ok, for those of you who don't know, jk rowljng donated £70k to an organisation of Scottish women who wanted the legal definition of a woman to be based on biological sex alone in the uk. today they had this ruled for in court.
the legal definition of a woman in the uk is now based purely on biological sex, which will likely fuel the deconstruction of laws made to protect trans people and fuel new transphobic laws. we are still apparently protected from discrimination though.
the worst part of this is that news reports have been treating this as a good thing. jk rowling is painted as an amazing person in school assemblies. after doing not only what she does on twitter, but actively funding the discrimination of trans people.
One thing that has made me a much more well-adjusted person is a clip I once saw of Hank Green saying that anyone can be in amazing shape as long as being in amazing shape is one of their top three priorities.
(This is obviously a generalization that isn't true for everyone. But it is true for most people and I'm proceeding from there.)
This "top three priorities" framing has genuinely reduced my tendency toward jealousy and self-comparison a lot. Now when I feel envious of someone’s spotless, aesthetic home, I think to myself, “Having a spotless, aesthetic home is probably one of their top three priorities. It’s definitely not one of mine, so I shouldn’t expect my home to look like that.”
Or when I see an influencer with a body that takes a ton of work to maintain: “Maintaining that body is obviously one of her top three priorities, because it’s her livelihood. My livelihood is my brain, so I’m never going to prioritize my body like that.”
It also helps me to identify areas that I actually DO want to prioritize more. I realized in recent years that my envy for my friends who prioritized writing more than I did was NOT going away, so I started to prioritize writing more. (Not top three, but higher priority than it has been in the past.)

As Elon Musk cements his place in history as a fascist tech overlord and the rest of the world looks at us in horror, I really do want to reiterate what I feel will be lost to the history books
Nearly everyone in america has thought and continues to think that Elon is very cringe.
“Nico Di Angelo is a token gay! His coming out scene sucked!” babes I’m BEGGING you to remember 2013 gay characters were not allowed in children’s media.
Lemme say that again: In 2013, it was expected that gay characters would be censored in children’s mass media.
Remember Korra? How she and Asami had to settle for ambiguous handholding rather than a kiss? That was fully a year after House of Hades came out. Nickelodeon said No Gays, the Children™ can’t handle that. Too risky. And people said man that stinks, but that’s how these things go in 2014 America.
Gay marriage was literally still illegal in the vast majority of US states. As of October 8th, 2013 (House of Hades release date) Gay Marriage was only a thing in thirteen fucking states. California had only legalized it that year.
Gay people were still very much on the fringes of society. It was an acceptable political position on both sides of the aisle to be against the existence and equal rights of gay people.
Nico was legitimately a landmark character in queer representation. To my knowledge, there wasn’t before an openly gay main character in a bestselling ya/middle grade fantasy fiction series. It simply was not a thing. They didn’t exist. They weren’t allowed to exist.
I remember people crying. Finally. It was a watershed moment. Kids all across the world finally got someone who represented them. It was such a big fucking deal. And it was controversial!!! Not for the reasons it is today, but because people thought gay kids having representation was inappropriate.
Is Nico’s coming out a great scene? No, these days it leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination and I’m sure Rick wishes he could change it. But the fact that’s the case is a wonderful reflection of how far we’ve come.
All of your gay heroes in children’s media have Nico Di Angelo to thank. It was important, and good. It deserves to be celebrated, even if we’ve progressed past it since.

the irony of insisting something is AI, while being too lazy to click a link and look through the artist’s portfolio and see her work being featured in galleries/shows at various angles is mind rending
Yeah I've noticed a lot of random baseless "this is ai" comments that only happen to appear under a woman's artwork.
Two clicks lead to her Instagram where she has dozens of multimedia pieces using yarn
This one was a video that showed the canvases separately and then they're moved together on that bar that they're hanging from
She also has multiple other multimedia pieces using yarn in different styles and using things like phone cords and computer chips.
I highly recommend people check out her Instagram because she's amazing and only has 16k followers.
sure dude
I want to make stuff.
I enjoy being creative. I like making silly little videos online. Amateur content creation, basically.
But some things have gotten in the way of me doing that lately, and consistently.
A bit about me: I'm autistic. I have an anxiety disorder. Depression. All that fun stuff.
But those alone weren't what was getting in my way.
I've got this pretty intense OCD habit. I call it "Resetting."
Basically, every now and again, I'll have a compulsion to factory reset all of my devices. Phone, PC, Switch. Even my TV.
This can be triggered by a variety of reasons.
App doesn't work correctly? Reset.
Video game glitches? Reset.
Something as small as changing the name of a YouTube channel? Reset.
If that sounds really annoying to you... Yeah. It is.
I almost never back anything up before I do this. As a result, I've barely been able to make any progress on my creative things since everything I do is digital.
Now, why am I telling you this? I thought doing a sort of journal about this might help. I really, truly, want to stop Resetting.
It makes me miserable and has been going on for a few years now. It's basically self sabotage. I've made some progress in between continuous bouts of Resets and I know I can be successful if I put in some true effort.
I'm writing this to keep myself accountable. Even if no one ever reads this (tbh, why would you?), I can at least read it. I can put my thoughts into words. I can have something to look at when my brain wants nothing more than to Reset yet again. I can tell myself why I don't want to keep doing this very inconvenient thing. Why?
I want to make stuff.
