I was pretty isolated in those days, having just finally pulled myself out of a sketchy and emotionally abusive relationship, convinced in that moment that everything that happened to me was my fault. By the time I was raped, staying silent was a skill that came naturally to me. I kept it to myself until it nearly destroyed my whole life, until I had no choice but to tell somebody. Sharing what happened is never going to be easy. But it taught me something: either you own your story, or your story owns you.
