Shells
I shattered the seashells you found
when we were walking along the shoreline, dipping toes
into foam and salt. Iâd pocketed them happily but
I was careless, and the next time I reached for them
they were nothing but sand dust.
I didnât mean to, like we all donât mean a lot
of things, like how I never mean to ignore you
or act like I donât care. Sometimes we just crush the seashells,
take a mindless wrong step, a forgetful wrong turn.
In this case, is it the thought that counts?
I think to myself that Iâll find the best
seashells for you next time, Iâll keep them safe and save
them for a special day. Itâs the worst way to break
something when you do it accidentally â how do you
apologize for that, anyway. Iâm sorry,
I didnât mean to break your heart.
Luckily for me, the oceanâs got a thousand more
to share. At least I donât have to go about saying
Iâm sorry, I shattered these shells.
