Chapter 6
The house wasn't too shabby inside, though some of the paint on the walls was peeling, showing the stone foundation. Legend spun around on one foot, facing Royal with a stupid grin on her face.
"This is the main hall, we're working on getting a rug for it, last one was moldy, but until then be careful you don't get splinters walking on the floorboards, 'kay? Onto the living room!" Legend gently tugged Royal towards the doorway in front of them, where she could vaguely see Fae dusting a bookshelf. As they passed through the threshold, he looked up and awkwardly waved. The room was... nice, surprisingly roomy too. There were a couple old couches and bookshelves, and a clear view of the next room.
"As you can tell, this is the living room, this was probably the dustiest room in the house when we first checked it out, right Fae?"
"Ha uh, yeah, it was really dusty for sure. Still kinda is to be honest, hence the uh, extra dusting I'm doing." Fae rubbed the back of his head with a hand, the other clutching the duster tightly. Legend made a slight face before taking the duster from him.
"Listen, you don't have to constantly do stuff, you need to relax too yknow." When Fae simply blinked, she continued, "I understand Why you feel like you gotta earn a keep or something, you Don't. We're not gonna just kick you out or abandon you for any reason. Now go sit down, or lay down, or whatever, and Relax."
The boy made a noise of protest, before eventually settling down on one of the couches awkwardly. He and Royal watched as Legend headed towards one of the bookshelves, placing the duster on the very top of it.
"Ok, now that that's handled, let's move on with the tour. This next room is a two in one, with the dining room and kitchen." Legend swiftly spun on her heel and headed into said next room, ushering Royal to follow. Awkwardly waving, Royal turned away from Fae and went into the next room.
The kitchen and dining room combo was surprisingly roomy, split about half and half for each purpose. The dining room half had a nice table in the center, with eight chairs surrounding it, though the last chair was in much worse condition than the others, with its leg propped up with a chunk of firewood to keep it from leaning. The kitchen fared much better, cabinets lining each wall, with a stove in the center of the front wall, a pair of windows on either side of it letting in light.
"Fancy right? I'll be able to hone my cooking skills in here, maybe actually make something edible for once." Legend laughed a little, "And it has a cellar out the side there! Perfect for storing meat." She gestured to a door opposite the side they had entered from. Royal could only nod in acknowledgement, eyes being drawn back to the various cabinets and then to a smaller firepit in the corner.
"Whats that one for?" She gestured to it, causing Legend to look away from the outer door.
"I think that's for a big pot or something. Soups and stews and the like. Maybe even potions. I mean, nobody really had much to say on the family that lived here before, just that they moved in a hurry a while ago, which explains all the furniture still being here. So who knows, maybe they were witches!" Legend cracked another smile, earning a light smack on the shoulder, "Hey, Easy, don't wanna hurt your shoulder more by hurting mine."
"Just continue the tour you dork." Royal barely held back a snort, following Legend as she headed back out through the living room, where Fae had already fallen asleep on the couch, head drooping down to his chest as he slumbered lightly.
"Poor kid... he must've been exhausted." Legend mumbled, watching him for a moment, before quickly and quietly walking past into the hall, Royal following suit. "Alright, next is upstairs, you need help up them or you got it?"
"Its my shoulder that's injured, not my legs Legend. I'll be fine." Royal started up the old stairs, fighting back a wince when they creaked underfoot. It was an old house, what had she expected? She was already lucky the floorboards in general hadn't creaked under her. Legend followed close behind her up the stairs, where at the top, there was a sharp turn to the landing. There was a small walk to the hall, where they were met with two doors on the right and right ahead.
"Ok so, the one on the right is where Fae, Rise, and Fall are gonna be sleeping, and the one ahead of us is-" Legend hurried in front of Royal, opening the door. "Where the rest of us are sleeping!" The room in front of them opened immediately onto a moderately sized bed, and looking to the right, Royal could see a much larger bed against the other wall with a nightstand on either side.
"I figured you could have the smaller bed all to yourself and Past, Celestial, and I can share the big one." Legend turned back to Royal, smiling. "That sound good to you?"
"Yes, that should be enough space for all of us in each bed. And even if it was a bit cramped, it certainly beats sleeping on the ground." Royal walked into the room, testing the bed's softness. Surprisingly soft, especially for an abandoned house's bed. The family that lived here previously must've been well off to afford something so nice. Legend must've noticed her surprise, because she walked over and flopped on the bed.
"Nice, aren't they? Almost as nice as my bed at home too!" Legends gangly legs dangled over the side of the bed as she laid there, before she suddenly sat up. "Say, you're probably hungry aren't you? Last thing you ate was dried meat before the attack. Unless you ate something on guard duty but that was still over a day ago. Let's go get something cooked up, it's about lunchtime anyways." Hopping up from the bed, Legend started towards the door, only stopping to wait for Royal to follow.
Royal opened her mouth to refute the fact that she was hungry, when her stomach let out a long and low growl. Snapping her mouth shut quickly, she hurried past Legend, feeling her face flush with embarrassment. As the duo walked down the stairs, they heard a short sob from the living room. Quickening their pace, they found themselves pushing past Celestial and Fall to see Rise awkwardly patting Fae's shoulder as he sobbed into his hands. She looked up at the duo and grimaced.
"I don't know what I did wrong, I just asked him if he had anyone in his timeline he was friends with!" She said, voice tinged with guilt. Fae let out another strangled sounding sob. Legend hurried over, kneeling in front of him.
"Hey, hey, look at me. What's wrong? You can tell us." She spoke softly, gently taking his hands when he lowered them. She reached up and gently wiped the tears away from his eyes.
"I just... oh goddesses I'm just so afraid. What if I get home and everyone I know is dead? Especially my best friends... they'd both... oh they'd both put themselves in harms way to protect other people..." Fae sniffled softly, slowly calming down. Legend sighed softly, putting on a smile.
"I'm sure they're fine, you'd be surprised how tough the average hylian is when it comes down to it. But why don't you tell us about them, maybe that'll help? I know talking through my own worries helps me." Fae took a deep breath, nodding as he took his hands back and wiped his face clear of tears.
"I-I really only have two best friends... or well, friends in general, but I'm so close to both of them. There's Malin, she works at the ranch near my house, she's so strong she can stop a cow running at her without much effort but she's got no combat training. I'm worried she'll take up a sword while I'm gone and try to do what I was failing to do, and get... get really hurt like I was. She doesn't know how to sew at all, or bandage wounds, or anything like that so she could get hurt much worse than I did... and then there's Cul, he's um... he's in the royal guard like my... like my dad was, he's my age though, and he's the one I'm most worried about because well..." Fae let out a strained laugh, "He's not very good at the fighting part of being in the guard, he just looks scary at that scares people off. But it's entirely like him to throw himself into danger to protect people..." Fae sniffled again, wiping his eyes once more.
"They sound like good people, you should have more faith in them. Besides, we don't know how long we'll be gone in our own respective timelines, it could only be a few moments that you're gone." Legend put her hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah! And um... even if it's longer, I bet they're fighting real hard and doing good!" Celestial piped in, hurrying over. "So you don't gotta worry so much!" She nodded firmly, puffing out her cheeks. Fae let out another strangled laugh, smiling at the young girl.
"Thank you... really, I'm probably worried over nothing. I'm sorry about all that."
"You don't need to apologize, it's a completely valid worry you have, and honestly? I'm glad you have people back home you can worry about, especially with... well." Royal stopped herself before she could say what they were all thinking. They were all worried Fae had been completely alone after the death of his father. The boy sighed slightly, looking down at his hands in his lap.
"I'm glad too. I don't think... I don't think I could've made it as far as I did without them." He looked up, eyes full of determination, and a hint of sorrow. "So I gotta get back to them, to make sure their efforts weren't in vain."
Royal nodded, looking around at the group. "I think we all have someone like that to come home to. So let's all try to avoid another incident when we leave." The rest of them nodded in agreement, each thinking of their own people at home. Royal's thoughts drifted to her own Link, that stubborn idiot who insisted on bringing dragons back to Hyrule. She bit back a sigh as her heart ached. She hated to admit it, but she missed him. Quietly, she wondered to herself if the others missed their own Links as much. Surely Legend did at least, with how much she talked about him, same with Celestial. Past was always a bit more shut off about it, but Rise hadn't Once mentioned her Link, just that she had one. And Fall... well, Royal wasn't too sure what she'd have in place of a Link, but she didn't talk much about him, and just referred to him as the Hero.
"Right! We came down to make lunch, anyone else hungry?" Legend slapped her knees as she stood up, looking around. "Aw who am I kidding, we're all starving aren't we?"
There was a small chorus of agreement, and as Legend started to the kitchen, Royal slid in front of her.
"Maybe we ought to have someone who can... actually cook, make lunch. You said you wanted to learn, so you can learn by watching." She really, Really would prefer something actually edible for lunch, recalling the last time Legend had tried cooking something for their dinner, back in Katsuto Town. It had been... Interesting, to say the least. Legend paused, clearly surprised, before laughing loudly.
"Yeah you're probably right. Anyone up to teaching me how to cook a decent lunch?"
"I can." Fae said, standing up as well. "I'm used to making meals on my own, so having a second set of hands would be nice." He started towards the kitchen, soon followed by Legend.
The next half an hour or so was very hectic, with Fae constantly swapping between asking for help from Legend, and yelling about needing his space in the kitchen. Legend though, was surprisingly calm throughout all of it, just doing as she was asked, and paying attention to the whole process. Eventually, and thankfully without any thrown knives, the duo served the rest of the group at the table a nice lunch of soup.
"Here we are, eat up!" Fae smiled as he set a bowl in front of Royal and Celestial each. The smell was mouth-watering, but Royal was patient enough to wait until the others were served as well to start eating. The same could barely be said for Celestial, who started chowing down the moment the last bowl hit the table. Royal stifled a chuckle, as well as a small reprimand about manners. They weren't in the castle, they could afford to let Celestial be a child for once.
"This is delicious, what did you put in it?" Royal looked up as Fall asked the question. Fae smiled, rubbing the back of his head with a hand.
"Oh, just some vegetables and dried meat, it's something like what my father used to make when I was little. Just a quick and easy meal." He looked down at his soup and stirred it thoughtfully, before taking a spoonful. "I'm glad you like it though! He'd be honored his favorite meal is good to you too."
The group chattered as they ate, not really talking about anything important, or plans for when they got home. Past planned on writing down everything that happened, she had apparently bought a journal just before they all found themselves here that she had planned on using for dreams originally, but felt this would be more important. Celestial said she wanted to find her friends and tell them all about the journey, and also ask her father for magic lessons. Royal, personally, was going to get some therapy, though she didn't say that out loud. Rise hadn't said much about her plans and Fall... all she had said was she needed to apologize to someone.
Soon they finished, Fae taking their bowls to the counter to wash later. Celestial let out a large yawn, causing a chain reaction among the group aside from Royal, who simply chuckled.
"It looks like you all could use some rest. Why don't you get some sleep and I'll finish cleaning up." The rest of them nodded, slowly getting up from the table and filtering out through the living room. Fae was the last to leave, only doing so after confirming with Royal that she would be fine cleaning up.
Soon Royal was alone with the bowls and spoons, taking the few remaining on the table to the counter with the others. From there, she started dunking the bowls in the basin of water Fae had used to wash the vegetables, wiping them clean with a spare rag. She hummed as she worked, taking care to not strain her shoulder as she set the bowls out to dry, taking a moment to admire the handywork that must've gone into them. Two were cheaper clay made, but still had little carvings in their sides, while the rest were elegant and polished wood with careful engravings on the bottoms.
She found herself staring at the bottom of one of the bowls as she wondered who in Hyrule used to live here. They had to have been well off, the house seemed to be better off than most of the other houses in town, but everyone said they left in a hurry one night, with no explanation. These thoughts continued to swirl in Royal's mind as she walked over to the couch and sat, pondering.
The girls weapons! (Fae's will come at a later time when I actually have his ref) not all size accurate, some had to be a bit larger for detail, but Celestial's staff Is as big as she is.
