    he  knows  the  answer  before  he  asks    ―    his  sister  was  an  independent  spirit  before  they  ever  lost  their  parents,    and  that  trait  has  only  solidified  in  time.    worse  than  that,    he  knows  there’s  nothing  he  could  have  done  if  she  had.    there’s  no  MAGIC  PILL  to  make  the  nightmares  go  away,    no  combination  of  words  that  can  make  sleep  come  easier.

their  lives  are  the  STUFF  OF  NIGHTMARES.    decades  of  fighting  the  same  war  on  different  fronts,    and  chris  sometimes  makes  the  mistake  of  believing  he  can’t  be  surprised  anymore.    no    . . .    surprised  isn’t  the  right  word  for  it.    there’s  no  surprise  anymore  when  he’s  been  long  conditioned  to  expect  the  worst.    this  feeling  is  that  of  revulsion  and  anger  because  the  worst  is  still  somehow  worse.    the  nightmares  exceed  even  his  worst  imagination,    and  he  still  can’t  be  numb  to  it.

more  and  more  i  find  myself  wondering                   if  it’s  all  worth  fighting  for .

for  a  future  without  fear    …                        YEAH,    IT’S  WORTH  IT .

the  wind  knocked  from  his  lungs  ,  ringing  in  his  ears  .  the  explosion  could  have  been  a  LOT  worse  ,  but  they  aren’t  out  of  the  woods  yet  .  the  concern  in  the  captain’s  eyes  is  met  with  thor’s  usual  quips  to  distract  from  the  severity  of  the  situation  .  anything  to  deter  his  mind  from  just  how  CLOSE  it  was  .    a  heavy  scent  of  sweetness  wafts  through  his  nose  and  suddenly  the  lieutenant  is  painfully  aware  of  the  blood  dripping  down  the  side  of  his  face  .

❝    not  on  your  life,  redfield  .  ❞  thor  laughs  but  quickly  it  fades  into  a  coughing  groan  .  he  swears  the  inside  of  his  lungs  are  going  to  be  caked  with  dirt  for  years  ,  but  its  his  sight  that  is  suffering  in  the  moment  .  seeing  double  isn’t  exactly  a  good  sign  .    an  attempt  at  a  nod  is  made  as  the  soldier  struggles  to  his  feet  ,  its  less  than  graceful  but  thor  knows  they  can’t  stay  put  for  long  .  ❝    what  is  our  next  move  ??  ❞

the  captain  keeps  his  grip  on  thor’s  arm  as  the  other  stands,    offering  silent  support  as  much  as  physical  stability  as  the  other  obviously  struggles  to  get  his  feet  under  him.    the  blood  staining  the  side  of  the  lieutenant’s  face  isn’t  a  good  sign    ―    A  CONCUSSION,    more  likely  than  not    ―    but  he’s  up  and  aware,    and  chris  is  inclined  to  take  his  small  victories  where  he  can  these  days.

IT  WASN’T  ENOUGH.

there  was  a  time  when  chris  used  to  find  comfort  in  the  thought.    he  did  everything  he  could.    now,    it’s  only  serves  to  drive  the  KNIFE  DEEPER.    he  did  what  he  could,    and  in  the  end  it  wasn’t  enough.    there  is  always  more  loss,    more  death,    more  violence.    chris  does  everything  he  can  and  the  world  finds  yet  more  ways  to  win  out  over  his  best  efforts.

NO  WORD  since  they  were  separated.    the  swarm  caught  them  off  -  guard,    gave  them  no  choice  but  to  divide  and  move  towards  the  target  on  their  own.    he  feels  helpless,     but  his  team  is  skilled.    the  best  thing  the  captain  can  do  for  them  is  press  on  and  trust  them  to  do  their  jobs.

chris  is  nearly  on  target  when  he  hears  the  approach  of  heavy  footfalls  down  the  corridor.    gun  raises,    AIMED  AND  READY,    but  finger  lingering  just  shy  of  the  trigger.    it never  pulls.    instead,    chris  recognizes  the  figure  that  rounds  the  corner  with  a  near  twin  of  his  own  weapon  leveled.    instantly,    that  weight  in  the  pit  of  his  stomach  lessens,    and  chris  feels  a  smile  creep  onto  chapped  lips  at  thor’s  words.
