As we know, adverbs can be very good when used right, and very bad when excessive or substituted for stronger verbs. (If you want to learn more about that there’s lots of articles floating around ^^)

But sometimes it doesn’t matter how much we know, we still make mistakes. 

I’ve spent nearly two hours this week cleaning adverbs out of Pearl. Many of the ones I removed were absolutely useless things, like clinging tightly (what other type of clinging is there, Bryn?), and describing the state of something the context of the scene already more than implied, and about fifty incidents of slowly when the reader’s interpretation of the scene would not change at all should the action be done quickly instead. But the kicker here is that I’ve line edited this manuscript three times already, and I didn’t notice any of these until I stopped to focus on adverbs specifically.

So, I encourage you to find-all your -ly words at some point during your editing stage. You don’t need some lofty goal about how many you’ll delete — you don’t have to take out any at all — but it’s always a good idea to look a little deeper at the words you’re writing and decide what they’re doing for the reader.
