Some leftover thoughts that I forgot to add to my previous chapter reading plus new ones yipeee. I have A LOT to say this time around.
1. The demonisation of fat women? So good. I see you, George and I appreciate you.
2. Wow, people really oversold book Alicent lmfao. Beyond contributing to the incitement of The Dance, homegirl really isn't relevant in all this beyond popping up a few times to essentially yell TEAM GREEN. The way people were talking about her, I really was expecting far more both from her as a character and the parts she plays in the narrative. I saw people comparing her to Cersei...don't ever disrespect Cersei Lannister's name like that again.
3. Wow, Criston was so underwhelming. Even his death was lame as hell. I suppose subversion of expectations yada yada dishonourable Team Black but, wow. What a nothing character lmao. Show Criston blows him out of the water easily.
4. Having read where Helaena commits suicide (OR DOES SHE?), ngl...I can't believe this is what had people so upset. I'm going to do something daring and controversial: I'm going to criticise George. Gasp. I know. I think his reaction to no Maelor and his seeming confirmation that that's why Helaena kills herself reminds me of what I've said about a lot of House of The Dragon criticisms I've seen: choosing a headcanon and then being upset that the show didn't go with that headcanon. In this case, obviously it's not a headcanon, George knows what really happened but...that's not how Fire and Blood written. Having actually read the passage, nothing definitive points to why Helaena killed herself (allegedly). I'm sure the show could have come up with a very valid reason for why she killed herself during one of the bloodiest wars in Westorosi history, guys. Or, better yet, have her be murdered and provide us with premium anti Team Black fodder since Helaena is pretty much viewed as The Innocent in all this. As the show is now, I think it's a very easy setup for them to still breed the results of Helaena's death even without the Maelor of it all.
5. The Petyr and Varys parallels to Larys are super subtle but, don't worry, George, I caught them. Lmao. I forgot to mention how I've been curious about Larys throughout all this. With him backing Trystane (very similar to the Varys and Young Griff stuff I've heard about seemingly), I wonder if Trystane really is Aegon's son. In the show especially, I wonder if they'll go down this route since they've established a much closer relationship between Larys and Aegon. Maybe they'll keep it ambiguous, that would be fun. Also would provide more fodder for the Young Griff theorists I'm sure lol. Power resides where men believe it resides so on and so forth.
6. Is Joffrey's death the saddest to me so far? Maybe. I did also feel for Maelor and Jaehaerys was obviously terrible but, damn, Joffrey's got such a response out of me. Poor, stupid, young, reckless baby.
7. I also couldn't help but, feel for the dragons. It's not their fault they've been used as weapons of war by these insane, coloniser, incest weirdos. Dreamfyre going out like a G though. Big fan of the revolutionary language and imagery of the smallfolk though. Very subtle there too, George lol. I am curious about this because I have wondered why the people of Westoros continued to let the Targaryens rule post-Dance. I wonder if they'll give me a satisfactory answer. Also, Syrax's death made me super emo. My headcanon is that she did it to protect Rhaenyra and make sure she got out of there. Eugh. Poor baby.
8. Flocking to extremes and fanaticism during times of peril, my beloved. The Shepherd was spitting at times, though. I'm curious whether they'll make him a stranger in the show or a character we know. I think he intentionally adds to the Maegor comparisons Rhaenyra gets. Nice touch, George. I also think it's fun that despite All That the smallfolk still cling to royalty and the power structures they just rebelled against. Nice. Very real and very human. Which, again, I think HoTD misunderstands about The Dance. This isn't a story about revolution or breaking the wheel (at least so based on what I've read so far anyway).
9. Always love when we get all the titles and names of all of the "important people" who died and the thousands who aren't "important enough" are listed as nothing more than a number. Will always hit for me.
10. God, life fucking sucks for Rhaenyra and Alicent. So many of their children dead. Their husbands dead (allegedly I suppose in Daemon's case). Rhaenyra's man was grooming a teenager (which she did get racist and misogynistic about. Fun times). I know Rhaenyra is awful but, I really can't help but, to feel a little bad for her. Also, I know this is meant to punish them for their parts in The Dance happening. Yes, I know. I still feel a bit for them.
11. Holy fuck Rhaenyra just died. I knew it was gonna happen but, jesus. I was surprised by how much of a reaction I had to it. Aegon III is about to be the most traumatised boy in all of Westorosi history jesus christ.

13. Reading about the dragons killing each other is fucking terrible. Deeply worried about HoTD having the budget to show what happened the 2nd go around at Tumbletown (Tumbleton? Can't remember how it's spelled). I really want to see it and I think it's maybe the single most horrifying description of dragon combat to me so far. MY BABY VERMITHOR NOOOOOOO. Also, is Silverwing alive???? I forgot. They'll probably mention her later if she is.
14. Oh Addam :( You didn't owe those bigoted losers shit, including Rhaenyra in her hypocritical paranoia but, god you made an oath and you stuck to it. I think I had tears in my eyes reading the passages about him. What a fucking legend. Him and Seasmoke. Eugh. I'm getting emotional thinking about them all over again.
15. Pour one out for Daeron. Bit of an underwhelming end to him too but, makes sense given the circumstance.
16. Is Larys just helping Aegon because he thinks it's the right thing to do? Or maybe, much like Varys, he wants to set an easier path for Trystane to become king for...some reason (by being pro-a man/boy succeeding and pro-usurping or maybe arguing he's actually Aegon II's son but Aegon is too injured to rule?).
17. Well, Rhaenyra's death was aptly terrible to read thanks, George 👍🏾
18. Too bad Aemond is dead, Aegon and him could have commiserated over kinslaying.
19. Again, very curious as to how they'll handle Hugh in the show. I can see show Ulf following book Ulf's trajectory but, I am sooooo interested to see what happens with show Hugh.
20. Oh also, George loves his character archetypes huh lol. The Shepherd is giving High Sparrow in current day Westoros that Cersei is dealing with so much it's crazy. And I've mentioned all the Larys and Varys and Petyr similarities too.

1. Oh Rhaenyra, it was fun while it lasted, girl. It was really a wrap when she started letting the voices win. I do find the Maegor comparisons odd, though. Green propaganda sure is something lol. However, it was a nice touch having the Shepherd be introduced while she was in power.
2. Can't believe a passage with Daemon got the strongest emotional reaction from me. Him and Nettles parting did hit. Despite the grooming of it all, that shit was sad. What can I say? I am not immune.
3. Speaking of not being immune, that fight between him and Aemond was epic as fuck and I do wonder if they have the budget to fully realise it in House of The Dragon. Book Daemon and Aemond are such shounen anime fodder lmao /derogatory and slightly affectionate.
3. Poor one out for sweet, baby Maelor. That being said, I feel like even without him existing, there's enough to justify people developing a bad taste in their mouth about Rhaenyra lol. I don't think we necessarily need a 2nd child dying brutally (if anything I think he works more as a broader commentary that's already happening about how much war sucks).
4. The Greens sure do love their war crimes hey. I suppose you could argue Team Black started it first with Jahaerys but, man, for a side that's all about moral superiority and appealing to the law they sure do enjoy their crimes against humanity lol.
5. The way I would have beheaded Alicent so fast for the shit she was saying to Rhaenyra 💀 The way I had to pause my reading to unclench. Like. Sister. You are losing right now and are actively a fucking criminal and you want to spout some bastard bigotry?????? Hello????? Do you not understand your situation??????? Just a goofy idiot. Look at how dumb bigotry will have you acting.
(Rhaenyra falls into this too I fear given her misogyny and bastard bigotry too. Sigh. I knew it was coming but, Rhaenyra. Girl. Smh. White feminism icon though, they gone love you over there, girl.)
6. I'm curious how they'll play Hugh's betrayal in particular in HoTD. My first guess was he'll turn because he'll see how Rhaenyra is treating the smallfolk but, that means he'll also not be cool with a lot the stuff the Greens and Ulf are doing so hm. Maybe he'll go rogue and die an actual hero of the people. He better not have my baby Vermithor caught up in some dumb shit though.
7. I can see why book Aegon likers were upset about his show portrayal. He's definitely more likable in the book. Which isn't saying much since he's barely in it and the bar show Aegon set isn't exactly high lol. I did applaud him for not letting Rhaenyra touch the money. Smart. (Maybe not his idea but, I'll give it to him.)
8. If they want me to stop liking the Northerners, they have to stop making them so epic 🤷🏾♀️ There's legitimate criticisms to have of The Starks but, not gonna lie, I feel like a lot of poeple just want to not be like the other girls when it comes to them. Anyways, Cregane hasn't even pulled up yet but, this chapter? Common Northerner W.
9. A Meleys and Tessarion battle would have gone crazy. Also, Daeron seems cool. I was gonna say a little overrated but, no actually given his age and lack of experience, he is legitimately impressive. Definitely better than all his book siblings. Probably his whole side of the family in the book tbh.
10. So excited to see Otto die. I knew it was coming but, god, I cannot wait to see it on my screen. It'll hit so much harder since show Otto is far better and my boy Rhys is going to EAT that scene up.
11. I appreciate what Nettles does against Targaryen propaganda in the narrative. The bastard bigotry in general is bad enough but, having her physically be everything the Targaryens are not was a nice touch. The questions it raises about dragonriders in general, the Targaryen Exceptionalism propaganda Jaehaerys was spouting and the commentary on desirability, particularly being potentially desired by a Valyrian Man tm. I personally like to think her and Daemon were more father and daughter for my own sanity but, even then, Rhaenyra blaming this black, teenage girl for bewitching her husband and not thinking he could be legitimately into her was *chef's kiss.* So good. For her as a character, for Nettles narratively and Daemon's reaction is probably the most likable he's been to me so far. I haven't started season 3 but, her not existing is another major point they miss that The Dance makes. They can still illustrate it (and they have with a lot of the smallfolk scenes but, I'd argue that's more class and anti-war commentary broadly minus that one scene with Meleys's head) but, I wonder if people (both broadly and behind HoTD) realise The Dance is largely meant to be extremely critical of House Targaryen lol. Hell, you could argue that's a major point of Fire and Blood as a whole. People who act like people are only critical of the Targaryens to be contrarian baffle me btw. Like. You're telling there's no eyebrows to be raised about dragon riding (and likely fucking), nazi, incest people who colonised nearly an entire continent???? I have to assume you read these books and watched the shows with your eyes closed lmfao. Anyway.
