I’ve been barely making time for this blog for a long while and I think it’s finally time to let go. I’ve had a wonderful experience here, but my current life balance is not one that can spare the extra attention this place requires. It’s not fair to all of you for me to limp along so poorly, so I feel I must respectfully bow out. Perhaps we shall meet again at another time. Virion’s hand slid higher and he lightly scratched at his cheek with a thumbnail. He could draw it out, of course. Delay the answer. But eventually Sully would get to it all the same. Was it not all the better to be forthright first? “….I was rebuffed, suffice to say. By the flat of her hand and the wedge of her heel. Me, Virion, no? Ha!” He picked at the fabric on his knee.
Again, her fingers twitched, but instead of tightening after, this time they went slack. The concern that had built up within her seemed to simultaneously evaporate and condense into something like a rock seated deep under her ribs. To think she’d wasted her compassion on something so… so frivolous.
Sully’s glare returned in full force. “Gah!” she spat. “Next time, just spit it out sooner so I know not to waste my damn worry. Hell, I’ll bet whatever rebuff you got was entirely deserved.”
She felt like hitting him herself. It didn’t make sense, really. She was far angrier than she should be, by any logic. She didn’t quite understand it, and it made her excessively uncomfortable that she didn’t. Sully stood up to leave.
“Truly?” Virion asked somberly. He met her glare with a ruminating look, thinking fully about her words, treating them with the same seriousness Sully surely had in speaking them. But all too soon, she stood up. “W-wait! Please! Allow me to help you. There is still…” He gestured to the blades. He smoothed his front and tightened the cuffs on his sleeves. He may have been caught in an inelegant state, but that was no cause to remain so disheveled. “It is the least I can do, surely.”
Sully stopped and looked down. An embarrassed blush crept up her cheeks – she had completely forgotten about the mess, somehow. It wasn’t like her at all to get distracted like that.
Of course, realizing that she had, in fact, gotten distracted just made her angrier.
“I should damn well hope so,” she grunted. “It took me hours to do all this work. Hell, I would make you do it on your own, if I trusted you to do a decent job of it.”
Sully’s expression darkened further as she eyed the mess of blades. Back to the whetstone it was, then. What a rotten day this was turning out to be.
“I am at your service, of course.” Virion knelt to the blades and, with greater care this time, reached for them. He lined them up efficiently, ignoring the pain in his hand whenever his stretched the palm. All alone it would take him quite a while to reorganize, but if that’s what Sully needed, he was certainly willing to do it and without complaint. At the same time, Virion still couldn’t help but think to the incident that led to his hiding in here in the first place. He had only but offered his assistance, had he not? Was he too forward, or had he misspoken? He gingerly removed a lance head from the shrinking pile. It had to have been something wrong to have deserved his treatment. If he pondered it enough- he carefully aligned the blades he had straightened so far--he could fix such an ignominious blunder and prevent its repetition in the future.
Virion pursed his lips, “I do keep my bow polished,” he said with a degree of pride, “That is cause for being in here. But, you are right. That is not the reason.” It was obvious enough without him mentioning it, of course. His bow was nowhere near him. She wouldn’t like his reason though. That made him hesitate. “I had…. an unfortunate encounter earlier.” He put his free hand gingerly to his cheek.
Sully’s fingers twitched around his hand, and her muscles tensed. Her eyebrows furrowed, deepening her glare, though it wasn’t quite aimed at Virion anymore. A bad feeling lingered over her like… well, like something ominous. “An unfortunate encounter? What the hell does that mean?”

Lon’qu just couldn’t comprehend why everyone seemed to be so fixated on it– he had been with the Shepherds for some time, hadn’t they all learned of it by this point?
It wasn’t as if he didn’t want to work on moving forward, but it would take a lot of time and work. “That leaves more women for you to monopolize.”
“M-monopolize? Please, you misunderstand,” about a great many things, of course, but that was not something one simply started blurting out, oh no. Besides, it was only of one that Virion had started this conversation. “My concern is, at this juncture, for your own well being. You are a skilled swordsman, nearly unparalleled in the art–but,” he frowned slightly, “as the healing arts are so often bestowed by the feminine hands amongst our merry band, I was curious how you fared. T’would be a terrible case if you could not seek aid in a time of need.” Given Lon’qu’s stern countenance and gruff response, Virion was not sure he should expect much by way of reply.
“… Libra and Brady can both heal,” Lon’qu stated, matter-of-factly. It didn’t exactly cross him that that might not have been the ultimate issue here. He typically tried to nurse his own wounds when he could, as having anyone close enough to him and trying to tend to his injuries, male or female or anything in between, was enough to make him rather uneasy.
Virion was right, though, in that the majority of those who specialized in healing tended to be women. That was a trend he had noticed, actually, and was rather distraught by. Maribelle was hard enough to outrun when she was on horseback, and the last thing Lon’qu needed was hordes of women chasing him down on the battlefield and trying to heal him.
“Why are you so concerned all of a sudden?” Was he actually bleeding out on the the carpet and he didn’t even realize it?
“True, but they cannot be everywhere at once, I am sorry to say. And this, “he waved a finger, “is no mere recent concern. We may have spoken little before, but that does not mean I am ill-concerned should you vanish from the field of battle. If you can neither seek nor receive help from the nearest healer, how am I or anyone to know how to help you?” How even did he survive being assigned to collect supplies for the army, for that matter? A market would be swarming with lovely ladies.

She was still puffing with anger – well, mostly frustration, really – but it didn’t feel right to keep yelling at him. She was only adding insult to injury at this point. Something was clearly wrong, and yet… Knowing that just made her more annoyed.
She pulled his fingers open to inspect his palm. “I didn’t think I’d have to lecture you, of all people, about grabbing the sharp end of a weapon with your bare hands. What gives?”
Virion lurched forward, dazed expression sliding slowly from his hand to Sully’s expression as she inspected it herself. “W-well, I…” he cleared his throat, collecting his thoughts. “I did not expect you in the weapons tent so soon, or anyone, really.” Gingerly, he prodded the flat side of one of the other blades laying askew around them. “Did you sharpen all of these yourself? Such magnificent work!” His fingers twitched in her hand.

Recognizing Ricken, he smiled, “Making tea, of course~.” He adjusted his kettle across the pages of a very worn, somewhat mangled fire tome. Runes glowed gently beneath it. “Did you want some?” He tossed his hair over a shoulder, pulling a cup from a hip pouch and setting it next to the one already sitting on the table. “It is my own medley, of course.”
The look of concern spread across the mage’s face. That Fire tome looks like it was about to break any second,
“Should I… get a new Fire tome?”
He forgot to answer Virion’s offer.
Virion followed the young man’s gaze to his magical boiler. The tome was perhaps a tad worn. Always in appreciation of simple elegance, the tattered edges did have a way of looking ugly beneath the polished gleam of the kettle’s sides. One could not be wasteful, however. “If you have one on hand, you are more than welcome to replace it. It was being used for naught else before, however, and I thought to give it at least some purpose.” He squinted gently at the glowing runes before wafting some of the steam towards his face with an open palm. He breathed deeply, holding it in for a time, then releasing with a small shake of his hand. Not ready just yet.
It was only a short glimpse, but it was enough. Sully knew only one person with hair that color.
For a moment, her rage gave way to confusion. Why was he, of all people, here? And hiding, no less? It struck her as very odd. Then her eyes fell on the mess of blades, many of them covered in dirt now and most likely in serious need of resharpening. All that work, undone in a heartbeat. She wasn’t sure how many of the blades would do without being maintenanced all over again, and quite frankly, she didn’t even want to think about it. “Ruffles!” she roared. “What in the name of all hell do you think you’re doing?!”
Virion jolted at the sound of the familiar sobriquet, his stomach sinking deeper. Slowly, he turned to peek around the edge of the crate, then crawled over to to the pile of scattered goods. “Goodness, were you carrying all of these? Here, let me help you with them.” He reached out, and careful swept some of the blades together with the flat of his hand. Feeling a prick of pain he yanked his hand up, inspecting it with the other. “Ah!” He was usually more graceful than this. Such inelegance.

Sully heaved up the crate of weapons, propping it up against her leg for support. The freshly sharpened and oiled blades within rattled as she moved the crate, each carefully wrapped in rags to keep the edges from hitting anything. She had organized everything according to the type of blade – such as, say, the tip of an iron lance, or a bronze one – and knew precisely where each of them was within the crate. All was planned for easy organization as she got back to the arms tent, where all the weapons were stored. Well, almost all. She had not considered that the weight of each individual blade would combine to a crate more heavy than she was used to carrying. She huffed as she leaned the crate against the front of her armor, her arms straining already. It’ll be fine, she told herself. She was Sully, after all, she was the Bull! A stupid crate of weaponry wasn’t about to be her undoing. So, she braced herself and began to walk – slowly – towards the arms tent, willing her arms to last all the way there. It wasn’t that far, after all. It would be fine. And so it might have been, if she hadn’t, mere feet before reaching the safety of the arms tent, stumbled on something. But she did, and the crate not only fell but shattered on impact with the ground, sending just-sharpened blades flying everywhere, rags and all. Furious, Sully pivoted around to see what it was that she had stumbled over.
Too late, Virion tucked his legs to his chest, wincing as he heard (and felt) the crash of supplies. He shuffled backwards, around the edge of a crate and hopefully out of view. He hadn’t intended anyone to find him in here, let alone cause such a mess. Glancing past the corner of the crate, he felt the pit of his stomach drop as he realized it was Sully whom he’d caused distress. He bit his lip, tucking himself as small as possible. Maybe she hadn’t seen him.

Ricken let out an early morning yawn as he carried two fairly thick novels through the camp. He lifted a hand to rub the sleep from his eyes before drearily creaking the barracks door open to return the books.
Once he walked in, unexpected warmth flooded the fairly large room making the mage slightly more drowsy. A faint smell of boiled leaves hit. Ricken managed to force his head up and eyes open to find a familiar blue-haired archer,
“Virion…what are you doing?”
He already knew the answer, but the question slipped out nonetheless.

“Warming your feet, hmm? I might have thought it a bit too warm for such things earlier, but with the sun setting so quickly I can see how it would be appealing, invigorating even.” Virion took a bundle of sticks from under his arm and carefully fed them into the blaze, possibly the last fuel it would receive for the night. Glancing about the fire, she seemed to be the last to share in its glow. Perhaps that was the cause for her semi-recumbent choice of seating position. “There is nothing wrong with them, I hope? Twould be a shame to find that you were suffering some ailment with only a dying fire to allay your pains.” He leaned over, watching her face in the flickering llight.
{ ♦ } - “I-It has gotten a lot colder since the sun disappeared over the horizon.” She’d still been a bit on edge from the sudden appearance of another, but that wouldn’t stop her from continuing the conversation offered to her.
“They’re just… Sore. Something a healing stave shouldn’t be wasted on.”
The princess let out a small groan, reminded of the dull pain in her feet. All those training exercises and marching formations… It took a toll on someone who’s boots weren’t exactly made for that sort of thing.
Maybe she could pretend sickness tomorrow… It’d be a lot easier than the upcoming march.
“Wasted? I do not think any stave should be considered wasted for such a thing. Your feet are indispensable to you, whatever should you do if they did not cure in the night? Perhaps I can be of assistance in some way? Something I can fetch for you perhaps, if not a stave then a salve.” Virion exhaled a dramatic gust, “As wonderful as the the heat of this flame is, it can only do so much for your aches.” He frowned, looking down upon her with concern.
