I think it is very hard to just spontaneously generate something. Often the difficulty is finding a topic, not in actually doing the writing. But if you just try something on a page, then you can recreate it in a reacting instant.

The Managing Director Application is Now Closed!
But we're looking forward to reading through the many applications we received and introducing our newest staff member at our open mic and slam next week. Don't forget to sign up!
Confused About the "No Repeat" Rule?
It's simple!Â
Say you perform Poem A in the first round of your first slam of the season, and Poem B in the second round, but you do not win the qualifier. The next time you slam (your second slam of the season) you may not use Poem A or Poem B in the first round. This does not necessarily mean that Poem C needs to have been written that month so long as the audience has not heard it in any slam in the current season. In the second round, however, you may use Poem A, Poem B, or any poem that you like (so long as it's within the rules, of course)! This pattern continues throughout the season so that in your third slam you may not use Poem A, B, or C in the first round, and so on until Grand Slam.
If you have any further questions you can email [email protected]. Don't forget to sign up for our September 14th open mic or slam!
I had a horror of much of the distinctly unpleasant âpoliticalâ writing that I read in classrooms. These poems were taught from the perspective that writing that displayed a self-consciousness of language as an ideological apparatus, or that argued for certain kinds of cultural representation, was inherently worth reading. I am sympathetic to that stance. However, I often did not enjoy reading that work. Perhaps the claim for such writing was never beauty anyway. It was important even if it was not beautiful. But it is a challenge for a work of art to be effectively important if it is not pleasing, for the pleasing-but-unimportant is simply, well, more pleasing. I was about to write that Iâd rather read the important stuff, even if it was unpleasant, but thatâs exactly it: Iâm human; I wouldnât.
