genshin impact x reader: the inventor and their traveller (series masterlist)
"...from each invention contributing to an even larger step forward, and each step forward contributing to your dream: Fontaine, the land of justice, technological advancements, flashy apparel and the like."
features kazuha
taglist: ?
warnings: mentions of alcohol and drunkards (chapter 4)
notes: THIS IS MY FIRST SERIES WOO I hope this is alright to the tumblr gods
chapter 1: the strange man with a vision and the flying contraption
Iâve really wanted to revisit this for a long time, and after some thought I decided to try doing so this year.
this series meant so much to me when I started out. I was 13 and had just begun writing on tumblr, so keen on imitating the work of the writers I admired so much. kazuha was my favourite character at that time, and genshin was my main source comfort through those years.
I remember not having much of a plot plannedâ Iâve never been very good at doing thatâ so I poured a hefty amount of my own experiences and feelings as a 13 year old. I wrote based on my relationships with family, and as a lonely kid I wrote so much if the things that I wanted someone to tell me. this fic, in its early stages, had kept me afloat through transitions back to school after covid and struggles with my own loneliness.
hopefully, Iâll be able to write something nice. while Iâm not continuing where the plot left off, Iâll be (hopefully) expanding charactersâ stories and making more changes to the storyâ doing some kind of ârewriteâ of this fic.
wish me luck!! and stay tuned on the progress ahead, if youâd like :).
What are your thoughts on Varka from Genshin also being a girl dad? đ I feel heâd have one? Maybe two?
Idk he is just so husband and family-man coded to me lmao
When He Has a Family (Varka x Reader. Headcanons + Snippets)
A/N: Hi there! :) Thank you so much for your patience. I originally meant to give a short reply⌠and then my brain said: absolutely not. So I ended up writing headcanons and snippets.
I could hear and see him immediately while writing this. And yes, he is very much a girl dad⌠or really just a dad overall. Varka has strong opinions about starting a family and zero chill about expressing them. (I have even more thoughts about husband!Varka and family life in my drafts, so... :D) Hope youâll enjoy this one. đ

â ⌠â
Once Varka settles down with you, the thought of children comes naturally to him.
It probably comes early, too. This is a man who adopts half of Teyvat without even trying, who takes one look at a someone and goes âthatâs mine to protect now.â His own children? The idea makes something warm settle in his chest.
Heâd marry first, though. Thatâs important to him. Commitment, stability, a proper foundation. Then children.
And heâd be direct about it.
âââââ
Bringing It Up
Youâre halfway through your meal when he says it, casual as anything:
âBeen thinking,â Varka says, cutting into his meat, âwe should have children.â
You nearly choke on your beverage.
Heâs completely unbothered, that easy confidence radiating from him. âA few, I think. Two or three at least. Maybe four.â He glances up, and thereâs that warm gleam in his eyes. âWhat do you think?â
âVarkaââ
âIâd be a good father.â Just certainty. âAnd youâd be incredible. Iâve seen how you are with the younger knights. Patient. Kind.â His smile widens. âBeautiful.â
âAre you trying to charm me into this?â
âIs it working?â
(It is.)
Or heâd bring it up in public, completely shameless:
âWe should start trying for children soon,â he says conversationally as you pass the fountain.
Several people turn to stare.
You flush. âVarkaââ
âWhat? Iâm being practical.â But thereâs mischief in his expression now, the way he leans down to murmur in your ear: âUnless youâd prefer I convince you in private?â
Your face burns hotter, and you smack his arm.
He catches your wrist, grinning. âIâll take that as a yes.â
His laugh rumbles through you, warm and delighted. âTonight, then.â
âââââ
Showing His Desire
When youâre intimate, Varka makes his intentions very clear.
His hands map every inch of you, like heâs already imagining the changes to come. When he pulls you against himâyour back to his chest, his arms wrapped around your waistâhe buries his face in your neck and breathes.
âYouâd be so beautiful,â he murmurs against your skin, hands sliding down to your hips. âCarrying our child.â
His thumbs trace slow circles there, possessive and worshipful at once.
His lips trace your shoulder, your neck, the shell of your ear. Each kiss deliberate.
âI think about it all the time.â His voice drops lower, rougher. âYou, round with my child. Knowing I put them there.â
His hands tighten on your waist as he turns you to face him, eyes dark and intense.
âLet me,â he breathes, already backing you toward the bed. âLet me give you everything.â
And when his hands slide under your clothes, when his mouth claims yours with desperate certainty, when he touches you like youâre the most precious thing in the worldâ
You understand exactly how wild the idea drives him.
âââââ
When You Tell Him
When you tell him youâre pregnant, Varka is thrilled.
You barely get the words out before heâs lifting you off your feetâhands secure at your waist, spinning you once with a whoop of joyâbefore setting you down with sudden carefulness. Already protective.
âReally?â His hands frame your face, eyes searching yours. When you nod, his grin could light all of Mondstadt.
âââââ
During the Pregnancy
He tells everyone.
The knights get daily updates. âThe baby kicked today.â âSheâs craving grapes lately.â âDid you know babies can hear voices in the womb? Iâve been reading to them.â
Jean looks exhausted by week three.
But Varka doesnât care. Heâs proud. His family is growing, and the world should know.
Grape cravings become his personal mission. He brings baskets from Dawn Winery. You find them waiting on the table, the counter, once even on your pillow with a note: For you and little one.
He feeds them to you sometimes. Sitting together in the evening, his hand gentle as he brings one to your lips. You bite down, and his thumb brushes your mouth, lingering.
âSweet,â he murmurs, eyes warm.
Then he leans in and kisses you.
âVery sweet,â Varka says against your mouth, and you feel his smile.
He watches you constantly. Making sure youâre comfortable, that youâre eating enough, that youâre not overexerting yourself. His protectiveness cranks up tenfold, but itâs never smothering.
When you catch him staring, he never looks away.
âCanât help it,â he says simply. His hand settles on your growing belly. Protective. âYouâre beautiful like this.â
Whenever he gets the chance, he cups your face and kisses you. âYouâre both perfect.â
âââââ
The First Child
When your daughter arrives, Varka looks at her like sheâs made of starlight.
âHello, little one,â he murmurs, this mountain of a man cradling this tiny person with infinite gentleness. âIâm your father.â
She wraps her tiny hand around his finger, and something in his expression just melts.
From that moment, heâs gone.
Mornings become his favorite. You wake to find him already awake, your daughter cradled against his bare chest as he talks to her softly.
âYour mother is the strongest person I know,â heâs saying, voice low and warm. âYouâll see. Sheâs brilliant and kind and far too good for me, but somehow she chose me anyway.â
He glances over, catches you watching. He smiles.
âMorning, love.â He shifts carefully, making room for you against his side. âShe was fussing. I didnât want to wake you.â
You settle against him, and he wraps his free arm around you, pulling you close.
Evenings are for sharing everything:
âShe smiled at me today,â Varka announces as youâre preparing for bed. âA real smile. Iâm certain of it.â
You laugh softly. âYou said that yesterday.â
âThis time was different.â Heâs already pulling you into bed, arranging you against him with easy familiarity. âShe definitely recognized me. And she made this little soundââ
He demonstrates, some soft coo that makes you muffle your laughter in his chest.
âLaugh all you want,â he says, grinning. âIâm right. Our daughter is brilliant.â
Varka carries your daughter everywhere on his shoulders. This enormous knight with this tiny girl perched above the world, her hands tangled in his hair as she shrieks with delight.
He makes her flower crowns (surprisingly deft fingers weaving cecilias and windwheel asters). She wears them like a princess, and he looks at her like she is one.
âGrand Master,â one of the knights says carefully, âthereâs a meetingââ
âShe wanted to see the ducks,â Varka interrupts cheerfully, not even slowing down. âThe meeting can wait.â
(The meeting waits.)
Somehow, having a family makes Varka better at his job.
Heâs more focused, more efficient. He delegates more easily, trusts his knights more completely. Not because he cares less about Mondstadtâbut because he has even more reason to protect it now.
âHappy at home means clear-headed at work,â he explains when Jean asks how heâs managing everything. âMy family gives me purpose. Makes everything else easier.â
âââââ
The Second Child
When your daughter is about two, Varka brings it up again.
Youâre settling into bed when his arms wrap around you from behind, pulling you against him. His lips find your neck, that familiar warmth spreading through you.
âYouâre incredible, you know that?â he murmurs between kisses. âWatching you with her⌠youâre such a wonderful mother.â
His hands slide over your waist, your hips, reverently possessive.
âAnd you look so beautiful. Every day.â His voice drops. âI keep thinking we could do this again.â
You turn in his arms, finding his eyes dark and intent.
âLetâs have another one,â he says simply. Seriously. âYeah?â
And when you smile, when you pull him down for a kissâ
His joy is palpable.
âââââââââââââ
Two Daughters
Your daughters are different in temperament but equally adored.
Varka indulges them in everything. You find him crammed into a chair far too small for him, pinky raised as he pretends to sip from a tiny cup.
âMore tea, Papa?â
âPlease,â he rumbles, holding out the cup. âCanât say no to tea this good.â
He participates fully. Genuine enjoyment. When they want to play knights, heâs the dragon. When they want to braid his hair, he sits perfectly still for an hour.
When they start dancingâspinning in circles, giggling, completely off-rhythmâhe joins them without hesitation. Big, clumsy twirls that make them shriek with laughter. He doesnât care how ridiculous he looks. Heâs having fun.
Then he spots you watching from the doorway.
âOh no you donât,â he says, grinning as he reaches for you. âYouâre dancing too.â
Before you can protest, youâre pulled into the chaos. One daughter clinging to your hand, the other to his, all of you spinning in a messy circle while they laugh so hard they can barely stand.
Varkaâs eyes meet yours over their heads, warm and bright and full of joy.
This, his expression says. This is everything.
When they fight over the same toy, he sits down between them with infinite patience.
âYou both want the wooden horse?â He looks between them seriously. âThen youâll have to share. Take turns. Thatâs what family does. We look out for each other.â
He shows them how, guiding their little hands, praising when they manage it.
âââââ
At the Knights of Favonius Headquarters
Varka brings your children to work sometimes, unable to help himself. Theyâre endlessly curious, asking questions about everything.
âPapa, why do you have a sword?â
âTo protect people,â he explains, kneeling down to their level. âWhen someoneâs in trouble, we help them. Thatâs what knights do.â
âCan we have swords?â
His laugh booms. âWooden ones, for now.â
And then they have wooden swords, and theyâre âfightingâ him with all their might while he pretends to be gravely wounded, falling dramatically to the ground.
You watch from the doorway, shaking your head fondly.
He catches your eye, and that grin tells you everything: I love this. I love them. I love you.
Then heâs on his feet, crossing to you in three long strides. His kiss is firm and sure and entirely unapologetic, even with the knights watching, even with your daughters giggling and running circles around you both.
âMama! Papa is kissing again!â
âThatâs because I love your mother,â he announces proudly, arm still around your waist.
He looks at you then, and the heat in his gaze makes your breath catch even surrounded by giggling children and watching knights.
âVery, very much,â he adds, quieter, just for you.
âââââ
The Third Child
When the third arrivesâa boy this timeâVarka is just as besotted.
âThree,â he marvels, holding his son with practiced ease. âWe have three.â
He looks at you with such devotion it makes your chest tight.
âYouâve given me everything.â
âââââ
Teaching Equality
As they grow, Varka treats all three the same. Fighting lessons for all. Chores for all. Expectations for all.
âDoesnât matter if youâre a boy or a girl,â he says, steady and sure. âWhat matters is youâre kind. You help people who need it. And you look out for each other.â
He teaches them to fight with equal rigor. His son doesnât get special treatment, his daughters donât get coddled.
âYouâre all strong,â he says. âAnd Iâll teach you to protect yourselves. And anyone who needs your help.â
âââââ
Bedtime with Three
Getting three children to bed should be chaos.
Somehow, with Varka, itâs not.
Heâs got your son tucked in the crook of one arm, already drowsy. Your middle daughter is wrapped around his leg, refusing to let go. Your eldest is perched on his shoulders, playing with his hair.
âAlright,â he announces. âStory time. Everyone to bed.â
âBut Papaââ
âNo buts.â His tone is firm but warm. âYou all need sleep. Growing takes energy.â
He settles onto the floor of the nursery, and they immediately pile onto him. Your son curled against his chest, your daughters tucked under each arm.
You lean against the doorframe, watching.
His voice rumbles through the quiet room as he tells them a story. Something about a knight and a dragon and three brave children. His hands stroke their hair, patient as they interrupt with questions, indulgent when they argue about plot details.
One by one, they drift off.
He waits until all three are deeply asleep before carefully, carefully extracting himself. He tucks each one in, pressing kisses to their foreheads.
When he finally makes it to the door, he finds you watching with undisguised affection.
âWhat?â he asks softly, pulling you against him.
âYouâre really good at this.â
His smile is tired but content. âGot a lot of practice.â He pauses. âAnd a lot of motivation.â
He kisses you. Slow and thorough and full of promise.
âCome to bed,â he murmurs against your lips. âBefore they wake up.â
âImpatient?â
âAbsolutely.â Heâs grinning. âThey get you all day. I want you all night.â
âââââ
Taking Care of You
âAlright,â Varka announces one morning, herding all three children toward the door. âYour mother has been taking care of everyone all week. Today, weâre taking care of her.â
âWhere are we going?â your son asks.
âWherever she wants.â Varka glances at you with that warm smile. âWithin reason.â
You laugh. âI want to sit. And eat something I didnât have to cook.â
âDone.â Heâs already moving, children in tow. âGood Hunter it is. Then the meadows. Then home for quiet time while Mama rests.â
He orchestrates the whole day, keeping the children entertained, fed, and happy while making sure you donât lift a finger.
That night, after theyâre all asleep, he finds you in bed.
âYou didnât have to do all that,â you say softly.
ââCourse I did.â His arm comes around you immediately, pulling you into his chest as he kisses your temple. âYou give everything to them. To me. Let me give back.â
His hands are already working the tension from your shoulders, and you melt into him.
âI love you,â he says. âMore every day.â
âââââ
Understanding Their Differences
But heâs also fascinated by their individual perspectives.
Heâll sit with his daughters as they play, asking questions. âWhy does the doll need a sword?â âWhat are you building?â Really listening to their answers.
With his son, same curiosity. âWhatâs your favorite story?â âWhy did you choose that color?â
He wants to understand each of them completely. To know how they think, what they love, what they fear.
âTheyâre all so different,â Varka tells you one night, wonder in his voice. âThree people we made. Three entire people with their own minds and hearts.â
His arm tightens around you.
âThank you,â he whispers. âFor all of this.â
â ⌠â

A/N. wassupp, this was kinda rushed since i wanted to squeeze this one out. but i guess it fits the train theme cause yk.. fact paced... anyway, thank you so much for the support on my first post! happy reading âď¸
fushiguro megumi who you absolutely never expected to become a train conductor. you thought he'd be a veterinarian for he'd always shown care to animals. in fact, plenty of the textbooks in his room backed up your claim.
but when you asked him what university he applied to, you couldn't figure him out when he had an it-might-seem-crazy-what-i'm-boutta-say expression etched on his face.Â
"oh, just todai."Â
you raised your eyebrows. just one university? and it was THE university of tokyo? "huh, well iâm sure youâll pass since you're smart anywaâ"Â
"i purposely flunked the entrance exams."Â
"...WHAT?!"Â
pre-train worker!megumi who you thought was a little coo-coo for that stunt. you thought he was kidding. he wasn't. he even showed you the test results from the university's online portalâand boy, were you worried for his future.Â
pre-train worker!megumi admitted that despite his gift in the field of science and maths, he chose not to pursue it, his reason similar to your decision of not pursuing literature and philosophy: you both didn't want to get paid for your passions.Â
and you understood him.Â
so while you continued your bachelor studies to become a typical corporate slave public accountant, he too learned railroad work in vocational school. after two years of on-site, hands-on learning, he graduatedâteasing you for still having to attend your lectures whereas heâs already working.
train worker!megumi whose career began as a station staff. his routine was comprised of assisting commuters, collecting tickets, and ensuring their safety when boarding the ride.
ââand get this: some boy with long, light blue hair kept running around the platform.â megumi rants with you listening through the other end of the phone call.
âarenât there a lot of circumstances like that in your job?â
âoh, yes. but this specific child was really pissing me off. that little shit would come up to a stranger and ask them whether they think the soul or the body came first. if they answered âbody,â that fucker would challenge them into a philosophical debate.â
your mouth was slightly agape as you thought of how to respond. âat least it was only today..?â
âi dealt with that for about about an hour and a half before he was escorted out.â he replied in monotone, but you knew better, sensing how tired he was today.
âthatâs rough. if you were here, maybe i could listen better.â
megumiâs voice shifted to be just a little softer. âyou miss me?â his microphone picked that up clearly, like he brought the phone closer to his lips.
âa lot. i miss seeing your face, i miss us huggingâŚâ you pause, holding in a chuckle. âand i miss you helping me with my statistics report.â
you could practically hear your boyfriend clicking his tongue with a cuss.Â
âoh, fuck off.âÂ
by the time youâve graduated college, station staff!megumi got promoted to train conductor. you wonder, how did he manage to do that in just two years of service? but then again, itâs him. youâve seen how he handled his responsibilities when you both were still in high school. ah, so itâs work ethics.
it was train conductor!megumiâs pre-recorded announcements that would play over the PA system.
âthe next station is: shibuya.âÂ
at times train conductor!megumi collects fares, eyes of other ladies would swarm him. well, could you really blame them when your partner was that eye-catching? the way his tailored uniform looked on his tall, lean figure; how the short brim of his hatâwhich he complains about since it limits his field vision on the vertical scaleâaccentuates his serious expression at the right angle?
you were once dying because of ms excel for like, who knows what?
but then you heard the customized notification sound from your phone.
you opened it, and voila! a picture of megumi trying on his conductor uniform.
you suddenly felt motivated to finish your task after that.
âŚ
seven years later in their shared apartment, at 28-years-old, train driver!megumi proposes to certified public accountant!reader in their shared apartment.Â
you were by the window, staring at the nightâs light-polluted sky.
megumi quietly approaches you from behind, his arms encircling you for a few moments until he mutters out your name
âhm?â
he spun you around so you could face him, you feel the weight of his eyes admiring yours.
he didnât drop down to one knee immediately, no. that would feel too rushed, too dangerous for a man who always followed safety protocols. instead, he keeps his hands on your waist, thumb tracing the soft cotton blend of your shirtâa great contrast from his calloused hands from years of gripping the master controller.
âour schedule for next quarter came in.â
you hum in response, the side of your pressing against his shoulder. âare you finally getting weekends off?â
âno, sadly.â a subtle smile appears on his face. âbut that got me realizing... my mind always runs on starts and stops. thirty seconds here, one minute there. just making sure people arrive on time.â
he lifts your head up, ushering you away for a second as he grabs something for his pocket. the room was dim, save for the warm lamp on the nightstand.Â
âbut i want a permanent station,â his hand brings up the velvet box in front of you. âi want to come home to the same person regardless of what shift iâm on.âÂ
he flips the box open. inside was a ringâan elegant one that wasnât flashy but would be immediately noticed the moment it wraps around your finger.Â
â[name], will you marry me?â
and a thousand times youâll be each otherâs permanent station.
âyes.â

i luv cute megumi... why do so many of u write him as mean he is sweet
megumi fushiguro is a secret sweetheart. at first, you never would've guessed it from how he carries himself. stone cold, unemotional, mysterious in a way.
the way he looked at you made it no secret how he felt. his eyes practically shone every time you were in his line of sight. even when you're just doing basic tasks he loves watching you, especially when it's something you love.
even more so, he loves looking at you when you lie next to him in bed. as you drift off he stays awake; eyes half closed and a sleepy smile on his face.
megumi adores pressing kisses onto your face, it could be your cheek, forehead, or lips. he doesn't care. he just wants to kiss all over you.
his cheeks turn pink every time he kisses you, some part of him still feels awkward being affectionate. he knows you deserve it, and he wants to give his all to you.
he allows himself to be vulnerable with you, opening his heart and soul to you. every night he spends with you he pulls you close to him, refusing to let go. the feeling of your skin against his is what feels like home to him.
after a while he finds himself gravitating toward you to hold hands in public. he gives you a soft smile as his fingers brush against yours before fully intertwining.
there is no more to break down, megumi fushiguro is yours. heart and soul.
the mischaracterization and under appreciation of satoru gojo in the jjk fandom lowkey pisses me odd a little bit.
"oh emery he's not under appreciated, everyone loves himâ" yes, you have a point. everyone does love him. but maybe not for the right reasons. for a ton of people their love for satoru does not go past his appearance.
satoru has just as tragic a story as other characters in jjk, and is often overlooked.
satoru gojo was born to one of the big 3 families and had both the gojo clan's hereditary techniques: six eyes and limitless. the balance of the world shifted when he was born.
he has been used as a weapon his entire life and just viewed as, "the strongest." he never really developed relationships with people outside of suguru geto, his best friend, his only friend, really.
despite being viewed as annoying, selfish, or just a weapon by his peers he never really strayed from his morals or goals.
satoru isn't even selfish either, he does so much for other people. he hid sukuna's last finger to delay yuji's execution, he helped delay yuta's execution, when riko was supposed to return to jujutsu tech he delayed that trip to let her have another day, and he has dedicated his life to raising a new age of sorcerers to "fix" jujutsu society.
"nobody will ever need to be alone again," not like he was. satoru held a sentiment that jujutsu society took the youth from young people, just like what happened to him. he didn't want that to happen anymore.
"no matter how many allies you have around you, when you die, you'll be alone." at the end of the day he understands that he stands alone, being the strongest. he has been isolated by this his entire life. even with those he considered close, the infinite void of isolation could not be filled.
suguru geto did not understand gojo, nor did gojo understand him. gojo was able to be unapologetically himself with geto though. he was able to have a break from being a strong sorcerer and let himself be. maybe that's why they got along so well.
satoru is almost always using one of his techniques, which exhausts his system. he uses the disguise of childlike immaturity and being funny and "carefree" to cover up how he really feels.
he cares for his students. he cares for his friends.
i also find it important to say gojo is NOT a father figure to megumi. he lacks the authority and will to be that. yes, he does care for megumi and tsumiki, but he was not around as much as he should've been. he is a mentor figure for sure, but not a father. i think a lot of people say that he is a father figure for megumi since he took him under his wing after toji left, but that is not really what happened.
megumi was part of what made satoru remain hopeful for the future of jujutsu. he realized that there are still sorcerers with the potential to be just as strong as he is, and that there is a reason to keep going. this is why when he wakes up from his "flashback dream," megumi is the first person he looks toward. he is smiling proudly to himself. he knows it isn't over.
yes, he is the strongest, and he does push himself to remain in that spot, but he is also more than that. he is ultimately a broken person who is trying to hold the entire world together.
yuji being gentle and sweet before your first time together⌠even if you feel as if youâre ruining everything
suggestive (but they donât actually do anything yet dwdw!!) reader dissociates (?) a little (more like she spaces out).
youâre splayed across the bed in yujiâs childhood home. heâs so handsome, his figure above you, innately imposing yet still unobtrusive. gentle, sturdy and warm. you want to curl into it forever, mould a home in his heart so you could softly squiggle your way into being with him forever.
heâs breathing heavily against you, tepid air fanning against your face and neck, his calmness and control a stark contrast to yours. your arms stay pinned to your sides, not knowing what to do except freeze.
âI love you,â yuji pants, his hand brushing over yours before you intertwine your fingers together with his. he takes notice of this. large inhale. âI love you so much, sweetheart. sometimes I donât know what to do with myself.â large exhale. itâs like heâs taking up and consuming every little part of you. you never thought this could be something you wanted.
your mind has been separated from your body, two different entities borne from a mass of limbs and nerves, and a dissociating mind.
this condition of yours is congenital: your proclivity to mess up and make things worse every time. you donât know why you have it; you donât know how to treat it. now, yuji has to fix you by your broken gears, and wind you until youâre up and running again.
âhey? stay with me, honey,â yuji says. you see his eyes looking at you, your brain inputting that information; there are fingers that stroke the skin of your bodyâ yujiâs fingers, itâs all yuji, you have to remind yourself. â[name], honey, itâs yuji. come on,â he instructs, âlook at me. just keep your eyes here, okay?â
âokay,â you hear, registering the sound of your own voice.
he must have been expecting more, expecting something better. a prettier face or a better body or shaved skin. youâre horrible. this was supposed to be his first time, and youâve ruined it entirely by being the basket case you always manage to be in the end.
âhold my hand?â
automatic movements, involuntary actions. he calls you and itâs as if all your motor nerves are conditioned to do whatever he commands. your hand grabs his, your skin on his like a deadweight. you feel terrible for doing this to him.
âgood job!â he exclaims softly, âlook at me, would you?â
you donât know what youâre looking at, your optical processing a blur. but when he tells you to look, you know youâll find him somehow.
his eyes are brown as wood, like the trees from your sepia-hued hometown. maybe you were always meant to look into them, you think, as your eyes finally become yours again, your body and mind slowly merging into each other once more.
âI love you,â he gives your forehead a peck, raising your leg to wrap around his waist, âI love you so much,â a kiss to your cheek, portions of warm breath fanning against your ear and neck. âwould you let me take care of you?â
you nod hazily. you rush to unbuckle your skirt, remove your underwearâ but he stops you, guiding your hands to rest. âIâll handle everything.â
this body that youâve lived in for years has never looked special, at least to you. the way you maintain it reminds you of maintaining a houseâ you just need to exercise and sleep every once in a while for the sole purpose of keeping things going, like chores done just to keep the house clean.
not to yuji, though. youâve never had someone love your body this much before. in moments of passion youâve seen, clothes are ripped off exaggeratedly, lingerie always torn as someone stands, helpless, taking everything from slaps to whips.
but yuji takes everything off, slowly and meticulously. you curve your body into his as he tucks his fingers under the hem of your underwear, then peels it and slides it off your leg, kissing your ankle and calf as he does so. then your discarded garments lie folded next to you.
heâs gentle. you thought it would be rougher. the things youâre used to seeing and hearingâ torn clothes, a hasty entry, being hurt over and over until it looked good.
like relieving tension, he inhales deeply when he gazes over you. you train your eyes to stay on him so that you donât slip away again.
âyouâre beautiful,â he emits, breathily, shakily, desperately, with a sense of awe you never thought someone could have around you.
he swallows once, then kneels by the bed, ensuring that his eyes are on you. âyou can let me know if it hurts, or if you want to stop,â he states, âI said Iâd handle it, but youâre the one in control here. okay?â
you hold his hand. you trust him.
oh my goodness!! this is out of my comfort zone Iâm SO SORRY if it sucks⌠Iâll probably delete this later because itâs not even done. I just couldnât write the actual smutty part, Iâm older now but still feel like a child when it comes to writing more mature scenes đ

tears & fears | fushiguro megumi, gojo satoru, ino takuma, kamo choso, nanami kento, yuuji itadori
âł he's dating you for a reason, you handle him like a pro...even when he's not having the best day; and he returns the favor. 11.5k words
a/n: I could genuinely spends days writing about the weight of responsibilities on gojo's shoulders it's actually such a sensitive topic for me. anyways, warnings: cussing, kissing, mentions of depression and other mental health, satosugu mention, panic attack (yuuji's), slightly yandere!nanami??? also, this isn't so much a like...dramatic first cry scene, it's more like how you take care of each other when you do cry. so I'm sorry if it's not exactly what you had pictured! I also want to say that I pick characters for headcanons based on whether or not I think they fit the prompt and if I can actually come up with idea for them. so characters like toji or shiu or sukuna didn't fit this prompt for meâas much as I love the idea that they're like desperately in love with me and would cry in front of me...simply put, they wouldn't (in my opinion!) so I didn't include them. and that's kind of how it is for all my headcanons. however, if you do make a request and you have specific characters in mind, let me know, and I'll do my best!
megumi doesnât cry often, but he also doesnât treat tears like some humiliating accident. his life has never rewarded denial. if anything, itâs trained him to accept that grief is a roommate you donât get to evictâyou just learn how to live without letting it eat all the food in the fridge. heâs wiry and sharp around the edges, grumpy in that way thatâs less âattitudeâ and more âtired.â he doesnât put on a brave face for applause. he puts it on because the world keeps moving whether he does or not.
so when it happensâwhen you see him cry for the first timeâit isnât cinematic. it isnât a breakdown in the rain. itâs a quiet return home that feels heavier than the door in his hand.
he comes back late. the smell of blood clings to him in a way soap doesnât fix. his uniform is clean enough to pass as clean, because heâs meticulous like that, but you can still sense it. like sorrow has a texture and itâs woven into the fabric. he takes his shoes off at the entryway. he washes his hands too long. he doesnât look at you at firstânot because he doesnât want you, but because looking would mean admitting he came back with something inside him that wonât settle.
you make space. he moves like heâs trying not to startle himself. he sets his phone down facedown, like he canât bear the idea of it buzzing with another call. he shrugs off his jacket and hangs it carefully, the kind of careful that reads like controlâlike if he can keep one thing from falling apart, maybe the rest wonât follow.
when he finally sits, itâs on the edge of the couch at first. elbows on his knees. hands clasped. head angled down. he looks like heâs bracing for impact, except the impact already happened and heâs still waiting for his body to understand that.
you sit beside him, but not pressed into him yet. you know him. he flinches from fussing, not from closeness. thereâs a difference. your hand finds his wristânot grabbing, not restraining, just warm contact. a small anchor. he swallows. his throat bobs. for a second he looks like heâs going to speak, and then his jaw tightens, and he doesnât. thatâs when you shift. slow. unhurried. like nothing about him is a problem to solve.
âcome here,â you say, quiet enough that it doesnât sound like a command. he doesnât move right away. thereâs pride there, sure, but itâs not vanity. itâs habit. the habit of being the one who handles it. the habit of not making it anyone elseâs burden. the habit of thinking heâs only allowed to take up space when heâs useful.
you donât argue with the habit. you simply make room for another habit to form. when he finally leans, itâs minimal at firstâhis shoulder brushing yours. then more. his forehead tips forward, not into your shoulder but close to it, like heâs negotiating how much to let himself have. his breathing is controlled, almost too controlled, like heâs holding the air hostage.
you donât stroke his hair. you donât shush him. you donât say, âitâs okay.â megumi hates that phrase when itâs used like a blanket over a wound. you shift behind him instead, easing him down with you, until youâre lying together on the couch the way youâve always loved most: your chest to his back, arms around him like youâre enclosing something precious. youâre careful with the pressureâfirm enough that he can feel you, gentle enough that it doesnât trap him. your chin rests near his shoulder blade. you breathe in sync on purpose, a wordless invitation for his body to copy yours until it remembers how.
he goes still. and then his shoulders hitch once. twice. the first tear doesnât make a sound. it just happens, slipping out like something finally deciding itâs done being stored. he turns his face slightly into the cushion, as if hiding it from the room, from you, from himself. but youâre behind him. thereâs nowhere to perform and nowhere to pretend. only you, holding him steady like gravity. arms wrapped around him like you hold all the love in the world and youâre enveloping him in it. like maybe, if you hold him tight enough, the pieces wonât shatter all over the place. but if they do, youâll pick them up and glue them back together. and if he finally whispers something self-blaming, you donât argue with big speechesâyou correct it gently, firmly: âyou did what you could. and you did it well.â but you donât sugarcoat things; megumi wouldnât be able to stand it if you did. he hates when people do that. when they rave about him and his heroics and say he saved the day, even when people died. even when a mother wonât see her child ever again. what is there to celebrate in that? a successful mission? he doesnât give a fuck. there is no success in grief and loss. so you donât do that. you wouldnât even know how, itâs not in you. you just tell him the truth and know that itâll have to be enough. part of being a sorcerer is watching people die. innocent people. not being able to save them. you both know that. so while itâs pointless to waste your life away on âwhat ifâs,â people still deserve to be grieved. they deserve tears and sorrow. and you and megumi will allow yourselves at least that.Â
a minute passes. maybe two. your arms donât loosen. you donât fill the silence with reassurance you canât prove. you let him have the dignity of his grief. you let him grieve the civilians the way they deserveâwithout turning it into a lesson, without turning it into a tragedy you can fix.
when he finally whispers, itâs raw with self-blame. the words are small, barely audible, like he hates that they exist at all. "I shouldâve been faster.â
you exhale, slow. you donât snap at him. you donât launch into a speech. megumi would shut down if you tried to overwhelm his guilt with your own volume. you correct it the way you correct him when he forgets to eat, when he steps outside without a jacket, when he starts carrying the world again like it belongs on his shoulders. gently. firmly. truthfully. âyou did what you could,â you say. âand you did it well.â he tenses at âwell,â and you feel it immediately, the familiar recoil. praise tastes wrong to him when itâs used to erase loss. so you add the part you both know. âand it still wasnât enough,â you continue, voice steady. âbecause sometimes it isnât. that doesnât mean it was your fault.â
thatâs the key. you donât sugarcoat it. you donât call it a successful mission. you donât ask him to celebrate survival when people died. you donât try to make grief palatable. you simply tell the truth and let it be heavy, let it sit in the room between you like a stone you are both willing to carry for a while.
megumiâs breathing breaks then, the control finally snapping, and his fingers curl over your forearm like heâs holding on to the only thing that feels steady; his tears come quietly but steadily, soaking into the cushion, and he doesnât sob loud, doesnât wail, doesnât dramatize his grief into something performativeâhe shakes in small, contained tremors, like his body can only afford sorrow in increments, like it has learned to ration vulnerability the way it rations sleep.
you stay wrapped around him through all of it.
laterâmuch laterâwhen his breathing evens out and the tears stop coming, he doesnât apologize, not because he isnât embarrassed but because your relationship has never made room for shame like that, because you have built something between you that can hold the unflattering parts of being human without trying to exile them. he just lies there, heavy and exhausted, letting himself be held, and that is vulnerability for megumi: not words, not confessionals, not grand declarations; simply allowing someone to witness him without retreating, allowing someone to remain close even when he is not fine.
you are stoic too. the two of you are not opposites that balance each other like a neat equation; you are similar weights moving together through the same storm, your difference resting in the small fact that youâve learned how to name your feelings a little better, not dramatically, not poetically, just enough to keep them from rotting inside you where they would turn bitter. you can say âi miss themâ without choking. you can admit âiâm lonelyâ without treating it like a flaw carved into your character.
it happens early, because you donât want to build a life on pretending youâre fine, and one night youâre sitting at your table, late and tired, after a phone call that wasnât really a phone call so much as a reminder of absence, of people you no longer have or never truly had, of how complicated family can be when it is missing pieces, and the loneliness slips out of you without permission, quiet and sharp.
megumi notices the shift before you speak. he always does. he can read a room like itâs a curse he needs to exorcise.
âwhat is it?â he asks, voice flat in that way thatâs meant to be gentle but comes out blunt, because softness wasnât a language he was taught.
you could brush it off. you could say ânothing.â but with megumi, ânothingâ is a lie that creates distance, and neither of you are good at distance, not when youâve built your love out of understanding rather than performance.
so you say it simply: âI was thinking about my family.â
he goes quiet. his eyes flick to you, then away, like heâs searching for the correct response on a shelf that never existed for him, and he isnât naturally comforting, isnât fluent in soothing phrases, doesnât wrap things in pretty languageâbut he tries, because with you he is always trying, even when he pretends he isnât.
he stands and gets you water without asking. he sets it down close enough that it feels like care rather than a task. he sits near you, not crowding, just present, and his knee bumps yours once, a small physical acknowledgment that heâs here, that heâs not leaving. you try to laugh it off and fail. your throat tightens. tears show up like theyâve been waiting for permission.
megumi stiffens for half a second, not because your tears annoy him, but because he hates that youâre hurting and he doesnât know how to take it away; his hand hovers, indecisive, then settles on your shoulder with tentative pressure, a touch that says more than any sentence could.
âyou donât have to talk,â he says after a moment, and though the words are simple thereâs an unspoken promise underneath themâbut I'm here if you want toâand it means everything because it is offered without demand.
you lean into his touch. the tears come quietly. you donât make a scene. you donât want to be seen that way. you just want to be understood.
megumiâs arm slides around you with clumsy sincerity. he doesnât pull you into a dramatic hug. he just holds you like heâs learning your shape by memory, his chin hovering above your head, awkward and careful, a boy who was never taught how to do this teaching himself anyway because you matter more than his discomfort. you donât have to explain every detail. between you, silence isnât neglect. itâs language. itâs agreement. itâs a way of saying: i understand the kind of hurt you mean, even if i donât know the exact story.
when you finally wipe your face, embarrassed in that soft human way, he doesnât tease you. he doesnât tell you to stop. he doesnât look away.
he just says, quieter, like itâs the only truth he trusts enough to offer: "I get it.â
and because itâs megumi, because he means it, because he doesnât say things he canât stand behind, those two words are more comforting than any speech.
that is the shape of your relationship: two stoic people letting each other be human without turning it into spectacle, without making grief a performance, without making love into something you have to prove. you both know sorrow is part of being alive, part of being a sorcerer, part of witnessing the world and still choosing to stay in it. you canât afford to drown in what-ifs, but you can afford to mourn, to let the dead be grieved, to let tears exist without apology. you can afford to hold each other through it and call it what it is, plain and heavy and realâlove, without sugar, without performance, without shame.
gojo satoru lives a pitiful existence. he is the strongest. the smartest. the most gifted. the one with infinity at his fingertips and the world balanced delicately in his palm. and he is unbearably alone. people orbit him. they admire him. they rely on him. they laugh at his jokes and bask in the safety he provides. but no one stands beside him without flinching at the light. except you.
when he fills silence with laughter and cheap alcohol and that blinding grin, you fill it with consistency. with routine. with warmth that doesnât burn. you donât try to outshine him. you donât worship him. you just exist steadily, like gravity. and he is addicted to that steadiness. the first time he cries in front of you, it isnât during a battle. it isnât after an injury. it isnât even when heâs physically exhausted.
itâs late. quiet. the kind of quiet that creeps in after everyone else has gone home and the performance isnât required anymore. heâs halfway through a joke when the façade cracks. heâs telling some ridiculous story, something about a mission gone wrong, exaggerating the details to make you laugh. you do laugh. of course you do. heâs actually funny. people forget that because they assume itâs just arrogance dressed up as charm.
but then the joke thins out. his smile lingers a second too long. his eyes donât quite follow it. you see it. the crack. you donât interrupt him. you let the joke land. you smile at him because it deserves to be smiled at. and then, gently, you take his hand anyway. he stills. itâs subtle, but you feel it. the invisible hum around him. infinity, always there. always separating. even when heâs sitting inches from you, heâs unreachable if he wants to be.
he starts another joke, softer this time. self-deprecating. a little sharper at the edges. you tilt your head. your thumb brushes his knuckles. âturn your infinity off, sweetheart,â you murmur, like youâre asking him to take off his shoes at the door.
he exhales a small laugh, eyes flicking nervously, like no matter how deeply and wholly heâs consumed with adoration for you, there will always be the fear of being taken advantage of. of being used and abused for the very thing that keeps him on his torturous pedestal. Â âwhat? why? afraid i'll accidentally obliterate the couch?â
you smile. you donât roll your eyes. you donât call him out. âfor five minutes,â you say calmly, âyou donât have to be the strongest.â
his jaw tightens. âyes, I do.â there it is. not playful. not exaggerated. a statement carved into bone. he can never be anything else but the strongest. that was decided for him long before he understood what it meant. who chose him to be the savior? who looked at a child and thought, yes, that one can carry everything?
you donât argue the philosophy. you donât challenge the title. you cannot change centuries old caricatures of bright blue eyes and the weight of the world on weary shoulders. âno,â you say softly. âfor five minutes, you can just be mine.â silence.
itâs intoxicating, the way he looks at you then. not amused. not flirtatious. justâŚstunned. like youâve said something he didnât know he was allowed to hear. you donât pity him. that would insult him. gojo would rather shatter than be pitied. you choose him. thereâs a difference. your hands come up, warm and steady, and cup his jaw. you donât hesitate. youâve never hesitated with him. the blindfold is already off. he doesnât wear it around you unless heâs teasing.
his infinity flickers. you feel it when it drops. the air changes. the distance disappears. and then he breaks. it isnât loud. it isnât dramatic. itâs a single breath that shudders on the way out, like his lungs have been holding something poisonous for too long.
he misses so much. he misses the childhood he never had. the softness he never received. a mother who should have protected him instead of handing him over to a legacy. he misses the boy he used to be, before power became identity. before responsibility swallowed everything. he misses suguru. that name doesnât get said out loud often. not by him. not without something splintering.
his best friend. his equal. the love of his life in whatever shape that love took. gone. twisted by his own mind. taken by ideology and tragedy and the cruel poetry of fate. gojo has always had to let things go with claw marks. everything heâs ever loved has left. he leans into your hands like a man starved. his forehead drops to your shoulder. his fingers clutch at your shirt, not desperate, just firmâlike heâs checking to make sure youâre real. and when the tears fall, theyâre hot and furious and quiet.
you donât shush him. you press your lips to his temple and whisper, âitâll be alright.â it sounds corny. you know it does. but with you, words become gospel. because you donât lie to him. ever. if you say itâll be alright, then somehow it will be. maybe not easy. maybe not painless. but survivable. and thatâs enough.
he breathes you in like oxygen. like salvation. like the universe finally decided to apologize. you are the gift he was given after everything else was taken, after every single thing heâd ever felt a pull towards was yanked from him by some cosmic form of ruthless punishment.Â
and when he lifts his head again, eyes red but clearer, thereâs something steadier in him. not because he stopped grieving. but because he didnât have to grieve alone. with you, he is still the strongest. but not for the world. for you. he would burn the sky down before letting it hurt you.
and thatâs where the danger lies. because gojo has never loved gently. he has never had something he didnât keep with violent devotion. everything heâs ever truly had left his possession with scratch marks carved into it. he does not give up easily. he will not give you up.
so when itâs your turnâwhen the world dares to bruise you even a fraction of the way it bruised himâhe feels it like a personal insult.Â
maybe you try to hide it. youâre strong in your own way. you donât crumble easily. but youâre human. and sometimes the loneliness creeps in. sometimes old wounds ache. sometimes someone says something cruel and it lodges under your skin.
he notices immediately. he teases at first. of course he does. âwhatâs this?â he murmurs, scooping you up effortlessly. âmy crybaby?â you swat at him weakly, embarrassed. but your eyes are glossy. his grin softens.
he hates that something hurt you. despises it. his jaw sets in that same tight line from earlier. the strongest sorcerer alive, and yet he cannot prevent every small cruelty of the world. so he does what he can. he shields. he wraps you in his arms, in his infinity if he must. he kisses your hair, your forehead, the corner of your eye where tears threaten to fall. âwho was it?â he asks lightly. you know the tone. playful on the surface. lethal underneath.
you shake your head. âitâs not like that.â he exhales, forcing himself to stay present instead of hunting down the problem and erasing it.
because you donât need a god right now. you need him. so he lowers his infinity without you asking this time. lets you press into him fully. lets you cry into his chest without a single barrier between you. and for once, he doesnât fill the silence with jokes. he just holds you. with you, he maintains the title of the strongest. but not because the world demands it. not because he was born into it. because he chooses it.
for you, he will be unbreakable. but with you, he can afford to crack. and thatâmore than any technique, any domain, any limitless powerâis the rarest thing he possesses.
ino has always been the optimistic one. the go-lucky guy. the dependable kouhai. the one who nods eagerly, who tries harder, who believes in things maybe a little too openly. he laughs easily. he trusts easily. he admires people without shame. he did not think someone like you would ever look at him twice. when he met you, he genuinely thought he was hallucinating. some divine trick. some karmic accident. because men like himânervous, still figuring themselves out, working twice as hard to stand half as tallâdonât win the jackpot. but he did. and it terrifies him.
when he met you, there was a strange, almost dizzying moment where his brain simply refused to accept the input, as if you were an illusion produced by exhaustion, a divine trick slipped into his peripheral vision, a karmic accident that would evaporate the second he blinked too hard, because men like himânervous, still figuring themselves out, living with the constant sense that they are half a step behind, working twice as hard to stand half as tallâdo not win the jackpot, do not stumble into the kind of love that people write about and then dismiss as fantasy.
but he did. and it terrifies him, not because you frighten him, but because you feel like something too good to be allowed, like something the world will inevitably reclaim once it realizes it made a mistake, and he has spent so much of his life watching good things get taken away that he does not know how to stand in front of a miracle without bracing for the sound of it shattering.
takuma has always struggled with inadequacy, long before you, long before sorcery, long before nanamiâs quiet approval became his north star, long before he learned to measure himself against men whose shadows are long and sharp; he has always felt slightly behind, slightly less polished, slightly less extraordinary than the people around him, and even when he smiles he carries this faint, persistent ache beneath the grin, a fear that if he stops movingâif he stops provingâeverything he has will slip through his fingers.
and then you chose him. you, who are steady and sure and bright in a way that doesnât demand attention but commands it anyway. he feels like he should have had to bleed for that.
the first time he cries in front of you, it is not because of any overwhelming sadness. no, itâs because you love him too easily. which is maybe overwhelmingly sad, in its own right. heâs pacing when it happens. hands running through his hair, talking too fast, laughing in the wrong places.
âyou know, itâs kinda crazy,â he says, grin strained. âlike, this shouldnât even be happening. you and me? thatâsâ thatâs wild.â
youâre sitting on the edge of the bed, watching him with that patient expression that always makes him feel seen in ways that scare him. god, you must stop looking at him like that if you want him to maintain semblance of practicalityâŚnot that he began with much of that. âtakuma,â you say gently.
he waves it off. âno, no, I mean it. I justâI've had to work for everything, you know? grades. missions. respect. even nanami-senpai didnât just hand it to me. I had to earn it.â his voice cracks on the last word. earn. love shouldnât be this simple. it shouldnât justâŚexist. it shouldnât be handed to him like a gift he didnât bleed for. his pacing slows. his breathing grows uneven. âwhat if I mess it up?â he blurts. âwhat if I'm notâI donât know. enough?â
there it is. the aching, burning rot at the center of him. not arrogance. not entitlement. just fear that heâs borrowed something too precious and eventually it will be reclaimed. he drops to his knees in front of you before he even realizes heâs done it. not dramatically. not theatrically. just instinct. like heâs apologizing for something he hasnât done yet. "I swear I'll work harder,â he says, eyes glossy. "I'll be better. I'll get stronger. iâllâiâll deserve you.â
tears spill over, sudden and humiliating in his mind. he scrubs at them angrily, embarrassed. heâs done nothing wrong. and yet he looks like heâs confessing to a crime. you donât let him stay there. you slide off the bed immediately and kneel with him. your hands come up, firm but gentle, gripping his arms and pulling him upright. âtakuma,â you say, and thereâs no amusement in it. no indulgence. just clarity. you cradle his face between your palms and kiss away one of the stray tears before he can wipe it.
"I'm not with you because youâre an accomplished sorcerer,â you tell him. ânot because youâre nanamiâs best student. not because youâre strong.â he tries to protest. all of those things matter. they have to matter. because why the fuck else would you stoop to his level? âthey are meaningful,â you continue. âbut theyâre not why.â
his breathing stutters.
"I love you because youâre kind,â you say. âbecause youâre compassionate. because youâve never given up on anything. because when things get hard, you donât run.â his lips tremble. âyou donât have to earn me,â you whisper. âlove isnât a prize you fight for. itâs a gift. and I'm going to keep giving it to you. so youâll have to get used to it.â you smile.Â
full-bodied sobbing into your shoulder as if something in him finally stopped bracing for impact, as if his muscles have been locked in anticipation for years and your steadiness finally gave them permission to unclench. he clings, shaking, and you hold him without rushing, without teasing, without turning his vulnerability into something cute or small; you smooth a hand over his hair and let him feel the steadiness of you, because you are grounding in a way he never learned to be for himself, and you stay there long enough for his tears to slow, long enough for his breathing to return to him, long enough for him to realize, in the quiet aftermath, that you are still here, that you have not recoiled, that love did not vanish the moment he showed you the trembling core of his fear.
it takes time, teaching him that love is not conditional on performance, that he doesnât have to bleed to deserve softness, that you will not disappear the second he stumbles, that the world does not always take and take and take until there is nothing left; it takes time, and patience, and repeated proof, because takuma has fought for everything else in his life and his body has learned to anticipate the cost of wanting.
He should not have to fight for you.
and then thereâs you. youâre composed in a way that calms him. you think before you speak. you donât spiral easily. you hold your emotions like precious things instead of weapons. when you cry, itâs rarely dramatic. itâs quiet. itâs exhaustion. itâs the world being heavy in small, relentless ways.
the first time it happens, he panics. youâre sitting beside him, shoulders shaking just slightly, tears sliding down your face in that silent way that hurts more than wailing ever could. his brain short-circuits.
âheyâ hey, what happened?â he asks immediately, hands hovering awkwardly. âdid someoneâ did Iâ?âÂ
you shake your head quickly. âno. itâs justâŚa lot. everything, all at once.â thatâs worse somehow. he canât punch âa lot.â he canât exorcise it. he canât get nanami to write it a strongly worded email in inoâs behalf.Â
he kneels in front of you instinctively this time, mirroring the position he once took in his own insecurity. but he doesnât grovel. he just looks at you like youâre something precious and fragile and terrifyingly important. "I'm not great at this,â he admits, voice small.
you let out a watery laugh. âthatâs okay, takuma.â he huffs softly at that, relieved youâre still you. he gathers you into his arms, a little clumsy, a little too tight at first. you adjust against him without complaint, curling instinctively into his chest like your body already knows what your mind sometimes forgets:
ino makes it better. even when the world doesnât make sense. even when nothing feels okay. his hand rubs circles into your back, uneven but earnest. he presses his cheek to the top of your head. "I donât always know what to say,â he confesses quietly.
you nod against him. you donât need poetry. you donât need eloquence. after a long moment, he says the only thing he fully believes. âeverythingâs going to be okay in the end.â his voice wavers slightly, but the conviction is there. âso if itâs not okay,â he adds, swallowing hard, âthat just means itâs not the end yet.â
you tighten your grip on him because it hurts, the sweetness of that faith, and it comforts you at the same time, because he is not offering you a solution, he is offering you endurance, a promise that he will stay until the moment passes, until the breath returns, until you can stand again.
takuma stumbles over comfort sometimes. he fumbles his words. half the time he isnât entirely sure what the correct response is. but he never leaves. he never pulls away from your tears the way he once feared you would from his. he stays with an awkward smile and steady arms and warmth pressed against you like a vow, and in the quiet that follows, when you curl into him trusting and instinctive and sure, you can feel something shift inside him, a small rearranging of the old, frightened architecture that once insisted love must be purchased with pain.
maybe love isnât something he has to earn. maybe itâs just something youâve decided to give him, for reasons not entirely known to him.Â
chosoâs problem is that he wants something he doesnât believe he deserves. normal. not ânormalâ like small talk and crowded trains and forgetting your keys on the counterâthough he wants that too, in this aching, hungry way. normal like guilt-free happiness. normal like waking up and not feeling the weight of a century and a half on his ribs. normal like smiling and believing it means something good instead of something stolen.
he watches humans the way a person watches a language they can almost understand. he watches yuujiâs open heart, the way he forgives too fast and loves too big. he watches gojoâs ridiculous bravado, the way he hides loneliness behind brightness like itâs a trick heâs perfected. choso doesnât envy their power. he envies their ease. their right to be here. because choso is a contradiction that still hurts to hold. a 150-year-old curse that learned to be human in the worst possible way. a creature made from grief and blood and resentment, now carrying a new, bewildering thing in his chest: tenderness. wanting. shame. hope.
he wants to reconcile the curse side with the human side so badly it makes him sick sometimes. like two truths are fighting for space in the same body. and he is certain heâll fail. he is certain he will never get to be happy without paying for it. he is certain the world will always look at him and see a monster first. but then you look at him like he is this achingly beautiful thing. your own precious frankenstein.Â
you are, infuriatingly, unbearably human. soft and bright in a way that doesnât feel naive. not fragileâjust warm. like love, condensed into a person who knows how to touch the world without bruising it. you say his name like it belongs to him. you look at him like he is not a mistake.Â
you arenât even dating yet when you see him cry for the first time. it happens in a quiet momentâone of those accidental spaces between missions and chaos, where nothing demands his attention except the inside of his own head. youâre in the kitchen, maybe. the room is dim, not romantic, just tired. the kind of hour where everyoneâs pretending the world isnât as cruel as it is.
thereâs no shame attached to it. no flinch. no instinct to hide his face or turn away. he doesnât even seem to understand that heâs âsupposedâ to swallow it down. the tears come because something inside him swells too quickly and has nowhere else to go.
he hasnât been trained by some patriarchal system to believe that âbig boys donât cry.â. he hasnât absorbed those quiet rules about strength meaning silence. emotion, to him, is simply something that happens. it rises. it spills. it passes.
he doesnât cry over everything. heâs still composed most of the time, still steady in that heavy, grounded way he carries himself. but when it hits himâwhen guilt or tenderness or confusion spikes too sharplyâhis body responds without negotiation.
choso is standing very still. too still. heâs been like that all evening: hovering near the walls, hands clasped like heâs keeping them from doing something terrible, eyes fixed on nothing. you try not to crowd him. youâve learned that chosoâs silence isnât coldness. itâs overwhelm. he is always balancingâone wrong tilt and he thinks heâll topple back into the person he used to be. âdo you want tea?â you ask, casual, like youâre offering something normal on purpose.
he nods. his throat works around the word. âyes.â the way he says it is careful, like heâs practicing.
you make the tea. you do it slowly. you narrate small things sometimesâwater boiling, the smell, the steamâbecause youâve noticed it helps him. it anchors him. it reminds him heâs here, now, in this moment, not back there with blood on his hands and a masterâs voice in his ears.
you set the cup down in front of him, but he doesnât drink it. his fingers hover over the ceramic, then retract as if the warmth burns. his shoulders rise slightly. his breathing grows uneven. you watch the guilt take shape on his face the way clouds gather before a storm.
âchoso,â you say, gently. not a question. just his name.
his eyes flick to you, then away. he looks like a man trying to swallow something sharp. âIâŚâ he starts. stops. starts again. "I donât know how toâŚbe.â it hits you in the chest, that sentence. because itâs so simple. and so devastating. he doesnât just mean âbeâ like exist. he means be like a person. be like someone who can sit in a room without thinking about the people heâs hurt. be like someone who can accept kindness without wondering what it costs. "I have doneâŚâ his voice frays. âtoo much.â
you donât correct him immediately. you donât rush to soothe. you let him speak because he needs it. he needs the truth in the air. "I was with him,â he continues, and you both know he means kenjaku. the name itself makes the room colder. "I believed things. I followed. I hurt people.â his hands curl into fists at his sides. his jaw tightens. his eyes shine, suddenly, and he looks almost startled by itâas if he didnât expect his body to betray him like that.
"I cannot forgive myself,â he whispers. and then the tears come. not like a performance. not like an apology. just a physical overflow of emotion that he hasnât learned how to dam yet. chosoâs crying is big. heavy. honest. his face barely changesâstill serious, still stern in that natural way of hisâbut the tears keep falling, slipping down his cheeks as if gravity has decided to be cruel. he blinks hard, embarrassed. his shoulders hunch as if he can make himself smaller. you donât let him.
you stand and cross the room without hesitation, even though heâs triple your size and built like something that shouldnât fit inside ordinary doorways. you donât think about danger. you donât think about what he used to be. you think about what he is right now: a man overwhelmed by the idea that he might be irredeemable. you gather him into your arms like itâs the most natural thing in the world. choso stiffens at first, startled. heâs still learning what touch means when it isnât violence. still learning that being held isnât being restrained.
you tuck his head under your chin, adjust your stance so you can actually keep him there, and begin to rock him side to side. small. steady. rhythmic. like youâve done it a hundred times for people you loved. because you have.
and you feel awful for him, so genuinely, so deeply, that any romantic hesitation disappears. this isnât about âwhat are we?â this is about âyou are hurting and I wonât let you do it alone.â
his hands hover, awkward, unsure where to go. then, slowly, they come up and clutch the back of your shirt like heâs afraid youâll vanish if he doesnât hold on. his breathing shakes. "I am evil,â he says into your shoulder, muffled.
you pull back just enough to look at him. your hands come up to his cheeks. you wipe the tears away with your thumbs like itâs normal, like thereâs no disgust in you, no fear, no distance.
âno,â you say, firm. âthatâs not how this works, choso. you made mistakes.â
his brows knit, miserable. âhow can you know?â because you see him. thatâs the answer. because he cries for what heâs done. because he wants to be good so badly it hurts him. because monsters donât ask for normal. they donât ache for kindness. they donât grieve. but you donât give him a lecture. choso doesnât need a speech. he needs something simpler and stronger.
you kiss his forehead. he freezes at the contact, eyes wide, like he canât compute tenderness being offered so freely. you smile at his frown, softening it with nothing but warmth. âyou are trying,â you tell him. âevery day. I see it.â he trembles, and the tears return, new ones replacing the ones you just wiped away. his face presses back into the curve of your neck like heâs seeking shelter.
and the miraculous partâthe part that will always undo himâis how easily you dismantle his self-doubt with simple movements. no dramatic declarations. no grand forgiveness ceremony. just touch. just presence. just quiet truth repeated until it starts to stick. eventually his crying slows. his breathing evens out. his grip loosens, but he doesnât let go completely. you keep rocking him anyway. because with you, he isnât curse or human. with you, he is just choso. just yours. and that âyoursâ doesnât mean possession. it means belonging. it means he can exist in a space where he doesnât have to choose between halves of himself, because you arenât asking him to be pure. youâre asking him to be honest.
that night changes something between you, even if neither of you names it. because when you hold someone through their worst self-perception, itâs intimate. itâs a kind of closeness that bypasses romance and lands somewhere deeper: trust.
when you cry, it looks different.
choso gravitates toward someone emotionally stronger than him for a reason. he feels things fast and hard, and heâs still learning where to put them. if you were both emotional wrecks all the time, the relationship would tip into chaos. so youâre steadier. you hold things back. youâve been conditionedâby family, by society, by survivalâto think emotion is embarrassing. that tears are messy. that vulnerability makes you a burden.
choso hasnât reached that kind of âhumanityâ yet, the part where the world teaches you to be ashamed of your own heart.
to him, emotion is normal. inconvenient, maybe. overwhelming, sometimes. but normal. so when your eyes gloss over and you try to blink it away, he notices immediately, as if your sadness is a sound only he can hear.
he tries to mimic you at firstâsmiling, kind, calmâbecause he thinks thatâs what you want. he thinks you want steadiness the way you give it to him. but heâs clumsy with it. his hand hovers, uncertain. his brows draw together. heâs not quite like you. you just always seem to know the exact right thing to say, and right now, his mouth is dry and heâs looking nervously around the room, searching for the correct words and finding but none.Â
so he doesnât force them. instead, he listens. chosoâs listening is intense. devotional. he sits perfectly still, wide eyes fixed on your face like every word you say matters because it comes from you. he doesnât check his phone. he doesnât interrupt. he doesnât rush you. he lets silence exist between your sentences without trying to fill it.
and you, in his presence, canât perform the way you do for everyone else. your crying is slow, hiccuping weepingâone tear at a time. quiet and stubborn and meaningful. the kind of crying that happens when youâve held things in for too long and your body finally insists on release.
choso doesnât tease. he is so sincere it almost hurts. he reaches for you carefully, like heâs learned how precious you are, like heâs afraid of touching wrong. his palm settles on your cheek, thumb brushing away a tear with reverence. âit is alright,â he says, and he means it in the simplest way: you are allowed to feel this. he pulls you into his chest. itâs warm there. safe. his heartbeat is steady, grounding. he holds you like heâs memorizing the weight of you.
and you donât like crying in front of himânot because he reacts badly, but because you want to shield him from the evil of the world. you want to keep the ugliness out of his reach. you want him to stay soft. to stay hopeful. to not learn the kind of bitterness youâve had to learn. so you hide things. that might be the flaw in your relationship: you tuck the sharp edges away. you swallow the bad news. you downplay the cruelty. because you think youâre protecting him.
but choso, for all his emotional openness, isnât stupid. he can feel when youâre holding something back. he can sense it in the way your smile doesnât quite reach your eyes, in the way your shoulders stay tense even when you say youâre fine.
and one dayâgently, sincerelyâhe will ask you to let him hold you the way you hold him. because he wants you to be real. because if you can look at himâcurse-made-flesh, blood-stained history, guilt in his bonesâand still gather him into your arms without hesitationâŚthen surely you can let him do the same for you. and thatâs the reconciliation heâs been searching for all along. âhuman versus curse,â or âgood versus evil,â doesnât matter in the slightest when itâs still âhim versus you.â so heâll do what he can to get you two on the same team.Â
nanami is a gentle man living inside a brutal structure, which has taught him very little, but if it has taught him anything, it is that gentleness wonât get him very far. there is a version of himâsomewhere, in some kinder universeâwhere his professionalism and his warmth exist without conflict. where he can come home at a reasonable hour. where he is not calculating risk percentages in the back of his mind while pouring a drink. where teenagers are not sent into combat by men who sit safely behind polished desks.
but not here. here, he chooses the hard exterior most days. the suit. the glasses. the clipped tone. the efficient movements. he does not have the luxury of being soft in a system that eats the soft first. he eats. he sleeps. he breathes. he works. he is so tired.
when he comes home that night, you can tell before he says anything. thereâs something heavier in the way he sets his briefcase down. the knot of his tie is tighter than usual. his shoulders sit high, like theyâve been bracing for hours and forgot how to lower.
you donât ask him what happened. you never ask like that. he loosens his tie slowly. removes his glasses. rubs the bridge of his nose. his composure is intact. it always is. but there are fractures in it.
he sits at the edge of the couch, elbows on his knees. hands clasped. staring at nothing. the room is quiet except for the faint hum of the refrigerator. you move toward him without ceremony. sit beside him. close enough to touch, but not touching yet. he inhales. ânanamin,â you say gently.
his jaw tightens at the sound of his name. you rarely use it when youâre concerned. it lands differently. "I am fine,â he replies automatically. you donât argue. you donât call him out. you just reach over and place your hand on the back of his neck. he freezes. the contact is simple. warm. familiar. but it cracks something. his breathing shifts. just slightly.
he thinks of himself as a teenager sometimes. of the boy who still believed the system could be reformed from within. of haibaraâs grin. of blood soaking into pavement that should never have seen it. he thinks of how young he was when he was handed responsibility that should have belonged to grown men. he thinks of the young ones now. he thinks of those disgusting pigs who hide behind quartz walls and send optimistic 16 year old children to bear the weight of jujutsu society on their prepubescent shoulders, meaning sending them off to slaughter. he sees it clearly. but clarity does not equal freedom.Â
a single tear slips down his face. he does not sob. he does not crumble. it is controlled, contained, precise. one tear, then another. and immediatelyâimmediatelyâhe turns his head away from you. "I apologize,â he murmurs, voice low. âthis isâunbecoming.â
your hand tightens at his neck. âno,â you say.
he tries again. âyou should not have toââ
"I will do a lot of things for you, nanamin,â you interrupt softly, but there is steel under it. "I will listen to you hurt. I will listen to you cry. I will let you be burdened by grief in front of me.â he goes still. âbut I will not listen to you apologize. do you understand me?â
your gaze doesnât waver. it is honest and disarming and steady in a way that leaves him nowhere to hide. he swallows. he wants to apologize anyway. for being heavy. for being exhausted. for not being brighter. for not being the version of himself that exists in kinder worlds. he nods instead.
nanami is not emotionally stunted. he knows exactly what he feels. he just resents that he feels it. resents that grief still grips him years later. resents that haibaraâs face hasnât blurred with time. you slide closer and press your forehead gently to his temple. he exhales. itâs shaky.
he hasnât allowed himself to mourn properly in years. there was always another mission. another responsibility. another report to file. grief became something folded and tucked away like an old letter he didnât have time to read. you canât force that open. you donât try. you just stay.
your hand moves from his neck to his jaw. your thumb catches another tear before it falls. he closes his eyes. "I am justâŚtired,â he admits quietly. itâs the most honest thing heâs said all day.Â
"I know,â you whisper. he leans into you then, just slightly. not collapsing. not surrendering entirely. but allowing.
you donât talk about fixing the system. you donât talk about quitting. you donât talk about âone day itâll be different.â you offer him something smaller and more immediate. rest. he lets a few more tears fall. no dramatics. no shaking sobs. just controlled, dignified grief.
you hold it like it belongs there. you donât expect him to unpack decades of restraint tonight. you donât expect him to bare his soul in some cinematic confession. thatâs not who he is. you expect him to let you help. and he does.
nanami is, in this one particular way, a hypocrite of the most human variety, because although your tears carve something raw and immediate through the center of his chestâalthough they ignite in him a sharp, almost violent protectiveness that makes his jaw tighten and his shoulders square as if the world itself has committed an offense against something sacredâthere is, beneath that ache, something else, something far less noble and far more intimate: he loves when you cry.
he would never phrase it that way. he would bristle at the accusation. he would call it concern, instinct, responsibility. and those things are true. but there is another truth coiled underneath them, quiet and undeniable.
there are few things more intoxicating than being wanted.
and only one more intoxicating than that: being needed. nanami needs to be needed by you.
it settles into him like a slow-burning liquor, rich and golden and dangerous in its warmth. the moment your composure fractures and your eyes gloss over and your voiceâusually so measured, so carefulâsoftens into that small, trembling murmur of ânami,â something inside him gives way with a force that almost embarrasses him in its intensity.
he crumbles. not outwardly, not in the way he does when he finally allows himself to weep in the privacy of dim rooms and tightly drawn curtains. his crumbling is inward, a swift and total surrender to the gravity of you. instantly he is moving, crossing the space between you with the kind of decisive urgency he brings to battlefields, except this time there is no calculation, no assessment of cursed energy or terrainâonly you, and the fragile shine of tears caught in your lashes.
he gathers you without hesitation, one arm firm around your shoulders, the other settling at the small of your back, drawing you into him as though the world might attempt to steal you if he does not anchor you close enough. his body curves around yours instinctively, shielding, enclosing, creating a perimeter of warmth and steadiness that no cruelty is permitted to breach.
his hands, despite their strength, are reverent.
he wipes your tears with the pads of his thumbs, slow and deliberate, as though each one matters, as though none of them are trivial or excessive or embarrassing. his voice lowers when he speaks to you, a timbre reserved for this and only this, threaded with praise that is never hollow.
âyouâre alright,â he murmurs. âyouâve carried more than anyone should. let me handle this.â
he knows precisely how you need to be comforted. it is almost unfair. he senses when you require gentleness and when you require firmness, when you need to be reminded of your resilience and when you need permission to lay it down. he tells you not to be ashamed of crying, not to hide your face, not to apologize for taking up emotional space. he smooths your hair back from your forehead, presses a kiss there with such unguarded tenderness that it borders on devotion.
there is something faintly indulgent in the way he soothes you, something that edges toward babying, toward a careful diminishment of the harshness around you so that you can exist, for a moment, smaller and softer and unburdened. the line between protection and possession blurs, thin and shifting, and perhaps if you examined it too closely you might find it troubling.
but you do not examine it. because he is so very good at this. he is meticulous even in comfort, attentive in a way that feels studied and sacred. he watches your breathing until it evens out, adjusts his hold when your shoulders shake, murmurs reassurances that settle into your bones. you do not feel belittled. you feel cherished. guarded. chosen. and it is here, in this quiet cocoon of his making, that the hypocrisy reveals itself in its full, aching shape. he encourages you not to be embarrassed by your tears, to let him hold the weight, to allow yourself to be handled and steadied and sheltered without guilt.
yet he will not grant himself the same grace. he will not lean into your chest and whisper that he is tired. he will not let his voice fracture the way yours does. he will wipe his own tears away before they fall and call it composure. there is something almost tragic in that.
he does not see it as denial. he sees it as duty. as structure. as the proper order of things. he was builtâby culture, by expectation, by the ruthless politics of jujutsuâto be the wall, not the one who leans against it. he has been told, implicitly and explicitly, that strength is silent, that protection flows in one direction. and so he pours himself into you without reservation while hoarding his own grief behind closed doors.
but he is trying. you can feel it in the slight hesitation before he withdraws from your embrace, as if part of him wants to remain there longer. you see it in the way his fingers linger at your waist after you have stopped crying, as though he is memorizing the permission of that closeness. you hear it in the breath he releases against your hair, heavy and almost unsteady, betraying the fact that comforting you does not drain himâit fills him, steadies him, gives him something pure and uncomplicated in a world otherwise mired in moral compromise.
being needed anchors him.
yuuji itadori is sweet sixteen in a way that feels almost anachronistic in a world that eats innocence like itâs bored of chewing, and when people look at him they see the brightness firstâthe easy grin, the loud laugh, the reckless generosity of a boy who will give you his last bite of food and then insist he isnât hungry anywayâbut you, because you are the one closest to him, because you have watched him when the hallway lights are off and the bravado has nothing to feed on, you know how deliberate that brightness can be, how often it is chosen on purpose, how much willpower it takes to keep his face soft when his head is full of funerals.
he is emotionally healthy, in a rare, almost miraculous way. he names what he feels more easily than most grown men. he apologizes without pride. he forgives without keeping score. he looks at the people he loves as if they are an answer to a question he never stops asking. he cries at movies. he laughs too hard at dumb jokes. he says "I missed youâ like itâs a normal, ordinary thing to admit, and he means it every time. he is tuned to his own heart with a kind of tender precision.
and he has also seen death so closely that it has kissed his cheek. he has felt the heat of curses, the way they twist the air around them, the way a person can be alive one second and gone the next, reduced to aftermath and silence and the sickening knowledge that the world does not pause to mourn. he knows what a curse can do to someoneâs body. he knows what it can do to a mind. he knows what it can do to a future. he carries that knowledge behind his teeth, smiling through it, swallowing it back down when it rises, because there is always another day and another mission and another person who needs him to be steady.
he does it well, too. he makes the best of things with an almost painful sincerity. he teases megumi until megumi looks like heâs trying not to smile. he charms nobara into laughter even when sheâs furious. he drives gojo insane in that affectionate, unkillable way only yuuji seems capable of. he is a puppy-dog boyfriend with soft hands and starry eyes, the kind who remembers what you like without announcing that he remembered, the kind who gives you the first sip of his drink and watches your face while you taste it, the kind who says your name like itâs his favorite word.
he is happy, tooâhe really is, as happy as he can beâbecause happiness for him isnât a grand promise, itâs a stubborn act of rebellion, itâs a small bright flame cupped between his palms while the wind screams to put it out. he has a death sentence looming larger and larger over his head with every one of sukunaâs fingers he swallows, with every step he takes deeper into a world that was never meant to be survivable, and he still laughs, still reaches for you, still says, with earnest conviction that makes you want to weep, âweâll be okay.â
sometimes you believe him. sometimes you donât. and then there are nights when the dam breaks.
it isnât cinematic. it isnât poetic. itâs the sudden, brutal collapse of a boy who has been holding too much for too long because he is strong in the way that breaks you slowly, because he is kind in a way that leaves him exposed, because he has carried grief like a backpack filled with stones and never once asked anyone to take a strap.
he comes to you like he always does, smiling, talking too fast, trying to keep the mood lightâsomething about how gojo said something ridiculous, how megumiâs face did that thing it always does when heâs annoyed, how maybe you should try that ramen place again because last time you didnât get enough toppingsâand you listen, you smile, you let him bring the warmth into the room because you love him, because his joy is contagious, because you have learned to accept the good moments when they arrive.
but you see it, the slight tremor underneath his cheer, the way his eyes donât quite match the grin, the way his hands fidget once he thinks you arenât watching, the way his shoulders are braced as if he expects the floor to drop out. âyuuji,â you say softly.
he pauses. âwhat?â he answers, still smiling, still trying.
you donât push. you donât demand. you just step closer and reach for his wrist, your fingers closing around it with that gentle certainty that always makes him stop pretending, because you donât grab him like heâs running away, you hold him like youâre giving him permission to land.
he swallows, hard. his throat works around something sharp, and then it all comes at once. the tears donât spill. they rupture.
his face crumples with a force that makes your chest constrict. he doesnât ease into it. he breaks into your arms like his body has finally decided it cannot carry this alone, like the grief has been clawing at his ribs for months and found a weak seam. he folds forward, hands clutching at your shirt, and the sob that tears out of him is so deep it sounds like it was dragged up from the bottom of his lungs, from a place where he has been keeping all the things he refuses to say out loud.
it isnât soft. it isnât pretty. itâs raw, full-bodied, broken sobs that shake him so hard you can feel it in your bones, like he is being wrung out by the sheer unfairness of being alive and also already halfway dead.
you hold him as tightly as you can, arms locked around his shoulders, one hand pressed to the back of his head, fingers threading through his hair like you can anchor him by touch alone. your mouth finds his temple. your cheek presses to his. your heartbeat is the only steady rhythm in the room, and you offer it to him like a rope.
âyouâre alright,â you murmur, over and over, because language is useless in the face of this kind of grief and repetition is sometimes the only spell that works. âyouâre alright. youâre alright. I've got you. I've got you.â
he makes a sound like heâs trying to speak and failing. âmy grandpa,â he chokes, and itâs not even a full sentence, just the name of the wound, the shape of the first loss, the first person who told him to help people and then left him alone with the instruction like it was a gift and a curse at the same time.
his hands tighten, desperate. âI'mâ I'm going toââ he canât finish it. his breathing collapses. "I'm going to die.â the words hit the air like a gunshot. you donât correct him. you donât tell him not to say that. you donât lie. you canât afford lies with yuuji; he tastes dishonesty like bitterness.
so you simply hold him through the truth of it, through the terror of it, through the cruelty of it, and you keep murmuring the only thing that seems to cut through the fog heâs trapped in. âyouâre here,â you whisper. âyouâre here with me. breathe. breathe, baby. come back. come back.â
his sobbing spikes when you say âbaby,â as if the softness of it hurts, as if being loved like this is both salvation and torture, because sometimes your love feels like the only clean thing left in a godforsaken existence that keeps demanding blood from children and calling it necessary. he cries harder, clinging to you as if you are the last good thing on earth, and you feel yourself splinter a little more with each sound, because you love him so much it frightens you, because you canât bear the idea of a world without him in it, because you are powerless in ways that make you furious.
you croon into his hair until his breathing begins to slow, until the sobs lose their jagged edge and soften into shaky inhales, until the shaking eases just enough that he can lift his head and look at you with red-rimmed eyes and a face so open it is almost unbearable to witness.
thereâs no shame in him. not with you. only exhaustion, and love, and the quiet devastation of a boy who has been brave too long. he lets you wipe his tears. he lets you hold his face. he leans into your hands like he belongs there.
and when he finally calms, when he finally drifts back from that ledge and sinks into your arms with a weight that feels like trust, he breathes out a whisper that barely reaches your ear. âthank you.â it breaks you again, softly, from the inside, the way gratitude from someone like him always does.
you kiss his forehead and hold him until he sleeps, until his lashes rest against his cheeks, still damp, until his fingers relax their grip on your shirt as if his body has decided, for now, that it is safe to stop fighting. sometimes, even after heâs asleep, you keep holding him anyway, because letting go feels like tempting fate. because loving yuuji means learning how to cradle joy and grief in the same hands.
because loving yuuji means smiling through tears and crying through laughter and never quite knowing which one will arrive first. and then thereâs you. you are his world in a way that frightens him.
he tells himself itâs fine, that itâs normal, that people love their girlfriends and worry about them and want them safe. he repeats it like a mantra because the alternative is admitting how feral it makes him feel when youâre hurt, how quickly something dark and sharp rises in his chest when the light in your eyes dims, because he understands curses and cruelty too well, because he knows how easily the world bruises soft things.
he doesnât want you in the jujutsu world. he wants you far away from it, untouched by the machinery of it, unclaimed by its politics and blood and stupid hierarchies. he tells you whatâs happening anywayâhe canât keep secrets from you, not reallyâso youâre informed, always, but he draws a line around you like a boundary made of his own body.
he wants you to have nothing to do with it. he wants your hands clean. he wants your life ordinary. he wants you safe in a way that is almost a religion to him, the way he worships your safety.
so when you cry, he reacts like a boy who has learned that safety is fragile and time is a thief. he doesnât ask twenty questions. he doesnât demand explanations the moment your face breaks open. he comes to you quickly and quietly, and his gentleness is so deliberate it feels like heâs handling something priceless.
âhey,â he says, voice low. âcome here.â he takes you by the hand and guides you toward his dorm like itâs the most natural thing in the world, like safety is a destination he can lead you to if he just keeps walking. his palm is warm around yours. his steps are careful, purposeful. he glances around the hallway as if looking for threats, even though the threats in your life are not curses and claws but words and loneliness and the thousand small hurts that come with being human.
he doesnât like other people seeing you vulnerable. it feels possessive in a way he doesnât have language for yet. itâs his job, his responsibility, his sacred duty to be the one you fall apart with, because he cannot stand the thought of the world taking pieces of you while he watches helplessly.
once the door is closed, once youâre inside that small room that smells faintly like detergent and cheap snacks and yuujiâs constant presence, he softens completely. he sits you down, not ordering, just guiding. he crouches in front of you so he can see your face, so he can be eye-level, so he doesnât loom, so you donât feel swallowed.
he doesnât make you talk. he knows that part is hard. he knows words can snag in your throat and make everything worse. so he offers you the simplest comfort first: his attention, his warmth, his steady presence that says you are not alone in this, not for one second.
he wipes your tears with his sleeve in a clumsy, affectionate motion that makes you laugh even as your face is wet, and he smiles at you like heâs relieved to see any piece of you return. âokay,â he whispers, as if speaking to both of you. âokay. weâve got time. justâŚstay with me.â
if you do speak, he listens like every word matters. if you donât, he still stays. he gathers you into his arms, tucks your head under his chin, and holds you with the same fierce tenderness he brings to everything he loves, like he is trying to shield you from emotional damage the way he would shield you from teeth and claws.
sometimes his hands shake a little when you cry. he hates that he canât fix it. he hates that he canât punch sadness the way he punches curses. he hates that life hurts you and he canât intercept every blow. so he does what he can. he holds you. he keeps you close. he brings you into the safest space he can offer and makes himself the walls around it, soft on the inside, sturdy on the outside.
and if you lean into him, if you let your face press into his shoulder, if you whisper his name in that small, broken voice, he closes his eyes like heâs memorizing the feeling, like heâs imprinting on you the way a puppy does, like love is the only thing he has that feels bigger than the fear.
he is sweet. he is loving. he is trying so hard. he is happy when he can be. and sometimes, in the quiet after the crying, when your breathing steadies and his hands stop trembling, he rests his cheek against your hair and smiles faintly, not because everything is okay, not because the death sentence has disappeared, not because the world has suddenly become kind, but because you are here.
because he is here. because for this moment, in this small room, in his arms, the apocalypse is held back by nothing more than devotion, and somehow, against all odds, that devotion is enough to let both of you breathe.

chapter synopsis:
in his dreams, you wake up in his arms.
word count: ~1.5k; tws: none here! but if anything triggers you, please let me know. I'll change the warnings for you!
short a/n: hi everyone, I'm back! I'm so sorry this and chapter 10 took so long-- I explained this on ao3 as well but I basically got busier with life, because I want to get into a good uni but have less time to prepare than my peers. this companion piece is meant to be read right before you read chapter 10, which I'm posting at the same time as this (to apologise for the long wait!). it happens right after the events of chapter 9, and is from megumi's point of view. I just want to thank everyone who's still reading-- I always take a lot of time to write, and chapter 10 and 11 were the ones that took me the longest (they were originally meant to be one chapter, but I split it into two!)
This is a scene from his dreams: the gentle whirr of the ceiling fan echoes through the bedroom, before the alarm on your phone jingles and Megumi stirs awake. In his arms you seem to have woken up as well, and he smoothens your hair under his palm before telling you to keep restingâ itâs still early. Upon his insistence you close your eyes again, letting sleep paint you in its tranquility, and he covers the blanket over your body. Â
He gets ready first, brushing his teeth and taking a shower, then texting Tsumiki a good morning. In his dreams both of you are happy. Both of you are awake.Â
He snaps back to consciousness.Â
There was so much to tell you; every moment he had with you, he bit back his unspoken words until he damn well must have choked on them.Â
Megumi was stupid as a kid, and he still is now. Life could have thrown whatever the hell it wanted at him but all he needed to do was go back to you, and he knew youâd be there, smiling, never changing. Youâd be the same, as long as you still had that part of you whose eyes shined whenever you grinned or laid your heart bare with kindness.Â
The world is dark and bleak, for Jujutsu sorcerers and people alike. People are cruelâ lives are based on transaction, souls are driven by greed and animalistic desires, the longest-standing of creeds always grow corrupted when tainted by the most human hands. And itâs just what he has to do, fighting in battles every day and surrendering himself to a lifetime of agony just because he happened to be the unlucky swimmer his deadbeat father ruined his stranger of a mother with. He doesnât know how Gojo does it sometimes, even if he wonât admit itâ all the crosses to bear, the heaviness of the crown he wears, plastered over with a botched mask of vaguely concealed suffering and patchwork smiles.Â
Yet whenever you stood in front of him it was as if all his demons went away, dissipated by pure sunlight. With you in the world, in his lifeâ he could believe things could change for the better somehow, as if you were the one unattainable key to stopping a long-wrought prophecy.Â
And heâd think there was some meaning to being good, good like Tsumiki, who constantly kept you in mind, who laid before him because he failed to protect her, who raised and cared for him despite being a child herself. Heâd lost hope in the world when she went comatoseâ all he wanted was to bring her back.Â
But the moment he saw you again he began to have hope. You came back to him like an incipient spring at the end of winter.Â
And now he sees you, pale and feverish, unconscious in his arms, and it reminds him of tree branches only laden with snow bare of leaves. Thereâs blood running from your nose, stark contrast from your pallor and the rate at which your skin seems to be greying.Â
His head is swimmingâ you had been cold to the touch even before this and now you were colder. The way your eyes had shut seemed as if you were emulating Tsumiki on that hospital bed.Â
There is nothing, nothing to doâ heâs failed to protect you, to put a stop to your stubbornness and utter love for his sister, and know heâs paying the price by letting time pass as he struggles to breathe while thinking of how your breathing will sound once it goes on its death rattle. And he could say that this was the problem with the Good, and it is, but you wouldnât be you, the you who has him pleading with deities he does not believe in, if you werenât Good.Â
Nothing. Nothing he can do. He canât breathe. His chest hurts like itâs closing in on himself. He feels like throwing up. Blurry spots seize his vision. Is he dying now? It would make sense if he died only because you did. But he might as well just die now anyway. He canât live in a world without you in it.Â
He needs to get a hold of himself; get a damn grip he mustâve spoken aloud, so he brings you closer, closer enough that he can have his mouth on your forehead and hear your subdued breaths as they fight their way out of you. Your blood streams down from your nose, and he wishes you never had the curse of being isolated; the life you live deems that there can be none to heal the healers.Â
But he has to leave now. Even if adrenaline is the only thing compelling his legs forward, even if your breathing is steadily growing weaker and weaker. The hospital lights are usually glaring but heâs staring at them head-on without any ache in his eyes, pupils dilated. Youâre still in his arms when he leaves the building and itâs like heâs growing colder. Thereâs a churning in his stomach, blood glucose concentration heightened and his skin growing in pallor, and he needs to get you to Dr Ieiri soon if itâs the last thing he does, so he slips into the shadows and runs and runs and runs.Â
Heâs still panting by the time he reaches her office, shivering as he practically blabbers, struggling to form coherent sentences.Â
âMegumi! Hey! Kid! Calm down,â she commands, cigarette falling from her mouth, âPut her on the table first. Okay? Now, take a deep breath. Sheâll be fine. Keep your mind where your feet are.âÂ
âShe fell when she touched Tsumikiââ he chokes out, âWe wentâ it was my faultâ IââÂ
âBreathe,â Dr Ieiri repeats, placing her hand firmly on his shoulder, the smell of cigarette smoke thick in the air. âStuff like this can happen, this is just some kind of freak accident, like the type of case where all the bad stuff can happen at the same time. Sheâll be fine. Her chest is still moving, see? Sheâs breathing, too.â She presses her thumb on your wrist. âHer pulse is a little weak, but sheâll be fine. Nothing I canât fix.âÂ
Megumi inhales deeply, heart still racing. âYou donât have to sugarcoat it.âÂ
âIâm not,â she reassures him, instructing him to sit by you. Her hands lay gingerly over your forehead, and itâs very seldom that the doctor seems so solemn. He spectates the way the cursed energy flows into you, coursing through your brain. âHuh. Thatâs pretty worryingâ but sheâll be fine.âÂ
âWhatâs wrong? Is she going to survive?âÂ
âI promise you,â Dr Ieiri looks at him, placing her hand on his arm in reassurance, âSheâs my student, and sheâs strong. Sheâll be perfectly alright after this.âÂ
She then hovers her gloved hand over your head. âShe overexerted herself, basically. Her brain started bleeding internally.âÂ
Megumi shoots up from his seat. âWhââÂ
âI can heal her, donât worry. Itâll just take her body some time to continue healing itself,â Dr Ieiri says, then sighs. âCell manipulation is effective in the sense that it can perform targeted healing quickly, and the potency of that healing can be trained and learned. In that way, itâs better than what I can do for her. Itâs just that it comes with a massive drawback with insufficient training, since it harms the user and strains their brain. She trains every day, but itâs with slight cuts or nosebleeds, never things as major as this. This isnât even something her father could train himself to heal, and after his retirement his skills have fadedâ I can heal her, but thereâs no getting around the fact that she needs enough rest time for an easy recovery.âÂ
Reversed cursed technique flows through the room, the subtle warmth of it in the air growing stronger by your skull. âCould you do a few favours for me, Megumi? Theyâre for her.âÂ
Megumi nods, reluctantly sitting himself back down.Â
âOver the course of her recovery, make sure sheâs eating well and drinking well. Feed her stuff she likes, and make sure she gets lots of sleep. Once she starts feeling better, encourage her to ease her brain back into how it feels to use its cursed technique by doing some light training on minor fractures or wounds, but be present throughout in case something major happens again.âÂ
âOkay.âÂ
Gojo wakes him up first.Â
âMegumi,â his teacher says, hand on his shoulder, âSheâs going to be perfectly fine. Iâll have a word with her about how reckless she was once she wakes up. Just go on first.âÂ
âNo, I need to stayââÂ
âMegumi, go. I know you have regrets about however you may have treated her in the past. I know how much you care about her. But youâve been staying here for hours. Take a break, Megumi. Yuji and Nobara are worried about you.âÂ
Megumi scoffs. âWeâve only known each other for less than a month. They wouldnâtââÂ
âI need you to either walk out of the room now, or Iâll have to bring you out myself,â Gojo pushes. âLook, I know how important she is to you. You want to redeem yourself and make her feel better? All I can say now is that you make sure she knows her value to you. When she wakes up, show her how much you actually care about herâ let her see it.âÂ
Megumi walks out of the room, senses not working right. He slips into his shadow.Â
This is a scene from his dreams: you awaken, and without any fear or worry in the world, you curl into his touch. In his dreams, every day is perfect, and every day you are with him.Â
thank you for reading!!! I recommend you read chapter 10 right after this.

chapter synopsis:
When he frowns, throws his head down in shame, he looks so small, no longer the back you gazed at when he was guiding you to places, no longer the shadow you had admired and depended on back then. Your lips purse, then tremble with guilt; you canât bear to see him torture himself with these things any longer.
âIâm sorry,â he mumbles, pushing his face deeper into his palm and fingers. âWhen you fainted, I was worried. I was so, so worried. I didnât know what to do, thinking I had lost you. Iâm sorry. For everything.â
---
You wake up. Tsumiki has not.
word count: ~9k; tws: none for now, but please let me know if anything triggers you! I'll change it for you <3
short a/n: I can finally post this yayayyaya!! it took so long partly because I was busy, but also because I wanted to have this and chapter 11 fully planned out first before posting this (they were supposed to be one chapter-- I split them into two!). if you're still here, I would just really like to thank you for your patience. this fic is something I love sooo much!! and I'm so glad there are people who like it too.
before reading this, I recommend you read the companion piece I posted as well!
Youâve changed a lot.Â
From the time when you were crying at the playground and met Tsumiki and Megumi, to now, when every day feels like you could lose friends dear to you, youâve basically become another person.Â
16-3-2018Â
Itâs a spring day, with cherry blossom petals raining down from the trees and dancing through the air like ballerinas on a stage. Youâd just had your graduation ceremony wrapped up, and the passage of time feels bittersweet while youâre excited to continue schooling with a friend you think youâll have forever. Sometimes you think that things are moving all too quickly.Â
âYou know, [Name],â Yuuji starts after youâve walked out of your junior high school for the last time, âYouâre actually really kind.âÂ
âReally?â you scratch your cheek awkwardly, âIâm flattered, I guess? I never thought of myself like that,â you laugh, âBut like, so are you.âÂ
âNah,â he smiles boyishly, âYouâre really kind and gentle. I bet all kinds of animals must like you a lot. Especially those little stray dogs, you know?âÂ
âLook whoâs talking,â you laugh, â âEveryone absolutely adores you. Whyâre you saying this all of a sudden?âÂ
âNo, but, likeâ everyone knows it. I mean, as long as they know you, they know that youâre really kind, too. Thatâs probably the best part of it, âcause you donât really know that. But if you can help someone, you just do it, no questions asked. Just now, Ozawa asked me to take a picture with her. Then she said she wanted to thank you, since you were really kind to her. And I thought, âYeah, thatâs true!ââÂ
You grin, âOzawa said that? What else did she tell you?â Did she confess?Â
âNothing, really. I mean, she looked like she was about to say something, but that she wasnât really comfortable saying it. She left before I could ask. Wasnât sure if I should have said anything else,â he chuckles.Â
She was so close⌠âOhâŚ.âÂ
âWhy? Do you think she wanted to tell me anything important? I didnât know you two were that close, actually.âÂ
âThe thing is, we werenât,â you say, âI donât know why she said that. I just wanted to talk to her, because⌠well⌠um, girl stuff. Girls support girls.âÂ
âOh⌠like, she likes someone and you want to support her! Like in the manga you made me read! Sounds like something youâd do. Thatâs why youâre so kind!âÂ
You nearly choke. The densest boy youâve ever known. You sigh, knowingly, âYou can be so⌠blind to whatâs in front of you sometimes, you know?âÂ
âBut itâs the truth! And everyoneâs blind like that, I think,â he says, âYou didnât think you were kind, but you are, so thatâs what makes you you.âÂ
Everyoneâs like that, huh? you echo to yourself, You wonderâŚÂ
âI guess,â you chuckle, âYouâre like that too.âÂ
âIâm happy youâre my friend,â Â he had said once. Youâre happy heâs your friend, too.Â
In the past, Tsumiki once said the same thing: âI think that youâre a kind person. I think that everyone and anyone can be kind in any way. Itâs just that we have to think weâre kind and everything comes easy. I think that kind of life is the best. So⌠donât give up on trying to be a good person, [Name]. Or maybe just being a kind one, because I think youâd be amazing at that.â She told you that you were kind, and that was what made you special. And to you, at that time, with nothing to distinguish yourself from your peers and the sense of being extremely average, youâd never thought that someone could know you and think there was something more than ordinary inside.Â
Nowadays you donât think of yourself as kind anymore, though youâre not sure when you stopped. Maybe it was after you stopped being able to talk to Tsumiki, or when you were no longer your parentsâ little girl, or perhaps this was all just a part of growing up. So whenever you think of this againâ of kindness, or innocence, or nostalgia, all you can think of is Tsumiki and Megumi, of her smiles and his eyes. Now when you do things that may be seen as kind, you do it to emulate herâ to be like the role model she was. Itâs different from the same kindness you had as a child, twinged with innocence. It was as if the more you knew of the world, the harder it was to genuinely, unquestionably be kind to it.Â
26-6-2018
Thereâs a ringing in your ear when you wake up and have a throbbing pain in the back of your head. When your eyes meet the light you wince, closing them again. You feel horribleâ as if youâve had the awfulness of a fever multiplied a hundred times over.Â
âWhy are you whisperingâŚ?â you momble out weakly.Â
Your back hurts.Â
You realise youâre on your bed back at campus. But howâ?Â
Tsumiki!Â
âAhâ Tsumiki!â you startle yourself, sitting up, âI saw Tsumiki.âÂ
âShh,â Gojo hushes you. âSit back down. It wasnât enough to help her.âÂ
âBut I have toâ whereâs Megumi? We have to go back, I need to try again, please, Gojoâ!âÂ
It was never enough in the first place. You thought things had changed, that they were different, that now because you were in the world of sorcery you were special somehow, that suddenly you had potential to do something because you had powers and suddenly you were no longer the faceless, empty girl that people paid little mind to. But it wasnât enough. You werenât enough in the end, and perhaps thereâs nothing special about you at allâÂ
âAnd endanger your health like that?â Gojo argues, âMegumi panicked and brought you here. He carried you all the way thinking you had died. Youâd had a nosebleed due to high blood pressure and then lost consciousness due to intracranial bleeding. With how quickly it all went down, you were close to dying of hemorrhagic shock. Youâre running a fever now, too. At the moment, thereâs no way to help Tsumiki. The others panicked, and we didnât know if you wanted to tell Yuji and Nobara what happened. We just said you were training and strained yourself. Theyâre worried. Shoko, too.âÂ
âAnd now youâre stuck here, on this bed with your limbs feeling wrong and tangled and twisted all over, and pain festering all over inside you like ticks on bleating sheep, parasitic and hungry. Useless. Thereâs nothing you can do.Â
Utterly useless. You didnât think you could be so weak. Your head throbs even more and you feel bile rise in your throat, but youâd had nothing to eat in hours.Â
How could you help strangers without question yet fail to help one of those dearest to you?Â
âBut there has to be some wayââ
âRest first, [Name],â he orders firmly. âTake a deep breath.âÂ
Almost like a parent.Â
âYou didnât tell my parents about this, right?âÂ
âTheyâre fine. Iâll need to check with your father to see why the effects on your body this time were so adverse, but worry later. Rest first.âÂ
âWait, you canât tell them. Theyâre going to take me away. I still need to be hereââÂ
âWorry about that later.âÂ
Your eyes wander around the room youâre in, succumbing to the pull of slumber as bright ceiling lightsâ glares rebound from the walls toward you. Thereâs a pause in the air, and Gojo takes a seat beside your bed, and you cast your eyes down on your lap.Â
âWhen I saw Tsumiki,â you start, gingerly nursing your tone, âI was terrified. Iâm so used to seeing her alive and happy,â your voice wavers, âI didnât know what to do.âÂ
He leans closer. You can tell heâs listening, quiet and sombre. âGojo⌠do you think sheâll be okay?â you look up at him, âThereâs still hope, right? Sheâll be okay, right? You have to tell me that sheâll be okay.âÂ
Then a thought rises up from within you, one as dirty as a carcass, a dead thing festering against its will, bile rises up within your throat and you want to throw out all of the nothing that youâve eaten in the past who-knows-how-many days. It comes out like a whisper, like a curse, like itâll come true if you echo it loud enough.Â
âSheâs not dead, is she?âÂ
Why isnât he of all people crying? Why did heâ the both of themâ never tell you? He watched her grow up, and now this man stands before you, solitary, as the Strongest always was, the separation between you and the people the two of you are having been carved out long ago in history. As if he had never felt anything more than the cursed energy running through his eyes, all the curses demolished with mere blood from his veins. Have things become so untouchable that not even emotion can make this facade falter? That he canât show more worry at the sight of a girl he raised?Â
He grips your shoulder, authoritative and calm, until you realise how badly his hand is shaking. This man, your teacher and temporary guardian, bares himself when he reaches for you. He closes the gap between you two, shedding off his infallible powers, and from his strength is born this image of the loneliest man youâve ever seen.Â
âI donât know, [Name]. Sometimes there are things you canât change. So I donât know, and Iâm so, so sorry.âÂ
âWhy didnât you tell me this? You could have. You could have trusted me with this. I love Tsumiki as much as you doâ no, I love her more, I love⌠both of them, so, so muchâŚâ
âI know, [Name],â as if he knew all along the hours and nights you spent waiting for an answer, always having them on her mind, always thinking of Tsumikiâs smile and Megumiâs frown, âI know.â
âKnock, knock,â she shouts from beyond the door, stirring you awake. Gojo must have placed another blanket over youâ it feels extra warm. âEverything okay in there?âÂ
âYes,â you muster weakly, ready to curl up under the covers again, âIâm fine.âÂ
A loud sigh. âIf youâre going to raise your voice, donât do it if sheâs just woken up!â he scolds. Itâs Megumiâs voice, and like clockwork, joy creeps into your heart. Time to have some sweet dreams, thenâ
The door bursts open: Megumi, Nobara and Yuji.Â
âWe got you some food,â Yuji grins, âMeatball soup! Woohoo!âÂ
âWoahâ your eyes are super swollen, [Name]! Come on, I need the full details,â Nobara begins, âLet me know what happened, and you can get some of this stuff off your chest. What,â she continues, looking pointedly at Megumi, âSomeone hurt you or something?âÂ
âWhaâ Why are you looking at me?â says Megumi.Â
âI donât really feel comfortable talking about it right now, but thank you,â you mutter, voice soft and in all ways unfortunately pathetic. You have to deliberately avoid Megumiâs eyes or you have a feeling you may break right then and there. âMegumi didnât⌠he didnât do anything. But thatâs enough about that. Thanks for the food, Iâm really sorry to trouble you guys and make you worry.âÂ
âDonât worry. It wasnât trouble at all!â she smiles, then Nobara glares at Megumi once again. âIâm watching you, Fushiguro.âÂ
âHuh?âÂ
âGuys!â Yuji interrupts, âCome on, we came here to give her the food, right? Come on, let me set this mini table up for you.âÂ
âNo, itâs okay, Iâll do it myselfââ
âCome on,â he insists, âLeave it to us. You should rest.âÂ
He makes quick work of it, but after seeing Tsumiki your worry for Yuji has only grown tenfold.
âHave you eaten yet? Has anything bad happened? Have you guys been alright the past few hours?âÂ
âYes, no, yes, donât worry!â he says, pulling over the lid of the steaming pot.Â
Before long, thereâs a tiny table and tinier pots of rice and meatball soup before you, along with a pair of chopsticks. âHere you go,â Yuji says, placing a spoon on the table as well. â...You know, it never hit me before that the reason you got sick so much was that you had your technique or something. I guess summerâs gonna be in full swing soon, since itâs getting this bad, huh?âÂ
With a blow against the wooden spoon, your hand brings it to your mouth as if itâs about to shatter like glass. Itâs comfortingly savoury, warm, and clear as river water. You miss your motherâs cooking. You donât think youâll get the chance to try it ever again.Â
âIs it good?âÂ
You nod your head.Â
Tsumikiâs in a state of comatose with no cure. Your relationship with your parents has been twisted and deformed far past the gleeful days you used to have eating at the same dinner table and laughing as your father joked with the wisdom you believed him to have, and your mother couldnât help but giggle along uncontrollably. Your motherâs on a hospital bed with a slim chance of making it at least another year, and your fatherâs ten steps from either sharing the same fate as your mother due to sheer stress alone, or becoming a lonely widower. You donât want to speak of Megumi at the moment.Â
Itâs all sudden. All too sudden, like a dam breaking, emotion surging out of you.
Youâve heard that in these situations itâs always good to be calm, to be grateful, to have hopeâ but what hope do you have left?Â
You miss 2010, Tsumiki letting you run fingers through her hair as you braided it; you miss your father and mother and how no matter which house you lived in or how little friends you had, your parents would shower you with affection and could make everything seem okay then.Â
Thereâs water trickling down your cheek, fragility in your lips and jaw.Â
âWoahâ hey, hey, whyâre you crying? Come on, calm down, okay?âÂ
You sob, âYeah. SorryâŚâÂ
Nobara pats your back, sighing loudly. âItâs okay. Let it out, [Name].âÂ
Thereâs no retort from Megumi, no âWhat am I even supposed to say?â like you would expect him to.Â
âAnd if you donât know what to say, think harder, dumbass!â Nobara says, as if she could read his thoughts.Â
You regain yourself for a moment, taking a deep breath, and then youâre back to your senses again, though the spasms are still there. âIâm sorry, ignore thatâ must be fatigue-induced hormones or something, if those existâ hic!âÂ
Now Yuuji is the one scrambling to awkwardly pat your back, a little lost, but trying his best. You donât like him comforting you all that much, and he knows it: youâve always wanted to be the one taking care of him instead. âHey, itâs alright,â he comforts you, âYou wanna have some time alone?âÂ
You nod like a meek kindergartener. Yuuji smiles and guides you through the crying spasms with a hand on your shoulder.Â
The three of them head out as quickly as they came in. âDonât worry,â Yuji turns back to you before leaving, âWhatever youâre feeling, Iâm sure it canât get to you easily. And I promise, weâre here to help.âÂ
What were you thinking? It was embarrassing, crying like that, having them worry for you. You werenât a child! You didnât want them to think you were someone who crumbled at every obstacle, especially not Nobara or Yuuji. You hide your face in your blanket even if thereâs no one who can see you like this anyway. You look pathetic like this, crying with puffy eyes and a swollen face as snot dribbles down from your nose.Â
When it all fizzles over, and everything is clear enough that you can breathe, you continue to eat the meatballs in the pot until youâre full, and set the tray of food aside.Â
Dr Ieiri enters an hour later.Â
âHey, [Name].âÂ
âDr Ieiri,â you call out, âSorry. Iâm not sure why I just went out like that.âÂ
âNo worries,â she says, âBut I did want to tell you something. Although your internal bleeding was partly caused by you pushing yourself too hardâ which is something we have to work on, by the way,â she stresses, âYour cursed technique could have already caused underlying problems with your blood pressure before that. Iâm sure you know this, but unmanaged cases of hypertension can cause ruptured aneurysms and brain bleeds. Iâm going to test your blood pressure later for confirmation, but Iâm pretty sure this is the best explanation I have for what happened, as of now.âÂ
âBut⌠those cases usually happen with older peopleâŚwhyâ?âÂ
âWell if thereâs one thing I know based on the degree I pretty much cheated to get, [Name], itâs that with the human body anything can happen. Your life could end at any moment,â she states, then ruffles your hair, âBut thatâs why you just have to make sure you spend good time doing stuff that matters to you.âÂ
You cast your face down, feeling guilty saddling her with your problems, but you ask her anyway, âSo where do I go from here?âÂ
âWell, high blood pressure isnât a big problem. You can manage it with changes in your lifestyle and your diet, or by relieving stress. Though, it goes without saying that Iâd advise against going too close to any missions right nowâ just be on standby for support. And even if youâre on standby, just keep some distance unless you end up in the crossfire or get overly anxious about things. What Iâm really worried about is why the reaction from your body was so adverse.âÂ
âBut that doesnât really matter,â you frown, âThis part of my cursed technique is just something I have to live with. Iâll always have to go through some kind of pain every time I use it. This time just happened to be particularly bad on my body.âÂ
âYou shouldnât be viewing the pain as normal, [Name]. I also did an MRI scan on you that revealed that most of the bleeding probably came from your frontal lobe, so our current theory is that the severity of your cursed energy backfiring was due to that mark or seal being especially strong.â Â
You keep your lips pursed, diverting your eyes from her.Â
âYouâll be alright,â she assures, âI know it sounds lonely. But this is probably only a temporary issue. Iâll work with you on training your cursed technique, since your father told me it was similar to how I learned my reverse cursed technique. It may sound like BS coming out of me, but right now I just need you to take care of yourself better. At the end of the day, you still helped us figure out something new about Tsumikiâs condition. So now, rest.âÂ
âOkay, doctor,â you smile mildly, âThanks.âÂ
âThat Itadori boy said the same thing,â she goes, âThat you made him feel less lonely. Man, maybe thatâs your real power, being that kind of person for other people.âÂ
Itâs the first time in hours that your chest has felt so warm.Â
âWell, heâs one of the closest people to me.âÂ
âI can tell,â she smiles, an indecipherable depth in her eyes, âHey, word of advice. When you have friendships like that? Hold on to it for the rest of your life. Donât let that person go. Keep checking in on each other.âÂ
âUh⌠yeah, sure. Of course,â you reply, a bit puzzled. âWell, Iâll try. I worry about him a lot, because itâs a given that heâs crazy. Thatâs why he ate the finger. But before that, I actually had this notion in my head, like: âYuji canât be a good Jujutsu sorcerer.ââÂ
âAnd why is that?âÂ
âHeâs too good of a good person, and he would try to save people indiscriminately. Like some kind of hero. For people like us, we have to accept deaths and casualties sometimes because theyâre just part of the job. Itâs just the lot we drew in life. But for Yuji, I always had the feeling that if he misses even one person, heâd torture himself with guiltâ and heâs strong. I know heâll be able to save most people. Just not all of them And, well. I think that would make him break.â You say it as if proclaiming it any louder would be cursing him indefinitely to that kind of fate.Â
ââŚFunny, I knew someone like that,â Dr Ieiri says with darkened eyes. You couldnât tell what she was hiding from you, whether sheâd been wanting to unleash a secret on you or not. âPeople like that are important in our lives. Especially with what we can do with the âcursesâ we have.âÂ
âYeah, I know. Yuji is really, really important to me. And from the start of this all, Iâve been thinking, âI want to protect him,â because I just canât handle that happening. I want to keep⌠taking care of him, because something could happen thatââÂ
â-that takes him away from you? If in any way he doesnât need you anymore?âÂ
What?Â
Ding ding dingâ! ââoh, wait, thatâs my phone. Sorry, I need to take this. Hello? Yes, yes. Understood. Iâll be right there,â she replies, switching personality modes entirely, while youâre left trying to navigate the maze she dropped you in with her words. âApologiesâ Iâve got to go. Iâll come back, okay?âÂ
You nod your head meekly, watching her slip out of the room, but youâre still unsettled all over.Â
âUntil thenâ rest well. I think youâll need it, doctor junior.âÂ
You donât know how you should be feeling, but every part of you feels horrible. Your eyelids droop like an unwieldy weight, your head throbs as if itâs become a punching bag, and you donât think your joints have ever ached so awfully in your life. Your throat hurts, too. Maybe you caught the flu as well. What happened to Tsumiki? What happened to you? Just what did Dr Ieiri mean, and what was she seemingly about to tell you?Â
You spend the rest of the day asleep.Â
27-6-2018Â
You trudge out of bed feeling just as weak as you did the day before. The sun is up, scrutinising you from behind the curtains and shining so bright your head hurts. With a weak grip, you grab your toothbrush and head to the bathroom, having been reduced to a sluggish mess.Â
âHey,â Nobara greets you. Youâre surprised someone can look so pretty even just after waking up.Â
âMorning,â you momble. You can feel her eyes on you for a little while, almost as if sheâs examining you somehowâ itâs almost embarrassing, the way youâre hunched over in fatigue, a direct contrast to her beauty, fresh as a rose. Itâs mortifying letting her see you like this.Â
She asks if you feel better. You nod.Â
âI should ask,â she starts, âWhereâd you come from, actually? If you donât mind me asking.âÂ
You pause to think, then answer her. âGrowing up, we moved around a lot. I didnât really have one place that I came from, but my parentsâ hometown is Sendai. I donât really consider it my home, though. âI mean, it felt like I was being juggled all around a few islands or towns in the countryside, only for my parents to come back to Sendai when I was in my last year of junior high,â you finish, clearing your throat after, âWhat about you?âÂ
âA village near Morioka. Filled with old people and old-fashioned people,â she says, then groans, âI hated it. It was always my dream to leave that place and come to Tokyo.âÂ
âTrust me, I understand the feeling,â you chuckle, âAs a kid I lived in Tokyo for one yearâŚâ then you pause, âThings are much different when youâre younger. So I guess thatâs what made it all the more magical. So much of my childhood can be condensed into that, itâs like the rest is fodder because I was never really doing much. Like, I wasnât really living my life, I suppose.âÂ
âAw, I get that. So much of my childhood was spent trying to end it,â Nobara says, âI was raised by my grandmother, since my parents werenât really around. I mean, my mom left me, too. And the old hag was strict, and the countrysideâs full of misogynistic sickos. Made living there even worse, so Iâd always wanted to leave. I couldnât understand city peopleâs craze for the countryside.âÂ
âYeah, me neitherâŚâ you agree, knowing her feelings all too well.
Nobara stands up, her chest puffed out confidently like sheâs about to brave some metaphorical storm, her hands in fists around her waist. âHey, this stuff makes me feel kind of depressed. We should talk about something else!âÂ
âI donât know what to talk about, thoughâŚâÂ
âAnything. But I donât think we should talk about the countryside. I donât wanna live there anymore anyway, and weâll just be reaffirming the fact that weâre country bumpkins!âÂ
âReally? But you do strike me as a city girl. Even if we both didnât come from the city, you really do seem like the metropolitan type. Itâs like everything about you is so stylish, Nobara!âÂ
For a second she stops moving, like sheâs been caught off-guard somehow. Yet her recovery comes faster than the bullet train she sat on during her journey to Tokyo, and she grins cheekily, flashing the prettiest gummy smile youâve ever seen. âThanks.âÂ
Not wanting the conversation to fill with awkwardness, you propose, âWe should go shopping next time. I need to learn how to be more fashionable too.âÂ
âThen Iâll teach you all about it. We can go after that. Youâll look so pretty in all of those clothes!âÂ
âReally? I donât really think Iâm pretty, but Iâd like that.â
âOh, shut up,â she says sarcastically, âThe pretty girls always donât think theyâre pretty, for some reason. Come on! Be confident! Itâs going to be an actual problem one day if you donât realise how much of a catch you are now! Youâre literally drop-dead gorgeous!âÂ
âThis is probably one of the first times somebody actually called me pretty,â you sheepishly admit.Â
âIâm calling bullshit. Are you serious?â she leans in, closer to you. You donât think many people have been this interested in you before, particularly about the way you look. Itâs nice having this kind of attention on your face, shy as you are to confess it.Â
âYeah, I guess people never really said I was outright cute or anything like thatâŚâÂ
âUgh, people these days,â she shakes her head, âItâs just like how that guy didnât scout me as a model earlier! They all just donât know real beauty when they see it.âÂ
You giggle, âThat sounds right, probably.âÂ
âBecause I am right!â she passionately claims, âPeople all over the world are going to be oblivious to someoneâs beauty in one way or another. But what we girls need to remember most is that we are pretty to ourselves and thatâs all that matters. Right?âÂ
âRight,â you grin at her.Â
29-6-2018
For the next few days, there is not much to do: you avoid Megumi like the plague, and he doesnât visit you eitherâ out of respect or apprehension, you donât know. Yuji comes and goes to check on you, and so do Nobara and Gojo, while you crack down on Dr Ieiriâs borrowed biology books to improve your abilities. With every new topic you study, itâs as if things are back to the way they were, especially when you spent your summers sick and nearly bedridden, loneliness returning to you like an old friend. The promise of being here, with the other students, away from your parentsâ felt quite freeing, at first, though it guilts you to admit that with your motherâs condition. But now you find yourself essentially back at what resembles square one.Â
So you havenât changed a bit, really.Â
Eventually, youâre allowed to leave the bed, but you feel so drained you spend hours in your bed anyway.Â
âGot a call for you, your mom and dad,â Gojo says, peering from the door, âYou okay to answer?âÂ
âSure,â you press his phone to your ear, âHello?âÂ
â[Name]?âÂ
âYeah?âÂ
âI heard about what happened. While I have some words for you concerning what you did, I called you to tell you that you should probably come home for a while. Your mother is worried about something at the momentââÂ
âIs that [Name]? I need to speak to her now,â your mother interjects, voice desperate and never having sounded so weak before. You ready yourself for a long, arduous lecture or five minutes straight of her screaming at you to take care of yourself.Â
âIs she okay?â you ask.Â
âHealth-wise, sheâs fineâ better, actually. But this is about something else that both of us are worried about,â your father answers, before your mother snatches his phone.
â[Name], I just finished chemo and Iâm really weak. But we need to talk to you about something concerning your safety. Come as soon as you canâ come tomorrow!âÂ
âGive it back. Sheâll be there, but I need you to come down. You can just hang up the phone now, [Name],â pulling the phone back to him, âBut this matter is urgentâ you really need to come.âÂ
âOkay. Iâll be there,â you reply, and things taper off into static silence before your father quiets the sound of his breathing from the phone with a beep, as if your mother was no longer there.
His anxiety hung steadily over his voice like a guillotine, to the point it was tangible through the phone. And you would have tried to get him to treat your mother better, to be gentler with her, especially when she was sick. Yet your head was done with thisâ being put through the wringer, the repeated cycle of worry and calm and worry, bleaching your brain and forcing it into a perpetually spinning washing machine. So, horrendous imagery aside, you just surrendered yourself temporarily, let people lay you out and do what they want with you for a while. Make the trip back home when your real home is gone.Â
âWow. Rough week, huh? You just got here, and now youâre going to be back there again,â Gojo chimes dryly.Â
ââŚtell me about it.âÂ
âTheyâre always calling me and saying, âGojo, is she safe?â, âGojo, are you protecting her?â, you know.âÂ
You purse your lip. âSo, still overprotective,â you sigh, âIâm sorry about that. I hope you can just ignore them, and that theyâre not annoying you too much, because I thought that all of this would change after going here.âÂ
âYour parents love you a lot.âÂ
âI know,â you agree without thinking twice, âItâs just that growing up, I think they worried about me too much.âÂ
âYouâre right about that,â Gojo says, leaning back, âBut I guess I kind of get it now. I thought it was crazy how much they would fret over you when I was seventeen, but now that Iâm older, I know that sixteenâs a young age. They overdo it sometimes⌠but I guess they also think that one day you may be too old to rely on or be protected by them anymoreâ especially because of the nature of Jujutsu Society. So, you should enjoy this part of being young, too.âÂ
Itâs a stuffy room. Your eyes water a little, the dampness of sweat just barely noticeable on your skin.Â
You thought that with how tired you were earlier, youâd be able to get to sleep much easier, fatigue seeping into your skull and carving bags under your eyes. But instead, it seems that youâre burdened with another sleepless night.Â
The whole day was spent alone, Nobara off to explore the city and Yuji⌠well, youâd rather he be there with you, but you understand if heâs away for something more important. Itâs not his obligation to care for you, and you bite back the thought screaming indignantly, âSo why is it yours to take care of him?â You donât really want to think about what Megumiâs doing.Â
âI think youâre a lonely girl sometimes, too,â Yuji had said. Yeah, itâs never going to go away. Youâll be lonely forever until you finally rot. Or something. Thatâs why personal usefulness to others became your doctrine. If you canât fill the gap between you and others with closeness, fill it with obligation.Â
You miss Tsumiki. That must be whatâs keeping you up, you think. Thereâs a folder you kept like a treasure, of mementos and short messages and letters through all your life. More than three quarters of that is from Tsumiki, Megumi or both of them. Yuji never did much of that, instead âliving in the momentâ, even though he has the notes from the snacks your mother used to make you give him, back when your parents had just met and fallen in love with that sweet young man of your best friend.Â
The clear folder hasnât changed, but your thumbing over its edges halts when you remember that you kept your letter in there too. The one meant for Fushiguro Megumi. The one that had been plaguing your mind even before you went to see Tsumiki. You read through it again, the paper now slightly yellowed after excessive waiting, as if you expected anything different.Â
Youâll pass it to him one day, you had thought. Now you donât want to think of the matter entirely.Â
Itâs left on your desk, written side facing up. At this point you donât care anymore if anyone were to read it.Â
Knock, knock. Gentle rapping on the door.Â
Lots of knocks on your door these few days. People seem to like entering your room a lot.Â
Instead of a person, however, itâs a whimper that comes out from the other side of the door. A dogâs whimper.Â
âShiro!â you whisper-shout, âIâll open the door.âÂ
It rushes to you, curls in a bundle of white fur around your legs.Â
âAre Kuro and Megumi with youââÂ
ââŚhey,â comes the emotionally stunted manâs stunted reply. Damnit.Â
ââŚhi.âÂ
You both have this problem, dear goodness. Shiro slips back into Megumiâs shadow.Â
âCan I come in?âÂ
You sigh exasperatedly, âYeah⌠yeah, sure, for a while.â Awkward silence again.Â
âLook, Iâm kind of upset, still,â you rub your temples, âSo if you donât have much to sayââÂ
He steps into your room, closing the door behind him, his expression obscured surreptitiously, some secret heâs trying to keep. Thereâs a little paper bag in his right hand. The muscles in his left hand clench and tighten and his fingers curl inwards ever so slightly, as if heâs trying to hold on to something, but all he has in it is the air thatâs been flowing through the open windows.Â
âSorry, was I, uh, was I disturbing you?âÂ
âYou know what? No, itâs okay. I was about to sleep. You wanted to tell me about something?âÂ
He places the bag on your bedside table, then pauses, his face still away from yours.Â
â...Look, Megumi, Iâve got a lot of things on my mind right nowââ
He slumps, all the aloof sturdiness in his body crumbling like sandcastles hit by thrashing waves. There seems to be a kind of frailty in the way his body slightly shakes when he starts to open his mouth and his hands reach to massage his templesâ vulnerability youâd still never expect from a person who, up until a while ago, could seem so unreachable and distant, superior in every way yet so dear to you.
There are people who think that weakness wrecks the impression of strength that a person gives. But theyâre wrong, and heâs never seemed stronger. To see him like this, to see him sleeping next to you, to see him baring his heart and soul, probably for the first time in the many years youâve known himâ you think that he must have been as scared as you were.Â
You donât know the extent to which he must have gone through, waiting for the most important person in his life to wake up, not knowing if she would, waiting and waiting and waiting; heâs just like you and he always has been.Â
When he frowns, throws his head down in shame, he looks so small, no longer the back you gazed at when he was guiding you to places, no longer the shadow you had admired and depended on back then. Your lips purse, then tremble with guilt; you canât bear to see him torture himself with these things any longer.Â
âIâm sorry,â he mumbles, pushing his face deeper into his palm and fingers. âWhen you fainted, I was worried. I was so, so worried. I didnât know what to do, thinking I had lost you. Iâm sorry. For everything.âÂ
Itâs strange whenever it hits you in the face, that someone can care for you of all people this much. Youâre nine times less eloquent and succinct when youâre around him. Heâs about to up that number to nine thousand. With a million words in the gap between you and him, you decide to utter the first few.Â
Itâs silly and jejunely self-centered, the way heâs baring these long-stashed-away feelings to you, bringing shadows into direct daylight, only for you to think, This kind of sounds like shoujo manga.Â
âIâm okay,â you say, gingerly patting his back, âI know that it was reckless of me. I know that I shouldnât have done something like that, especially when I already knew the consequences to my health. I was mad at you at first for not telling me, but I meanâ I can understand now,âÂ
âNo, no itâs not your fault,â he whispers, âYou were trying to help her, and I had never told you about these things before, and I saw you fallâ Iâm so sorryââ
âYou know that Iâ I told you that Iâve forgiven you already, Megumi.â
Voice soft, like he canât even bear to hear it himself. âNot just that. I wrong you all the time, and you always forgive me.âÂ
That strikes a nerve. âYou sound like youâre wallowing in self-guilt,â you snap, âStop trying to crucify yourself, would you?âÂ
About 20% of that was meant to hurtâ you didnât think your answer through, but this just frustrated you. Thereâs about 40% of patience you have left for this circus, first with neither Gojo or Megumi telling you about this, second with the fact that they couldnât trust you with it: the weight of the situation upon you, or its secrecy between them, you didnât really care. They had just upped and made that decision for you already, that you couldnât be privy to this.Â
Megumi freezes.Â
You gasp, the brutality in your voice hitting you. âIâm sorryââ Â
The paper bag crinkles as a gust of wind from the windows pushes past it.Â
You pull him near you, your hand on his, even if youâre still facing the ground.Â
âIâm just frustrated, Megumi,â you sigh, then angle your face to his, your stare burning into him as permanently as engravings on wood. âHey. Look at me.âÂ
â...yes,â he answers, defeatedly bowing his head down again.Â
âThen donât apologise anymore. You keep asking me to forgive you, as if every time I promise you something, Iâm lying to you. Please listen. If you care about honesty, then let me give you honesty.âÂ
Your feel heat rise in your chest, tears bubbling up and yourself about to overflow with emotion, âI know in the past, those apologies must have made me prideful, in a way, like some form of catharsis, but I know now that I can say this,â you continue, âI know that you arenât some burden on my back. I do want you in my life. Thatâs why I spent so long waiting for you, right?
âI was livid when I found out about Tsumikiâs condition. Iâd never felt soâŚdownright infuriated by someone in my entire life, which says a lot, considering I waited for you for years with the loyalty of a street dog. I was just so mad at that moment that you had never told me about any of thisâ that nobody tells me about nearly anything. I kept thinking that I was always the outsider, and that you people justâ never trust me or tell me things, and then you let guilt and whatever you have of your own psychological problems eat you up from the inside. It made me feel so lonely and frustrated, because I knew I could help somehow, but I could never decide to do so because you just wouldnât allow me to. If youâre going to hold all that weight on your own, youâll crumble under it. I just thought, if things are going to be that way, canât I help you hold that up too?âÂ
âIââ
Deep breaths, in and out, emotional maturity, communication. Thatâs what matters.Â
Tears are burning at the side of your eyes.Â
Even if neither of you excel at it, you need it now. Nobaraâs confidence, your parentsâ structured way of speaking, Gojoâs apathy to social reservations, Yujiâs social intelligence. Even Makiâs tell it like it is advice, which youâre thankful for to this day. You donât exactly need to be this way with him, you think; you could blow up in front of him and vent all of your frustrations. He would take it.Â
But you want to, you really, really do. For his sake and his sake only, you want to be gentle with him, as difficult as it is for you.Â
You donât think youâve ever tried so hard to stop crying, even with the experiences you had growing around your parents.Â
Like defeating that first curse, thereâs calmness in adrenaline and emotional messes; you need to gather the storm of thoughts methodically, assiduously. Your voice rebounds against the wall as you continue your little soliloquy, Megumi standing against your bedroom door as he remains downcast.Â
âWe both love Tsumiki. Even if I doubted things in the past Iâm confident I can say it was always the three of us, at least in my head, because the two of you were just that much important to me. If you still have, at the very least, the respect to honour that relationship, then let me share these kinds of burdens. If you have issues, tell me about them, so we can shoulder them together. I donât know if it hurts for you to hear this, but itâs the objective truth: stop treating things like theyâre exclusively your issues.âÂ
Because he looks a mix of a) affronted since you said the truth, b) insulted since he feels accused and c) shocked at your sudden show of maturity, you sigh again. âOkay? So no more âyouâre indebted to meâ, âI should not be forgivenâ, nonsense. I know that you feel responsible for this stuff. And you are. Itâs endearing and so characteristic of you to be like this, because youâre⌠a good person, no matter how you argue otherwise. And a selfless idiot, too. Itâs like you always donât think youâre worth much to people. Things arenât like that!âÂ
âBut youâre wrong. How can you of all people sayââ
âLet me finish.â Then you add, sheepishly and mindlessly, âWhat I mean to say is, Iâll keep being here. Iâll stay with you. So we need to shoulder this kind of weight together.âÂ
No words, speechless. You robbed them from him the moment you opened your mouth and freed your truth.Â
âYouâre an important person to me. I hope you know that.âÂ
Emotions cycle through his face: anguish, conflict, guilt, shame, clarity.Â
You hold out your hand, eyes still boring into his. âSo will you let me handle those burdens with you?âÂ
He finds it, wraps his fingers around yours, with all the tenderness of coming home, and looks straight at you.Â
âOkay,â he says.Â
For those few moments itâs nothing but silence. The moonlight glowing against his skin, the dull humming of cicadas in the school compound, the moment being wholly yours. You can hear the highs and lows of his breathing, see the rise of his chest slightly peek out from his shirt, feel how warm and comforting his hands are.Â
This is the closest you have ever felt to another person.Â
You had never put much thought into your future. But would it be wild to say you would like to have this forever?Â
You wonder how he feels, looking at you the same way you look back at him.Â
âŚ
Bark! Bark!Â
Shiro emerges, white fur jumping by the door knob.Â
âThe door? Why, you want me to open it for you?âÂ
At your dismay, you retract from Megumi, open the door, then turn to the boy, whoâs avoiding eye contact. âHey, if you want to leave the room, just tell me. You donât have to summon them behind my backâŚâÂ
âDid you give it to her yet?â you hear over the thrumming of your own heartbeat. Behind the turn of the walkway outside your room, Nobara and Yujiâs heads sprout up.Â
âI need to give you this,â still flustered, Megumi holds a bag up in the air like theyâre sacred offerings, as if heâs sorting out a truce. âStrawberry cake from a shop in Tokyo.âÂ
âHuh?âÂ
ââŚit tastes like the one we made in the past.âÂ
ââŚwait. So while I was here the whole dayâ I was actually studying, mind youâ you were out trying cake?âÂ
He scratches his neck guiltily. âKugisakiâs orders. She recommended a few places to⌠cheer you up. Itadori came along and paid for half of everything.â
âAnd the other half?âÂ
ââŚâ
âGojoâs money?âÂ
âYeah.â Heâs not even ashamed.Â
âThey thought I did something to upset you⌠and that it ended with you getting sick for some reason. Next thing I knew I was getting shoved around Tokyo.âÂ
âI meanâŚâÂ
ââŚwanna have it for supper?âÂ
You get into hysterics from the absurdity of it allâ the image of the three of them scouring through Tokyo for strawberry cake, before Megumi had come into your room looking like a miserable, sopping wet stray dog.Â
âYeah, sure. Letâsâ pftâ letâs go have supper.â Â
The two of you walk side by side to the studentsâ shared dining table, ready to prop the bag on it and feast at heaven-knows-what-time at night (or morning?), before youâre caught off-guard by the other two. Nobody had ever done something like this before for you, whether you were sick or healthy. You didnât think that it was possible for someone to do this for you, of all people. For all the goodness of you and Yujiâs closed-up friendship, nothing like this had been done before on either his or your end.Â
âDid it work?â Nobara and Yuji ask in unison.Â
âYep. Thanks, guys,â you blink away the tears starting to form, âThis was really sweet of you all. Sorry for the outburst, and, you know, the troubleââÂ
âDonât apologise!â Nobara says, âCome on, take a seat. [Name], next time, if Fushiguro does something to make you mad again, tell us and weâll give him the beatdown of the century.âÂ
âUhââÂ
âAw, man,â Yuji interrupts, âSorry, Fushiguro. Iâll go easy on youââÂ
âYeah, no,â Megumi replies sharply, with the same frown heâs always had.Â
Things will be better. Theyâll get better soon, and Tsumiki is going to wake up. And when she does, youâll be so happy to see her smile again.Â
You hope you can make her proud of the person youâve become. You take another bite, feeling that you werenât so lonely after all.Â
30-6-2018Â
The two of you sleep in your bed tonightâ heâs covered the blanket over you this time. When you greet him in the morning, your health feels good as new. Your body aches less when you gaze into his eyes, and theyâve never seemed so vibrantly green before, like a forest in summer.Â
âToday is going to be a good day,â you declare, though it sounds like a promise.Â
âIt is,â he agrees.Â
âIâm going to go see my parents today, but Iâm dreading it a lot less than I thought. I mean, Iâm worried about my mom, but they said this was about something elseâ an âurgent matterâ. I really should be more worried, and normally I would be panicking right now,â you grin, âBut Iâm just⌠not.âÂ
âWell, if itâs a big burdenâŚâ Megumi trails off, bashfully scratching his neck, although his back is facing you as he speaks, â...you could share the news with me, whatever it ends up being.âÂ
You havenât grinned so widely in your entire life, you think, giddy on the feeling you canât quite name yet as you sit up against the bedframe, tidying up the pillows behind you, âYeah. I definitely will.âÂ
He starts to pull the mattress covers, and you ask that you let him help you with the making of your own bed, the two of you pulling opposite corners of the blanket as you face each other.Â
You exhale, light and free, âI feel like weâve overcome a big obstacle, somehow.â Youâre too giddy and light off this feeling to look at him directly, so you busy yourself with focusing on making the bed.Â
âIs that so?â he goes, though you donât miss the subtle blush on his face when you gaze up at him for a moment out of instinct. âWhy is that?âÂ
âYeah,â you say, still not facing him, âLike⌠no more secrets. Now all we need to do together is wait for Tsumiki to wake up.âÂ
âShe will,â he replies affirmatively, âI know she will.âÂ
He inhales. When things happen between you, in your own world and spaceâ they donât go unnoticed. They never have. You watch the rise and fall of his chest, anticipating what heâll say next.Â
âKugisaki, Itadori and I have been sent on a mission,â he states, âJust to make a reportâ they told us not to fight with any curses, unless they were grade two or lower.âÂ
âStay safe then,â you remind him. âWhat about Gojo?âÂ
âNo. Gojoâs busy with something else.â
âOh, I see,â you neatly tuck the bedsheets in, military-style.Â
âI just wanted to ask,â he begins.Â
âYeah?âÂ
âIf your condition gets better by the end of today, and if you donât mind it⌠and if you have the time, I mean, this is in case we end up spending a lot of time there. I wouldnât want you to be hurt eitherââÂ
âYou want me to be there to heal you guys after youâre done?âÂ
âYeah. Um,â he clears his throat, âFor, like, the minor scrapes and bruises. Not anything else, please.âÂ
Heâs shy only when he has to ask for help, still. âI can stay the whole time if you want me toââÂ
He brings his finger to your wrist, as if heâs about to pinch it, but settles on poking you instead (it feels like a light tap). âNo, Iâd rather you rest.âÂ
âButââÂ
âNo. Just⌠I just want you to be there,â he croaks out unconfidently, phrasing his uncertain words like a question, âWhen the mission ends? After youâre done seeing your mother.âÂ
âAlright,â you sigh. âBut I think this may take a while. My parents told me it was something important,â you clarify.Â
He pats your pillow, fluffing it up. âThen are you sure youâll be safe?âÂ
âI donât know, Megumi,â you admit, âBut itâs just supposed to be a trip to my momâs hospital in Sendai. No cursed energy or cursed happenings involved here.âÂ
âDonât overexert yourself.,â Megumi ghosts his hand over yours, â⌠I donât want to see you collapsed on the infirmary bed again.âÂ
You reach out to grab a hold of his finger, squeezing it. âI wonât.âÂ
[Megumi]
Could you notify me when youâre at the hospital

[Megumi]
âŚÂ
Youâre on the Shinkansen giggling as you read through the texts on your phone. Itâs the first time youâve ever had a group of friends this big, and felt actively included in it. They all got on so well, even if they had just met. The dots flash across the little text bubble as you anticipate Megumiâs reply.Â
None of this would have ever seemed possible a few years ago, when you felt as if youâd be lonely forever.Â
Itâs an honest confession: life feels better now.Â
[Megumi]
Remember to take care of yourself
I want you to take care of yourselfÂ
Can you keep that in mind
I want you to be careful

yayy we're done! I explained this better here, but basically the next chapter, which I'll try to post soon, is the last chapter of 'part 1'. this fic is part of a bigger (and longer....) series. I've actually briefly planned the ending of the whole series since chapter 2 or 3 of this fic? and I plan to release that ending in time with the jjk anime ending rolling around...
at the heart of the matter, I just wish that whoever reads my fics is as happy as I felt writing them. I know I'm not a very good writer, so for even one person to enjoy what I write, I feel overjoyed! so, thank you so much for everything. I love you guys so much!

SYNOPSIS :: after getting megumi fushiguro's, the hyped up guitarist of 'SHADOW HANDS' (and the hottest, mysterious boy on campus), number so he could send you a link to a clothes-store, girls have been staring daggers into you ever since. its not like you're DATING the guy, you haven't even talked to him for anything else! until your childhood friend, nobara kugisaki, reveals she has a best-guy-friend, yuji itadori, who is in the SAME band as megumi, forcing you 4 to be a big friend group. its awkward, you're only comfortable with nobara, and yuji is alright... but you havent really spoken to the dark-haired boy, EVER... until one day.
notes ;; alt fashioned megumi, 'SHADOW HANDS' have 5 members - megumi (guitarist), yuji (drummer), yuta (second guitarist), choso (second drummer OR bassist if needed) and sukuna (vocals), megumi is adopted by gojo with tsumiki but mentions of toji, yearning, strangers to friends-ish to friends to fwb to lovers, lots of drama some with no context some with context, chapters have specific feelings : fluff, angst and smut (well only suggestiveness or smutty actions) -- they will be labelled in each chapter in content warnings.

the last day of college came and went. what better way to celebrate graduating than being plastered in maki and yutaâs apartment. the night started lively with yuji whipping up a disgusting concoction of vodka and mayo, transitioning into drunken karaoke where you and nobara sang your hearts out to lizzy mcalpineâs spring into summer.
after two hours of non-stop drinking, the energy in the room had died down. even the groupâs heaviest drinker, toge, could not keep going. you laid your head on megumiâs shoulder, eyes fluttering shut. just as you were about to fall asleep, yuji suggested truth or dare. it was like the bat signal, everyone immediately sat up. after a few rounds, yuji finally got the chance to give megumi a truth or dare, âmegumi i dare you to propose to y/n right now,â all heads whipped in megumiâs direction as the black haired boy sat there in silence. âiâll do you one better, iâll marry her,â
it was like his words activated the sleeper agents in all your friends. nobara and maki whisked you into makiâs room where they raided makiâs closet for something, anything in white. after stuffing you into a slightly too small white sundress, four hands pushed you out the door.
the moments leading up to it was a blur, all you could focus on was the sparkle in megumiâs eyes as voices instructed you both to sit on the couch. it wasnât perfect, megumi was in his black t-shirt, you could barely breathe through the dress and you didnât have rings to exchange but you wouldnât trade it for anything else.
âwe are gathered here today to witness the sacred union of megumi fushiguro and y/n l/n, we stand here to honour and celebrate the love shared between these two, they honestly sicken me sometimes with how much they love each other,â nobara announced, earning chuckles from everyone present.Â
âdo you, megumi fushiguro, take y/n l/n, to be your lawfully wedded wife, in sickness and in health, for poorer or for richer, do you promise to love and cherish her?â â i do,â megumi declared with a huge stupid grin on his face.
âdo you, y/n l/n, take megumi fushiguro, to be your lawfully wedded husband, in sickness and in health, for poorer or for richer, do you promise to love and cherish him?â with tears streaming down your face you whispered, âi do,â
cheers erupted as your lips brushed his.
that night just before you fell asleep, you heard megumi whisper, âi wouldâve done this sober,â
megumi and reader are both in their early twenties!
