I don’t think he’s really trying to justify what’s going on here. In this moment of pain and confusion he is trying to rationalize it and relieve himself of the burden of responsibility (which of course his nature will ultimately not let him do), but he doesn’t really believe it. He’s just hurting.

2. His realization that the suffering that is about to result from Eren’s actions is partly for his sake, and the weight of that responsibility (as he sees it) pressing on him later in the chapter.

“There was nothing we could do about it… right?“ I don’t know if he can answer that question right now, but I think he knows he can’t let his regrets about the past control him. He has an opportunity to make a choice right now, and he needs to make the choice he’ll least regret. His face here is telling me that choice might mean rallying everyone to try to take down Eren. I mean, someone’s got to. I just so hope Jean is the one to do it!

Hello Anon, and sorry to keep you waiting for so long! I wrote like half of this response a while ago but then took a little break, got caught up in new chapter excitement and went on a trip so couldn’t finish it till now…Anyway enough excuses.

Yes, there is absolutely great significance in using the poem The Tyger for the Burning Bright visual novel! Considering how the story told in poetic prose throughout the VN seems heavily built around some of the themes of the poem itself, and the key points regarding Levi’s thoughts of Eren relates to the eponymous tiger, it was pretty much the perfect poem to use for them! 

(Side note: I also feel like a lot of the emotions and themes examined here seem very relevant to the current Eren’s mindset…)

First, let’s take examine the poem itself, or more specifically the first 2 stanzas since that’s the emphasized part within the VN, and is also the most important when it comes to grasping to Levi’s perception of Eren:

Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eye, Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies. Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand, dare seize the fire?
