Iâll be completely honest, I really struggle with fics that have Varian train to use a sword as his main form of combat and not just basic self defense. I get itâs to make him more capable in combat, but I think itâs better if he doesnât. No shade if youâre writing him that way, you do you, but I have some feelings about it and really want to talk about it.
I donât like the idea of Varian knowing how to use a sword well because of the way he isnât really a fighter unless he needs to be. We only see him weaponize alchemy during his villain arc, with the Saporians, and the finale. He only fought when he was literally the bad guy and felt he had no other choice, was with people who more than likely had him making alchemy for combat (notice that those compounds he uses as a Saporian are never used again), and when he was fighting to reclaim his home. Varian never even wears the alchemy belt after his time with the Saporians even when he is knowingly marching into battle. His only attack on Zhan Tiri was using a beaker as a freaking bottle rocket!
Even if heâs being pushed into combat, I do prefer if heâs a pure alchemy user because it makes more sense than a sword even if heâs trained considering most people who write the sword training forget Varian is hemophobic. If he gets a cut on someone, he might pass out and then we have an unconscious alchemist on our hands. I mean, I still think he made his automaton have a red glass panel so itâs harder to distinguish whatâs blood and what isnât, but I canât imagine people who faint at the sight of blood want to use a sword on someone.
Also, most of the main cast can use swords. Varian being a pure alchemy user makes him stand out in that sense. Cass, Eugene, and Lanceâs main weapons are swords, Rapunzel uses her hair, and it is a lot more interesting if Varian is also a ranged fighter, but heâs a lot more limited because he has a limited amount of alchemy. Writing around that is much more interesting when you consider how many solutions he has and how little he can hold.
Lastly, and I think this is just me being overly obsessed, but I feel like it kind of cheapens his relationship with his dad in the finale. Quirinâs arc, as unexplored as it is, felt like it was about accepting his son and being proud of him for who he is. Varian and Quirin are opposites in so many ways and it often felt like Quirinâs major block in being there for Varian was the fact Varian was so different from Quirin and wasnât an ideal son. Varian canât stand the sight of blood, he doesnât seem to be physically very strong, and heâs not a fighter. Quirin was a knight who used a sword and is built like a tank. Varian learning to use a sword feels like him becoming someone he isnât and more like the ideal son Quirin wanted, which doesnât feel right to me when the final battle of the series has Quirin proud to march into battle with his son who isnât there to fight, but build what they believed was the key to banishing the demon who stole their home.
Again, no shade if you have sword training for him. If youâre writing that, itâs perfectly fine. It just feels extremely unnatural for the hemophobic alchemist who always stays in the back during a fight to be wielding a sword.
