A wonderfully progressive year this year for Christmas adverts in Great Britain 😊

Every single major shopping brand, from Tesco to M&S to Lidl had a beautiful multi-racial family and/or mixed couple in their advertisements.

This is a wonderful reflection of vibrant present day(and undoubtedly future) Britain.

Television advertisements are especially  beneficial when showing multi-ethnic relationships or even better, families, as It helps to de-stigmatize the concept of interracial relationships in wider society.

This is very validating for those already in interracial relationships and perhaps would even encouraging those who are not but perhaps are curious, to try. 

This is beneficial to our liberal-democracy as a whole as those who have been or are in mixed-race relationships have been shown to be far more open minded and to have significantly higher levels of empathy and compassion for people of color and refugees than those who have not.

And in this horrific time, when many refugees need a home  due to Western neo-colonialist expansion in foreign lands, it may encourage those to be more empathetic and compassionate and to do the right thing, reject the racist fear-mongering, open the borders and let them all in. 

In summary, the benefits of on-screen diversity are difficult to overstate.

Not only does it increase levels of empathy that Whites have for people of color both at home and abroad, but also from the perspective of people of color, seeing someone who looks like you on screen is incredibly validating and reaffirming of the fact that they belong here in our new multicultural shared society, while also letting racists and bigots know, that they don’t. 😊
