Under Another Sky

Leaving the main street, tight homes and buildings greet me with their colorfull roofs; they’re made of wood and sheet metal, worn out by time and salty air. Something’s odd however… some windows aren’t straight, some walls have cracks down to the base. Looking around I understand: the city was hit by a terrible earthquake who shook Chile in 1960; some kilometres to my right I can see now the modern Puerto Montt, but here the old scars are clearly visible and a few buildings were simply not fixed, leaved there empty and closed forever. The inn is wonderful, I’m the only guest and I have a spectacular window looking down to the bay. I fall asleep looking at the clouds changing colours in the evening.

I wake up with no energy and the clear desire to spend a conspicuous part of the day in bed. However, the breakfast is included, so I go downstairs to the dining hall of the family running the inn. A general-like granny is managing the kitchen, a couple of grandsons and a husband impervious to her orders: I smile to the children and help the older one shooting to some monsters. Soon the granny and my breakfast emerge from the kitchen and while eating I ask information about the surroundings: “You have to visit the fish market in Angelmó!” No excuses, it’s not a day to spend in bed! She’s right… the walk to the market is along the coast line, the air is cold but the low sun makes it comfortable. I go straight deep in the fiord where the port is located; it’s not a fancy touristic marina, but a commercial harbour: ships go in and out, containers are moved around, fishing boats are repaired and refurbished. “This is the door to Tierra de Fuego!” tells me one of the fishermen; it’s true, I have a clear feeling of frontier.

Despite the presence of the port, there is a sort of silence near the fish market, the only noises are seagulls screaming and an old man steering a small motorboat.

The market is a convoluted dark-pink building alternating touristic restaurants to fish vendors; nothing particular catches my eyes. A little deluded, I move to the shore in the back of the market to see the rest of the fiord. Water seems very cold, and crystal clear. Suddenly they emerge: a group of four seals reach the surface, a couple of meters away. My surprise is so overwhelming that I almost forget that I have a camera, that I’m tired and weary, that it was a long journey.

In Ecuador, guardo il cielo e immagino di vederla. E piango a lungo, per quasi un’ora.

Cassini è stata protagonista della mia tesina all’esame di Maturità, mi ha accompagnato durante gli studi di ingegneria aerospaziale, conosco ogni strumento, ogni soluzione tecnica, come è stata costruita e pensata, ho ascoltato col cuore in gola l’audio della discesa su Titano del lander Huygens (passeggero della Cassini), è stato il primo canale Twitter che ho cercato quando mi sono iscritto al social network. Ho letto tutto, visto tutte le foto, qualsiasi cosa la NASA abbia pubblicato, l’ho assorbita. Perché io volevo essere là, io volevo essere parte di quel mondo, io volevo stare in quelle sale di controllo ed essere protagonista di una delle più grandi imprese dell’umanità: l’esplorazione dello spazio.

In Ecuador, I look to the sky and imagine seeing her. And I cry for a long time, almost an hour.

Cassini was the protagonist of my final project at the end of high school, she accompanied me while studying Aerospace Engineering; I know every instrument, every technical solution, as it was built and designed, I listened with heart pounding to the sound of Huygens lander (Cassini passenger) while descending on Titan; it was the first channel on Twitter that I followed when I joined the social network. I read everything, see all photos, anything NASA has published, I absorbed. Because I wanted to be there, I wanted to be part of that world, I wanted to be in those control rooms and be protagonist of one of the greatest endeavors of humanity: space exploration.

Elisa è la prima donna che ho amato, l’unica donna che abbia mai amato veramente; l’unica che mi abbia fatto battere il cuore fuori dal petto, e che me lo abbia rimesso ogni volta là dietro alle costole dove deve stare. Abbiamo esplorato assieme gioia, dolore, sofferenza, passione e il bisogno irresponsabile di stare uno a fianco dell’altra. Perché io volevo essere là, con lei, davanti a quell’altare, in quel letto, in quella casa, ed essere la metà di qualcosa di straordinario: una vita immaginata e costruita assieme.

In Ecuador, I look to the clouds and imagine seeing her. And I cry for a long time, again.

Elisa is the first woman I loved, the only woman I ever really loved; the only one that made my heart beat out of my chest, and put it back every time, back there behind the ribs where it belongs. We explored together joy, pain, suffering, passion and the irresponsible need to stand one alongside the other. Because I wanted to be there, with her, in front of that altar, in that bed, in that house, and be the half of something extraordinary: a life imagined and built together.

Ma ciò che vogliamo non conta, la vita che immaginiamo non esiste, e all’universo nulla importa di ciò che abbiamo desiderato nel nostro cuore. Il destino nemmeno ride dei nostri progetti: è solo una cieca forza che ci trascina assieme al resto del cosmo, del tutto insignificanti. È termodinamica, niente di personale.

Non sarò mai un ingegnere impegnato in missioni spaziali, non sarò mai il compagno dell’unica donna che abbia mai amato. I simboli di questi due sogni infranti svaniscono oggi davanti ai miei occhi in lacrime.

La cosa curiosa è che l’universo non ci lascia a mani vuote: in cambio dei nostri sogni, ci viene sempre dato qualcos’altro. A me è stato dato questo:

But what we want doesn't count, the life we imagine does not exist, and to the universe nothing matters of what we desired in our hearts. The fate doesn’t even laugh to our projects: it’s only a blind force that drags us along with the rest of the cosmos, utterly insignificants. It’s thermodynamics, nothing personal.

I’ll never be an engineer involved in space missions; I'll never be the mate of the only woman I ever loved. The symbols of these broken dreams vanish today before my eyes in tears.

The curious thing is that the universe does not leave us empty-handed: in return for our dreams, we are always given something else. I was given this:

Non c’è nulla qui, solo piccole capanne, sbocciate insieme al riso dalle pozze allagate delle risaie. Le persone vivono di quel poco che coltivano, nemmeno posseggono la terra su cui si spaccano la schiena.

There is nothing here, only small huts, blossomed with the rice from the watered ponds of the rice fields. People make their living out of what they can cultivate, they do not even possess the fields where they break their backs every day.

Sullo sfondo, i palazzi della grande città ricordano delle sirene: cantano promesse, a questa gente, che non potranno mai mantenere; sogni che non potranno mai avverarsi. Perché se sei così povero, puoi solo vivere di quello che sai estrarre dalla terra, dal fango, dal sudore: difficile che tu possa mai avere abbastanza denaro, un’occasione abbastanza buona, da farti compiere il grande salto energetico e spostarti in città. Forse i tuoi figli, se mai riusciranno ad andare a scuola. Molti ci provano lo stesso, molti tentano la fortuna, idealizzando la città come la terra promessa delle opportunità; è il meccanismo principale che dà vita alle favelas di São Paulo, ai cerros di Lima, alle periferie di Milano, ai campi profughi in Libano e a decine di altri luoghi come questi. Se non hai niente, anche un miraggio è meglio di niente. Alcuni ce la fanno davvero, e diventano i soggetti idealizzati delle favole moderne con cui tutti noi, che abbiamo qualcosa in più di niente, plachiamo la nostra coscienza: “vedi che se ti impegni, ce la puoi fare? Se sei povero è solo colpa tua.”

In the distance, the tall buildings of the city seem like sirens: they chant promises, to this people, they will never be able to keep; dreams that will never come true. Because if you are so poor, you can live only of what you can extract from earth, mud and sweat: it is unlikely you will ever have enough money, a good enough chance, to make the big jump to the next energy level and move to the city. Maybe your children, if they will ever be able to go to school. Many, nevertheless, try to do it; many try their luck, idealizing the city as the promised land of opportunities; this is the main mechanism fuelling the favelas in São Paulo, the cerros in Lima, the hinterland around Milan, the refugee camps in Lebanon and tens of other places like these. If you have nothing, even a mirage is better than nothing. Some actually make it, and become idealized subjects of modern fables with which all of us, that have something more than nothing, calm down our conscience: “you see that if you commit, you can do it? If you are poor it is your own fault.“

Allora perché queste persone dovrebbero restare nella campagna? Cosa c’è qui, per questa gente, oltre a fatica, una vita breve, malattie, figli morti giovani e generalmente sofferenza? Sono anni che me lo domando, non trovo mai risposta. Una cosa però c’è, ed è la più importante di tutte: bellezza. La natura è forte in queste terre, popolate da uccelli, pesci, insetti: migliaia di varietà differenti che non mi è facile fotografare dall’auto in corsa sulle piste sterrate.

So why these people should remain in the countryside? What there is here, for these people, other than fatigue, a short life, diseases, children died young and generally suffering? For years I wondered, I have never found a response. But one thing there is, and it is the most important of all: beauty. Nature is strong in these lands populated by birds, fishes, insects: thousands of different varieties that is not easy to photograph from the car running on dirt tracks.

È in mezzo a uno di questi che spunta il primo umano; un bimbo, sorpreso quanto me di incrociare la propria vita con le nostre. “Voi che ci fate qui? Qui non c’è niente…”

It is in the midst of one of these that the first human appears; a little boy, as surprised as me to cross his life with ours. "What are you doing here? Here there is nothing… ”

“… a parte la mia famiglia, la mia casa, la mia felicità”.

“… a part of my family, my house, my happiness”.

Sorrido del suo sorriso, l’auto sobbalza sulla minuscola striscia di fango e buche; se dovessimo incrociare un altro veicolo sarebbe un vero problema. Quale altro veicolo? mi domando poi. La nostra destinazione è l’unico edificio in mattoni per chilometri, costruito su uno dei pochi ritagli di terraferma; è una scuola, baluardo eretto a difesa di una opportunità di vita migliore. Eppure appare così fragile… è una zattera, che galleggia all’orizzonte. Come noi, le persone delle varie comunità stanno convergendo qui: arrivano a piedi, lentamente, lungo sentieri imprevedibili e piste sconnesse. È arrivato il missionario, porta la parola di Dio; qualsiasi cosa sia. Alla fine della celebrazione, una messa semplificata nei suoi elementi basilari, domanderò a Padre Giampaolo perché non gli hanno chiesto la comunione: “perché non sanno nemmeno cosa sia…” Mentre li catturo in qualche scatto, sembrano un po’ perplessi: “che cosa fotografi? Non c’è niente qui…”

I smile of his smile, the car jumps on the tiny strip of mud and potholes; if we cross another vehicle, it would be a real problem. What other vehicle? I wonder then. Our destination is the only building made of bricks in kilometres, built on one of the few scraps of dryland available; it is a school, a bastion built in defence of the opportunity for a better life. Yet it appears so fragile … is a raft, floating on the horizon. Like us, the people of various communities are converging here: they arrive on foot, slowly, along unpredictable paths and bumpy tracks. The missionary has arrived, he brings the word of God; whatever it is. At the end of the celebration, a liturgy simplified to its basic elements, I ask Father Giampaolo why they did not ask for the communion: “because they don’t even know what it is…” While I catch them in some shots, they seem a little puzzled: “why are you shooting? Here there is nothing…”

Ci siete voi, che siete diversi da me; i vostri volti, i vostri corpi, le vostre mani sono nati da questa terra e da questa acqua. Sono la stessa cosa, e sono pieni di vita!

There is all of you, that are different from me; your faces, your bodies, your hands are born to this land and from this water. They are the same thing, and they are full of life!

Sulla via del ritorno visitiamo una fattoria, per una messa più tradizionale. Qui c'è spazio per una tragica storia d'amore. Umani crudeli hanno tagliato le penne remiganti a lui in modo che non possa volare via mai più:

On the way back we visit a farm, for a more traditional mass. Here there is room for a tragic love story. Cruel humans have cut the flight feathers to him, so that he cannot fly away anymore:

Lei, la sua compagna per la vita, ha rinunciato a tutta la propria libertà per restare al suo fianco.

Her, his life partner, renounced to all her freedom to stay by his side.

Quando domando perché gli è stato fatto questo, "perché ci piace averli qui, sono molto belli”, la ferocia dietro tanta bellezza mi si rivela nella sua nuda semplicità. Forse posso vedere la bellezza in questo posto solo perché qualcuno non mi ha incatenato qui per sempre.

Nel vento dentro le nuvole e le stelle, devo scrivere in fretta: non ho molto tempo prima che mi si gelino le mani e le ossa.

Questa storia inizia lontano da qui, inizia in un bel pomeriggio a Quito, in un convento di suore salesiane; siamo lì per recuperare un uomo dal grande entusiasmo, che non esita un momento a raccontarmi dei suoi progetti, che non vede l’ora di condividere con me un pezzo importante della sua vita. Io una rotta segnata sulla mia mappa ancora non ce l’ho, e questa mi intriga: allora alla via così, seguiamo questa corrente.

La corrente mi porterà in alto, a oltre 3500 m, in una natura incredibile e mi darà anche un motivo per tornare, un’avventura da vivere, un lavoro per guadagnarmi da vivere e tante persone che ora faccio fatica ad abbandonare. Credo che la parola che sto cercando assomigli molto a Casa.

Qui sono stato accolto per quello che sono, per quello che ho potuto dare. Nulla di più. Come sempre ho ricevuto molto più di quello che ho dato o di quello che ho perso. Il semplice paesaggio, dolce e placido nelle sue colline e nei suoi boschi, aspro e duro quando mi strappa l’aria dai polmoni mentre arranco in salita, mi restituisce ogni giorno uno spirito ripulito di ogni pena.

Un’anziana signora percorre lentamente i prati con il suo cane; chissà dove sta andando, il silenzio dell’umanità è totale, i suoni della natura indisturbati.

Qui ho incontrato un Capitano, che gentilmente, con il suo impegno e il suo lavoro, guida la sua gente; dedicando due anni della sua vita a questo luogo, se ne è guadagnato il rispetto; un’impresa non da poco, in una comunità di montanari. Ora per lui è tempo di partire, ed è con lui che mi incamminerò anche io. Alla via così, Capitano.

Qui vive un uomo esattamente al centro di un caos grandioso, che si illumina nell’affondare le mani nella terra, nelle api, nelle sue piante; penso lo faccia perché la sua anima vola molto al di sopra delle nostre: gli ho visto perdere una infinità di oggetti, per lui non hanno davvero importanza, e poi come per magia ho visto il caos turbinare ancora e quegli oggetti ritrovarlo di nuovo.

Lontano, all’altro lato della valle, qualcuno suona un flauto, mentre con il suo lama ritorna verso casa; dove trovi il fiato per suonare, è per me un mistero.

Qui lavora una donna dal sorriso burlone, dalla forza non comune; credo che il suo cuore batta cioccolato, al posto del sangue. Le ho visto la gioia negli occhi, l’impegno nelle mani, la concentrazione in volto, mentre compiva la sua magia e trasformava pochi ingredienti – cacao, zucchero, marzapane – in deliziose creazioni, mentre studiava la prossima opera, con l’amore che solo una passione assoluta può mettere nelle cose.

Qui si può incontrare un’altra donna, bellissima nella femminilità che si ostina a nascondere, ma che prorompe quando all’improvviso rientra a casa e con la sua gioia discreta e la sua voce squillante abbraccia tutti quanti. L’ho ammirata lottare quasi da sola contro un’ingiustizia schiacciante, contro l’indifferenza di molti, di coloro che per primi si sarebbero dovuti schierare al suo fianco. L’ho vista lottare semplicemente perché era giusto, perché qualcuno doveva farlo. Per tutte le donne.

Qui, in cima a Salinas, abita una delle donne più toste che abbia mai incontrato; la sua determinazione le dà forza, il suo humor e la sua intelligenza bellezza. Correre con lei sul retro di un pickup, verso Guaranda, commentando tutto quello che ci circonda e oltre, è un piacere raro; come prendere un caffè assieme, raccontandoci dei nostri rispettivi paesi, esperienze, vite.

Qui, un po’ lontane dalla città, vivono due persone innamorate, per davvero. In una notte di emergenza, nella jungla, lui è dovuto partire lungo una strada difficile per aiutare un ragazzo ferito, lei è rimasta ad aspettare che tornasse, seduta sul bordo della sedia. Quando finalmente ha sentito di nuovo il rumore del fuoristrada, si è alzata senza dire una parola, è andata all’ingresso della capanna, ed è rimasta lì ferma e bellissima, ad aspettarlo; lui le è andato incontro, gli occhi fissi nei suoi: è andato tutto bene, abbracciami.

Siamo entrati ormai del tutto nelle nuvole, almeno il vento è calato; ormai tutto è bianco, la città una sagoma vuota. Solo le vacche sembrano insensibili al freddo; è ora di rientrare.

Domani parto per il Perù; tutto questo non tornerà mai più: alcune di queste persone che hanno sfiorato la mia vita, che mi hanno reso migliore, che mi hanno reso più forte, più felice, forse non le incontrerò mai più.

Non sono triste: noi siamo viaggiatori, questo è ciò che abbiamo scelto. Questo è il prezzo che paghiamo.

Di una cosa sono certo: io non dimenticherò. Perché qui, dopo tanto tempo, l’ho sentito di nuovo salirmi alle labbra: “Qui è dove io Sono”.

It has been a long time since my last post; but, please, understand me: I was very busy living.

The story is simple: I arrived in Salinas de Guaranda (not the one on the Coast, warm)... and I have not yet left. I will leave the description of what is Salinas to another post and other photos, this story is about what I have found here.

In the wind inside clouds and stars, I have to write fast: I don’t have much time until my hands and bones freeze.

This story starts far from here, starts in a beautiful afternoon in Quito, in a convent of Salesian nuns; we are there to pick up a very passionate man, who does not hesitate a moment to tell me about his projects, who could not wait to share with me an important part of his life. There is not a route on my map, and this one intrigues me: therefore, gently as she goes, let us follow this tide.

The tide will bring me high, over 3500 m, in an incredible Nature and will give me also a reason to come back, an adventure to live, a job to earn my living and many persons that now I find hard to abandon. I believe the word I am looking for sounds a lot like Home.

Here I have been accepted for what I am, for what I was able to give. Nothing more. As usual, I have received much more than I have given or lost. Take simply the landscape, sweet and placid with its hills and its forests, rough and tough when it rips the air out of my lungs while trudging uphill; it gives me back every day my spirit cleaned of every pain.

An elderly woman walks slowly the meadows with her dog; who knows where she’s going, the silence of humanity is total, the sounds of Nature undisturbed.

Here I have met a Captain who, politely, with his commitment and his work, leads his people; by devoting two years of his life to this place, he has earned its respect; not an easy task in a community of mountaineers. Now it is time for him to leave, and it is with him that I will walk too. Gently as she goes, Captain.

Here lives a man right in the middle of a magnificent chaos, which shines when sinking his hands into earth, into bees, into his plants. I believe he does it because his soul is flying far above ours: I have seen him loose a multitude of objects, to him they do not really matter, and then like a magic I have seen the chaos swirl again and those objects find him again.

Far away, on the other side of the valley, someone plays a flute, while going back home with his llama; where did he find the breath to play, is to me a mystery.

Here works a woman with a smirking smile, with an out of the ordinary strength; I think her heart beats chocolate, instead of blood. I saw the joy in her eyes, the commitment in the hands, the concentration in the face, while she worked her magic, transforming a few ingredients – cocoa, sugar, Marzipan – in delicious creations, while studying the next piece, with the love that only an absolute passion can put in things.

Here you can meet another woman, beautiful in the womanhood that she persists in hiding, but that breaks out when suddenly she comes back home and with her discreet joy and her shrill voice embraces everybody. I admired her fight almost alone against an overwhelming injustice, against the indifference of many, of those who first should have lined up alongside her. I saw her fight simply because it was right, because someone had to do it. For all women.

Here, on top of Salinas, lives one of the most tough women I have ever met; her determination gives her strength, her humour and intelligence beauty. Running with her on the back of a pickup, to Guaranda, commenting on everything around us and beyond, was a rare pleasure; like taking a coffee together, telling each other about our countries, experiences, lives.

Here, a bit far from the city, live two persons in love, for real. In a night of emergency, in the jungle, he had to depart along a difficult road to help a wounded boy; she remained waiting for him to come back, sitting on the edge of the chair. When she finally heard the car coming back, she got up without saying a word, went to the entrance of the hut, and remained there still and beautiful, waiting for him; he came to her, his eyes fixed on hers: everything went fine, hug me.

We are now completely inside the clouds, at least the wind has dropped; now everything is white, the city an empty shape. Only the cows seem insensitive to the cold; it’s time to go back.

Tomorrow I am leaving for Peru; all this will never return: some of these people who have touched my life, made me better, made me stronger, happier, perhaps I will never meet them again.

I am not sad: we are travellers, this is what we chose. This is the price we pay.

Mi trovo a Salinas, vicino a Guaranda (Provincia di Bolìvar); è una ridente cittadina a 3300 m, nelle meravigliose montagne attorno al Chimborazo. Mi hanno tirato dentro a un progetto che prevede attività come picconare terra, spostare terra, scavare terra, compattare terra, colare cemento, rompere cemento e infine colare altro cemento. Poi ci sono i tubi: misura tubi, taglia tubi, incolla tubi, fagli fare amicizia con il cemento. Alla fine ne uscirà un fito-depuratore. Dopo altri 200 metri cubi di ghiaia.

Tutto questo si svolge in una minuscola cittadina sotto Salinas: Chaso Juan. Che ho il forte sospetto non esista. La strada per scendere invece presto non esisterà più se continua a franare nel modo in cui sta franando; in compenso ci regala panorami tipo questo:

Our destination is exactly into the cloud at the bottom of the valley; it's not on any map and can’t be seen even from the satellite: there's a cloud over there. Probably.

Around 1200 m a globe of moisture is chewing our street: we cut straight into the white and come out, a few minutes later, in the middle of the jungle. The universe has decided that here the sky let’s colour it in white, that blue is boring and with the moist and green doesn’t get along so much.

Chaso Juan doesn’t exist, but at least is full of things: a village of poor houses, poor people, three poor shops, rich and powerful nature. If you don’t keep an eye on it you’ll be eaten while you’re still alive: one morning I throw a banana peel in the middle of the meadow, after lunch you could see only the silhouette.

Our accommodation is a nice house in a nice strip of jungle, where there are other houses, orchards, a lab and a swimming pool; all goes under the name Granja. Only that the jungle is eating them all so they taste about mould, lichens, bats, butterflies, frogs, cockroaches and other green stuff. Parrots just smirk at me from the trees, far away enough to be bad in the photos.

La nostra destinazione è esattamente dentro la nuvola in fondo alla valle; non sta su nessuna mappa e non si vede nemmeno dal satellite: c’è sopra una nuvola. Probabilmente.

Intorno ai 1200 m il globo di umidità si mangiucchia la nostra strada: tagliamo dritti nel bianco e sbuchiamo, dopo qualche minuto, in mezzo alla jungla. L’universo ha deciso che qui il cielo lo coloravano di bianco, che l’azzurro poi stufa e con l’umido e il verde non centra poi molto.

Chaso Juan non esiste, ma in compenso è piena di cose: un agglomerato di case povere, gente povera, tre negozietti poveri, natura ricca e potente, che se non stai attento ti mangia mentre sei ancora vivo: una mattina ho gettato una buccia di banana in mezzo a un prato, dopo pranzo si vedeva solo la sagoma.

Il nostro alloggio è una bella casa in mezzo a una bella striscia di jungla, dove ci sono altre case, orti, un laboratorio e una piscina; il tutto conosciuto come Granja. Solo che la jungla se li sta mangiando tutti e quindi sanno di muffa, pipistrelli, licheni, farfalle, rane, blatte e altra roba verde. I pappagalli mi sfottono dagli alberi, abbastanza lontani da venire male nelle foto.

The first night goes on smoothly, for bats and two or three hundred other animals placed outside my mosquito net; I'm laughing and snoring with much pleasure, until something starts climbing up my legs: it will never reach the summit, but will rather be serenely accompanied out of the way.

In the morning, we hear knocking on the stairs at the entrance. It’s a horse.

While I turn to ask how the hell a horse is knocking at the door, the horse starts biting my shoes, with my feet inside. The horse too is serenely accompanied out of the way.

We discover it’s name is Callus and is crazy, as well as very touchy.

He likes to roll in the mud:

La prima notte passa serena, per i pipistrelli e due o trecento altri animali posizionati fuori dalla mia zanzariera; io me la rido e me la russo, finché qualcosa non comincia ad arrampicarsi lungo le gambe: non raggiungerà mai la vetta, ma verrà piuttosto accompagnata serenamente fuori dalle scatole.

La mattina bussano sulle scale d’ingresso. È un cavallo.

Mentre mi giro per chiedere per quale diavolo di motivo un cavallo sta bussando alla porta, il cavallo si mette a mangiarmi le scarpe, con i miei piedi dentro. Anche il cavallo viene serenamente accompagnato fuori dalle scatole.

Scopriamo poi che si chiama Callus ed è pazzo, oltre che assai permaloso.

Gli piace rotolarsi nel fango:

Left Callus in his garden, we go to work; ideal climatic conditions support us in all the activities in the yard: a slight drizzle that bathes even the brain alternates with a scorching equatorial sun. Curiously, the sky always remains white, regardless of the weather: I'm beginning to believe they just forgot to mount it in place.

Lasciato Callus nel suo giardino, si va a lavorare; condizioni climatiche ideali ci supportano nelle attività del cantiere: una leggera pioggerella che ti bagna anche il cervello si alterna a un cocente sole equatoriale. Curiosamente, il cielo rimane sempre e comunque bianco, indipendentemente dal tempo: comincio a credere che si siano proprio dimenticati di montarlo:

Coming home dirty, tired and satisfied, I find the lawn overrun by Elves; friends of Callus, apparently. Local children are used to play in the Granja; sometimes Callus tries to eat one, without success.

Tornato a casa sporco, stanco e soddisfatto, mi trovo il prato invaso dagli Elfi; amici di Callus, a quanto pare. I bimbi locali sono abituati a giocare nella Granja; a volte Callus prova a mangiarne uno, senza successo.

You can find them also in the woods, doing mysterious things.

Li trovi anche nel bosco, mentre fanno cose misteriose.

Finally comes another evening; what doesn’t come anymore is electricity; never mind, we are rich in candles and joy. But even of pepper pasta, that joy is good, though can’t be eated.

Giunge infine un’altra sera; quello che non giunge più è la corrente elettrica; poco male, siamo ricchi di candele e di gioia. Ma anche di pasta al peperoncino, che la gioia sta bene, però non la si mangia.

Ecuador is divided in three zones, each one with a complete different climate: The Cost, to the west along the Pacific, the Amazon to the east and the Sierra in the centre, a plateau made by volcanoes that easily reach 6000 m. After a couple of hours the road finally start to climb, we head towards inside the clouds.

L'Ecuador è diviso in tre zone, dal clima completamente diverso: la Costa, a ovest lungo il Pacifico, l'Amazonia a est e la Sierra al centro, un altipiano formato da vulcani che superano agevolmente i 6000 m. Dopo un paio d'ore la strada finalmente sale, puntiamo diretti dentro le nuvole.

All the humidity coming from the Coast bumps into these mountains and creates the grey fog rumbling around us. The car goes on slowly, sometimes ghosts appear around us: this is a dark place, we all fell silent. I lower the window to collect a couple of images and the fog curls inside my throat: it’s frosty and humid; I end up with face and camera dotted by minuscule droplets. I feel cold, and I can feel with the whole body how nature here, every day, conquers again – with no effort – the space that men claimed with extreme pain.

Tutta l'umidità della Costa si scontra con queste montagne e crea la nebbia grigia che ci rotola attorno. L’auto avanza lentamente, ogni tanto compaiono fantasmi attorno a noi: è un luogo oscuro questo, siamo tutti silenziosi. Abbasso il finestrino per raccogliere qualche immagine e la nebbia mi si attorciglia in gola: è gelida e umida; mi ritrovo la faccia e la macchina fotografica punteggiate di minuscole goccioline. Ho freddo, e riesco a sentire con tutto il corpo come la natura qui, ogni giorno, riconquista senza sforzo lo spazio che gli uomini si sono ritagliati con estrema fatica.

Where the road stops climbing, villages and people dig their own existence out of the fog. Here you can find everything, if you know how to look or to ask: we buy mangos from a shy granny, her toothless smile reminds me a Cheshire Cat. Mangos however are good, very good.

Dove la strada smette per un momento di salire, villaggi e persone scavano la propria esistenza fuori dalla nebbia. Qui c’è tutto, se sai guardare o se sai chiedere: compriamo dei manghi da una schiva signora, il cui sorriso sdentato mi ricorda molto uno Stregatto. I manghi però sono buoni, tanto buoni.

We climb again, looking for a little air for our mood, oppressed by the fog; we are completely alone, around us walls of white and walls of green: a dark, strong, incumbent green that protrudes on the road like a bridgehead, sent to conquer again the irrelevant space stolen to the forest. Finally a companion, a small jeep: at least we are not alone in this vertical ocean.

Ci arrampichiamo ancora, cercando un po’ di aria per il nostro umore oppresso dalla nebbia; siamo completamente soli, attorno a noi solo pareti bianche e pareti verdi: un verde scuro, carico, incombente, si protende sulla strada come una testa di ponte, inviata a riconquistare quello spazio minuscolo rubato alla foresta. Finalmente un compare di viaggio, un piccolo fuoristrada: almeno non siamo soli in questo oceano verticale.

A by-the-book tale dictates now that suddenly the road stops climbing and suddenly the sky becomes blue. Instead, we have to conquer our sky, inch by inch: the fog resists, letting go only centimetres, slowly, tearing apart the blue with its claws; against them, the wind comes in aid. It’s a frosty wind, but clean, that smells of meadows.

Un racconto da manuale vorrebbe che ora la strada d’improvviso tornasse pianeggiante e d’improvviso il cielo tornasse azzurro. Invece noi il nostro azzurro ce lo dobbiamo conquistare, palmo a palmo: la nebbia resiste, molla un centimetro di cielo per volta, lentamente, lacerando l’azzurro con i suoi artigli; contro di loro giunge in nostro soccorso il vento. È un vento ghiacciato, ma pulito, che profuma di prati.

After an hour battling with fog, the wind is the winner, the altitude also helping: we are now close to San Pablo, altitude 2458 m, and magically we are transported in the Dolomites. More vertical, more green and more strange Dolomites; however the landscape has the same scent.

Dopo un’ora di battaglia, il vento vince, aiutato dalla quota: siamo ormai vicini a San Pablo, quota 2458 m, e magicamente veniamo trasportati nelle Dolomiti. Delle Dolomiti più verticali, più verdi e più strane; ma il paesaggio ha lo stesso odore.

A yellow arrow sends us with joy towards the city: it’s nine o’clock in the morning and we are hungry, a stop in San Pablo is inevitable, but I couldn’t imagine to sip there the best coffee of my life. Usually I don’t drink coffee, Italian Espresso plays a little too much with my head, but this one is so hot, sweet and the señora preparing it is full of beauty and smiles. In front of her small omelettes, made of corn and cheese, I definitively surrender to the joy of existence.

Una freccia gialla ci indirizza con allegria verso la cittadina: sono le 9 del mattino e siamo affamati, una sosta a San Pablo è inevitabile, ma mai avrei immaginato di gustare il caffè più buono della mia vita. Non che ne abbia bevuti molti, di solito l’espresso italiano si diverte un po’ troppo a giocare con la mia testa, ma questo è caldissimo, dolce e la señora che ce lo prepara è bella e sorridente. Di fronte alle sue frittatine di mais e formaggio mi arrendo definitivamente alla gioia di esistere.

San Pablo is full of little signs of the ancient Ecuador: men riding horses, delightful grannies in old clothes and pastel colours against the perfect blue and white of the sky. The towns, the people in the mountains always seem like home, they’re made with an essence that reminds me where I really belong: San Pablo is no exception.

San Pablo regala piccoli scorci di Ecuador antico: uomini a cavallo, vecchine deliziose in abiti antichi e colori pastello che spiccano sull’azzurro e il bianco perfetto del cielo. I paesi, la gente in montagna hanno sempre la faccia di casa, hanno sempre quel modo di essere che mi ricorda da dove vengo veramente: San Pablo non fa eccezione.

We start again climbing the Sierra, along with the perfect line of asphalt that President Correa has built to propel the country in the future; Ecuador is looking ahead: with half the population under 25 years old, ready to create a better nation, it couldn’t be any different. We are now on the plateau at Chimborazo base, an inactive volcano reaching over 6000 m of height. After a turn and a couple of small valleys devoured by the street, the mountain becomes visible in the distance, forerun by a cohort of smaller peaks and dozens of communities that I’ll never discover.

Torniamo a scalare la Sierra, accompagnati dalla perfetta striscia di asfalto che il Presidente Correa ha fatto costruire per proiettare il paese nel futuro; l’Ecuador guarda avanti, con metà della propria popolazione sotto i 25 anni, pronta a creare un paese migliore, non potrebbe essere altrimenti. Ormai siamo sull’altipiano alla base del Chimborazo, un vulcano inattivo che totalizza oltre 6000 m di altezza. E infatti dopo qualche curva e un paio di vallette divorate dalla strada, il monte si intravede in lontananza, preceduto da un codazzo di cime minori e decine di comunità montane che probabilmente non visiterò mai.

The ramping asphalt of Routa 491 turns around the Chimborazo plateau, through San Miguel, San José de Chimbo, to arrive in the end to Guaranda: the colours are the same found in San Pablo, this cities seem to float lightly, gathered in the small valleys between the peaks.

L’asfalto rampante della Routa 491 aggira l’altipiano del Chimborazo, attraversando San Miguel, San José de Chimbo, per arrivare infine a Guaranda: i colori restano gli stessi di San Pablo, queste cittadine sembrano galleggiare leggere, raccolte nelle vallette tra una cima e l’altra.

Immediately after Guanujo, the road bends a little towards East and goes up: suddenly I’m in front of an almost unreal brush stroke of blue, thrown there after an unimportant bend; I smile to the wind and take a no-brain picture. This land flows inside you with no inconvenience, leaving you shortly with a little marvel and a pinch of melancholy; maybe that little tear is only joy, brought by the wind.

Subito dopo Guanujo, pieghiamo leggermente verso est e verso l’alto: di colpo mi trovo davanti una pennellata di azzurro quasi irreale, buttata lì dietro una curva qualsiasi; sorrido al vento e scatto senza nemmeno dover pensare. Questo paese ti scorre dentro senza disturbare, lasciandoti di colpo con un po’ di meraviglia e un pizzico di malinconia; o forse quella lacrima è solo gioia, portata nel vento.

Chimborazo is now closer, and we go back climbing with violence, the car finds it hard: we can’t go above 40 km/h, due to the impervious road. Trees are more and more sparse, more and more low, less and less they define the landscape.

Il Chimborazo è sempre più vicino e si torna a salire con violenza, l’auto stenta in salita: non riusciamo a superare i 40 km/h, tanto è impervia la via. Gli alberi sono sempre più radi, sempre più bassi, sempre meno determinano il paesaggio.

We run now under the slopes of the volcano, in a lunar landscape; the traffic becomes sparse, the streets require to be travelled by bike: incredible bends alternate  with straights cut in the plateau, demanding to give it all there is in the bike.

Corriamo alle pendici del vulcano, in un paesaggio lunare; il traffico è sempre più diradato, ma le strade meritano di essere percorse in moto: curvoni incredibili si alternano a rettilinei tagliati nell'altipiano che impongono di spalancare tutto il gas che la moto ti può dare.

We are over 4000 m, now there are only rocks and bushes, the sky is full of clouds: it seems the twilight of a diverse world, where there are only wind, cold and dark colours, browns and greens that perfectly fit with the black of the rocks. And suddenly my heart stops, the only thought is to stop the car. Immediately. My hands shake while I get out of the car, I prepare the camera and take the shot:

Siamo oltre i 4000 m, ormai non ci sono altro che roccia e cespugli, il cielo si è riempito di nubi: sembra il crepuscolo di un mondo diverso, dove esistono solo vento, freddo e colori scuri, marroni e verdi in tinta perfetta con il nero della roccia. E di colpo mi si ferma il cuore, l’unico pensiero è quello di fermare l’auto. Immediatamente. Mi tremano le mani mentre scendo, preparo la macchina fotografica e scatto:

I sit on the ground for a moment, placing the camera between the legs, shedding tears and smiling to the Chimborazo; that smile and that tears are my prayer to the universe, my thanks for a wonderful life.

Mi siedo un momento a terra, poggio la macchina tra le gambe e con le lacrime agli occhi, sorrido al Chimborazo; quel sorriso e quelle lacrime sono la mia preghiera all'universo, il mio ringraziamento per una vita straordinaria.

The travel goes on, taking me away from the absolute, but I have no more interest even in looking out of the window. The people take me back into the world, peculiar faces in strange clothes; and you simply can’t ignore the children.

Il viaggio continua, strappandomi via all'assoluto, ma non ho più nemmeno voglia di guardare fuori dal finestrino. Sono le persone a riportarmi di nuovo nel mondo, volti particolari in abiti strani; i bimbi poi non li puoi ignorare.

I have no idea of the itinerary, probably in Ambato we headed to the North, along the Routa 35. I become aware of Quito, the great capitol city, only when we are already coasting it, from above; a round of greetings in the district where we’ll stay for the night, happy chatting which I don’t take part, a dusk painted by the clouds. Quito can take only this small room, the rest of my spirit is still overflowing.

Non ho idea di dove siamo passati, probabilmente ad Ambato abbiamo piegato a nord, lungo la Routa 35. Mi accorgo di Quito, la grande capitale, solo quando ormai stiamo costeggiando la città, dall’alto; un giro di saluti nel quartiere che ci ospiterà, chiacchiere allegre cui non partecipo, un tramonto disegnato dalle nubi. Quito riesce a ritagliarsi solo questo piccolo spazio, il resto del mio spirito sta ancora traboccando.
