Help out a PH art student! ^-^ my university's tuition isn't cheap and I'm gonna have a lot of dues to pay for, and I'm hoping to help my parents out with the payment, save up for whatever supplies I need, and generally get my life started! One of my dreams is to be able to get my own space, especially since I live in a really tight home and I don't have the space for all my stuff. So if you want to see your favorite blorbo, or if you wanna see your OC come to life, give me a comm!
So, I'm trying out commissions! So far they're only local (altho I think GCash has an international transfer option? I don't know how that works HAHA) though I'm working on getting a PayPal! If you are going to send over a diff currency than pesos, for those with close conversion rates, feel free to use the direct conversion! I'll have different pricing for dollars ^-^
And if you can't comm me or simply aren't interested in commissioning me, please check out a couple of Palestinian gofundme's! At the same time, please remember to leave a daily click!

As if Joanne couldn't get any shittier, she misgendered and insulted a woman who called for support, all because the woman had PCOS/PMOS and "didn't sound feminine enough."
Fuck her.

So i just want to put my thoughts out there cos I havent been able to get my art kicking: phm and rotbtd have been coinciding for me as of late which has led me to make Merida & Rapunzel guardian headcanons, as well as Ryland Grace guardian headcanons! (And yeah okay Rocky too)
Merida is, of course, a guardian of the Hunt: protector and enforcer of the chase, of the youth ans autonomy of young women. Her recognized symbols are bears and horses, and she's often being related to archery (the whistle of the arrow as it's released from the string). I like thinking that she and Hiccup (side note: this bout of thinking only arose because of my reading otnwas LMAO) share the domain of freedom and autonomy!
Rapunzel, then, is the guardian of childlike curiosity! She fosters the curiosity of children, what pushes them to take up new things, explore the world, themselves! She protects that sort of passion and is present for every euphoric moment in a child's career. She and Jack Frost share the domain of fun and joy in that regard!
Ooouughh i would love to draw the rotbtd crew as guardians one day... one day...!!!!
Now onto the Project Hail Mary bits LMAO, I'd like to think Grace and Rocky become dual guardians (in the sense that Hiccup and Toothless are in otnwas) of outer world exploration (if that can even be a thing LMAO). Theyre probably a very Specific niche of protecting children, more obviously because they're the saviors of their worlds, but more that Grace only ever stuck to his mission because he desperately wished to protect his kids. In all honesty, we probably don't know enough about Rocky in the canon sense for me to make a concrete example, so if I were to on the spot make some lore for that guy, I would probably give him a pretty social life and give him a niche about community (maybe he's good with kids! Makes toys for them? (Rocky north variant 😭✌️))
Which would culminate in me calling Grace the protector of children and a cultivator of STEM-related interests, Rocky the protector of the community and the embodiment of connection; the guardians of being far away from home. They would most likely manifest if a kid, human or eridian, felt lonely on maybe a long commute trip home. They probably watch over that kid until they get home
Those are my #thoughts for tnite! My interest has slowly started shifting back to moomins (welcome back my nightmare blunt rotation) so I've no clue what I'm about to do next LMAO
Characterizing Shangmei Nezha and Ao Bing in Star-Crossed: A thought process
(aka I'm bored and want to yap about them sooo bad)
The simplicity of Nezha's and Ao Bing's characters in Nezha Conquers the Dragon King works well in the film's favour, but what do I do if I want to write a fic that revolves around their internal journies and complexities? How do I give them more dimension while keeping them recognizably the same characters (*side-eyes most Shangmei Oubing fanon*)?
So when I'm establishing character for the purpose of creating plot, the two main questions (which, really, are two sides of the same issue) I ask myself are:
What do they want more than anything?
What would they most hate to be viewed as?
The idea is to give them something to create conflict over and explore how they respond to being denied what they want, or given what they don't want. This is how I plan plot beats that align with their character arcs!
(The following are just my personal interpretations of their characters! It's certainly not the Absolute Correct way to view them; I'm just playing around in my sandbox :])
Nezha was a fairly easy character to answer these questions with. From his characterization in the film, we know that he wants to be a hero! Someone who fights on the side of the good, and protects those who deserve protecting (while punishing those who deserve punishing).
If we bring in the element of him being excited for his promised glorious fate from Investiture of the Gods, and read further into his struggle with Li Jing over whether or not his violent justice is itself justified, we can infer that Nezha does not want to be viewed as a naïve, careless child. He's eager to prove that he's already capable of making a difference, despite his age.
What makes it interesting is that Nezha is, in fact, somewhat naïve and careless. It's not really his fault---what else would you expect from a sheltered, naturally gifted seven-year-old? Then again, he's a lot more mature in some ways than his age would suggest (e.g. his confidence, sense of justice, and determination), so maybe he's not too far from realizing his flaws and growing through them.
Going by this interpretation, we have several sources of conflict: between him and forces of evil, of course, but also the question of whether or not what he's doing is actually righteous. Also, a conflict between him and others who see themselves as wiser or more just than him (parents, enemies, etc.) simply because of his age and position.
Ao Bing, on the other hand, is pretty one-note in the source material, requiring more between-the-lines reading.
First, we know that he's on fair terms with Ao Guang, with the way he offers to confront Nezha and how Ao Guang trusts him to carry it out. He's prideful and smug, labelling Nezha as inconsequential and too big for his britches (y'know, if Nezha actually wore them), and somewhat mischievous with the way he gloats to Nezha about having eaten Xiaomei.
But Ao Bing is the Third Prince, which, if you're being all critical about a film that's not really intended to be that deep, makes you wonder where the First and Second Princes are. Shouldn't they be more important to Ao Guang to lose and demand revenge for?
Another meta-narrative detail I found interesting comes from this article (thank you ryin-silverfish for first sharing it) that discusses where the artistic direction of the film could've been improved, one example being of Ao Bing's comically large arm swings as he first appears.
Machine-translated: "The action itself clashes with the context, especially since it's a move typically associated with stout, huāliǎn [painted-face] characters. It looks awkward on Ao Bing, a rather thin and frail [literally, as thin as dry firewood] character. Of course, perhaps the animator intended this comical effect."
Twink Ao Bing confirmed... /j
We could interpret this from a Watsonian perspective as well. Maybe Ao Bing is trying to embody someone bigger and more important than he actually is. With how easily he gets killed off, he's certainly not that important to the audience. And with how easily the Dragon Kings jump to carefree festivities after Nezha's death, maybe he's not that important to them, either! Can you imagine? Being so forgettable to your own family? At least Nezha never has to deal with that particular issue. ...Where was I?
Therefore we may answer the two establishing questions like this:
Ao Bing wants, more than anything, to prove his worth to his father, that he's more than just the backup prince who is only made important through the absence of his two older brothers.
Ao Bing would hate to be viewed as useless and generally irrelevant.
Taking it this way, Nezha and Ao Bing's motivations are actually quite similar. They both desire to be someone important and of value. Except, Nezha can already see, and excitedly anticipates, how he will become that person---as a general, a warrior, a hero. To him, his relationship with his father is an obstacle in the way of his destiny, something better off left behind.
Ao Bing's future is more uncertain, so he devotes himself to the path he can see: being the son and prince that his father wants him to be, or what he thinks his father wants him to be. With his identity and goals being so wrapped up with Ao Guang, and the idea of filial piety more entrenched in his mind, it is of course harder for him to ever strike his own path.
Now, put these two together in the same room and see what happens! Do they overcome their differences, or do they end in bitter separation? Only time will tell.
If you've read all the way down here, thank you for indulging me :)

I'm not trying to be offensive but what part of Scott's design reads as orientalist to you? If it's the pattern on the corset, that's a Greek pottery pattern. If it's the outfit itself, I'm not seeing how a skirt, corset, top, and cloak is reading as orientalist. I'm genuinely asking what aspects are orientalist because that's a serious thing to be throwing out without backing it up.
alright, fair enough. here's as comprehensive a breakdown as we can muster. a disclaimer: when we call this outfit Orientalist, we are referring the usage of the term popularized by Edward Said in his book on the same topic; which is to say, a reductive combination of of Asian, Middle Eastern, and generally "non-Western" cultural signifiers used to denote a group as "other" or "exotic".
"that's a Greek pottery pattern": no, it is not. that pattern is pretty clearly visually referencing Xiangyun, a traditional Chinese design motif often used in ceramics. if it is meant to be Greek, it's either very poorly conveying that fact, or someone was severely misled.
the corset itself, pattern aside: …well, it's certainly not Greek either. it does loosely resemble a fabric sash like you'd see in Turkish dress, or a somewhat Western-stylized obi sash, but we'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say it's just a generic anachronism. technically it could be considered a cummerbund, which does show up in some forms of South Asian formal dress, but we didn't know that until checking the Wikipedia page for it so, again, benefit of the doubt, generic choice but still deeply strange.
the skirt: is not a skirt. there's a seam down the middle indicating they're pants. these specifically -- where the fabric is tighter around the waist, flows out towards the bottom, and then is gathered again at the ankle -- are known as harem pants, and are a Western fashion trend explicitly based on Middle Eastern traditional dress.
the translucent pants fabric: our good friend Loudn has identified this as being very visually similar to muslin fabric, especially as depicted in Bengali dress. worth noting that the particular painting linked there is alternately called Muslim Lady Reclining or Indian Girl with a Hookah, because this is an emblematic example of the equation of two very different cultures under the broad Orientalist "desert" trope.
the cloak/shawl: we're. genuinely having trouble figuring out what this thing is even called (other than being a shawl worn like a stole specifically) but it is definitely not Greek in origin. it seems like Kashmir shawls are often worn similarly, but those are classified based on their weave and country of origin rather than outfit stylings. it kinda resembles the "bag of winds" the Japanese wind god Fūjin carries, which would be a neat nod to Greco-Buddhist syncretism if it wasn't for the literally everything else about this outfit. one friend brought up that it could be a sbai, another says it looks like a pibo, it's worn very similarly to some modern dupatta stylings, it almost seems like it could be a khata if not for those generally not being worn in the first place, oh gods was Greco-Buddhism even much of a thing we are going to have an aneurysm we cannot keep thinking about this. it's nothing. the shawl is nothing. it is a generic amalgamation of a whole swath of different forms of cultural dress, none of which are Greek.
the sleeveless top: another thing we are struggling to trace. the closest we can come to identifying it would be that it looks kind of like a non-crop-top version of the Gerudo Top from the Zelda series, which, if so, yikes, the Gerudo are notoriously an Orientalist stereotype. otherwise we're having a great deal of trouble pinning down where it's coming from because tight sleeveless tops are... somewhat ahistorical. the closest visual match we could find is the sadri, which is not worn as a sleeveless top but instead as a vest and is yet again South Asian instead of Greek.
the open-toed tights: shrugs. open-toed pantyhose exist in modern day. not Orientalist in and of itself, just ahistorical and a deeply strange design choice in general. swagever.
the outfit overall: also bears resemblance to a "belly dancer" sort of outfit. now, there is some historical precedent for Greek culture to have been one of the originators of this style of dress with the existence of the Tsifteteli style being potentially tied back to the older, less well-cited Cordax. it's still questionable, though, because belly dance is also historically used in extremely Orientalist contexts, and also if you google "Tsifteteli dance" you will very quickly run directly into the G-slur referring to the Romani people. yikes.
okay, so how is any of this a problem? well...
Pantheon Scott is for a series based on Classical/Greco-Roman mythology, with a heavy focus on Greek myth specifically. Despite this, his outfit (when not generically anachronistic) consists almost entirely of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Indian design motifs, often in a way that cannot be traced back to any actual form of cultural dress besides generic "exotic" signifiers. Because this outfit consists entirely of these articles of cultural dress used interchangeably, it consists to a view of non-Western cultures as similarly broadly interchangeable. It is reductive, it is completely unjustifiable given the context the server is supposed to take place in, and it is racist. We do not care if it's "based on the version of Aeolus in the Epic musical series." Cool. That's also a racist and Orientalist design. Do better.
Oh, and the real kicker -- Scott has also described his character as sexually promiscuous, an extremely loaded comment considering the way "exotic" Orientalist design tropes are used to similarly denote promiscuity and sexual availability (especially in French Orientalism specifically). Fucking yikes.
In conclusion, what part of Scott's design is Orientalist? All of it. The entire design. Throw it out, get a new one, we literally do not care whose idea this was, fix your shit.
ive said it before but please continue to boycott starbucks until they finalize a fair contract with the union or at the very least stop making their workers inhale silica powder for the stupid ass blended refreshers. i know a girl who was out sick for a week with respiratory issues from ts
silica dust lingers in the air for hours to days too so even if you wear a well fitted n95+ mask (which you need a doctors note and approved medical accommodation to wear) youre still at risk if you take it down at any point for eating or drinking
