Boston University, PhD in American Studies
American and New England Studies Introduction
Established in 1970, the American and New England Studies Program at Boston University has, from its inception, been dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of US society as expressed in a wide variety of forms: from media and intellectual expressions to literature and institutions. Our talented faculty represents the widest possible variety of disciplines. My own field of expertise is US history, with a particular focus on the Civil War era and the cultural afterlife of the war. My colleagues in the Department of English study, and teach about, the way texts simultaneously reflect and shape cultural life in the US. We also maintain a particularly strong commitment to the study of Art History, offering a comprehensive curriculum that covers courses in material culture, architecture, and historic landscapes as well as American painting and photography. Faculty who have been centrally involved in the program include Professors Kim Sichel, Keith Morgan, Patricia Hills, Paulo Scrivano, and Melanie Hall. In addition, William Moore, who holds a dual position in American Studies and Art History, has particular expertise in material culture studies while Claire Dempsey, our Director of Preservation Studies, also offers courses in these fields.

Boston University, Joint MA/JD in Preservation Studies
Dual Degree JD/MA in Preservation Studies
First year Boston University Law students may apply to the joint Program during their first semester in the Law School. To earn the joint JD/MA degrees, students must complete two specific courses in the Law School: Historic Preservation Law and either Land Use or Real Estate Finance. Students should also consider Administrative Law, Environmental Law, Land Use, Introduction to Federal Taxation, Federal Law, Real Estate Transactions, and Housing Law. Within the Preservation Studies Program students are required to take a total of six additional courses. Three core courses are required, AM 746 Preservation Management, AM 751 Financing for Historic Preservation and AM 754 Planning & Preservation. One course is required in preservation planning, most commonly AM 750 Neighborhood Conservation. A major project is also required, accomplished either through AM 755 Preservation Planning Colloquium or through advanced research and writing in a master’s thesis or project. Related courses offered in allied departments are described on the list of Courses. Students must achieve a grade of B- or above in each course.
Internships
Students complete a paid internship during their course of study in the Program. Internships normally consist of ten weeks of full-time paid work or its equivalent. It is commonly completed during the summer between the student’s second and third year in law school, but in some instances may be completed during the academic year. Students who have accumulated extensive experience in preservation prior to joining the Program may have this requirement waived.
JD/MA Program Special Credit Considerations
After their first year in the School of Law, students may ordinarily apply up to three GRS courses toward the JD degree, three (3) credits per semester or twelve (12) credits in total. Rules governing the accreditation of law schools require that the School of Law grant credit according to the number of hours a course meets per week. Therefore, Graduate School courses that meet three hours per week earn only three credits toward the JD degree. During their three years of law school, students in the dual degree program pay only one tuition, to the School of Law. After their graduation from law school they pay tuition to the Graduate School for the completion of their MA degree requirements.
Typical program
Year One: First year LAW program only. Apply to Preservation Studies Program in GRS in January.
Year Two: Each semester three or more LAW courses and one Preservation Studies course.
Year Three: Each semester three or more LAW courses and one Preservation Studies course. JD degree awarded at the end of this year.
Year Four: Four additional courses in Preservation Studies, including either AM 755 Preservation Planning Colloquium or master’s thesis or project. MA degree awarded at the completion of requirements.

KKK gets free speech, gets trolled.
The state supreme court ruled that the Missouri KKK would be allowed to adopt a stretch of I-55 in Missouri, so the good people of Missouri marked the occasion by rechristening that stretch of highway:
Potato Soup
6 small or 4 large potatoes
1 pint half and half (milk)
1 stick of butter
½ cup flour
1 lb. bacon
green onions
¾ block of cheddar cheese
3-4 heaping tablespoons of sour cream
2 cans of chicken broth
1 medium onion
regular milk
Fry bacon. Microwave potatoes until soft and peel. Make a light roux with flour and butter, add onion cook for a while. Add chicken broth, then all the ingredients, add regular milk if you need to make it thinner. Top with green onions before serving.
"The Story of Bonnie and Clyde"
Originally Titled "At Trail's End" by Bonnie Parker
You've read the story of Jesse James Of how he lived and died; If you're still in need Of something to read, Here's the story of Bonnie and Clyde.
Now Bonnie and Clyde are the Barrow gang, I'm sure you all have read How they rob and steal And those who squeal Are usually found dying or dead.
There's lots of untruths to these write-ups; They're not so ruthless as that; Their nature is raw; They hate all the law The stool pigeons, spotters, and rats.
They call them cold-blooded killers; They say they are heartless and mean; But I say this with pride, That I once knew Clyde When he was honest and upright and clean.
But the laws fooled around, Kept taking him down And locking him up in a cell, Till he said to me, "I'll never be free, So I'll meet a few of them in hell."
The road was so dimly lighted; There were no highway signs to guide; But they made up their minds If all roads were blind, They wouldn't give up till they died.
The road gets dimmer and dimmer; Sometimes you can hardly see; But it's fight, man to man, And do all you can, For they know they can never be free.
From heart-break some people have suffered; From weariness some people have died; But take it all in all, Our troubles are small Till we get like Bonnie and Clyde.
If a policeman is killed in Dallas, And they have no clue or guide; If they can't find a fiend, They just wipe their slate clean And hand it on Bonnie and Clyde.
There's two crimes committed in America Not accredited to the Barrow mob; They had no hand In the kidnap demand, Nor the Kansas City depot job.
A newsboy once said to his buddy; "I wish old Clyde would get jumped; In these awful hard times We'd make a few dimes If five or six cops would get bumped."
The police haven't got the report yet, But Clyde called me up today; He said, "Don't start any fights We aren't working nights We're joining the NRA."
From Irving to West Dallas viaduct Is known as the Great Divide, Where the women are kin, And the men are men, And they won't "stool" on Bonnie and Clyde.
If they try to act like citizens And rent them a nice little flat, About the third night They're invited to fight By a sub-gun's rat-tat-tat.
They don't think they're too tough or desperate, They know that the law always wins; They've been shot at before, But they do not ignore That death is the wages of sin.
Some day they'll go down together; And they'll bury them side by side; To few it'll be grief To the law a relief But it's death for Bonnie and Clyde.

Important moments in history: Osama Bin Laden's death.
Children's Movies that Encourage Historic Preservation
Hey Arnold! The Movie: Arnold and the gang have to fight against a major corporate sleaze ball who is going to buy out and demolish his neighborhood. To save it Arnold and Gerald go off in search of a document which will prove that the neighborhood is a national historical landmark because of a little known rebellion that occurred there during the American Revolution and must be saved. It doesn't get any more grass-roots than a group of fourth graders passing out fliers and old ladies chaining themselves to doors.
A big time racecar ends up in a dying small town along Route 66, "The Mother Road" as the residents call it. The racecar, Lightning McQueen, falls in love with the town and its eccentric residents and uses his fame to help bring attention to the town and eventually bring revitalization and hope. The movie even features well known Route 66 historians and enthusiasts as the voices and inspiration for characters such as the sheriff and the hippie and land marks, such as the Cozy-Cone Motel were inspired by actual locations like the wigwam motel.
In the search for the world's greatest treasure, Ben Gates and friends stop at some of the nation's greatest and most famous landmarks, including Liberty Hall in Philadelphia and New York's Trinity Church. Okay, so this one is more heritage/historical tourism, but if you don't preserve the landmarks you never know what wonderful treasures you may be destroying in the process.
One of the key elements of the movie is Tiana's dream of renovating an old sugar mill and turning it into New Orleans' most fabulous restaurant. The movie has a beautiful scene "Almost There" where Tiana envisions the transformation with some snazzy Harlem-Renaissance-style animation. Tiana isn't afraid to dream big and knows the value of hard work, both of which are necessary for preservationists. Just as importantly it shows that a building can change with the times--that what was once an old mill can come into a snazzy new restaurant.
Ok, maybe this one is just me, but the scenes where Anastasia returns to the palace and we see the contrast between the past glory and current dilapidation makes me want to see the palace (and the rest of the country) returned to its former glory. Just don't take this one as an actual history of Russia anymore than you should take Pocahontas as an accurate retelling of that story.
