how I used past papers
When studying for a levels and gcses past papers are the most useful tools. Here’s how I used them when I was at school…
1. organise yourself - figure out how many past papers you have and stagger them sensibly throughout the revision period. Check other exam boards in case they produce similar papers you can use for extra revision. Ask your teacher for access to the most recent papers which aren’t online. Leave the most recent past paper you have until last - I used to do it a few days before the exam.
2. do each past paper for the first time - complete the paper in exam conditions.
3. mark and analyse your results - use the online mark scheme to mark the paper. Create a grid (see picture above) that shows each question, the topic covered in the question, your mark, your percentage correct on that questions, and whether that percentage is green (full marks), amber (ok marks), or red (low marks).
4. read the examiner’s report - this will show the common mistakes students made, and may also highlight what the examiner’s look for every year.
5. revise the problem areas - revise the areas you got amber/red scores for e.g. create posters, type the information up with extra context, and of course: read, cover, rewrite (and repeat).
6. after a delay, redo the paper - again, in exam conditions (although you probably won’t need as long). This will solidify the information!
05.01.19 - I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! it’s so important to have breaks and days off in any profession, including when you’re student. i’ve been for a long walk and watched a bunch of brooklyn 99 episodes...
04.01.19 - today has been a bit manic running round getting lots of little jobs done! bring on the weekend...
03.01.19 - today I got rejected from a graduate scheme. I guess it just wasn’t the right job for me. i’ve been letting myself sit in the disappointment for a bit, and trying to remember that these things happen <3

01.01.19 - Happy New Year everyone! I hope you have all had time to relax and get away from work over the holidays <3
how i write my (uni) essays
this is how i write essays for my psychology undergraduate degree! i’m guessing this advice won’t be useful for many other disciplines - let me know how your process differs...
1. read (around) the question; once i receive the essay question/topic, i do an initial literature search on Google Scholar using the essay key word(s). i read the paper titles to get a feel for the area, and then read/skim the most heavily cited papers and any recent review papers. i make general notes on the themes/ideas that come up, and follow up with interesting/relevant papers cited by or which cite the key articles. i always feel lost as first, but the key findings, arguments and unanswered questions will emerge after a decent amount of reading!
2. detailed reading; once i’ve identified the key topics or arguments i need to to address, i start making detailed notes on the relevant papers. i usually make a big table in a word-document which with each study in a row, and columns including APA citation, year of publication, number of citations, themes, and detailed notes/thoughts. making detailed notes helps you properly understand the papers, and allow you to write a plan without constantly shuffling through the articles. make the notes in your own words to prevent plagiarism!!
3. a DETAILED plan; my essay plans are hardcore. for each paragraph in my plan i explicitly write the point/argument i’m making, and then write (in order) each piece of information I need to make the point AND the references i’ll use. this should help you make every paragraph relevant and purposeful. make sure the paragraphs flow to form a clear central thesis. for me, writing the plan and developing my central argument happen concurrently and help each other along.
4. first draft; this is (fairly) easy if you have a detailed plan, especially if you allow your first draft to be crappy. imo, there’s no point writing an eloquent first draft as you always end up reorganising ideas and cutting/adding bits - it’s so much harder to do this when you’ve taken the time to write beautiful sentences. it also makes me feel much better to get everything out.
nb: i always plan and write my essays out of order. i always start writing/planning with the idea i understand best, then i go forwards/backwards to more challenging ideas once i’m in the flow. the intro/conclusion come last.
5. re-read, refine, break, repeat; after a break from the essay, edit it for the clarity of your ideas. logically re-think through your arguments as if you were new to the essay; does the reader have enough information yet to understand this argument? have i explicitly made a point, or assumed the reader has made the connection? make sure from introduction to conclusion you are clearly and consistently making your argument, and cut out anything irrelevant. finally, edit for flow and ease of reading. when writing scientific essays, i always opt for concise expression rather than trying to sound academic using long words and sentences.
good luck!
05.09.18 - Today I enjoyed some lovely long walks with my parents before doing some dissertation research. I’m trying to get prepared for my first meeting with my dissertation supervisor in a few weeks time where I’ll present my ideas/what I’ve done over the summer... eek!
03.09.18 - It’s the first week of September which means all British school students are back at school or about to start again, and most British university students are getting ready to go back! Good luck to everyone, especially if you’re joining a new institution...

01.09.18 - I’m headed back to university for my final year today. I can’t believe three years ago I was driving up with my parents for the first time! I was absolutely petrified and extremeeelllyyy emotional. I’m so glad that things are easier now I have a home and group of friends to come back to :)
31.08.18 - In-between packing for university I’ve been doing some reading for a module I’m taking next semester. I’m excited about this module, but I know there’s a lot of reading so I’m trying to get at least a week ahead.
29.08.18 - I’m officially back from holiday and now have less than a week to pack up my life before heading back to uni for my final year. I’m planning to spend my last few days packing, reading some articles for my dissertation (argh) and walking in the local countryside - I miss it so much when I’m away!
27.08.18 - Today is a good day because the first episode of My Dad Wrote A Porno season four was released! I hope you are all enjoying the last month of summer :)
26.08.18 - I can’t believe the summer is almost over :( I’ve been enjoying the beautiful European weather on holiday for the last week and am not looking forward to getting back to work after this...

24.08.18 - Shopping for a new semester is the maybe the best part of starting a new semester. I love buying stationery and setting up academia diary!
22.08.18 - I’ve been attempting to prepare for the year ahead by planning my dissertation. I researched and came up with an idea I like earlier in the summer, but then did nothing further. I’ve been attempting to read some articles, but motivating yourself outside of the university term is so hard...
