The World Isn’t Quiet Here

happy to report that there’s still nothing funnier in the known universe than klaus baudelaire failing to hold a martini glass

run away from home. ride a rickety trolley. put on a disguise. observe the people around you. help your local fire department put out a fire. stay at a sinister hotel. write a book. write two books. attend an opera. drink tea as bitter as wormwood. skip rocks on an empty beach. send a letter to your loved one with no return address.

Being in the asoue fandom has fundamentally changed how I consume other media in the sense that it’s made me not take everything at face value. A family tree that’s supposedly canon? How do we know? Who authored it in the universe? What are some potential motives here?

It’s comforting in a way. It’s like no matter how far I stray from ASOUE, that little piece of the books and the fandom will always be with me. I’ve always been a good reader but asoue made me a better one because it forced me to draw my own conclusions and read between the, sometimes impossibly thin, lines. No situation, and no person, is as it seems

so there’s a post some1 made where they were like “quigley is a gross pervert and shouldn’t have survived” and also “the fandom hates duncan” and a bunch of other shit and quite honestly i am Far Too Tired to deal with that shit so we’re just going to throw the blogger and their whole suitcase away.

The relationship Kit has with the Baudelaires is heartbreaking, heartwarming, and intriguing. The only somewhat similar relationship is the Baudelaires relationship with Monty and maybe Justice Strauss but there’s still something different with Kit. She told them the most about, well, everything. She fed them and tied up violet’s hair and told them how much they’ve grown. They helped her give birth and they were with her when she died. These are all intimate moments and they were all with Kit

1 thing i love so much about asoue is the super transparent literary references. 1) because it can never come off as Look How Cultured and Well Read Daniel Handler is since kids will miss 99% of the references but 2) it means those names and phrases get etched into your brain when youre a kid and you get to spend basically the rest of your life uncovering where they came from…. i read these books like ten years ago and now I’m in college watching the cabinet of dr. Caligari for my film class. its like you love asoue as a kid and then lemony snicket forces you to play the game with him for the rest of your life
