NATIONS DURING WW2
I tried to show as much humanity as possible. Everyone loses in war.
EXPLANATION OF EACH COMIC β¬οΈ (warning: long)
Germany and Prussia Many were wary of the Nazi regime from the beginning, but many were also initially very supportive; Hitler offered Germany a way out of economic depression, gain international prestige, and revenge for the Treaty of Versailles. I headcanon that Ludwig and Gilbert, who are fundamentally German nationalists, also believed in Hitler's cause and ignored the warnings at first. However, as violence against Jews escalated from 1935 and the true colours of Nazism revealed itself, they grew disillusioned.
I'm inclined to think Gilbert recognized this earlier and is more actively against the regime - compared to Ludwig, he's had much more experience with dictatorships, war, and the consequences of bad leaders.
As for Ludwig, I headcanon he's torn between supporting the regime because of how despite everything, Nazism did take Germany out of poverty and ruin. However, he is uncomfortable by their ideologies and worries for Gilbert; he has albinism, and the Nazis began a program called "T4" in 1939 where they killed "tainted" Germans to ensure the race was "pure": this included physical disabilities and deformaties and mental disabilities. Gilbert's albinism would have set a target on his back.
This drawing takes place between 1935 - 1939. Right before Germany declares war and the brothers get deployed.
America and Canada Alfred is canonically a fighter pilot during WW2. The USA Air Force fought both in Europe against Germany/Italy, and in the Pacific Ocean/Asia against Japan. Around 18% of the USA Air Force died, meaning Alfred has a 1/5 chance of death. Of course, as a nation, he won't die, but he'll likely suffer a lot - burns, dismemberment, drowning, ect.
I headcanon that initially, Alfred didn't chose to be a pilot specifically; he was part of the USA military, but didn't specialize until around 1943 just because he also needed for administration and political duties in America. However, in 1943, he couldn't let his people go into war while he stayed safe back home, so he chose to be a pilot.
This drawing takes place in 1943. When Alfred tells Matthew he is going to fight.
Matthew is freaking out because Canada joined WW2 in 1939, while America joined in 1942. Matthew's people are already fighting, and he knows how brutal WW2 warfare is; he wants to spare Alfred of that fate, even if the USA is going to war. However, unlike Alfred, I headcanon that Matthew doesn't often fight oversees; he stays home and takes care of politics + domestic concerns. This is because I think Matthew can be a bit avoidant sometimes - he was much more involved during WW1, but now wants to stay back. Matthew is frightened and wary, afraid to get hurt. Of course he still fights, but also spends time home, and wants Alfred to do the same. Alfred, who is less avoidant, cannot.
China and Korea While Nazi Germany was conquering Europe, Japan was determined to conquer Asia. They invaded and annexed Korea in 1910. They invaded Chinese territory in 1931, and began a full-scale invasion of China in 1937. Japan was infamously brutal to their occupied territories. Similarly to Nazism, Japanese ideology viewed the Japanese as superior to other nations, and thus treated Korea/China horrendously.
This drawing takes place in 1937. During the Japanese invasion of Nanjing/Nanking, Japanese soldiers slaughtered around 300,000 Chinese civilians (women/childen/babies included), as well as tortured and raped. This incident is called the Nanjing Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking.
Wang Yao is obviously devastated and numb. He's being comforted by Yong Soo, who is also held captive by Kiku. While none of them like each other, in Wang Yao's moment of pain and weakness that Yong Soo has been battling since 1910, Yong Soo is compelled to comfort Wang Yao however he can.
Japan Like I mentioned, Japanese ideology valued Japan as above everyone else. Furthermore, they were also extremely loyal and fanatic towards the Japanese Emperor Hirihito; Hirihito was literally viewed as a divine god. There was also a social value of honour that was so powerful, Japanese soldiers and civilians would sacrifice themselves readily during battle - all for their nation. If they committed suicide rather than surrendering as well.
Basically, many Japanese people were heavily indoctrinated and racist to the point that their life was no longer as important as the empire.
This drawing takes place around 1942 to 1945. This is when Japan was at war with the USA and began dying for their country often.
Kiku no longer recognizes himself. I headcanon that like Ludwig and Gilbert, he was extremely supportive of Hirihito and Imperial Japan. However, he was much more indoctrinated rather than supportive, and 100% internalized and adopted Imperial Japan's doctrines. Yet, this began changing when Kiku realized his people were literally dying due to a misguided belief that their country was more important than their individual lives.
This is also when Kiku realizes he is loyal to Japan - not the government or military, but to the Japanese people, and right now, his people are reaping the consequences of their mindset and country's leaders. Kiku is trying to self-reflect (he is literally looking into a mirror), but he cannot recognize what monster he has become, and what actions his country has committed against other nations and their own people.
England
Bombing warfare was a huge part of WW2. However, its effectiveness is actually debated often. Obviously, the atomic bombs were significant, but the other bombing prior to that had limited impacts. Even more controversial was bombing citizens. This often had even less concrete impacts, and was often either to demonstrate power or demoralize the opponent.
Despite this, particularly between Britain and Germany, bombing warfare was rampant. It began with Germany's bombing of London for a few months straight. This was called the Blitz, which killed around 40,000 to 50,000 British citizens. Britain retaliated by bombing German cities too.
Sometimes, bombing cities had strategic impact (for example, they contained military bases), but in many cases of Allied bombing, their targeted German cities had little strategic importance. The bombing of German cities Hamburg and Dresden was specifically very controversial for the tens of thousands of civilian deaths and little strategic gain. Overall, there was an estimated 400,000 to 750,000 Germans citizen deaths from Allied bombing, while around 40,000 to 50,000 (roughly; I am not sure of the actual number) Allied citizens died from German bombing, mostly from the Blitz in 1940.
This drawing takes place 1943, when Germany had more or less stopped bombing Allied cities, while the Allies were beginning to bomb German cities more.
Arthur isn't thinking logically. Firstly, he is the last western European nation that has not been conquered by Nazi Germany, and thus the last hope for defeating them; if Britain falls, it doesn't matter if USA or Canada or Australia comes over to help; they no longer have land in Europe to set up their operations in. Arthur is under so much stress due to this. Secondly, his people are desperate and dying because of Germany. Arthur is mourning his people while growing steadily more vengeful, wanting to retaliate against Germany. Thus, he is thinking emotionally; in the heat of the moment, he doesn't care if his targets are citizens or soldiers or Nazis. If they are German, then he wants to end them.
