God damn it. A certain God in particular.
Of course, the detective existed in another universe as a fucking Greek God. And of course, he also chose to follow Merrick around like a giant lost puppy. She had only shown a fraction of her power before, and it was risky, but... she only needed an opening.
He rarely left her side these days, annoyingly enough. But if it could get close enough and take what belonged to it, the power boost would be immense. And it couldn't resist that...
So as they are arriving home from an outing, Violet is waiting for them.
@violet-desire
Today has felt... off.
Enzo has had this nagging feeling that something is going to happen, something bad, but he can't quite place what it is. Merrick had taken him out with her to see if that'd help and it did dampen the feeling.
Until they get closer to home.
Before they even get close to the door, Enzo gently squeezes Merrick's hand, looking into her eyes with the most serious expression she's probably ever seen on his face since they'd met, and telling her to go and wait for him at Pete's house.
Once she's gone, Enzo silently steps into the house, ready for any sort of attack.
Merrick had never seen him look so serious before. It leaves no room for questions, only a quick nod as she pulls him down to kiss his cheek. It had been awhile since she's visited Pete, anyway.
And as Enzo enters the house, it's unnaturally dark. Even the natural light that would normally filter in doesn't touch the murky shadows that seem to shift and move along every wall and surface.
Standing in the kitchen is Violet, it's face visible as the hood is pulled back. The deep purple cloak it wears billows out around her, pitch black appendages several feet long squirming from underneath and along the floor.
"You really have nothing better to do, hmm?"
The moment the unwanted energy in the house is finally completely placeable, Enzo can feel pure rage bubble in his veins. It turns his eyes gold and snake-like, and he's considerably taller once he reaches the kitchen door.
As Violet says her snide remark, an arrow is shot at it, bound to hit something on her, vital or not. When it does firmly lodge somewhere, it burns, powerful and bright and damn near unbearable.
"I could say the same for you."
Violet groans in pain as the arrow lodges into its shoulder, black blood seeping and sizzling out of the wound. Reaching its hand up, it looks like she's going to pull the arrow out, but uses a telekinetic pull instead so it doesn't have to touch it. It's slow, but the wound is already attempting to repair itself.
"Oh, I'm exactly where I'm meant to be. This is my destiny, and hers."
In a blink, it's floating up in the air and rushing towards the God, disappearing at the last second in a cloud of putrid purple smoke. Maniacal laughter filling the space. Thick, barbed tendrils shoot out at him from behind, attempting to bind him in place.
The smoke makes him grimace, though it doesn't have the likely desired effect of a distraction from the tendrils that attempt to bind him. It's easy enough to break free from them, now holding a sword that seems to be welded out of pure light.
"You are made to fail. That is your destiny. To fight for the wrong causes and be defeated." The words are practically growled, harsh and stern and warning.
"Spare me your holier than thou rhetoric, deity." Violet's voice seems to echo around the space as it's her turn to grimace, the light of his sword near blinding as she hisses. The supernatural shadows around the house pulsate and grow, but can't seem to get quite close enough thanks to the glowing sword.
"Did you really think keeping her away from me would help?" It asks ominously, making no moves to attack just yet. Only content in keeping him there.
And as Merrick is sitting with Pete at his house, a sudden searing pain is shooting through her head, and she cries out. Dropping the cup of tea she had been holding.
God damn it. A certain God in particular.

Standing in the kitchen is Violet, it's face visible as the hood is pulled back. The deep purple cloak it wears billows out around her, pitch black appendages several feet long squirming from underneath and along the floor.
"You really have nothing better to do, hmm?"
It's a disorienting experience, suddenly being somewhere you don't recognize and having no idea how you got there. And as Merrick falls to her knees on the ground, she also can't remember where she was before. Or who she may have been with. It's a type of amnesia where... she knows who she is, remembers her life well enough. But trying to remember anyone else that may have been in it makes her dizzy.
Except for one. She remembers them vividly.
"Hello, child." Violet speaks above her and several feet away, and... it's hood is pushed back. Merrick has never seen its face before now, only eyes that resemble hers a little too closely. A gasp escapes her as she tries to crawl away from it, only causing Violet to chuckle. "Yes, I know... not quite what you were expecting, hmm?"
As Violet begins circling around her, Merrick is trying to look around and figure out where she is. It's all black, empty nothingness. Trying to speak, a strangled noise of fear can be heard from her throat before she manages. "Is this..."
"No, you are not in the Void." It answers, sounding bored. "You are... in between, I suppose. My domain. And I wish it to look like this for now, perhaps to remind you what's at stake."
"The Favor..."
"Yes." It answers softly, pausing in its movements. Nothing is visible besides its face and the deep purple cloak billowing out around it. "A misleading name for it, as it implies you have a choice in the matter."
Merrick tries to get to her feet, but it's as if an enormous weight is pushing on her shoulders as she's forced back down. "Just... what is it that you want from me? Please, just leave them out of it..."
Tilting its head to the side, a grin much too wide to be natural slowly spreads across it's face as it crouches down a few feet away. "Who do you speak of?"
It's... damn it, it's right there at the edge of her thoughts. How could she forget about them, their face, their name. The harder Merrick thinks about them, the more it almost hurts, groaning as her vision swims before her. "What... what have you done...?"
"Spared your mind from imploding, honestly. I wouldn't think too hard about it... could still happen." A beat of silence as Merrick resigns herself to staring at her lap. "There are a multitude of universes where you exist, child. Many where you go to that fateful party, most of which ends with you being trapped in that Manor for a very long time. And some where you accept my deal. The best thing about that is... well, it gives me an abundance of choices."
Rising to its feet, Violet closes the distance and harshly grabs Merrick's jaw, forcing her to look up at it. Claws barely poking into her skin as she groans in pain. "Lucky for me because fucking hell, all manner of beings were quick to flock to you. Trying to interfere with my plans. Spirits that feel no pain, a fucking God that follows you around like a giant puppy. An angel that fell from grace. The witch king Minotaur was an... oversight on my part. I didn't expect it to actually grow to care about you. And Wilford! Really! The man that shot you, killed you. The reason you ended up in the Void in the first place!"
"But..." Violet continues, letting out a slow breath as Merrick stares at it with wide eyes. "I'm anything if patient. I had to take these risks because if I stayed too close to any of you, then you wouldn't get stronger. And so... I'm left with a handful of choices."
Merrick's head is swimming with the information, several memories converging and trying to make themselves known. She attempts to struggle, to get away, but it's no use. Finally, frustration and anger burst forth. "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!"
The words ring in the emptiness for a few seconds, then dark, deep laughter as Violet's eyes flash red.
"You, dear Merrick. Or should I say, my new vessel."

Hmmm...
Who will be the lucky victim, I wonder?
It's almost time...
I can feel it.
In every timeline of the expansive multiverse, there is no her without me. Isn't that interesting?
As much as things can be different, at some point, they will converge as the inevitable comes ever closer. It is her purpose.
Just as it is mine.
The area around Merrick's estate is calm and peaceful. It's a beautiful sunny day. Tesoro, the small black cat, is exploring in the garden. Sniffing at the strawberry bushes before moving on to the bell peppers.
However, that peace is soon broken as what appears to be an electric purple rip in space appears nearby. It rapidly splits open... and Merrick comes tumbling through it before it slams shut and disappears. She remains on the ground, on her side, not fully unconscious as she lets out a groan. Dark blood pours from her lip, and her clothing is disheveled and ripped in places.
Someone had decided to pay her a visit.
@merrick-of-violet
Enzo had been in the garden with Tesoro, watching the kitten explore with a soft smile. However, the moment he notices the rip in space. Gently moving Tesoro away from it, he moves closer, shocked to see Merrick fall out of it.
Quickly moving to her side, he carefully rolls her over, carrying her into the house with the utmost care before setting her on the sofa. Carefully cleaning the blood off her lip with a tissue, he attempts to wake her up, softly whispering to her. "Merrick... Merrick, darling, are you alright?"
Merrick is hardly aware of being moved, in and out of consciousness, her brain thinks she's floating somehow. Before the weightlessness can become too frightening, she hears Enzo speaking to her. Groaning, her eyes flutter open, but everything is blurry. However, she knows it's him, his aura familiar to her by now.
"Enzo..." She mutters, her voice sounding rough. Lifting a hand to touch his arm, she tries to look around and get her bearings. "I... how did you find me? Wait... did I make it home?"
"Yes, my love, you're home now... What happened?" he asks softly, gently taking her hand as he looks into her unfocused eyes, clearly concerned. "Who did this?"
He hates seeing her like this; it causes some less than pleasant feelings to swirl in his chest — worry, anger, and some others that he can't place.
Merrick lets out a shaky breath as she tries to comprehend the pain her body is in. Mostly, it's down her back, an already tender area on a normal day. And her ears are ringing thanks to the powers the entity tried to use on her.
Squeezing his hand, Merrick looks up at him with worry. "It's... a long story, and..." She pauses, trying to think of what to say. She didn't want to involve him, but she came home anyway, knowing he was here. "I am indebted to an entity... s demon. They... they freed me from a kind of limbo, but I had to make a deal with them. And now... they want their payment."
Listening carefully to Merrick, his eyes resemble a shattered mirror for an imperceptible moment when she mentions a deal with a demon.
He can only imagine that she didn't want to involve him in this issue but he'd be insane not to want to help. "Merrick.. you should've told me... I could've protected you from them." his voice lowers to a soothing whisper.
Merrick tenses as she focuses on his eyes, as they remind her all too well of her former prison. As her eyes open a little more, the left one is completely bloodshot, making the amethyst stand out even more than usual.
"I... I didn't want to think about it..." She whispers, her bottom lip quivering before she quickly bites it. She felt so weak and helpless in the moment, and every fiber of her being hated it. "I though they would give me more time..."
Bringing a hand up to her face, Enzo gently runs his thumb along her bottom lip. "Shh.. I know, dear... They can't hurt you anymore.. Not if I can help it, alright?" He kisses her cheek softly. "I will do everything in my power to protect you; that demon will never so much as glance at you as long as I'm here." It's a promise and a fact, whether Merrick knows it or not — he is not just going to stand by and watch the light of his life be hunted by some low life entity that relies on deals for power.
Even though Enzo is a God, Merrick still worries for him. Violet is the strongest thing she's ever encountered, always threatening to take anyone she cared about. Groaning softly, she tries to sit up enough to wrap her arms around him in a hug with all the strength she can muster in the moment.
"I love you... I don't want them to hurt you, αγαπητός..."
"I know, darling, I love you too... They can't hurt me, αγαπητή θεά." he says with a soft smile, leaning closer to her, ever so careful as not to cause her any pain.
"But I hate to see them hurt you in this way... Please, let me deal with them; I promise to keep myself as safe as possible but what am I if I don't protect you, my love?"
Looking up at him, Merrick reaches up and cups his cheek, purple eyes looking between his. She has been strong on her own for so long that having him to help carry the burden is overwhelming. Her guardian, her love... her light.
"They... they threatened to send me back. I can't go back there, I can't... I'd rather die."
Enzo kisses her wrist softly in an attempt to comfort her. "You won't go back there, I promise... Nor will she hurt you, nor do you have to go through this alone ever again, understand, my love?"
Merrick's eyes flutter closed at the kiss, nodding her head slightly. Determined to believe him and not sink deeper into the hold that Violet has on her mind.
"Yes... I understand, amore." She answers quietly. Soft meowing reaches her ears, Tesoro pawing at the side of the couch. Carefully, she reaches down to scoop him up and sets him on her chest. "Their name is Violet... at least, that's what they told me. I don't know where they went or if they could have followed me here."
He nods along as she gives him more information. Violet... he recognises that name from somewhere; perhaps it was mentioned before.
"Thank you for telling me, my dear... Hopefully they haven't followed you." He'd hate for Merrick to see him angry if Violet had managed to follow her.
"You deserve to know... and I'm sorry for keeping it from you." Merrick says in the same quiet tone, feeling utterly exhausted. She had put up a fight, as futile as it was; her powers were no match for them.
Holding Tesoro close as he curls up on her, she keeps her eyes closed and shifts slightly with a wince to get more comfortable. "I'm going to rest for a while, αγάπη μου..."
~~~~~
Violet had followed her, appearing on the far outskirts of her property, a scowl the only thing able to be seen on the lower half of their face. They felt the power inside that house, and it wasn't the stubborn woman inside.
"It's alright, my love... Just rest, I 'll be here when you wake. I love you." He presses a kiss to her forehead, and an even gentler one to Tesoro's head.
He can sense an unknown presence, some power, weaker than him bit still relatively strong. He has not s doubt in his mind that it's the entity Merrick mentioned, but he's not leaving Merrick's side while they're in the vicinity.
"Over seven million stupid humans on this pathetic rock, and you just had to choose to be infatuated with what is mine..."
The sinister feminine voice seems to come from all around Ezno, yet Merrick remains fast asleep. Shadows in the corners grow a little more.
"Get your own plaything."
"Nearly eight billion, actually." He corrects them. "She isn't yours; not your possession, not your plaything."
He's more than aware of the growing shadows in the corner of the room, glowing even brighter than usual to overpower them.
"Not. Yours." He almost growls it, a clear air of threat in his voice.
"She owes me a Favor. I freed her from her prison, and she agreed to pay me back. I will not have you interfere!"
And yet, Violet makes no move to enter the same space as he is. A fucking God... of all the beings that could latch on to Merrick, it's a fucking God. She's running out of options, but there are a few tricks up it's sleeves.
"Isn't she though?" Violet coos around him, and right after, Merrick groans in pain yet still dead asleep. Deep purple veins slowly run up her neck, looking almost black as she arches her back.
Seeing the veins appear along Merrick's neck, Enzo gently place a hand over them, soothing any and all pain they could cause and making the veins disappear.
"You are a coward, Violet. You lie and manipulate then hide in the shadows as if it will save you." He states, his tone even but clearly enraged. "It will not save you any longer."
Merrick lets out a sigh of relief as the veins fade away, murmuring Enzo's name in her sleep before relaxing once again. Something like a growl reverberates through the house, making what isn't nailed down shake. Tesoro looks around and hisses, ears flat on his head.
"This. Isn't. Over. If I do not get what is owed to me, she goes back to whence she came."
As suddenly as it began, everything goes quiet and still once again. They left.
Hmm.
He hates seeing her like this; it causes some less than pleasant feelings to swirl in his chest — worry, anger, and some others that he can't place.
Merrick lets out a shaky breath as she tries to comprehend the pain her body is in. Mostly, it's down her back, an already tender area on a normal day. And her ears are ringing thanks to the powers the entity tried to use on her.
Squeezing his hand, Merrick looks up at him with worry. "It's... a long story, and..." She pauses, trying to think of what to say. She didn't want to involve him, but she came home anyway, knowing he was here. "I am indebted to an entity... s demon. They... they freed me from a kind of limbo, but I had to make a deal with them. And now... they want their payment."
Listening carefully to Merrick, his eyes resemble a shattered mirror for an imperceptible moment when she mentions a deal with a demon.
He can only imagine that she didn't want to involve him in this issue but he'd be insane not to want to help. "Merrick.. you should've told me... I could've protected you from them." his voice lowers to a soothing whisper.
Merrick tenses as she focuses on his eyes, as they remind her all too well of her former prison. As her eyes open a little more, the left one is completely bloodshot, making the amethyst stand out even more than usual.
"I... I didn't want to think about it..." She whispers, her bottom lip quivering before she quickly bites it. She felt so weak and helpless in the moment, and every fiber of her being hated it. "I though they would give me more time..."
Bringing a hand up to her face, Enzo gently runs his thumb along her bottom lip. "Shh.. I know, dear... They can't hurt you anymore.. Not if I can help it, alright?" He kisses her cheek softly. "I will do everything in my power to protect you; that demon will never so much as glance at you as long as I'm here." It's a promise and a fact, whether Merrick knows it or not — he is not just going to stand by and watch the light of his life be hunted by some low life entity that relies on deals for power.
Even though Enzo is a God, Merrick still worries for him. Violet is the strongest thing she's ever encountered, always threatening to take anyone she cared about. Groaning softly, she tries to sit up enough to wrap her arms around him in a hug with all the strength she can muster in the moment.
"I love you... I don't want them to hurt you, αγαπητός..."
"I know, darling, I love you too... They can't hurt me, αγαπητή θεά." he says with a soft smile, leaning closer to her, ever so careful as not to cause her any pain.
"But I hate to see them hurt you in this way... Please, let me deal with them; I promise to keep myself as safe as possible but what am I if I don't protect you, my love?"
Looking up at him, Merrick reaches up and cups his cheek, purple eyes looking between his. She has been strong on her own for so long that having him to help carry the burden is overwhelming. Her guardian, her love... her light.
"They... they threatened to send me back. I can't go back there, I can't... I'd rather die."
Enzo kisses her wrist softly in an attempt to comfort her. "You won't go back there, I promise... Nor will she hurt you, nor do you have to go through this alone ever again, understand, my love?"
Merrick's eyes flutter closed at the kiss, nodding her head slightly. Determined to believe him and not sink deeper into the hold that Violet has on her mind.
"Yes... I understand, amore." She answers quietly. Soft meowing reaches her ears, Tesoro pawing at the side of the couch. Carefully, she reaches down to scoop him up and sets him on her chest. "Their name is Violet... at least, that's what they told me. I don't know where they went or if they could have followed me here."
He nods along as she gives him more information. Violet... he recognises that name from somewhere; perhaps it was mentioned before.
"Thank you for telling me, my dear... Hopefully they haven't followed you." He'd hate for Merrick to see him angry if Violet had managed to follow her.
"You deserve to know... and I'm sorry for keeping it from you." Merrick says in the same quiet tone, feeling utterly exhausted. She had put up a fight, as futile as it was; her powers were no match for them.
Holding Tesoro close as he curls up on her, she keeps her eyes closed and shifts slightly with a wince to get more comfortable. "I'm going to rest for a while, αγάπη μου..."
~~~~~
Violet had followed her, appearing on the far outskirts of her property, a scowl the only thing able to be seen on the lower half of their face. They felt the power inside that house, and it wasn't the stubborn woman inside.
"It's alright, my love... Just rest, I 'll be here when you wake. I love you." He presses a kiss to her forehead, and an even gentler one to Tesoro's head.
He can sense an unknown presence, some power, weaker than him bit still relatively strong. He has not s doubt in his mind that it's the entity Merrick mentioned, but he's not leaving Merrick's side while they're in the vicinity.
"Over seven million stupid humans on this pathetic rock, and you just had to choose to be infatuated with what is mine..."
The sinister feminine voice seems to come from all around Ezno, yet Merrick remains fast asleep. Shadows in the corners grow a little more.
"Get your own plaything."
You know, I tried to be civil and even warn you about interfering in my business. It's a shame, really. I was quite the fan of your work! Now...
Well, now you've become a problem. If Merrick really loved you, she would have kept her distance to protect you. Selfish of her, is it not? To involve you in this?
Is she worth it? From what I hear, you're quite the master manipulator, so I wonder if you actually love her like you claim. One thing is for certain: you'll be seeing me very soon. Both of you.
Daniel's eyes widen momentarily as he recognizes the voice, before narrowing into a glare filled with distaste and hatred.
"Violet. It's always a displeasure to hear from you," he responds calmly, despite the cold tone in his voice. "Merrick isn't 'selfish' for seeking help from the only one that's showed her any true devotion in the past century, especially when that man is as devoted to her as I am. I don't know what you've heard about me, but I will always put my beloved creature's needs before anything else in this crooked world, and that includes myself."
He straightens out his posture, adjusting the lapel of his purple suit jacket and letting out a bored hum.
"Keep your empty threats to yourself, Violet, you have no power over either of us. If you're going to pretend you have any sort of control over this situation, come deal with it in person." They adjust his sunglasses and roll out his shoulders, sounding completely unbothered despite the fact that he was terrified for Merrick's safety.
"Have the day you deserve."
Oh yes, I'd love to ask the great Wilford Warfstache about his partner!
Let's see... how long do you think it will take for you to forget about Merrick when she never comes back? I'm betting... a week. And I'm being rather generous, too!
I mean, you already don't remember who she really is, but I suppose with a body count as high as yours, who could keep track? I suppose I can relate, dear.
Best to enjoy your time together while you can.
"I... excuse me?"
He unfortunately doesn't have the liberty of knowing who he's talking to. And right now, he hates that fact. He doesn't like how whoever this is speaks of his Merrick. And how they threaten her like this. It's disgusting.
"You should consider yourself lucky that your face is hidden, otherwise I can't imagine how ugly you'd look with a bullet right through your eye... Yes, I may be forgetful, and I may have a past I'm not proud of, but Merrick loves me. And I love her. And as long as I have her, then I'll try my hardest to not forget her."
Wilford takes a deep breath... they didn't deserve to see him angry. "I'll gladly spend time with her. After all, we have a long, long time left together."
Oh dear, sweet, delusional Murdock...
Do you really think things are going to work out well for you and your precious Merrick? Her fate is already sealed. Every day, she takes a step closer to fulfilling her real purpose. I guess the real question is:
How do you plan on coping when you're alone again?
That fucking bitch. It’s always Violet or his dad coming after them, and at least Murdock could beat his bastard of a father and throw him out again. There wasn’t much he could do with a homicidal spirit insisting on Merricks purpose. No matter how right or wrong she is. “I won’t be alone again, so just fuck off!”
A moment of quiet, where he thinks that she’s finally left. “I don’t know. It was easier to be alone before I met her, because there wasn’t anyone to miss. If I lose her now..I don’t know what I’ll do. Lose my mind probably, turn myself in. I don’t want to kill anymore, I’ve had too much happiness to keep hurting people. I’d go to prison. Go on death row probably.”

"Right, of course. I'll leave you to your delusions..."
There's a swish of the long purple cloak it wears as they walk toward the door, before stopping and turning around to face Oliver again.
"But before I do... please indulge me with just one more question. Does the name Maria De Luca ring any bells?"
@violet-desire
What?
Oliver remembered the name the same way you remembered something on a radio segment you heard only once, distant yet familiar. He’s better with faces, and portions of a woman he once knew fumble to create a full image. Damien had mentioned her a few times, and they had crossed paths more than once whenever he would wait for the Mayor’s arrival. He remembers dark hair, a fierce fire quelled by an elegant professionalism, intelligent eyes…
How had he not seen it before?
It doesn’t receive a response from him, but the way he turns away from them is enough of an answer. What was the real reason for her still being here? Why the new identity? Who was this entity that spoke as if it had a grip over her?
“… I believe you’ve said enough. Leave, now.”
So touchy! I merely ask the hard questions, but I see you humans can't handle the hard truths. Not surprising.
