There was a fair bit of shock in Niran's eyes when Pete said that he didn't have to defeat Qi Rong, he didn't even have to be Wu if he didn't want to. Pete just wanted him to come back and not leave him. If Niran didn't want to be Wu, then Pete didn't want that for him either.
Its like it was the first time Niran was realizing Pete didn't just care about him because of that part of him, that Pete saw his worth outside of the power. Sure, Pete thought the Wu thing was cool, and yeah, that's what brought them together in the first place, but, perhaps unlike anyone else in his life, to Pete, Niran is everything that makes him up, and if Niran decides he doesn't want Wu to be a part of that, then that's fine, Pete care about the rest of him all the same.
Even if it weren't for the soulbond, no one else but Pete could have brought him back, because to most everyone else, Niran being Wu is the most important thing. But to Pete, Niran being happy is the most important thing.
