That being said, this Pride Month, pay homage to Spirk, please. Whether you ship it or don’t, it’s at least somewhat partially the reason all of these others exist. Your old man yaoi? It at least partially exists because some housewives had Star Trek playing on their TVs and had the thought to be like: “This is such a nice show! …but they seem almost…together?” I wouldn’t say Spirk is the oldest gay ship in “modern” media, far from it. However, it got to big enough popularity to where people discussed it in the newspaper. Teenagers and kids wrote fanfiction of it in their diaries that they thought no one would notice or see. Everyone saw the unique relationship Kirk had with Spock, and some saw a spark there.

Even Spock’s original actor, Leonard Nimoy, supported the LGBTQ+ community. He supported all of his costars regardless of sexuality. When the Star Trek reboot movies came out (regardless of your opinions of them), Zachary Quinto took over the role of Spock. He actually met Leonard Nimoy, and when Quinto came out as gay in 2011, Nimoy supported him completely. They developed a very close bond over not just the character of Spock, but over everything else a good friendship in the often cruel industry known as acting needs to survive. It’s beautiful what Star Trek and the actors associated with it, especially the original, have done for the world.

Spirk walked so all of these MLM ships now could run. So pay tribute to James Tiberius Kirk and S’Chn T’Gai Spock, please. They may not be your favorites, you may not ship them, you might not even know what the Star Trek fandom is. Just know that in 1966, kids obsessed with sci-fi might’ve been writing fanfiction in their diaries about their favorite gay ship the same way kids did the same in 2026. Sixty years, sixty whole years, all thanks to them.

I was rewatching scenes from The Book of Boba Fett finale and, aside from it reiterating that the BobaDin teamup is absolute cinema, it does very much look like Din had his hand on Boba's belt. Either that or their synchronization is crazy good (also possible)
