“ i just want to make sure i have this straight . you , completely knowing that we had plans tonight got drunk - and i’m assuming high , and passed out . “ god , did she sound like her mother right now . if she wasn’t so angry , she would probably laugh about it . though the rage that coursed through her body prevented any bit of that . “ no , kenzie . i don’t understand because you never talk to me about it . you shut me out yet every time i’m upset you push me to talk to you . “ she wasn’t mad that he pushed her to talk , in fact , she liked it - maggie had grown up bottling things up until something small broke her , like a broken plate or a spilled coffee . she had summed it all up to kenzie wanting her to talk so that she didn’t end up doing drugs and drinking ; so she didn’t end up like him . “ if you don’t want to talk to me about your problems then i honestly don’t know what we’re doing here , because we’ve got to talk . relationships are about communication and if i’m the only one talking then - “ she stopped herself , eyes searching his as she shrugged . the last thing she wanted was for this to end , but maggie wouldn’t allow the rest of her life to go on like this , either .
a feeling of dread washed over kenzie when she put things the way she did. his getting drunk and high had nothing to do with her or their plans. buthe couldn’t blame her for assuming that, “baby no, i mean yes -- yes i drank knowing we had plans tonight. but it wasn’t about that it was separate, okay..” the man was basically frozen in place a foot or two away from her. he knew she was right. he knew that he had been a hypocrite. he knew that maggie would never understand if he didn’t do something about it. what happened next was an internal swelling of emotions. everything overcame him and it was like he was back in that night. that time. waking up to what he found that morning was something that kenzie would never get over, especially at the rate he was going through things. it had been years, and he still refused to accept his friends death. harboring guilt was the main thing holding kenzie in the trap of alcohol and drugs and his own emotions. the man snapped, turning around to push over something which ended up just bing some magazines on a side table. “no you won’t get it maggie. no one will ever understand what i’m going through,” truthfully he just turned around for the dramatic throwing of magazines onto the floor so he wouldn’t have to look at her. he was shouting at first, “no amount of therapy ever gets you through waking up to your best friend dead, a door away from you. a room away from you. nothing.” he didn’t like telling that to people. even the people that knew he was there from the day it happened, “you don’t live life every day wondering would’ve happened if maybe you just drank a little less. wondering if maybe you would’ve woken up to the sound of it, you could’ve called help and maybe saved him.”

“ i’m sure i can work with whatever you got. ” she smiled as her small frame followed him to the kitchen, her eyes looking around at her surroundings once again. last night, the girl was far too occupied with the male currently in front of her to take much notice of his apartment. “ thank you. ” she smiled at him, taking a big sip from the glass. “ well, now that you mention it… i’m pretty sure you left me blanket-less, like, five times last night. ” she teased, exaggerating the one time he actually did hog the blanket. jasmine didn’t mind it one bit. he was plenty comfortable to cuddle with and it was a million times better than just sleeping alone in her own bed after a facetime call with him. “ so how about those pancakes? the pantry is…. that one? ” the girl looked around, pointing at what she assumed to be the pantry, of course waiting for his go-signal before going to open it. “ hope you’re ready to taste the best boxed pancakes of your life. ”
the man leaned casually against his counter after handing her the glass of water, “ no problem babe, ” he grinned. arms crossed loosely across his chest as he let out a little yawn, still adjusting to being awake. normally he hung out in bed longer than they had, not that he minded. when she teased him about his blanket stealing he couldn’t help but laugh, rolling his eyes dramatically as he opened his mouth to reply, “ oh man... you poor, cold, innocent thing... i hope i didn’t scare you off from bedsharing with me so quickly. ” the man stood back up, gesturing around his kitchen, “ yep that’s the pantry, this cabinet down here houses the pans, and this drawer has the whisks and spatulas and all those goodies. ” pushing himself up the man took a seat on the counter, folding his hands into his lap, “ i am ready for pancakes and a show. ”

her hands were shaking as he spoke , her feet halted in the kitchen , turning to face him . tears brimmed her eyes as she looked over him , heart beating fast in her chest . “ did you fall asleep before or after you drank a bottle of - “ she paused “ rum ? is that what you’re drinking this week . “ maggie was usually understanding when it came to kenzie , she was well aware that he had things that had gone on in his life before she came around . she didn’t push to find out what they were , that would happen in its own time . though she was starting to get fed up . “ yeah , you did fuck up . “ her arms crossed in front of her chest , blinking the traitor tears away . the tears were both from anger and sadness , though she would do her best to pretend that she wasn’t on the verge of tears . “ i can’t keep doing this , kenz . i can’t keep pretending that all of this is okay , that when you stand me up it’s okay , or that when you show up to things high as a kite it’s okay . because it’s not . “ maggie knew he knew that , but at this point she thought it seemed like a game . how far can she be pushed before she breaks ? she was nearing that point , that was for sure .
she was definitely more angry than he had ever seen her, drawing in a deep breath as he let her say what she needed to. he ran a hand over his face, as he tried to gather a good enough response. “ after i drank, yeah... “ he didn’t see any sense in lying about it. cautiously he took a step towards her, wanting to wrap her into a hug and calm her down but he knew it would backfire. the truth was kenzie didn’t tell anyone other than those who knew him from before his issues begun about his issues. it wasn’t because he didn’t want them to know, but it just wasn’t something that could be brought up so easily. so on the outside he just seemed to be a drug addict alcoholic -- nothing more , nothing less. but in reality kenzie was struggling every day. drugs and alcohol were his only way to get through it. “it’s not okay maggie , i know it’s not okay. and you can do way better than me, i know you can. but i’m just.. you don’t understand. i wish i could stop being drunk or high or whatever else but i just can’t maggie. i’ve been trying. and i’m hoping i get there, but there’s just too much going on in my head -- i can’t kick it like that. but believe me i’m trying, baby i promise i’m trying. i... just don’t .. it’s more than you know, ok? but i don’t want you to give up on me...” his voice was soft now, he was vulnerable. this could very well be the night they broke up, before he could ever better himself, before he could ever tell her.

angry was an understatement . maggie could feel her blood boiling at this point , pacing back and forth in her living room as she frustratedly ran her fingers through her hair . it wasn’t a huge date , she hadn’t gotten a charge for a missed reservation , and it wasn’t their anniversary or anything . however , maggie was beginning to get fed up with the late arrivals , the stoned arrivals , and everything in between . the chinese food she had ordered sat on her counter , cold by now . hearing a knock at the door , her head snapped up , brown eyes locking to the apartment door . she wanted to just let him stand out there at her door for as long as she had waited for him , but the next thing she knew , maggie was ripping open the door . she glared at him , her jaw clenching as she looked over him . her head shook before turning back around , leaving him in the doorway . || @verbatxms
when kenzie came back to reality off one of his higher highs, he realized he was late. not just a little late, but like really late to maggie’s. kenzie’s drug abuse came in waves, he would be fine and just use it to get by for weeks, and then for others it completely took over. right now it was taking over. this was the point where his relationships usually ended, despite his best efforts. “fuck!” he shouted to the empty living room as he got up and frantically searched for his keys, making sure he had his wallet before getting into his car and speeding over to the girl’s apartment. for the most part, maggie had been overly understanding of his issues -- without even knowing them. she never held his drug use against him, and just wanted what was best for him, but he knew she was just like anyone else -- she had a limit. and each time he was late or each time he was high he knew he was pushing her closer. he contemplated stopping at the store and getting flowers, but it would only make him more late. when he finally knocked on the door he waited a short period before it was open. the look on her face told him everything he needed to know, everything he had expected. “maggie, i --” he tried to start talking but he was already seeing the back of her head. a deep breath drew in through his nose, stepping inside and shutting the door behind him to keep the cold out, “baby, i’m so sorry. i passed out and just didn’t wake back up in time, i slept through all my notifications,” he explained, which was only half of the truth, he was asleep it was just drug induced, “i’m sorry mags, i fucked up. i’m sorry, i’m really fucking sorry.” hell, she could probably smell the alcohol still on his breath, but he wasn’t drunk anymore -- he was sober and ready to face anything she had to throw at him.
