now that I've got a paradise on the way, I'd like to make a little review of the uni and pix while I wait!
I've seen a lot of people say the uni doesn't have a lot to do, and I am kind of inclined to agree. do not let this scare you off, however!!! because I feel like the essence of tamagotchi is that its rewarding to take care of something every day, little by little. it rewards you for taking things slow and steady. which is very good!!!! we live in an age where everything has to be fast and end so soon, which makes me value my virtual pets and slow games like animal crossing all the more! because they teach you to enjoy slowly building progress. sitting down every day to check in on my tamagotchis, and my animal crossing island, is a moment of peace that's slow as molasses. it really helps me relax.
the uni has quite a lot of content for you to explore, from the sticker function allowing you to meet npc tamas to befriend, or the daily rotation of fun items at the mall, to the tamaverse where you can see other people's characters. and the dlcs!!! they add a lot of new stuff, and there's quite a few of them. keep in mind, due to software limitations, you can only play one dlc at a time.
nonetheless, 40 days into my current run, I don't make much use of any of the above anymore. I use the sticker search whilst I'm outside, usually if I'm in a car or on public transport, because I got all the hearts for every npc available from my home area.
I feel like the uni doesn't particularly encourage you to cycle through tamas, though an adult will ask to leave every few days. but its a short interaction that quickly became background noise, I just say no every time he asks. otherwise nothing encourages me to move on to a new tama. and as such, I haven't explored other base characters or dlc characters. I've stuck with kikitchi. I think most people stick with one tama for a long time, so dlcs adding new possible characters isn't all that exciting. you do, however, get new items and furniture/rooms.
after a while you don't find anything new at the mall either. but this isn't to say you shouldn't consider the uni!
I find the daily caregiving aspect to be a tiny bit lacking, since you can go to the tamaverse to bring happiness significantly up, which is convenient because it depletes rather quickly. you can't interact with your tama as much as with the pix, but I do feel a sense of bonding with kikitchi.
so, why do I like the uni?
its very small and portable. very easy to carry around on a lanyard, not bulky whatsoever.
you can take walks with your tama, which is very cute to me. if I go on a walk outside, he can quite literally join me. and you get ingredients and diys.
its also very convenient and easily maintainable. I only check in on him like, 5 times a day at most? and it takes like a minute to bring him to full stats. it feels like I still get a lot of interaction out of the uni every day, and I enjoy that it doesn't feel like a chore to take care of it. kind of in the same way I don't feel like its a chore to feed my cat!
I think the uni is a good choice if you need something not super demanding, that rewards you for patience and is highly customisable. not to mention, very easy to carry! you might consider getting a screen protector though, the screen gets scratched easily.
very portable design, to put it that way lol
wifi connectivity, which allows for online splatoon-esque events with teams, for which you play minigames
the dlc minigames are varied and interesting imo
can install updates and receive items over wifi
sticker search feature, allows you to befriend npcs and get collectible stickers
charges via usb c ( I know a lot of people dislike this because it decreases longevity of the device but I find it a lot more convenient )
responsive buttons ( will be relevant in a bit )
I like that they can have favourite items
I love the care icons. feels like achievements lol
loud as fuck. even on the lowest sound setting it makes very strident noises
not a lot to do unless you cycle through tamas regularly
even then does not provide a lot of daily activities
I don't like the base characters at all tbh
nor a lot of dlc characters
not much to do in regards to bonding with your tama
your tama asks to leave every 4-7 days
not many options when it comes to food, as in you can order and that's pretty much it
unless you switch dlcs it feels like there's not that many items
some features feel sort of useless. like placing furniture in your garden to attract pets
ok to start off. I think I have a preference for the pix. not to say its a perfect device, not even close, but I find it more charming and fun, imperfect as it is.
I love that minigames rotate every day. not that there's a lot of them.
I don't enjoy how short the minigames are, also. they're fun and varied enough but they last for SO little lmao
the camera feature is pretty nifty! I don't really make use of it anymore because it DOES drain batteries faster. but you can get any item or food, meet any tama for a playdate, etc. by scanning qr codes. you can also take pictures of anything your little heart desires, though the camera quality is genuinely abysmal and its just. so incredibly dark
you have more options for food such as going to a restaurant or cooking yourself! cooking requires you to take pictures of colors, that are then combined into food. though because the camera is so dark it only really picks up black or grey, unless you take pictures of a phone screen for example.
you can pet your tama!!!!!!!!
this brings me to the buttons. they aren't actual buttons, they're more of a touchscreen type thing? touch-sensitive? idk
they're a bit finicky but I have a big thumb so they genuinely don't bother me whatsoever, I just hold my tama like its a phone and interact with the buttons like they're the screen of said phone. and I haven't had any issues with the responsiveness whatsoever
but that might not be doable if you have small hands, the tamagotchi pix is quite bulky. same-ish size as the paradise, I believe?
I like the bulkiness, makes it nice and heavy in my hand, but its not very fun to go outside with it. I keep it in my pocket or bag and only interact with it if necessary.
I like that its quieter, and has very soft sounds.
I enjoy that besides the minigame rotation, you can go outside to water trees, and there's a hobby room as well.
also, if you reach best friends status with your tama, you can keep it forever and it doesn't ask to leave after the first time.
there's no marriage, if they leave they just leave you with a new egg lmao
more daily activities, such as watering trees and going out exploring or to the park
more interactiveness, you can pet your tama and they goof around/have idle animations
you can get pretty much anything with the camera function by scanning qr codes, but because its a slow process I never felt like abusing this feature
there's a notebook where you log everything new pretty much, which I find very nice
bulkiness of device makes it pleasant to hold
very cute character roster, I actually like every single one you can get lol
very pretty design. like, the device itself. I like all of the shells
happiness is harder to get to max but depletes very slowly
you can be best friends with your tama
beeps when you have to clean after your tama
I do not like how dark the pictures of anything that isn't a screen look like
buttons can seem unresponsive until you get used to them
significantly heavy if worn on a lanyard
not easy to carry outside with you
honestly that might be it
overall if I had to choose between the pix and the uni, I wouldn't be able to.
I think they're both very good devices, and having them both, they definitely complement each other!
I've loved running them both so far and can't wait for more tamadventures with my kikitchi and lovelitchi :3
