It’s very fashionable for dominant thinkers and economists to denounce any movement that seeks an alternative to the modern world. Wrapped under the twin peaks of “liberal globalism,” they view anything else as “obsolete,” “outdated,” or just “racist.” Easily, they act much like Pangloss from Voltaire’s “Candide” in praising this, “the best of all possible worlds.” Of course its easy for them to proclaim, they need to lecture.

Recently I had the good fortune to find Allan Carlson’s work, “Third Ways” in a local used bookshop. While still reading through it, Carlson does effectively outline attempts to break the hegemony of Capitalism and Marxism.

He touches on familiar topics to some in reactionary and Dissident Right circles in recent years. Distributism and its famous thinkers in G.K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc. Similarly, he discusses the popular agrarian movements of post-World War I Eastern Europe and the early Soviet Union.

Among his citations are the economist Alexander Chayanov, who correctly predicted the failure of collectivization of farmland before Stalin. Chayanov, who believed the Russian farmer didn’t follow normal economic law, saw a localist landscape of private and cooperative ownership as superior to state centralization and planning. The short-lived agrarian government of Bulgaria of the 1920′s is seen as distinct in a changing post-war landscape.

Even Swedish Socialist housewives are viewed as unique actors from the dominant political trends. Until the mid-20th century, many on the Swedish left viewed both the family unit, and the role of housewife, as a strong ideal. Some like Ellen Key viewed the housewife in Nietzschean terms. In her eyes, women and men in parenthood were crossing “the bridge of men of today to the superman.” The changes to Swedish society, favoring a female labor force in the late 60′s and early 70′s, create the state-induced nightmare of today. The role of the housewife as the raiser of children reduced to the inferiority of the state’s job.

While Carlson is speaking from a Traditional Conservative standpoint, his take is unique for an American Rightist. What passes for “Conservatism” in the West would be regarded as heresy centuries before resulting in a weak “alternative” to the dominant trends. Which of course creates the genesis of something new.

People are seeking more than the current trends of Capitalism and Marxism once again. We see individuals looking at Distrbiutism, Nationalism, Justicalism, and monarchy with favorable eyes again. It’s fashionable to dismiss these trends as “reactionary” or “obsolete” thinking. Or is it that man can only be compartmentalized and reduced so much, before he begins to look for something greater?

For most, trapped in rationalist mindsets, they will see that as stupid, for the rest, there is something familiar, but new.
