“youre old enough to make appointments yourself now”

The first day we met, Celeste showed me a bunch of super pretty small plates, tea cups, and other cute china, including this pair of salt and pepper shakers, that all had delicately hand-painted flowers on them by her mother. There were many small plates and many tea cups, but the salt and pepper shakers were my favorite because of the purple flowers and how TINY they were! (I <3 tiny art)

In the moment, she wanted to give them to me, but Jam and I were still kinda new to being together, and I didn’t feel comfortable taking someone else’s family’s art...you know? Time went on and holidays went by- basically the whole year went by. Each of her gifts to me had been gift bags literally heavy and filled to the top with goodies, snacks, AND the usual gift card to buy MORE goodies and snacks ;) ...and a couple times I got a portable charger. But recently for my birthday—with all of those things included of course—she nicely wrapped up the salt and pepper shakers for me. I loved seeing them in the gift box.

I was kind of excited to thank her, because that’s just...really sweet of her to remember something from the first time we met. Maybe I’m just too much of a sentimental person or something, but I was touched. Still touched.

My birthday was in June, but I got this gift a few days ago. We didn’t see each other often or conveniently so that’s why it was so late. Two days (yesterday) after I got it, she passed.

I never got to thank her. I know I could’ve shot her a quick message, but I really wanted to thank her in person. She didn’t even know if I got the gift... I thanked her for every gift she’d given me, but this one is the most special because it’s the most personal one. And of course it had to be the last gift she gave me. I’ll miss her very much.

tbh the real advice I’d give to anyone is, do shit alone. go to a museum & go at your own pace & leave the instant you’re done. go somewhere you’ve never been and just wander around, duck into & out of places as it pleases you. linger as long as you’d like.

It’s not that he’s a bad person. He has a soft heart. He smiles a lot. But he has a demon to fight and I already tried my best to help him. I tried to move him from the area. I tried to get him into rehab. I took him to parenting courses and counseling. Things got better for about six weeks. He was acting positive and he was there every day. Even if we got in a fight, he’d stick around and work things out. But then he started disappearing again. He started getting angry and violent. Then he’d come back on drugs and act like everything was fine. And I wasn’t going to allow it. You can’t just do anything you want and come home to my children. I hate being a single mom. It’s lonely. I hate that I’m playing into an Aboriginal stereotype. But ultimately my dedication is to my kids. I haven’t cut him off completely, but now he’s on his own. He’s got to figure it out himself. He can’t visit my kids until he’s 100 percent.”
