            there was a time where ezra was shamelessly optimistic as he was reckless. symptoms of being young and naive to the game. eager to please and succeed, yet in turn, the feeling of needing to keep things somewhat professional left the young man walking a very fine line. the last thing ezra ever expected was someone to find their way under the facade he tried so hard to perfect, of all things for him to feel so hopeful for them back. it was surprising, for ezra. for someone who wasn’t big on surprises, ash was sure full of them. 

eyes softened as they always did for them. fingers intertwined gracelessly in front of him, the energy burning at the tips. ezra had hoped for the day he find ash again, his late twenties were spent trying to find them ─── with very little luck. now here they were, older and astute ( debatable on ezra’s part, never growing up to be the man he truly wanted ) with the wisecrack at a loss for words. only their name silently resting on ezra’s tongue, “  i’m not sure whether to be surprised to see you or not.  ” the confidence, the arrogant wit, it was all missing in fear of scaring ash away. what would people normally say in this situation ? what was he suppose to say ? taking another breath, ezra exhaled.
