Enjoying a cheeky wee day off work. ▪︎ Hasn't all been lazing around though. After doing the school run this morning I had a little decorating to do & some household chores to catch up on. ▪︎ All done & dusted. Sunday evening sounds from @boardsofcanada's fourth studio album 𝙏𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬'𝙨 𝙃𝙖𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩. ▪︎ First time listening to this and it's definitely darker in tone from previous BOC albums and there's certainly a touch of foreboding to it. ▪︎ The album title was apparently inspired by 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘭𝘺 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵, a 1977 Canadian film about climate change. Wednesday afternoon sounds delivered by @suedehq's phenomenal new album 𝘼𝙪𝙩𝙤𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. ▪︎ 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘴 𝘔𝘦 𝘖𝘯 was the hook that pulled me into this latest release. I realise Brett Anderson wrote this as tribute to his late mother, but this song just spoke to me on a really, really personal level and I just connected with it. ▪︎ I thought to myself if this raw, punchy and sweeping sound that Suede have tapped into is anything to go by, then this album is going to be an absolute stunner. I literally threw my money at the website when I preordered. ▪︎ Every song on here has depth and substance. Letting Monday afternoon unravel to the multi dimensional sound of Boards of Canada's beautiful 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘨𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪. ▪︎ Mark Eoin & Mike Sandison's second album ventures into more organic terrain. Sandison has said much of the album features acoustic instrumentation, but it's not immediately apparent because of how processed it is. ▪︎ 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘨𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪 travels into a darker territory, with both Sandison & Eoin stating that the September 11 attacks on New York's World Trade Centre drastically influenced them. ▪︎ The title of the album is said to be a combination of different words that has a genuine significance. It has also been noted there are esoteric references & subliminal messages peppered throughout with allusions made to Satanism, numerology as well as cult leader David Koresh. ▪︎ Warp Records president gave the duo the idea of making the album 66 minutes and 6 seconds long to play with listeners. ▪︎ The standout track for me though has to be side b track Julie and Candy. Soaking up the bittersweet buoyancy of Turin Brakes ninth studio album: 𝘞𝘪𝘥𝘦-𝘌𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘕𝘰𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 this Saturday night. ▪︎ Recorded throughout the covid pandemic the album encapsulates the fear & uncertainty of the times we all lived through. Saturday night with a parade of pops from 1979. ▪︎ Released in 1979, the album consists of re-recordings of tracks from the likes of M, David Bowie, The Police, Earth Wind & Fire and The Emotions, Donna Summer & Kygo, Blondie etc. ▪︎ This particular copy was resurrected from my parent's loft. Despite years of neglect, the vinyl spins quite nicely after a thorough cleaning. ▪︎ 1979 was a pretty schizophrenic year for music. There was everything from ska revivalists, rock fossils, classic rock acts, post-punk pioneers and original punk acts converging while disco hit its peak. In amongst all of this a glimpse of the future was also offered with the first successful rap and synth pop records being released. ▪︎ In a way this record is like a time capsule of that era. So back at the very end of 2021 I picked up a reissue of @boardsofcanada's first EP: 𝘛𝘸𝘰𝘪𝘴𝘮. ▪︎ I had made it a resolution to build my BOC collection in the new year, so to that end I picked up reissues of their fourth & fifth EPs: 𝘗𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘚𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘟 21/07/1998 and 𝘐𝘯 𝘢 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘖𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺 (which I'll post up separately). ▪︎ The 𝘗𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘚𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘟 21/07/1998 features the tracks that were played during the Peel Session broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on the 21st of July 1998. ▪︎ Aquarius (Version 3) & Happy Cycling on side 1 are my fave cuts here.
