Its a lesser known fact that the internet has become a human right. This means that a government can't remove the internet from its citizens. But it is still happening.

Those who have read Khaled Hosseini’s ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ will already have quite a vivid idea of what life for an Afghan women is like. Although based around fictitious characters the truth of the violence and injustice described is all too real.

 "87% of women in Afghanistan have direct experience of physical violence" – Amnesty International.

 The women of Afghanistan are vulnerable to physical violence in a whole spectrum of settings, ranging from at home with their families and within society generally. Women who speak out against this treatment are at particular risk. Improvements have been made since 2001 when the oppressive and overtly violent Taleban forces were overthrown. New laws to improve the protection of Afghanistan’s women have been passed however recently an increase in Taleban activity has brought their safety into doubt yet again. This time the Taleban are actually targeting female politicians, teachers and students at specifically girls’ schools: all crucial members of a developing Afghanistan.

“Time is running out. The Taleban are waiting and watching, and if they see us soft-pedalling on women’s rights they’ll take this as a signal that neither we nor the Afghan government are actually serious about the issue.” - Amnesty International UK Director, Kate Allen

Women’s rights in Afghanistan are a key issue for Amnesty in 2013 and brave young Afghan women have been working with members of student Amnesty groups such as ours.

You can support women’s rights in Afghanistan by signing this petition to call on the UK Government to provide sustainable support of women’s rights in the country. Amnesty is also calling for resistance to talks of reconciliation between the Afghan Government and the Taleban. The heart of this project is unity. We must ensure that the women who risk their lives for a better, brighter future for women in Afghanistan do not feel they fight alone.
