1,000 essential movies #143: Aguirre, the Wrath of God. Gorgeous, as wild as the jungle it depicts. Slow going initially, but the last third is absolutely compelling. Kinski is mesmerizing and Herzog’s detached, subtly cynical sensibility can’t be matched.

1,000 essential movies #142: Some Like it Hot. Aside from a dull mobster subplot, a perfect movie. The three leads are hilarious; Lemmon’s energy is infectious and Monroe is just ridiculously sexy. Curtis made me burst into laughter with his extended Cary Grant impression.

1,000 essential movies #141: Sweet Smell of Success. Nonstop insults and zingers, juicy performances from Lancaster and Curtis, fantastic score, fantastic everything. Maybe the sleaziest A+ movie ever made.

1,000 essential movies #140: American Graffiti. Great cars, constant stream of great music, and a fantastic performance by Charles Martin Smith. Not terribly likable, and unlike the director’s probable intent, not as nostalgia-inducing as you want it to be. The 50s actually looks miserable. (Then again maybe not for a certain demographic of which George Lucas is a member?)

1,000 essential movies #139: Richard III. I can’t believe I watched this on Election Day 😆 anyway Olivier is deliciously detestable as the conniving, unethical, unliked, selfish monarch whose comeuppance is probably one of the greatest in the history of the stage.

1,000 essential movies #138: The Postman Always Rings Twice. Absolutely classic film noir. John Garfield and Lana Turner have steamy chemistry in this familiar trope of “let’s kill your husband so we can be together.” Both leads are great, but this is Lana’s show all the way. Sometimes she’s vulnerable, other times scheming, sometimes resigned, sometimes bitter with hate. The plot rolls at a breakneck pace, and it’s hard to tell where it’s going (in a good way).

1,000 essential movies #137: Groundhog Day. I’m not a big Bill Murray fan, but he was perfect in this. Very watchable comedy.

1,000 essential movies #136: The Warriors. You want atmosphere? Incredible costumes? Stirring, moody, cool AF music? You want NYC of the late 1970s in all its dirty, unsafe, creepy glory? You got in it spades, my friend. Enjoy this piece of perfection.
