not trying to be rude, i'm sorry. just expressing my opinion and stuff since i think it's interesting conversation. as native jp speaker, i prefer the original eng translation of slow damage. it's a little cringe at times with some of the word choices but anyway the translator did a good job. i think more literal "faithful to original" translation can have value when wanting deeper understanding of the original text, but when it comes down to it, it can make the experience stiff and awkward. language barries and differences in structure and culture make it hard to keep some details in the storytelling (like towa' narration), which is why translator change the wording in scenes to make it sound natural and less confusing. things are lost in translation, it can't be changed, but the english translation did a nice job of showing the characters' personality in english. i didn't like how the fan project was rude to the original translator in their wording, unnecessariliy calling them out. this is not hate, we are allowed our own prefereces🫶 have a good day, i like the blog✨️
oh no no, i really do understand. i don't think you're being rude. I think the original translators did a good job with slow damage in general, but there's just some scenes where it felt like they completely missed the mark of certain characters. it takes a long time to translate certain things and have them come off proper, but some times the translation doesn't have to be 100% percent faithful, it just has to be understandable.. but to the point where the original character's views and personality don't change too much. with certain pieces of towa's dialogue, he came off way more uncaring than in the original version.. the dialogue felt less. intimate.
i think that both versions of the translations have their own flaws and ups, so it cancels out. the jp version will forever be the best, because it's the original!! but yes, preferences!! i personally prefer the fan translation because it adds more depth to certain lines which the original lacked.
