Violet's Witchy Things

For anyone looking to brew up a potion for the purposes of augmentation or blessing, here are some recipes I’ve created that you might find useful.

To prepare them, blend the ingredients in such proportions as feels correct for your purposes (or as supplies allow). Use dried material except where indicated. Place a few spoonfuls in a mason jar with a screwtop lid and fill the jar with a bland oil of your choice. (Vegetable oil of the sort you would buy for cooking works fine.) Screw the lid on tightly and shake well to combine, then leave the jar in a dark dry place for 2-4 weeks to steep.

Once steeped, prepare a clean storage bottle (also with a secure lid) and label with the type of oil and the bottling date. Strain the oil through paper towels or cheesecloth to remove the plant material, then bottle immediately. Store away from sunlight and heat for up to one year. Use for spellwork as you see fit.

(Please note that NONE of these potions are meant to be taken internally by any means. Observe all proper safety measures related to glass, fire, and potentially harmful plants as necessary during preparation.)

Inspired by @windvexer's Simple Ward Against Spirits (and Other Varieties), I spent some time this week creating some wards to hang around our windows and doors..

Instead of premade air-dry clay however I made my own salt dough.

🧂SMALL-BATCH SALT DOUGH🧂

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

2 tbsp table salt

1-2tbsp water*

1 tbsp or less ground dry herbs* (optional)

oven (optional)

rolling pin (optional)

cookie cutters (optional)

toothpick for carving/hole punching (optional)

string (optional)

paint* (optional)

🧂 INSTRUCTIONS🧂

Mix dry ingredients thoroughly then slowly add water until it combines into a dough.

Form into small balls and lightly flatten them/roll out the dough and use cookie cutters/roll dough into uniform log and slice evenly into discs.

If you wish to hang them, poke holes near the top big enough to run string or thread through.

Carve in symbols, sigils, runes, or other designs associated with your intent.

Allow to air-dry or bake in the oven at 250°F for 2 hours, checking often to ensure they are not burning. If still soft in areas after baking, allow to air-dry until all moisture is gone.

If you wish to add colour to make your designs more prominent, do so then allow them the paint to dry.

If you wish to hang your wards, string them up.

*I used storm water collected on the Autumn Equinox and black pepper, cinnamon, and rosemary as my three herbs. The paint I used to ink the runes was acrylic medium mixed with wood ash and rust, thinned with a little storm water.

Fatigue looks at things such as tiredness, drowsiness, exhaustion, weakness, lethargy and memory issues and says “I can do all that and more!”. It leaves you feeling utterly trapped in your own body; unable to move, or even think at times. It fluctuates, but is always looming. 

While this post is open for all, it is written for those who truly relate to this all-consuming feeling (due to ME/CFS, other chronic illnesses, mental illness, or undiagnosed causes). Not all of these may work for you, but hopefully they inspire something that will. For general low energy witchcraft, check out my Bedridden Witch Series!

As always: witchcraft is to be used in addition to proper medical care, treatment and medication; not as a sole alternative.

To draw energy:

If you cannot produce your own, magically created will be just fine!

Crystals. 

I tend to use clear quartz for an energy boost, but trust your intuition; if something calls to you, it’s for a reason. 

Keep it near your bedside table, under your pillow, hold it in your hand or place it on your body where you feel the fatigue most strongly centered. 

When on the go, carry it in your pocket or wear as jewelry. If it is larger, carry in a bag and hold it when you need it. 

Charge using a charging board or the elements.

Waters.

Physically touching water brings me energy. I keep jars of snow, rain, storm, river, stream (etc, etc.) water and will dip my fingers in it and mark that parts of my body where the fatigue feels strongest. Be aware of pollutants and do not ingest!

The same method can be done with tap water (or water charged under the sun or moon)

Drink sun water or sun tea (start with drinking safe water and let it absorb the energies of the sun).

Some people find moon water to be energizing (same process as above, just with the moon).

Other elements.

Note what is energizing to you and what is draining to you. Consider: the sun, moon (and it’s phases), weather (rain, overcast, snow, storm, wind), cold vs. hot, the earth, fire, air, etc.

Once you find which elements are energizing to you, find ways to incorporate them into your life. Examples: jars of different waters or soils, rocks collected from places, candles, and more.

I usually draw energy up from the earth by placing my palms flat towards the earth by the sides of my body. So if I was lying down, my arms would be at my sides with my palms facing down.

Expose yourself or protect yourself. I’ll use my personal experiences as an example here… Rain often energizes me. When it rains, I’ll open my windows, and if I’m able I’ll step outside or collect some water. On the flipside, full moons often drain me. I’ll close my windows and curtains, hang an extra blanket over my bedroom window, use water to paint protective sigils on the window and increase my wards.

Practicing the craft with energy limitations:

Tips and tricks:

I highly recommend preparing things when your energy allows, so it’s always ready to go when you need it (and isn’t dependent on current energy levels). 

Cleansing: Let other things do your work for you. Open your windows/get fresh air, steam or smoke, sound, etc. Bedridden energy cleansing.

Divination: Use apps when physical movement is hard. One card spreads, shorten your pendulum so you don’t need to lift your arm, divine using the elements, etc. Bedridden divination.

Spells: Make your own spell kits. Spell jars and sachets are also an excellent way to already have the spell prepared, set it up so you can simply shake it to re/activate the spell.

Warding: Create physical ties for your wards that aren’t reliant on consistent upkeep (as a failsafe), and reinforce your other ward layers when you have the energy. I create far more layers than I need so when I am unable to reinforce them, they still protect me. 

Worship: Compile prayers and devotions somewhere you can easily find and read them, have a wall altar for easy maintenance, keep offerings simple (a glass of water, for example). Bedridden worship.

Nonbinary Cosmology and Why It’s Important

After many requests, I’ve made a rebloggable version of my ‘Weather Magic’ page. Here you will find heaps of resources to help you with weather/storm craft. If you’ve read some of my previous posts about weather magic you will notice some similarities - that is because this is a collection of every weather witching post that I’ve ever posted compiled into handy resources post.

Weather Magic

The term “weather magic” or “weather witching” has been used to mean anything from divination and forecasting of weather to actual control and manipulation of the weather itself. From calling up treacherous storms to destroy another’s crops or providing fair winds for those at sea, witches (and even those who do not consider themselves to be such) have always been involved with weather magic. When you consider that most forms of magic are based around an agricultural past, the ability to affect and predict the weather was considered an invaluable skill. After all, if your family’s livelihood depended on the success of your crops (or the ability to find water as it did in my family’s case), weather magic would be an extremely handy thing to know.

Why the url Storm Born Witch?

I am quite fortunate, as the gift for weather related magic comes easily to my family. For generations, the men in my family have been dowsers or water diviners. However, it wasn’t until after I displayed an aptitude to weather related magic that I was told about my family’s history with it. My grandfather was the last water diviner in the family and he died when I was very young so I was never taught how to divine for water. My grandmother was the one to teach me what little she knew about weather magic - the rest either occurred naturally or I picked up along the way.

Calling Up A Wind - Whistling Up A Wind

This is the most common form of weather magic and has been practiced for hundreds of years. Depending on the pitch and tone of the whistle a witch can create a gentle breeze or a sharp gust of wind. Traditionally, if the skill of whistling up a wind does not come naturally to you the option of making a ‘wind whistle’ out of willow or alder wood is available.

Here in Australia, whistling up a wind is probably the most common form of magic I do. I honestly do not go a day without whistling up a cool breeze. It’s bloody hot here and sometimes a cool breeze is just what you need.

Storm Casting

Storm casting is the art of creating storms. There are many different methods to creating storms and bringing rain. The method used by my family is to fill a jug with water and while sitting outside (or facing a window) pour the water into a basin or bowl. Dip the tip of your pointer finger into the water and slowly make five clockwise circles in the water (if you have a pendant necklace this can be used instead - just above the water in the bowl). As you are making the circles call the wind to bring in a storm by blowing (or whistling a continuous low note - the sound of wind over the mouth of a glass bottle) over the water in the basin.

Ways to Stop a Storm (Dispersing, Binding & Preventing)

There are multiple ways to stop a storm. The most common are dispersing or binding storms. However there are also ways to prevent storms from coming by directing them away from where you are. This is great if you’re holding an event outside and you need good weather.

Dispersing

This method involves spreading the storm out over a large area thereby minimising its effects. You can disperse a storm by calling winds to blow it away (or in a certain direction) or if you favour using weather maps you can draw the low pressure system moving away and gradually dissipating.

Binding (Storm Catching)

This method is also called ‘storm catching’ and involves catching a storm and binding it within an object (usually a bottle or knots) so it can be released gradually at a later date by pulling out the cork or undoing the braid/knots.

Storm catching or “reeling in a storm” is even more difficult than storm casting so it’s always wise to think before you cast. Too much energy put into a storm and it will go on for weeks (and cause some flooding - basement incident) or it will be extremely violent and knock down power lines and tree branches. Too little energy and all you will get is a 5 minute shower of rain.

Preventing a Storm (Weather Maps)

However, if you wish to prevent a storm from forming, you’re going to have to pull out the weather maps. To make a weather map all you need to do is to print out a map of your local area or the area you’re trying to keep a storm away from.

Just use google maps and don’t make the area too big or you might seriously strain yourself magically. Then laminate the map - now you have your own ‘whiteboard’ to draw weather symbols on to generate certain types of localised weather.

To practice this kind of magic you really do need to know how weather systems work and how they’re likely to move; knowing a little bit about meteorology goes a long way.

Once you’re ready, find out what the weather is predicted to be and draw it on your map. Now draw the high/low pressure systems moving so that the area you’re trying to protect doesn’t get rain. This method can also be used to bring rain to a certain area.

Sex magick is the use of sexual energy to enhance magical workings, manifest desires, and achieve spiritual enlightenment. This form of magick is based on the belief that sexual energy is one of the most powerful forces available to humans, and can be channeled for personal empowerment, healing, manifestation, and connection with the divine.

Understanding Sexual Energy

Sexual energy is a vital life force (sometimes referred to as kundalini energy) that can be used to manifest desires, heal, and connect with higher spiritual realms. When raised and directed consciously, this energy can be incredibly potent.

• Chakras and Sexual Energy: The sacral chakra (located in the pelvic region) is associated with creativity, sensuality, and sexuality. Activating and balancing this chakra can enhance your ability to use sexual energy for magick.

• Energy Raising: During sex, energy builds up through breathing, movement, and emotional intensity, which can be focused toward a specific intention or outcome.

Preparing for Sex Magick

Setting Intentions:

• Clarity- Before you begin, determine the specific goal or purpose for your magick. Whether it’s for love, healing, success, or spiritual enlightenment, having a clear and focused intention is essential.

• Manifestation- The energy raised during sex should be channeled toward manifesting this intention. Visualize your desired outcome in vivid detail during the act of sex.

Creating Sacred Space:

• Cleansing- Cleanse your space with incense, herbs, or a ritual bath to remove any unwanted energies. This is particularly important if the space is not already aligned with your intention.

• Altar- Set up an altar or sacred space with candles, crystals, and symbols related to your goal. This could include a wand, sigils, or a statue of a deity associated with your intention.

Choosing Partners:

• Consent and Trust- Sex magick is most effective when both parties are in alignment and trust each other. The emotional and energetic connection between partners can amplify the magick.

• Energy Alignment- Ideally, both partners should share the same intentions for the magical work and be open to using their sexual energy in a spiritual or intentional way. In relationships or casual settings, mutual respect for boundaries and intentions is critical.

Techniques for Practicing Sex Magick

The Orgasmic Focus Technique:

• The idea is to raise energy during the sexual act, culminating in an orgasmic release. This energy is then directed toward your intention.

• Focus on the goal you wish to manifest throughout the entire act.

• As you reach the peak of orgasm, visualize your goal coming to fruition.

• Some practitioners prefer to chant a mantra or affirmation related to the goal at the moment of climax.

• After climax, rest and allow the energy to settle, feeling a sense of completion.

Breathwork and Energy Raising:

• Breathing Techniques- Deep, controlled breathing (also called tantric breathing) is a powerful way to raise and direct energy.

• As you breathe in, visualize energy flowing up your spine.

• As you exhale, imagine releasing tension or focusing energy toward your goal.

• Partner breathing- Sync your breath with your partner to create a stronger flow of energy.

Tantric Sex Magick:

• Slow, deliberate movements- Tantric techniques focus on prolonging and intensifying the experience of sexual energy.

• Energy Circulation- Through techniques like the “Microcosmic Orbit”, the energy is circulated throughout the body instead of being released at orgasm. This builds energy that can be directed toward your goal.

• Sacred Union- In tantric practice, sex is viewed as a spiritual union, with the partners acting as conduits for divine energy. Focus on the divine and the interconnectedness of all things while making love.

Visualization and Affirmations:

• During sex, focus intently on your visualization of your goal.

• Imagine the desired outcome as if it’s already happening in vivid detail.

Boots and mittens on, witches - it’s time for the Snow Moon!

Snow Moon

The Snow Moon is the name given to the full moon which occurs during the month of February. Despite what certain groundhogs will tell you, February is the month that sees the highest rates of snowfall across much of North America, according to the National Weather Service, and many alternative names for the moon and the month in which it falls reflect this.

As with many full moon names, we find the roots of the Snow Moon among the indigenous peoples of North America. In this particular case, a colonist explorer noted in 1760 that the Naudowessie (Dakota) people called this month Snow Moon specifically due to the tendency for snowstorms to come during that month. Some other indigenous names for this moon and month refer to commonly-sighted animals. Some examples include Eagle Moon (Cree), Bear Moon (Ojibwe), Groundhog Moon (Algonquin), and Goose Moon (Haida). Another notable example is Hungry Moon (Cherokee), denoting the scarcity of available food in deep winter.

The moon will be at peak illumination at 8:53am EST on Wednesday, February 12th. It will be below the horizon at this time, meaning the moon may appear to be full on the 11th and the 12th, depending on where you live. It should be highest in the sky around midnight EST on the 12th - the perfect time for magic!

What Does It Mean For Witches?

February is a month of change and transition. Though winter still holds on, many places may be showing early signs of spring. Little buds may be coming out on the trees, certain species of birds are beginning to migrate back, and hibernating animals start to wake up and reappear.

As we begin to turn toward the end of our long winter’s rest, it’s a good time to think about how we prepare for oncoming change and how we care for ourselves and our practices during times of stagnation.

We might also contemplate the concept of distance and stasis as it relates to our practices, be it keeping long-distance bonds fresh, doing things remotely either alone or as part of a larger group, or feeling distant from your craft or your deities. And yes, such things are normal and cyclical. Our inspiration and motivation wax and wane just as the moon does. If it feels like you’ve been far away from your craft for too long, perhaps it’s time to bring it back into your orbit.

What Witchy Things Can We Do?

Gather fresh snow or icicles for moon water, or make your own moon ice by leaving a bowl of water out overnight to freeze, if the temperature drops low enough.

If it snows in your area, you can wish upon a snowball. Grab a handful of powdery snow, whisper your wish to it, and throw the whole thing up in the air to release the wish into the universe

With winter scarcity in mind, practice creating a minimalist spell as an exercise. Create a workable spell with as few components, words, movements, or ritual elements as possible. This is more of a challenge if you’re used to using material components or rituals in your spellwork. Many witches cast spells with focused thought or energy work alone.

You can also try creating a spell with only components and materials that you already have on hand. Explore your home and see how many items you can identify a magical purpose for and brainstorm different ways they could be used in your craft.

Explore the concept of self care as magic. Use your routines to create moments of rest and harmony, make a point of being kind to your body and your mind, and cultivate a more positive relationship with yourself - it’s the only one guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Connect with your local biome by looking for any early signs of spring in your area. Feed the returning birds and identify the plant and animal species you see around you as they appear one by one.

EL SEGUNDO, CA, February 7, 2025 – Tri-Union Seafoods has made the decision to voluntarily recall select lots of canned tuna products sold under the Genova®, Van Camp’s®, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s brand names. This voluntary recall is out of an abundance of caution following the notification from our supplier that the “easy open” pull tab can lid on limited products encountered a manufacturing defect that may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak, or worse, be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled. Consumers feeling unwell should seek immediate medical attention. No illnesses associated with the recalled products have been reported and the recall is being conducted to ensure consumer safety. some emphasis mine. this is not a comprehensive list of retailers. these cans were sold in more stores than what is listed, and there is no complete list of affected stores. long story short the pull tab has a defect that makes these cans the perfect environment to give you botulism. and botulism is REALLY REALLY FUCKING bad. it is one of the deadliest forms of food poisoning and commonly grows in dented or damaged cans. unfortunately, the recall announcement does not currently include images.

The disease begins with weakness, blurred vision, feeling tired, and trouble speaking. This may then be followed by weakness of the arms, chest muscles, and legs. Vomiting, swelling of the abdomen, and diarrhea may also occur. The disease does not usually affect consciousness or cause a fever.

...and these vague symptoms, which may not even all appear in someone with botulism, eventually lead to muscle weakness and paralysis to the point someone is unable to call for help, and might eventually stop being able to breathe. while fully conscious.

In foodborne botulism, symptoms generally begin 18 to 36 hours after eating contaminated food. However, symptoms can begin as soon as 6 hours after or up to 10 days later.

according to the wikipedia article, 5%-10% of people who get botulism will die with timely medical intervention. without medical intervention, botulism kills 50% of the people it infects. this is emergency room ASAP level stuff.
