I am guessing that it is supposed to be an overwhelmingly long amount of time, especially for grace and other humans (like the reader) who don't live as long as eridians, while also being impactful for rocky with his eridian lifespan.

But 46 is somehow too big of a number for "years of solitude in space" to matter to me.

It also sounds a little unrealistic? I don't feel like rocky would be at the stage of "knowledge about the system" that he is at when we meet him after 46 years. I feel like he would have much more info to share.

The number also feels too large in the context, to the point where its size stops mattering.

In my opinion, you could just as well have said "yeah rocky was up there for 300 years" and gotten the same effect.
