i was just talking to my friend last night about how dark and colorless the live action is probably gonna be ((who’s surprised) ALSO DID YOU SEE THEY’RE USING FUCKING BLUE FLAGS IN CORONA??? WALTER WHITE WHY ARE YOU BLUE CLIP HERE))
Anyways one detail i really like and was bringing up is the lighting in rapunzel’s tower….. and im in the “insane about this movie” building im sure people have noticed this before i just like talking abt it so i wanted to. because i think Everyone notices that the tower becomes darker and grittier after rapunzel leaves, because its a VERY significant shift, but the lighting actually Always shifts based on who’s in the tower with her, its just more subtle at first.
from the start of the movie the lighting in the tower shifts in a way that displays to you how comfortable rapunzel feels there, and when it most feels like home. its brightest when rapunzel and pascal are alone, and darkest when gothel is there. gothel is basically always in low light or shadow!!!

(after she knocks eugene out. the light is more focused but its overall still pretty bright)
(gothel enters, the tower is IMMEDIATELY shrouded in shadow again.)
and i really like especially how despite eugene being a complete stranger, someone rapunzel was taught to fear, once she knocks him over the head she feels confident and safer, so the scene brightens up again. its still brighter when he’s there compared to when gothel is, she feels safer with a stranger she knows she can overpower than her own “mother”

I also wanna shout out @elfand0m for sharing and exploring this idea with me as LO Varian's outfit (that Eugene commissioned/tailored just for him to wear) when he had his own ceremonial "debut" being officiated as a member of the royal family as "the jewel of the dark kingdom". (he couldn't wait for the whole thing to be over the whole time but thank god his best friend was there to keep him company at least) It was a really cute and fun idea and I absolutely loved it to bits
so thank you to these lovelies for indulging on this au with me!!
Instead of Quirin giving Varian his mother's journal, Varian took it by himself when his dad was in the amber.
The journal details Varian's mother's adventures in alchemy and speaks of something known as the "Seven Trials" of the Seven Kingdoms
Instead of Varian takes the journal to Xavier, who explains the legend. Varian read it himself due to the fact that he was being chased by masked guards.
Varian decides to leave Corona and complete the Seven Challenges, since his mother died before she was able to. He feels if he completes his mother's work, he may understand her and himself a little better and find purpose, or people who think more like him.
Rather than Varian saying goodbye to his own friends and his father, who gifts him a travel donkey named Prometheus. In Post-Secret of the Sundrop, Varian escaped with a cloak from the dungeons of Corona and then Kingdom altogether. Leaving his past behind, and not coming back.
He met Yong, at 14 when Yong was just about 8 years old. And Yong's parents adopted Varian knowing that he has no parents and that his own father had died in the amber, not knowing he is a fugitive in his own kingdom.
Like some parts of the Vat7k plot, Varian met Hugo albeit Hugo has a wanted poster of Varian, as the kingdom and even outside Corona plastered posters of Varian, trying to look for him in hopes of him being arrested and executed. Hugo, being a thief knew that he shouldn't mess with a vengeful scientist, a alchemist that kidnapped the queen and committed treason and had some conspiracy around the kingdom.
Rapunzel meanwhile pretended to live her life, even after what just happened, she still tries to avoid mentioning this out of trauma. Quirin was freed, but long since dead, making a grave where they wrote he was a beloved village leader only, due to the taboo mention of Varian.
Donella gave Hugo instructions on how to steal the totems, by pretending to go along with the adventure, as Varian acts like nothing happened and goes on with his day not knowing that the kingdom has started to knock on the doors of people inspecting of a wanted poster of the alchemist.
When they arrived to the Air Kingdom, they met Nuru and she noticed Varian looking familiar to the wanted poster pictured. While not quite looking like it, because his long black hair that looked even more messier than his original hair, with a lack of teal streak due losing it in the Fire Kingdom, an eyepatch with a half burned face. Wearing a tattered cloak, bandages on his leg and an alchemy staff and backpack. (Don't mind the clothes tho, as they are based on his Vat7k appearance)
Nuru tells them that her kingdom is dying soon and that the kingdom's resources got stolen by thieves.
Yong felt bad for her kingdom as he said his own kingdom, many people had died from fire overdose.
Varian on the other hand, shut his mouth and didn't say anything. As Hugo did the same, but Hugo's fear continue to grow from seeing Varian not be sympathetic over someone's situation.
As their adventure continued, more questions get unanswered as Varian acts like nothing happened and behaves very codly to Hugo.
While in the tents, Varian went outside to catch air and spent time with his new friends. Potentially having a conversation with them, but Hugo pretends to act cocky to mask his fear.
At the Eternal Library, Varian gets posssesed by Ulla after the group found Hugo was a secret agent sent by Donella. Yong and Nuru petrified, protected each other.
When the group saved him and defeated Ulla, Hugo apologized as Varian's cold expression made Hugo shiver.
Opinion that's gonna get me a lot of hate and I know it....

i genuinely, sincerely adore the wide scope of possible themes the “tangled: the series” fans can create with. there are so many different genres.
if you favor more lighthearted interpretations of canon, well, this is the franchise where:
-the king very seriously steals a pet seal
-rapunzel’s chameleon becomes a dragon for some reason
-the princess leads a singalong with the worst of the worst
-sapient animal sidekicks exist
-shenanigans generally abound
you can write about the characters gallivanting to and fro for the silliest of reasons. you can have them solve mysteries with the zaniest of suspects. the world is your oyster.
even aside from creation, you should feel free to have your own version of events! you can reject any shocking implications the writers might have accidentally hinted at, simply because they don’t fit what the show means to you.
a show, once put out into the world, is left for the fans to do with it what they will. lighthearted-interpretation-havers are valid.
on the other hand, this is the franchise where:
-eugene fitzherbert desperately tries to crawl toward his chained-up love while bleeding out
-cassandra’s hand rots on-screen
-a child loses his morality in a desperate scramble to pin the blame for his father’s death on the princess
-rapunzel’s parents repeat the same behaviors as the abusive kidnapper she just escaped from
-impenetrable rocks shoot up quickly enough to impale somebody in their sleep
those with darker interpretations are drawing from the canon just as much as those who view it as a generally fun show. yes, good prevails over evil (ish) and our heroes win the day (depending on your views of how the finale served each character), and it overall has a cheerful atmosphere, but it’s still worthwhile to explore how our cast would be affected by the plot!
nobody needs to argue, because nobody is wrong.
the people who want frederic and arianna to resemble their movie counterparts are welcome to have at it. the people who find the show’s parental conflict intriguing are welcome to dive into that.
the people who say “the guards are just background characters— they wouldn’t directly hold a grudge or misuse their power against varian during his stay in prison! just look at stan and pete!” are not wrong. neither are the people who bring up the prison chase scene in “tangled”, or point out that “it’s not unrealistic to assume they’d hold a grudge against the kid with the monster that nearly killed them”.
(my interpretation is somewhere between those two options. i think some guards were apathetic or misguided, while some were particularly cruel. they are the medieval police.)
i hope this doesn’t come across as vagueposting or condescending. i just find myself saddened when i see people from differing camps trying to drag one another into their opposing sides.
just visit! mingle! spend some time with the lighthearted-interpretation-havers, or people who tend to create more fluffy content, and then (depending on if you’re in the mood for it/want to see it at all) venture over to the implication-expanding, angsty side.
we all care about this story, and, if we care in different ways, that just means that the fanworks are beautifully varied.

Fear makes people stupid. At it's core it comes down to homophobia. Though I do wonder why they try to spread info so easily debunked, cuz like... if you do any research at all, it becomes clearer and clearer how good the two are for one another, psychologically.
