It took you a while to get back to you. To feel like you again. Now that you had you back, you swore to yourself that you wouldnât let anything jeopardize that. You hadnât dated anyone in a year or so for that reason. You hadnât dated anyone to focus on yourself. It had been that long since you had last seen Cregan, and you didnât think youâd see him again for that matter. But having mutual friends didnât make that easy. It was like there was a silent agreement that the two of you just shouldnât be around each other in social settings. It wasnât a messy break up by any means, but that didnât mean it didnât hurt any less.
Cregan didnât cheat or lie or anything, but he refused to open up. Be vulnerable. Let you in. You respected his space and boundaries, but there was too big of a wall that you failed to get through. He let his past hurt lead the relationship. It started very flirty and charming and wonderful. It was fun to start dating Cregan. It felt good to have his attention and when it was fun it was great. It all ended when the four letter word came into play. You felt yourself falling in love with him, so with confidence, you told him.
Some days you wish you never said it. Never felt it. The minute you told him how you felt, you saw him slip away. Less conversation, more guarding himself. Less affection. Less of him. So you took your note and left. It was a silent leave, he didnât question it. Didnât even try to chase you, and when you noticed, you stopped trying. Stopped feeling. It made you feel like giving your time and effort to anyone was worthless, that your time and love wouldnât be valued or cared for. But this year alone taught you that was not the case. You learned your time was precious and your effort was a gift, but you needed the right people to give it to. Jace, Baela, and Rhaena were those people. They had helped you through that hard time of your life and things finally started to feel normal again.
It all started to feel normalâŚuntil Jaceâs birthday. You were invited obviously, but you knew that meant Cregan was too. However, you could put old memories aside and let this day be about Jace. He deserved it anyway, everyone deserves a good birthday.
âSo is she going to be there?â Cregan asked Jace as they were setting up everything for his birthday. Jace took a beat but answered honestly. âYes, sheâs our friend and I want her here.â Jaceâs tone was almost defensive but he dropped it. Cregan threw his hands up in defense. Cregan didnât want to admit it out loud, but he wanted to see you. Throughout the year he had been thinking about you. Thinking about how if he would have just said it back he would still have you. Thinking that he shouldnât have been so guarded to the person who was there for him the most, he wouldnât be in the situation he was in now. âI was just wondering, I promise Iâll behave.â Cregan reassured Jace.
Jace was protective of you. In fact, all of Creganâs friends were. It wasnât a matter of them choosing you over him, Cregan knew why. It was because Cregan let something so good go and he had nobody to blame but himself. âYou miss her?â Jace asked Cregan with a raised eyebrow. Jace knew the answer, he just wanted Cregan to admit it. Cregan huffed and looked everywhere except for Jace. âI just thought you must be since you brought up the topic of her.â Jace retorted, but was interrupted by the doorbell ring. The party had arrived and Cregan knew he had to get it together.
You naturally gravitated to your group of friends. Jace welcomed you with open arms and you wished him a happy birthday. âThanks for coming.â He said and nodded at people who passed him by. Jace knew no stranger and knew how to hold a crowd. âI wouldnât miss it for the world.â You smiled at him and Baela as she lovingly rubbed his back. Rhaena cleared her throat and looked at you, you threw her a look of confusion until you looked at who rounded the corner handing Jace a drink. âItâs good to see you, y/n.â He said and shot you a small smile. There it was. That smile that took you a good year to get over, coming all right back. You swallowed the lump in your throat and chased it with a drink.
âIâm glad to see youâre doing well, Cregan.â Was all you could muster. âHey, thereâs someone I wanted you to meet.â Rhaena lied to you just to get you out of the situation. Youâre kind of glad she did too. You felt Cregan look at you as you walked down the hall. âWho was it you wanted me to meet?â You played it off to Rhaena. âAre you okay?â She asked as she squeezed your arm. You sighed and looked everywhere but her, and back at him. He didnât see you luckily but you noticed although he was laughing with Jace, his mind was elsewhere.
âHey, we can leave if youâre uncomfortable.â She offered. You shook your head. You were here for Jace, and stay here you would. âNo, in fact, lets go back out there. This is about him.â You picked yourself up like you normally would and walked back into the living room. Jace was laughing itâs Cregan as Baela explained a joke. âDid she tell you the famous joke?â You asked and stood between Cregan and Jace. Something in you wanted to stand this close, but you werenât going to play into it. Just let it be. When you werenât looking Cregan smiled down at you and looked back at Jace as he raised his eyebrows up and looked at him above the lip of the cup.
Hours had passed by and you caught yourself dipping your feet in the pool. All night you had been celebrating Jace and it felt like old times again, the five of you laughing together, partying, dancing. Like nothing had changed. You had missed this. It was like you never missed a beat. Your quiet time to yourself was briefly interrupted when a tall figure stood beside you rolling up his pant legs and taking his socks and shoes off. âComing for a dip?â You asked Cregan as he sat next to you. He offered you a sip of his drink and you smiled a took a swig. He sat dangerously close to you, fingers brushing as you propped yourself up on the concrete at the pool. You thought about the night and how it felt like old times, but you remembered how reserved he can be too. Then your fears came back.
âYou look great, I mean you always have. You always do-â He started rambling like he didnât know how to talk to you. He missed you terribly. You laughed and pat his hand next to you for comfort. âWhy are you acting like this?â You asked him while looking at the water, you couldnât risk letting any tears fall, nor letting him see it. He didnât deserve your vulnerability if he wasnât willing to show his. âWhy do you think?â He asks looking down to catch your eyes. You lifted your head and met his grey eyes. For the first time you saw it. He was open, scared but open. âNo, Cregan. I want to hear it.â His jaw dropped slightly.
âI should have said it back. I felt the same but I was scared.â He admitted. A pang of pain hit your chest. âItâs okay if you donât feel the same anymore. I know what I did, and I know what I lost. I deserved it.â Everyone Cregan had ever loved had left him in some way. Choice, death, betrayal. He didnât want to risk it with you. He felt as if he was some bad luck charm. Truth was, you still loved one another. Sure you took a year to collect yourself, but something in you thought youâd maybe never feel these feelings for Cregan again. That was a lie, but you couldnât let him off this easy. He had to really know what he did. âI thought about ways to ask if you wanted to start over, try again. I donât know, I feel kind of dumb. You are probably doing better without-â
Your lips moved slowly and in sync. âCregan, Iâve always been someone you can tell things to. Iâm not going anywhere.â You said brushing your noses. âYou canât promise that.â There it was, his fear creeping its way in. You brought your other hand up to hold his face, caress his hair and make him look you in the eyes. You gave him a look of promise. Or a second chance and he better not fuck it up this time.
âOkay.â Was all he could say and he let you hold him. This was the vulnerability you craved, needed from him. No more walls, no more silent treatment. He went in for another kiss but you pulled away. âI think we have a birthday party to continue.â You smiled at him and let him peck your cheek.
You let him help you up and carried your shoes in his other hand while he held your hand walking inside. Baela raised her eyebrows at the sight and Jace immediately looked at Baela. âTold you.â Was all he said .
âTold her what?â You asked as you felt Cregan pull you closer by the waist. âThat this man grew a brain in your year break.â Creganâs jaw dropped and you couldnât help but to laugh. This was originally on him, but you could see Cregan changed some over the year. Now he just had to keep it up.
âWell obviously he had some sense about him since he got her back.â Rhaena winked at you and led everyone to join in dancing. The night definitely didnât go as you expected but you couldnât complain.
