The Shock factor!
This weekend saw, among other things, the finale of one of the most popular series, and in may case, the opportunity to watch one of theatre’s most expected plays: 1984.
All of this made me realize how much does “shock” is carefully placed in the media in order to create an action-reaction from its audience, even at the expense of losing them altogether.
Whoever has attempted to write anything with the hope of other people reading it, should know, that regardless of how good your story is, it needs to lay close to the expectations of the audience. It may cause shock, repeatedly. However, it may sacrifice that the audience may, in some occasions become upset or disappointed, because after all, they have invested time and effort to understand and get to know characters and plot, and the disregard for this could be a major error for any writer, producer or creator.
I have become aware of how much more difficult it is, as a member of the audience, to shock me. Mainly because the media keeps constantly pushing the boundaries to impress or unimpress its viewers, and it has become so obvious, so blatant, that you don’t even feel respected as an audience anymore.
It has reached a point where it is not art anymore, but an attempt, empty at times, to fabricate an element of surprise.
Some of the audience at the play left the scene as their boundaries had been pushed too far. However, it did not seem, in my view that this shock element had drawn to far away from the plot and that it contributed to a single message that the play was trying to convey.
However, in the case of television series, production companies have such free reign in the artistic development of stories that it appears as if they continued on this path of shocking the audiences until the inevitable happened, their boundaries have been pushed too far to even fit within a continuous plot, and they left

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (via literaturesluts)
One of my all time favourite books. Growing up in Latin America, I was never familiarised with the usual English Literature books taught as part of the curriculum in High Schools in the United States and the United Kingdom, so coming across this books and finding it such a pleasant surprise to enjoy it so thoroughly has been a great adventure. This books makes you grow in so many ways... It is really incredible that someone (a woman may I say) came up with this in the 1960s.

HAPPY SOLSTICE!
On June 21—the longest day of the year—the sun is at its highest point in the sky.
The Earth’s tilt is to thank for this demarcation of seasons: Summer solstice occurs when the North Pole is tilted directly toward the sun. (The Southern Hemisphere experiences its summer solstice in December, when the South Pole is directly tilted toward the sun.)
