I’m not even sure what to call this but this is basically live voice-acting of some of the lines from YOI, in this case -  some memorable Victuuri quotes.

Most of it is Yuuri’s monologue from episode 4, but there’s also a parts of the beach scene and the freaking airport scene.

If you’re gonna watch just one part of this vid then watch from 0:50 to 1:05 because that’s the part of the airport scene from ep 9 in which Victor says “I hope you never retire” and Yuuri says in tears “Let’s win the gold medal at the GPF”. The fact that they were doing this live and with no retakes during the event and it was still so perfect is just so amazing.

Also you gotta hear Toyonaga do that crying voice as Yuuri. You just have to.

(I won’t be translating this vid because it’s essentially just quotes from the anime, and I think not seeing the subtitles helps to focus on the emotions and the sheer skill of the actors, but let me just say that most of this is the part where Yuuri says that skaters’ competitive careers are short and he’s not sure how long his body will hold and how long Victor will stay with him but he’s praying to have as much of Victor’s time as he can. Just fyi.)

To commemorate the ICE Adolescence movie announcement, MAPPA is releasing a YOI illustration book!

This 250-page collection will include original animation sketches and character designs.

But, when it comes to the less positive responses, I think the words of a brilliant anon apply:

“I think the reason behind some of the lukewarm responses to the movie is because at some point between the first announcement and now, fandom turned speculations into expectations.”

And honestly when I read that I was like “that it’s, that’s it, that’s literally the entire issue condensed into one sentence”.

Because I think that’s true to some extent - for example “I’d like to see Victor and Yuuri get married in the movie” turned into “Victor and Yuuri MUST get married in the movie,” so the idea of a prequel freaks people out because it likely means less Victuuri moments for obvious reasons. And I think that more than anything, people’s mistake was to expect that the movie would be a sequel. I’ve been expecting some Victor backstory since the anime ended, so it wasn’t a huge shock for me, but for people who were dead-set on a direct sequel, that might have been a blow to their hype.

I do actually recommend having low expectations or having none at all - it’s not like you lose anything by not expecting anything, you can still be hyped about just getting more yoi content - which is a great reason on its own to be hyped and what keeps me going every day.

Otherwise, you’ll just end up disappointed if something doesn’t go your way - and let’s face it, not everything will go your way when it comes to someone else’s creation. And then you won’t be able to appreciate the good things because you’ll be stuck worrying/being frustrated about the things that didn’t go exactly like you wanted them to. Why go through that pain when you could just… not expect anything and then adore whatever you receive?

Okay so I know some of you are freaking out about the possible lack of Yuuri in the movie, but here’s why I think the movie will be amazing: (Roadshow means that we‘ll get a movie they just call it like that for some reason)

I don’t see why Yuuri shouldn’t be in it. We got one poster that shows Viktor and that‘s probably because they wanted to prepare us that we would actually get some of Viktor‘s backstory now

It‘s called ICE adolescence, not YURI adolescence, but also not VIKTOR adolescence either. Which means: maybe it’s not about just one of them but about both? And Yurio will probably be there too since Viktor knows him since he was a child

Kubo and Yamamoto clearly care about the fans of YOI and they want to see us happy. Again and again we were told how little time they had and how much they had to cut away on the content they actually wanted to give us. So why have we seen practically nothing of Viktor’s backstory in an anime with 12 episodes? Because they didn’t want to rush it. Because something important happened maybe, or because the change in character from a bubbly teenager to a depressed adult was too important and too significant to the story that it couldn‘t be done halfhearted. Of course, the backstory would have kinda spoilered the later episodes where we find out that Viktor isn’t the suave playboy he pretends to be

a prequel is so, so much better than putting an entirely new skating season into a movie because all those cute domestic things we dream of seeing simply wouldn’t have room in a two-hour movie (if the move will even be two hours) which means if, or more like when, we get the second season that means we have more backstory from the characters and we can start of immediately knowing at least a little about St. Petersburg and the rink

Studios want to earn money, and as harsh as it sounds as long as YOI is successful you can be sure they’ll pump out seasons and films until we‘re all 80

I know many are worried that Viktor’s backstory will be too sad but the thing is: no one would want to see such a depressing movie and the producers know that. The original anime also dealt with anxiety and other things that weren’t really happy? So I think there will be a balance between happy and sad moments just like in the anime

if new characters get introduced they can put them in the second season meaning we get more characters to care about and more complex plot lines (especially when it‘s about family)

please don’t forget that this is one poster and literally a handful words on a black background so please don’t think that this is all the information we‘ll get. I’m very sure Yuuri and Yurio will pop up along the way, simply because Yuuri‘s and Yurio‘s lifes were entangled with Viktor‘s at a very young age

I see a lot of fanfics and speculation about how Yuuri can’t possibly be 23yo and not have dated, kissed, or slept with anyone… But I honestly think he hasn’t experienced these things.

1) Yuuri’s ethnic culture. Japanese people aren’t very open and free with their feelings to start with, and intimacy is very closeted - even going to an American university would not have seen Yuuri hooking up with anyone.

2) Yuuri’s anxiety. Let me tell you that as an adolescent and now adult with diagnosed anxiety, it is hard enough to get through your everyday functioning, let alone throwing in parties and dating and sexual tension. Yes, Yuuri loosens up hella lots with alcohol, but from his internal monologue and flashback this seems to have been in a family/home context. And I think that alone would have been enough to make Yuuri wary about drinking alcohol with company (until the first GFP, anyway…)

3) Yuuri has been obsessed with Victor since he was 12. Come on, THE POSTERS ALONE… I doubt Yuuri would let himself admit to experiencing attraction to others, let alone act on or be carried away by it. Besides that, Yuuri seems quite guarded about who is in his life, and I don’t think he’d let in strangers or even make time for them in the form of even first dates or university parties. Family, close friends, Celestino, Phichit described as his only international friend… I think Victor had the best shot of getting close to Yuuri (and boy, did he succeed!).

4) His focus. Yuuri dedicated his life to becoming good enough to skate on the same ice as Victor, and moved around the world to pursue this dream. He studies at university while training as an internationally competitive figure skater… I went to university, and yes my degree was hard, but I could not have managed what Yuuri must have had to. We’ve seen how serious and focused Yuuri is… Would he squeeze in time for alcohol and socialising and parties and loosening up around his training? I think not. And I can’t see Yuuri compromising his skating dream in any way, can you?

THIS POST IS FOR PEOPLE WHO STILL CLAIM ‘YURI ON ICE’ IS QUEERBAITING OR DIDN’T FACE CENSORSHIP WHEN IN FACT THEY DID!!!

- This is a psa for people still claiming yoi is “bait” a) Kubo never denied the rings being for marriage but rather said “not just for” だけじゃなく which means for marriage but also other things b) Sayo Yamamoto has adressed censorship problems in the fanbook an in an event.

- Manabu Otsuka, ceo of Mappa (studio that animated yoi) has already stated that Sayo had problems getting greenlight for yoi with other studios bcs she wanted a romance 恋愛 between coach an athlete, he also has claimed in other interviews how she persisted despite backlash.

- Kubo has stated in the fanbook go yuri go that even if at the beggining she thought ppl would like to have their interpretation, she learned that there always has to be one right answer, hence there is not “up for interpretation” here.
