Today was the day that you and your boyfriend were going to do something you hadn't in a very long time; go to the beach.
Going to the beach was fun! It really was. You could kick around in the sand, build a sand castle, fly a kite, throw a frisbee, or even just go for a walk by the waves.
Or at least, it was fun if you didn't burn easily. Two minutes under the sun, and you were guaranteed to look like a lobster for the next week. Mild sun, hot sun—it didn't matter. You burnt. Even with a hefty amount of sunblock, you burnt so easily, it was almost ridiculous. Not to mention the fact it was always hot as hell. You preferred the cool temperature of indoors, or even just in somewhere shady. The beach however, provided no shade, sun beating down on the shore all day.
Short to say, beach days weren't your favorite.
You put up lots of protest too. But Naruto, the said boyfriend you were going to spend the torturous day at the beach with, flashed his big blue puppy dog eyes, and you caved almost immediately.
So there you were, sitting on a towel, umbrella stuck in the sand and providing you with minimal shade. You slathered a hefty amount of sunblock onto your legs, arms, neck. Practically anywhere on your body where skin had even a chance of seeing the sun.
"Hey! Come check out this sandcastle I made!" Naruto lifted the bucket he had been packing sand into for the last ten minutes, revealing a well crafted structure of damp sand. He grinned at the sight, this castle being the second attempt of building one that day. The first was a complete and utter fail, ending in a giant puddle of soppy sand that laid off to the side.
But you weren't paying attention, too busy slathering your right leg in thick sunscreen.
Naruto looked up, pushing his bottom lip out into a pout at having been ignored. "[name]?!"
You glanced at him, glop of sunscreen in your hand. Eyeing the sandcastle he had just built, you giggled, before smiling at him. "It's cute. Better than the last one. That's for sure."
Naruto laughed sheepishly, swatting at the remains of the failure castle. He flashed you an innocent smile, sliding over to lounge in front of the remains. It was the only area where wet sand was on the dry beach, but his body blocked the abnormality from your view. "What castle? That was my first attempt, 'ttebayo!"
You shook your head, moving to put the sunscreen on your arm. "If you say so."
Naruto watched you put sunscreen on. He looked up to the sky, shielding the sun from his eyes, before looking back to you.
It wasn't that hot out here to him. Besides, with his naturally tanned skin, he barely bunt at all. He didn't really understand why going out in the sun was such a pain for you, but he wished you could enjoy yourself more without having to put on layers and layers of that thick sunscreen that didn't smell so good, and seemed really, really uncomfortable to wear.
Maybe making a castle with him would help you feel better? He wouldn't mind doing that with you either. You were always better at doing more technical stuff like that than he was anyway.
"Hey, wanna come make a castle with me?" Naruto picked up the sand pail and shovel, holding them beside his face with a promising grin.
"I would, but I don't wanna burn. Plus, it's really hot out there."
Naruto frowned in defeat, dropping the beach toys to his side.
You continued to put on your sunblock, not paying much attention to your pouting boyfriend. It was a good thing you didn't look either. If you had caught even the slightest glimpse of him, it's likely you would have caved for the second time that day. Naruto was like a sad little golden retriever when he was upset—and you hated sad things like that.
Something so cute really shouldn't be so sad.
Naruto eyed the bottle of sunblock, before gasping at his sudden idea.
"Say..." he said mischievously. "Is that stuff waterproof?"
You shot him a questioning look, but reached out and took the bottle, reading the back. You nodded your head. "Mhm. Why'd you wanna know?"
"Oh... no reason."
"Alright."
Not thinking much of your boyfriends suspicious tone, you finished applying the smelly sunscreen and set the bottle back into your bag. You let out a sigh and leaned back onto your beach towel. Sliding on a pair of sunglasses, you closed your eyes and finally relaxed, knowing you weren't going to turn into a lobster the next day—
"Agh!" You screeched as Naruto hoisted you up and threw you over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. The sunglasses slid off your face and landed on the beach towel covered in a heap of sand.
Your cheeky boyfriend didn't pay your cry any mind, merely grinning and bolted toward the water, kicking up sand. "You said you were hot, right?!"
Eyes widening in understanding, you thrashed around in his grip. "Don't you dare!"
But he didn't respond. He just laughed harder at your cries of panic. He knew you weren't actually scared, and would probably kick his ass for doing this in the first place later, but he thought that was a decent price to pay. After all, he wanted to go to the beach to spend time with you. Not so you could lay around and nap. If he wanted to do that he would have gone to the beach with Shikamaru.
Running out till he was waist deep, Naruto tossed you into the water, droplets splashing from your impact and spraying him.
You gasped at the sudden coolness that washed over you, and shot up out of the water, submerging from underneath sopping wet. Your hair was flattened to your head, and you had to peel it back from your eyes to get a look at your cheekily grinning boyfriend.
"So," he crossed his arms and gave you a proud look. "Didja' cool off?"
"I guess I did!" You feigned a look of thought. "Now that I think about it, you seem pretty hot too..."
Naruto looked at you in confusion. "Huh—?"
He let out a girlish scream as you suddenly tackled him into the water, the both of you disappearing underneath the surface.
Maybe going to the beach wasn't that bad overall.
Too bad the sunscreen was actually water resistant.
Not water proof.
