PET –Lamp Ethiopia is the third collection the studio launches, ever since started his first collection in 2012 in Colombia. His project has been awarded various international prizes. Nowadays, Alvaro and his team combines his work with various companies and the self-production of some of his designs. The Variopinte head office is in Barcelona, a city chosen by the associates of the brand, originally from the south of France. Two years ago, the showroom was opened to the public in the Born district. Based in one of the old warehouses which surrounded the old Born food market, where you can see its collection as well as a carefully picked selection of other products. Such as the kitchen knives with a wooden handle from boxwood de Pallares, a craftsman from Solsona. Or the classic glass cup named “americano”, from 1948 (included in the MOMA collection from New York) used on a daily basis in Brazil. Its spirit and philosophy is to support and position itself with designs, products and artists who bring cultural content to a design. The current exhibition is opened to public till november 21st. Álvaro Catalán de Ocón belongs to a generation of young designers aware of productive saturation of our society, whilst also being full of deficits. He puts the focus in giving new uses, completing and attaching new meanings to the objects that serve us. His actions have an unmistakable stamp of ecological awareness. At the same time, he re-evaluates traditional knowledge from very diverse places and countries, whose artisans are found outside of the international trade circuit. He gets them fully involved with his projects. Stefania di Petrillo brings together traditions, nature and modernity in her work. In the Variopinte tableware collection she stresses the basic daily usefulness: independent pieces but carefully combinable and with a precise fit, unbreakable and also occupy minimal storage space. With the prominence of colour, the collection in enamelled metal is destined for daily tableware both at home and in the hospitality sector. At the same time, it has been welcomed as a more environmentally friendly and up-to-date alternative to the plastic picnic sets. The exhibition is opened to public till november 21st. Some pictures of the great exhibition holding actually in our Showroom. Variopinte welcomes Petlamp untill november 21st. New collection 2015 ABYSSINIA 2015. Álvaro Catalán de Ocón makes progress with his exceptional project of creating a set of unique lamps, mixing two concepts: ecology and local craftsmanship. The designer promotes the salvage of plastic bottles, prior to being converted into waste, and recycles them as lamp heads. The lampshades are handmade by local collectives from different parts of the world, who contribute their craftsmanship expertise and own techniques. It is no coincidence that Variopinte is hosting this artist. There have been several meeting points between Alvaro Catalan de Ocón and designer Stefania di Petrillo, creator of the Variopinte collections. They have both developed, out of their own concerns, projects and collections influenced by motivations which are both very personal as well as universal. Their ways of working implies a form of knowledge of the world, the near but also the unexpected and distant. Clarity and simplicity are factors shared in both their designs.
