Fact Checking Some Myths About Aventurine and the IPC
Especially in light of Jade's new myriad celestia trailer and the reveal of the other Stonehearts, I've seen a ton of wild claims about Aventurine--particularly how he's an unwilling member of the Stonehearts and needs to be saved from the IPC--that just aren't sitting right with me because they're based significantly more on the fanon take that Aventurine is an "innocent victim" than any actual evidence displayed in the game. So I wanted to take the time to collect some in-game evidence to see if we can sort out what Aventurine's actual relationship to the IPC is. Time to do some fact checking--this is a long one, buckle up!
Claim #1: Aventurine was sentenced to die by the IPC.
Verdict: There's no actual evidence that Aventurine was ever sentenced to anything.
I really like this post and your blog as a whole! I feel it's really helped me come to more of an understanding of Aventurine's character, particularly some aspects of his backstory I had found confusing. That being said, it seems like a lot of your points here come as a direct response to frustration with his woobification, and in doing so downplay the control the IPC has over him to combat the narrative of him as a pure victim with no power over his life. I also agree this is an issue and a popular characterization of Aventurine, I've read one too many fics that forget his hyper-competence in favor of having Ratio as a strong man to "save" him, but it is also true that he is a victim of the IPC beyond just the obvious. I don't think you're contesting that, just downplaying the severity of his position with them somewhat. Particular focusing on "Claim #2" because I have little issue with the evidence presented in the other claims, I do believe Aventurine would be executed if he attempted to leave the IPC and that's what was on the table during his trial after Penacony - I don't believe he'd be executed for something smaller than breaking his cornerstone or trying to leave the IPC, however. As you said, he's not going to be executed at the drop of the hat and I don't believe that's threatened frequently. He's too valuable to the IPC, anyway. While I don't think the IPC particularly cares about Aventurine's previous crimes on any personal/moral level, they only care about what can be used and, I do think they're using his position as someone who entered the IPC with basically nothing and as a criminal who could be put to death/be sent to a trial against him. What would going back to Kakavasha mean? To the IPC, Kakavasha is a "fine name but one destined to buried under dirt" going off Jade's line. She calls Topaz by her old name, not Aventurine, implying this rejection of identity is something unique to him. If he were to attempt to quit the Stonehearts, he would be attempting to return to that identity he's explicitly been told he can't go back to. I also believe the presentation of the trailer being as dramatic as it is points to it being more serious than simply losing a job/a memory wipe or something of the sorts, although that's more vibe as you said than anything with evidence. I know the stonehearts are very dramatic people, but kicking up such a fuss over Aventurine losing his job if it wouldn't have dramatic consequences would be odd. As for Obsidian's bloodbath line, I believe it can be taken somewhat more literally considering everything we've seen of her character and the fact that she's literally bathing in blood. I just don't think she'd get overly excited about something not involving blood.
I won't contest your points on the second claim because I think, as you note, that topic lends itself to a lot of speculation. We have no idea what the IPC would do if Aventurine tried to leave because he never has, so whether people see an execution on the table seems to be entirely down to how they read the Stonehearts' vibes, and everyone is entitled to their own read.
However, I must say, in regards to Obsidian:
Those fruits on the right are pomegranates, and what she bites at the end of her portion looks like a cherry. I really don't think she's bathing in blood at all--it's fruit juice, and she's just being extremely dramatic about it.
This is Star Rail, so she could indeed be vampire queen from vampire planet, but...
I honestly think she's got about an equal chance of just being the slightly edgier Star Rail equivalent of Fischl, melodrama and weird Germanic influences perserved.
Oh, I see! I didn't catch that. Thanks for the clarification on Obsidian.
Do you have any thoughts on my points about Aventurine's past/how he entered the IPC putting him in a unique situation when it comes to trying to exit, though? That's really what the point of my response was and the other points could have been left out.
In terms of Aventurine's background putting him in a unique situation, I do have some thoughts; I just try not to reblog from people responding to my posts too much to cause any disagreement or anything. But since I was invited this time! 😂😂
My first thought is that it's difficult to tell how unique Aventurine's criminal background makes him because we just don't know the other Stonehearts yet. It could be that half of them were rampant criminals before getting "legitimized" by joining the IPC lol. Opal in particular gives me big mafia don vibes, for one!
However, being more serious, I think my take on Aventurine's past affecting his current status with the IPC is based on extrapolating what would actually be practical for the IPC to hold over his head based on jurisdiction.
First: At least as far as we know, Aventurine is still a citizen of Sigonia, and not any other nation, planet, or entity that might be run by the IPC. The game goes out of its way to clarify that Aventurine did not have an "Interstellar Refugee Travel Permit" which would presumably allow him to renounce Sigonian citizenship and attain refugee status/asylum on another planet in the IPC's alliance legally.
Highly neglected aspect of Aventurine's character: He was an illegal immigrant.
If he has new citizenship now, we're never told of it at all in-game, leaving the impression that he is still an active Sigonian citizen.
Therefore, all the murders he committed prior to joining the IPC were committed under the jurisdiction of the Sigonian Sovereignty, and it's with the Sigonian Sovereignty--not the IPC--that he was wanted for, and liable to stand trial for, murder. This is why the IPC legally had to relocate Aventurine to Sigonia for even their fraud investigation (which was supposed to lead to a trial), which Diamond consented to:
And why the Sigonian Sovereignty lodged a formal complaint about Aventurine being permitted to join the IPC:
The IPC, and even the Interstellar Congress whom the IPC seems to be recruiting for, simply don't have jurisdiction over the murders Kakavasha committed. They couldn't try him or punish him specifically for those crimes even if they wanted to.
So that leaves the IPC with jurisdiction only over his fraud charges, and while we have no idea what the laws of the IPC's Interstellar Congress are for fraud charges, I feel like execution might be pretty extreme just for economic loss. I don't know--maybe his fraud got people killed. We're never told that anywhere in-game though; it's treated only as a loss of resources and a significant amount of money.
I'm not going to downplay the fraud issue; obviously under normal conditions the IPC would prosecute their enemies to the fullest extent when it comes to loss of money and resources. However, I just don't get the impression that the Stonehearts (at least), even actually care that much about the fraud. Ultimately, they gained from the fraud because it brought them Aventurine, who is capable of generating so much wealth and success for them that anything he cost them previously is just a drop in the bucket.
It's like... you drop a penny on the ground and you lean down to pick it up but instead find a pristine $100 bill lying there unclaimed. The penny is completely forgotten instantaneously, because what has been gained is of so much more value.
So then the question becomes, "Would these crimes come back up if he tried to leave the IPC?"
And I guess I would just say, realistically, would they need to? Would the Stonehearts really need to go "We're going to turn you over to Sigonia for a trial for murder!" or "We're going to send you to jail for the Egyhazo fraud!" if they really wanted Aventurine out of the picture? I honestly just can't see them even needing to stoop low enough to bring up his past crimes, because, frankly, if they want to disappear him bad enough, I highly doubt they'd take a legal route with it. I mean, who would even raise an investigation if Aventurine just disappeared one day with no explanation? Not Sigonia, that's for sure! And it's not like he has any family to press charges on his behalf...
Outside of the Stonehearts, basically only Ratio was would even care Aventurine was gone.
And if we're arguing that they're holding these crimes over his head in order to keep him from leaving... I just don't think that's the case either. (First, they don't need to, because he isn't trying to leave lol.) Aventurine even calls himself a perfect escape artist in-game. I really don't think the threat of a possible criminal trial on a planet he will almost certainly never go back to is really going to be any kind of serious threat to him.
Personally, I just don't think his past crimes have any bearing on his current status with the IPC at all because there just isn't any need for them to have any bearing anymore.
So why does Jade tell Aventurine that his old name will be buried in the dirt?
I mean... He did literally kill multiple people. Not one person, but like... multiple people. Including some entirely innocent people!
Topaz came in as a child who had never committed a single crime. Kakavasha came into the IPC having a criminal record including multiple murders and having scammed not just one but three different departments/organizations under his old identity. I think it's kind of reasonable for her to tell him "You're going to have to change your identity, son." 😂
But I'm also inclined to think that this is Jade's way of recognizing that Kakavasha choosing to become Aventurine wasn't just a name change for him--it was an entire identity change from desert slave scrambling in the sands to a life in the lap of luxury. Aventurine notes in his character story that he thought of himself differently before he joined the IPC:
Until Topaz, who has a planet and family and past she could go back and chooses not to, Aventurine joining the IPC basically meant bidding farewell to his entire past. He can't go back, literally or figuratively, and I think Jade telling him he has to discard that name is also her way of telling him he has to discard his entire old life--he cannot be or think of himself as a lowly Sigonian slave anymore; he has to shake off the sands and blood of the past and become Aventurine. Unfortunately, this also means that Jade is (perhaps without knowing it or just not caring), asking him to also give up the good elements of his past identity with his family. The price she is asking him to pay...
And I guess as for the last point, about why the Stonehearts were being so dramatic if they were just going to fire him--I'd say that might have a more meta explanation: that was players first introduction to most of the Stonehearts. Of course they're going to be super dramatic--it's Hoyo's first salvo in marketing future characters they want to make millions of dollars off of. 😂 They can't have an uninteresting or lowkey entrance, of course!
Anyway, that's my take on it! I've always said I don't think Aventurine can quit the Stonehearts; my stance is just that that doesn't have anything to do with his past crimes in particular. I don't think anyone can leave the Stonehearts easily at all, whether it's Aventurine, Topaz, Jade, or any of the others.
I lost my 50/50 and got him. I love him, but can i get Sparkle now mihoyo ;-;

Yanqing, fearing that Jing Yuan will fall to Mara, strikes a deal with an Aeon-level entity. His life for Jing Yuan. Take his life, his future, his memory, and in return, ensure the General never becomes Mara-struck.
But that’s his son, how could Jing Yuan not fall to Mara if he were to know his son gave his life for him. So the clock rewinds back to a happier time. The future re-writes itself when the HCQ is happy and alive and Jing Yuan is never alone.
But there is an ache in his heart that grows for no reason. A deep, paternal love that has no where to go. Yanqing no longer exists. Jing Yuan will never find the baby in ruin and rubble. Never coax the boy to drink milk and watch over him at night when in the throes of fever. He’ll never be able to clip on those beautiful silver charms carrying wishes for him son to live long and happy. He can’t tell stories of his adventure or gift his son his first sword. Mimi will never have a little master to guard and keep warm at night.
Worst of all, Yanqing will never get to have a father who didn’t have the world on his shoulders. Whose smile will always reach his eyes and have so much energy in him despite being 700. He won’t have an aunt who’s the Sword Champion, who would train Yanqing kindly and gently adjust his footwork with a nudge. Nor meet a skilled Foxian who’d teach him how to fly a Star skiff better than anyone on the Luofu. His injuries won’t be bandaged by the Imbibitor Lunae as he’s scolded for his recklessness before being sat down for dinner and stuffed with his favorite food. Yanqing won’t know a legendary Furnace Master who could craft him swords and sneak him in to see the sword auctions.
But for Yanqing, it’s worth it. This is his filial duty. His repayment to the General who save him, raised him, trained him. A life where his Baba would be able to live as freely and happily as possible.
