“Change is exhausting. I feel like there’s nowhere to hide from all the newness of everything. Except here. With you.”
clint had no idea what to say. words weren’t his thing at all, meanwhile she was saying these meaningful things and looking at him like that. that damn look. those green eyes, they burrowed through it all. he could try to write it off, to push the feelings away but those eyes always saw right through it. they made him sweat way more than he should. maybe that’s what he loved about her.
he opened his lips several times, multiple breaths to speak only to close once again, wordlessly the air was getting stale between them and it was like he could feel the disappointment. he didn’t know what else to try, he had to say something.
“ kiss me, ” he whispered, almost so quiet even he couldn’t hear it himself. it was a stupid thing to say, when had he ever asked for anything ? if he had more than this split second he’d be having a conversation with himself, the phrase ‘ barton, you dummy ’ would be bouncing around his head. but instead, he just slammed his lips against hers. it wasn’t a gentle kiss, it was a heavy one, grabbing her, holding her as close to himself as he could as if hoping that somehow him gripping her hard enough he was afraid to bruise her would mean something.
suddenly it hit him. usually feeling her stole his breath, made him breathless and wordless and suddenly the words came to him already. finally he parted, avoiding her gaze as he always did when he said something like this. he couldn’t ever look at her in case he sounded like an idiot.
“ you’re wrong. ” he knew he could expect some quick reaction from her, he should be acting fast but suddenly time stood still, almost taking an eternity to talk again in his mind. “ everything changes here. ”
“ this place used to just be a mess of endless stupid arrow shirts. there was nothing here before you. you changed everything here and if you feel like this is safe you’re only proving my point. everything changes, even this. even us. but change isn’t always bad. you changed this place from an apartment to a home. ”
Still reeling from his kiss, it was Jessica’s turn to be speechless. When the words began pouring from Clint’s mouth, a variety of emotions bubbled around in her chest, the feeling of electricity sparking throughout her venom-laced veins. And in an attempt to rein in her vulnerability, Jess blinked hard a few times to keep her tears at bay.
Her hand left his so she could cradle his face, and her fingertips gently rubbed his fresh stubble. It amazed her that Clint saw past her flaws. Though, when she thought on it further, he didn’t see past them -- Clint saw her for who she was, flaws and all, and accepted them. He cared for her every single part of her, and that realisation brought a soft smile to her lips.
Maybe he was right, this sort of change was something Jess could get used to.
It had been at least a minute minute now, and Jessica still didn’t have the words to express how she felt, so instead she brought Clint’s face to hers once more, giving him a quick, yet soft kiss, before pulling back only a little.
"Clint, this place is still a mess of endless, stupid arrow shirts, please don’t delude yourself.” Jessica’s own teasing statement caused her resolve to shatter, and her eyes grew wet as she gazed at her partner. When she offered him a sweet smile, a tear trickled out and onto her cheek, rolling and bouncing off her skin so quickly that she’d hardly noticed.
