I know it sounds silly but hear me out.

Sanji grew up with hard men, a very very shit father and Zeff (I know he loves Sanji but he still treated him pretty harshly).

Brook is one of his first ‘soft’ male influences, Franky too but Sanji wasn’t welcoming of him at first after what happened with Usopp.

The musician always treats him kindly and has become like the Grandfather he never had to him (not that Sanji would admit that willingly).

So it’s pretty obvious he would become protective of him but it was surprising when it started to include Brooks romantic partners.

Sanji still has his problems with older men especially very tall ones, they remind him to much of Judge.

The first time he noticed when Nekomamushi had asked him if Brook was single and he nearly Diable Jambed his ass to hell. (Cat Viper looks a lot like Judge with his hair so Sanji really didn’t want him close to Brook)

The next time was when Jinbei was getting close to Brook. (I thought it would be funny if Sanjis one sided beef was partially because of Brook 😂)

Why tall men keep falling for his grandpa is beyond him but he’s not happy about it.

One man he would trust with Brook is Pedro because they vibe pretty well together but he still threatens him if he ever hurts his gramps.

Hello and thank you!! That’s such a compliment! Yes I’ve seen their art, a friend of mine has shown me some of their stuff and recommended I refer to it for Brook’s proportions, which has been helpful. And I do recommend the people who like Brook to look at their work either to learn or simply to appreciate it.

I usually try to refer to the manga or any other official media where Brook and Yorki are shown, like the Treasure Cruise art, manga panels, merch, stuff like that. Those resources are usually my go-to’s for drawing them, but I don’t want to like.. emulate Oda’s style, I want to just really heavily depict it and then add stuff of my own, especially as I’ve been learning anatomy. I think O10matoP does something similar and that’s why it might’ve reminded you of their art.

I’ve always drawn Brook very close to canon so to me, it looks like a progression of skill or art style as I learn more about how to draw him and what I like. I don’t consider myself to have a real art style yet so to me it’s just experimenting. I see other people who also draw Brook that I have been inspired by and wanted to put elements of their work into my own art.

the.buggy.bee on IG (idk if they have an acc here) draws living Brook beautifully, I’d even go as far to say that it’s my favorite way his face is drawn. They really get it just right.

Another is f4_4mm also on IG, one of their scribbles of Brook was so pretty, I love that little scribble. It’s so simple but it really nails the shape of his body.

m0ckinghalcyons draws such a cute living Brook, I am always in awe over the way she draws bodies, and her rendering is so nice to look at.

badly-drawn-doflamingo (cricket.bones on IG)’s art in general is very pretty, I especially love vibrant colors. Looking at his art made me want to experiment more with them, be more bold since that’s the sort of thing I’m personally drawn to. Also his Yorki is so cuuute.

And jealousmingo on IG doesn’t draw Brook but like I said with combining Oda’s style and sort of adding to it, they do it so well and I learn a lot from them whenever I look at their stuff. I really want to be able to do what they can with Vegapunk/Kizaru but with Brook/Yorki.

Also your art too Sophie, I have looked at your stuff before and love your style!

I have a lot of Brook references, I have a folder dedicated to his fingers, so.. I really try to have a lot to pull from. I’ve also drawn realistic skulls and looked at bone structure. I’ve traced over manga panels to commit to muscle memory (though I don’t post that obviously). And for living Brook, something I do for practice is draw his face over screen caps of skeleton Brook so the features align. The past year has been me trying to improve at art for the sole purpose of drawing Brook better.

I have art from a while back too that I’d be happy to show!! Just to compare to the new stuff, since I don’t think I’ve posted any of it on tumblr.

Next one was when I was trying to draw his LA actor, Martial T. Batchamen back when the new season came out.

Then my living Brooks, first two are from November and my merbrook is from May.

And Yorki….

These are the only two decent Yorkis I’ve drawn.

The last Brook is a wip of my part for the Brook collab, so compare it to the upper right which was March, then the one on the left which was December. Like, it’s just been learning more and applying it to my Brooks. I can only hope to keep improving because I often feel dissatisfied.

But yeah that’s about it! I know you weren’t asking for all this, but it was a chance for me to go back and look at my stuff. I also just love to yap and share things. Hopefully other Brook fans will also check out the artists I mentioned too.

While brook's past as a solider has been revealed, it still never showed how he ended up with the Rumbar pirates which leads to my theory.

With Esperia now gone some of the remaining citizen, specifically Yorki decided to form a music themed pirate crew so that Esperia's legacy could live on with Brook being one of many to agree with this and his role as the captain of Esperia's battle convoy maybe even having had a part in him becoming the First Mate of the Rumbar Pirates.

But I also can't exactly explain what I mean by that

It's just that knowing that he was a stubborn little street urchin who was taken in by the nobility who tried to train him into a perfect gentleman makes so much sense based on his behaviour? It's the combination of his complete lack of manners while speaking so properly

And I do find it really cute that he's basically still imitating Candelle and that she was clearly such an idol for him

I wish we got more of her and I wish she didn't just get unceremoniously killed off, but I did really appreciate the little that we did get
