DMC5 was hella fun. But I can't help but feel it kinda ended on a nose dive. Don't wanna spoil it, but I could have probably written about 3 endings that were better than what we got. Seemed very rushed for so much buildup to it.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
So, the whole game has build up to taking down the demon king.
Then its revealed that V is actually a vessel of Vergil.
Then its revealed that the demon king is Vergil.
Then V merges with Vergilâs demon form to recreate Vergil.
From this point on - the story doesn't make sense. The tipping point
I get the whole V = Vergil - and I think its fine if a bit anime. But I also found Vergils devil form pretty ugly. That whole sequence where you are fighting giant devil vergil just felt like something out of power rangers. Why didnt he just look like corrupted Vergil? Or a less human version of Vergil?
Also theres a plothole with Dante knowing that Vergil attacked himself with Yamato to ascend - yet somehow did not knowing that V is Vergil (which is why he did it) but whatever.
Personally if it were up to me - I would have had the Demon King be a biomatter / parasite that infected Vergils body. And have V be his last effort to get Dante/Nero to defeat said parasite - for Vergil to be able to exist / have free will.
Then - I dunno. Maybe Vergil announces that while he help Nero/Dante to defeat the biomatter and regain his freewill - he also wanted to battle Nero/Dante, and wanted to get back to reality - free from the Demon world. Perhaps kind of acknowledgement that he helped the biomatter/demon king consume him. And then he faces off Nero at the end.
The idea that a character can say âStop hating each otherâ and boom - two characters change their ways - seems fucking stupid. Reminds me of really bad anime. Its also so quick and just kills the plot.
What was the point of the game if thatâs the ending? Thats what annoys me the most. In 1/2/3/4 - at least we stop someone. In V - our actions seem kinda meaningless as we haven't really stopped/defeated anyone but a barrage of subbosses.
I dunno. I was fine with the story (even power-rangersâ giant Vergil) right up until Nero grows back his arm and saves the day. It just felt really forced and contrived.
I also kinda liked how Nero become âjust a humanâ. As it makes Dante/Vergil more special and unique.
Ultimately - I enjoyed the gameplay - but I think the ending sucked and could have done with a re-write.
Im amazed they made Nero so fun to play as - and Dante is what he should have been in 4. His different modes have a much fuller moveset (closer to 3) rather than a few gimmicks.
I still donât really like V. Its a cool concept but its not deep. It feels quite spammy at the best of times.
