World Theater Day 2023 Hello friends, Today is a special day for me and for many of my friends - Theater Day 2023. This day this year I personally feel in a new way. I have never been so worried about all of us. As it was said a long time ago - when the guns speak, the muses are silent. My “2023 new year resolution” is to complete all major fiction works by Vladimir Nabokov. That was due long time ago but better late then never - so here we go. This will be (preferably and hopefully) done in chronological order. I have started and finished two of his earliest works so far: • 1926) Mashen'ka (Машенька); English translation: Mary (1970) • (1928) Korol', dama, valet (Король, дама, валет); English translation: King, Queen, Knave (1968) The first book is a romantic memoir of russian emigrant meeting abroad the first love of his life and reflecting on his past and present emotions. The one main thought of this book that VN underlines in the very end imho: You can not go back in time to your old self. Moments of our past are not good material for building our present. Those moments, people, emotions that we had are gone forever and “sicklied over, with a pale cast of” Time. The first of VN works that is set in Germany but originally still written in Russian language. This one deals with ideas of irony, of fate, justice and love. I found it to be slightly too long for the premise imho and, as a consequence not as solid. Still would recommend though - it is a good example of the VN writing style slowly blooming in to the “perfect flower of thought” we could observe in his later works. The Last Judgment (Italian: Il Giudizio Universale) is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo covering the whole altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The dead rise and descend to their fates, as judged by Christ who is surrounded by prominent saints. Altogether there are over 300 figures, with nearly all the males and angels originally shown as nudes; many were later partly covered up by painted draperies, of which some remain after recent cleaning and restoration. On a preview visit with Paul III, before the work was complete, the pope's Master of Ceremonies Biagio da Cesena is reported by Vasari as saying that: "it was most disgraceful that in so sacred a place there should have been depicted all those nude figures, exposing themselves so shamefully, and that it was no work for a papal chapel but rather for the public baths and taverns". Adam and Eve - The Temptation and the Expulsion The panel depicting the “Temptation” and the two characters’ subsequent expulsion from the Garden of Eden, is a notable departure from presiding thoughts in Italy at the time over what type of fruit was the forbidden one. In the Vulgate, the Catholic Church’s official Latin translation of the Bible during the 16th century, the Tree of Knowledge is widely read as bearing apples. In Michelangelo’s fresco, the tree bears figs—a more Judaic interpretation of the text. (It should be noted that Genesis describes Adam and Eve as covering themselves with fig leaves upon their new awareness of nudity, so figs were definitely part of the action in some way.) Interestingly, figs would come up again in Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel, just at a lesser altitude. The Libyan Sibyl, named Phemonoe, was the prophetic priestess presiding over the Oracle of Zeus-Ammon (Zeus represented with the Horns of Ammon) at Siwa Oasis in the Libyan Desert. I am by birth half mortal, half divine; An immortal nymph was my mother, my father an eater of grain; On my mother's side of Idaean birth, but my fatherland was red Marpessus, sacred to the Mother, and the river Aidoneus. (Pausanias 10.12.3) Serapion, in his epic verses, says that the Sibyl, even when dead ceased not from divination. And he writes that, what proceeded from her into the air after her death, was what gave oracular utterances in voices and omens; and on her body being changed into earth, and the grass as natural growing out of it, whatever beasts happening to be in that place fed on it exhibited to men an accurate knowledge of futurity by their entrails. Daniel (Aramaic and Hebrew: דָּנִיֵּאל – Dānīyyēʾl,[a] meaning "God is my Judge"; Greek: Δανιήλ Daniḗl), the hero of the biblical Book of Daniel, is a noble Jewish youth of Jerusalem taken into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, serving the king and his successors with loyalty and ability until the time of the Persian conqueror Cyrus, all the while remaining true to the God of Israel. The Cumaean Sibyl was the priestess presiding over the Apollonian oracle at Cumae, a Greek colony located near Naples, Italy. The word sibyl comes (via Latin) from the ancient Greek word sibylla, meaning prophetess. There were many sibyls in different locations throughout the ancient world. Isaiah The Prophet is calmly accepting the Good News. The Sistine Chapel, ceiling fresco. In February 2018, archaeologist Eilat Mazar announced that she and her team had discovered a small seal impression which reads "[belonging] to Isaiah nvy" (could be reconstructed and read as "[belonging] to Isaiah the prophet") during the Ophel excavations, just south of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The tiny bulla was found "only 10 feet away" from where an intact bulla bearing the inscription "[belonging] to King Hezekiah of Judah" was discovered in 2015 by the same team.
