✒️ ┋ It's hard to steal the wind from Jay's sails, but Jonah manages. His shoulders slacken, first slightly, then all at once, as if he's finally dropped a sack of bricks he's been lugging around for years, his hooded look of boredom rounding into something more sincere.

Does he want Rayn to like him? Surely he doesn't care. He doesn't care whether the masses appreciate him, so why should he give a damn whether she does? He realises, with some amount of discomfort, that the bratty detective he'd originally teamed up with for the good of the cause is no longer a part of the faceless crowds that're oh-so-easy to tune out. No, Rayn is Rayn. She has a name, and a face, and oh god he might actually care a little bit—

An eyebrow twitches with annoyed exasperation. For her. For HIMSELF, for allowing such tomfoolery to unfold inside a mind that, by all accounts, is too well-trained against vying for approval. This kind of hunger is beneath him. It has to be. He'd read books on the art of not striving to be liked, for crying out loud!

❝ She told you that? ❞ And for fuck's sake, he sounds much too interested. Jay forces himself to sit back in his seat, attempting to enact even a hint of the indifference he wishes he felt. ❝ Or was that a platitude? ❞

It becomes painfully apparent that Jonah is uninitiated in the realm of social theater the two of them seem to enjoy. The push and pull dynamic of being two sides of the same coin, the game of seeing who can show that the care the least while caring the most. That quiet language spoken by individuals who want to do more than they say, but still be understood without the words.

He's never understood it.

Gabby says he's better for not knowing, too.

"Nah. She's never been one to outright say the things she feels. But I just know, you know? Comes with the territory of having known her for... basically my entire life."

In that way, he understood himself to be privileged. He got to see the sides of her very few did, and learn all the little quirks and habits she had. The way she snorted through her nose when she felt genuinely annoyed - something she only rarely did with Jay; the way she absentmindedly tuned into broadcasts he was featured on and let them run in the background as ambient noise while she worked; the way she talked to her birds when she was worried and seemed just that slightest bit more relieved hearing that he was still okay.

"I can tell she likes you." He goes on, carefully arranging the trio of little clay models he's finished painting: some little hares with wings. "Not hard to see why. You two seem like you have a lot in common."
