As the hours went past, Sayuri grew as stubborn as ever, refusing to move from the workout room she planted herself in. If this place didnāt have some sort of conceivable exit route, than it all really was hopeless⦠until outside sources intervened that is. Sayuri normally wouldnāt be shocked that the law was so lax, but in a heavily populated area like where the school was⦠something was wrong and it made the girl uneasy.
The sound of the door creaking open did a good job of snapping her out of that worrisome trance she put herself in, and as instinct would have it, Sayuri ducked behind a workout bench she was already looking under for a little-girl sized vent. Whoever this idiot was, the person probably just wanted to come and use the room for its intended use maybe even grab a weight to commit the first crime. As luck would have it though, the idiot was Umiko, somebody Sayuri could stand to talk to a second time. She gingerly placed the pot onto the equipment, to not startle both Togemura and the other girl. Once she stood up, Sayuri called out to her in her more gentle voice.
"Umiko. Iām sorry but if youāre exploring, I already have this room covered. Unless you came to use these machines butā¦" Sayuri made a conscious decision to not call her out on her obvious illness. It would be rude to make light of it despite that though, so she bit her tongue and changed the subject, and her voice back to normal while she was at it. "So⦠how is your team? I hate to use that name since there isnāt much cooperating at all. You would think that would mean less talking, yet the worst people have come to talk to us." She could have said Umiko was an exception, but she had been a bit of a bother as well. Sayuri wouldnāt just lie to set her mind at ease, especially when there was no guarantee that she would count herself in the vague insult. Let her think what she thinks, but the gardener would simply continue to hope there were no instances like when the two first met again, so there would be a chance to become⦠acquaintances⦠maybe.
It wasn't until the voice's owner spoke up that Umiko even realized someone else was in the room with her. She'd painstakingly bent down to examine the mat, and when the voice rang out, she nearly toppled over, managing just barely to keep herself (mostly) vertical with her cane. The voice was vaguely familiar but she couldn't put a face to it, and as she frantically craned her neck around to see... Sayuri.Ā
She calmed down immediately, but there was still a note of anxiety in the air. She'd been incredibly lucky that the person she'd noticed was the gardener and not, say, that horrible boy from before. Because, if it had been... She tried to push that thought out of her mind as she slowly rose to greet Sayuri, making a mental note to be more observant.Ā "Oh, hello Kawakamii-san. I... well, yes, but..." She stopped for a moment, wondering if there was a way to dance around the question, but dancing, physically or mentally, was not her forte.Ā "I was actually looking to see if there were things I could use for, er, physical therapy."Ā Though she wasn't particularly fond of talking about her disability with others, she [hoped] thought she could trust Sayuri.
"My team?" Umiko hadn't really given them much thought; her focus had been getting to know the individual people, though perhaps now she should switch attention to her team...Ā "I don't think I'm on the same team as that insufferable boy, at least. They seem alright, though except for the boy with those guns..." She shuddered unhappily.Ā "But Kawakamii-san, did you happen to find anything for your plants?"Ā Though normally a conversation about cryptids (or even legendary plants) would've been more ideal, she was just happy to get off of the idea of the teams, for now.Ā "I'm sorry I couldn't be much help, but if there's something you need, let me know and I'll keep a look-out for it."

Subaru had taken little time getting moving from the gym but something was on her mind. Umiko was so slow. And that had nothing to do with the cane, either. In fact, it wasnāt even really her physical pace that was bothering her - it was her mental speed. Umiko seemed like a pretty smart girl. She was smart enough to be a cryptozoo-whatever it was, after all. But then why was it that she spent so much time worrying over every little thing that entered her head? Subaru frowned at the thought. She really was gonna grey her hair early like that. "You knowā" she began in an almost sing-song tone of voice. "If you keep worrying like this someone might think youāre planning something so theyāll try to beat you to it and next thing you knowā" her voice suddenly sounded like a bang, "Thud! Slash! Kapooooooooow!" her arms went out wide. "Youāre history!" Subaru briefly paused in leading the way as she turned to face Umiko before shrugging and laughing. "Hahaha, Iām just kidding of course but seriously, Onodera-nee, seriously! Relax a little. Letās just see how it plays out." she waved a hand. Then it was time to get moving again.
"No oneās gonna come after me, anyway." Subaru prattled on, her eyes wandering as she tried to connect the corridors to the ones from the map sheād tried to memorize. For whatever reason she didnāt want to look at the map. It was kinda like⦠it ruined the challenge of it. Hey, it wasnāt much but you had to try and find something fun to do when you had the chance right? Otherwise youād just get all weird and paranoid or something like the others were. Or just plain old bored. Neither was a particularly exciting prospect. "Theyād know better than to target me! My courage will always keep my alive, you know?" she said it in such a matter-of-fact way that she made it hard for people to disagree despite it being such a ridiculous thing to say⦠let alone think in the first place.
Although it had seemed like sheād ignored it earlier, Subaru was still partially thinking about what Umiko had said about disliking water⦠or rather, not doing well with it. That⦠was really unfortunate. She wasnāt much of a swimmer, sure, but, it was pretty fun to like, just relax in a bath or at a beach or something. To think Umiko couldnāt do that⦠or was too uncomfortable to do that⦠somehow that gave Subaru a little chill. Negative things like that often did so she tried to push it to the back of her mind before tilting her head back and giving her yet another small smile. "Doing alright?"
It was hard. She wasnāt a fast walker by any means but pretty much anyone would walk faster than a girl with a cane and Subaru did have a tendency of going overboard and getting overly excited in finding new places - there was a good chance sheād unintentionally speed ahead if she wasnāt careful so the least she could do was ask every now and again to make sure Umiko was holding up okay. Huh! If only thereād been a SHSL Doctor or Surgeon to help her out with it. "Anyway, donāt worry about the water thing," she finally tackled the subject, her tone breezy as she began gliding ahead again. "Itās probably just nerves, yāknow. Some people get all terrified of heights but after that first sky dive theyāre hooked like a fish! Youāll like it, I know it!" Subaru nodded to herself, utterly confident in this. "Ah, this is itā I think. Hold on, whatās your map say?" she asked Umiko, still determined to keep this odd little challenge of hers going on.
As Subaru immediately leapt into action, exiting the room fairly quickly, Umi's approach was much slower, inhibited not only by her own walking speed and her cane, but also by the fact that she straight-up did not want to follow the other girl. Though she supposed that Subaru had a point in trying to stay upbeat, refusing to even consider the fact that someone might take the tvs seriously was a foolish mistake, she felt. After getting past the door (again), she'd only taken a few steps into the long hallway when Subaru spoke, and she looked up even as she tried to increase her pace a little. The words she recognized as a continuation of something she didn't particularly want to talk about and thus only gave them minimal attention... until suddenly the words were merely onomatopoeia, andĀ loud ones at that. The taller girl froze, hand gripping her cane tightly. The other one had wandered down past the handle, as if intending on wielding the cane, but then she merely shrugged it off, adding in a light-hearted laugh. Umiko wasn't laughing.Ā "I... suppose you're right."Ā She 'supposed' no such thing, but figured that it was better than arguing with the mangaka at this point.
Umi started up again, working back up to the pace she'd been at, and it wasn't long at all before Subaru spoke up again.Ā "Oh?"Ā While the thought that someone would come after herself had definitely popped into her mind, thinking about someone going after Subaru hadn't... but then it did, reminding her of her status as the other girl's protector.Ā "I wouldn't be sure of that, Oshima-san. I think if someone were to kill, they would see us both as... prime targets, given I'm, ah, guarding you at the moment."Ā All one would have to do to get at the mangaka was topple Umi over and take her cane. Hell, the cane could even be used as the murder weapon.Ā "I hope you know what you're talking about," she sighed, trudging on through the long hallway.
As they made their way down the hallway at a fraction of the face Subaru probably would've normally been going at, Umi frowned at the growing soreness in her legs, and general fatigue. She'd done a good bit of walking today, more than she'd normally do, and she was feeling it, badly. As much as she hated to admit it, maybe soaking in a tub wouldn't be so bad... as long as the water wasn't too deep. At the very least, maybe she could stick her legs in and - Subaru's voice drew her away from these thoughts.Ā "I'm fine,"Ā she replied curtly, struggling to speed up even a little.
They'd passed the kitchen and the library already, and had just went through the door into the common room when Subaru spoke again, and Umiko furrowed her eyebrows at what she said.Ā "I'm sorry?" she questioned, before frowning deeply as the other continued.Ā "I almostĀ drowned,"Ā she said through gritted teeth, as if expecting the other to have known this already, but when asked, she wobbled slightly as she leaned heavily on her cane to extract the ID from her pocket and navigate to the map.Ā "This appears to be it," she confirmed, waiting for Subaru to start moving again as she dropped the ID back into the sweater pocket.

Of all the places on the map (including the empty classrooms and the mysterious locked door), the workout room was probably the one where no one would've expected to find Umiko. And, if not for one fairly specific thing, she wouldn't have been there. Wrapping herself a little more tightly in her sweater, she made her way to the gym from where she and Subaru had parted ways (for the time being, her mind wearily reminded her), and from there into the almost lobby area of the work-out room. She stopped a moment, seeing the twin changing rooms, and then heading into the one that she was supposed to.
For now, she bypassed the changing room. Seeing as she didn't actually intend on doing any physical activity yet, there was no need for her to examine the lockers for any sort of clothing or gear she might at one point need to use. She'd worry about that after she figured out if there was anything here she could actually use. Every Tuesday and Thursday, almost since she could remember, she'd attended physical therapy. There was a very good chance, even when she was younger, that her ataxia would progress as she aged, and her parents had hoped the therapy would help. Considering that she was still walking under her own steam, even with a cane, she'd take that as a success.
Using her shoulder to push the door open, she warily stepped inside, wrinkling her nose as the scent of sweat. It was to be expected, seeing as it was indeed a workout room, but that didn't make the stench any more palpable. There was a frown on her face as she went further into the room, trying to examine things. Weights, at least those large ones, were out of the question. She spotted a few mats, and nodded, heading toward them. If they were thick enough, then she could definitely do exercises on there...Ā
Believe in the You That Protects Me
She had just been about to storm out of this lousy gymnasium and find the cryptozoologist herself when, like magic, just as thought to do so she saw the girlās head pop into the room. Hm. Perhaps her voice had been louder than sheād thought. Or no, no, perhaps it had just been destiny - right as Subaru had wanted to see her, she appeared! Yeah, that had a better ring to it, she found. Subaru skipped over to the black-haired girl as she entered and then blinked at her question. "TV head-tachi? Nooope, they werenāt here - never were. I wouldnāt be here if they were!" she paused here to laugh. "They really kill my creative buzz, yāknow?" she then, for whatever reason, felt perhaps Umiko wasnāt listening and frowned. More than not listening she had that expression of fear on her face again - of anxiety and nervousness. "Onodera-saaan, were you spacing out? Geez! Thereās that "Iāve seen a ghost" face again!" the smaller blonde laughed such a carefree laugh it was hard to imagine her even being in such a strange and grim situation. She gave the girl an almost wry smile as if to say she somewhat understood before it faded and she began tugging on her sleeve, pink eyes lighting up. Something had clearly sparked in her head. "What are you so worried about? Shouldnāt we have just like, a little tiiiny bit of confidence in our class mates?" Subaru gave a light shrug. She actually hadnāt bothered thinking about most of them herself but they werenāt exactly just gonna start killing each other over nothing were they? Or because little TV heads told them to, right? That would just be ridiculous. If they were so easily manipulated then they kinda deserved whatever came their way. Harsh, maybe, but thatās how it worked in shounen. There should be no place for evil in this world, after all.
"Oh, I know!" she began. After tugging on the tallerās sleeve, Subaru retracted her hand and stuck her arms behind her back again. A cheeky smile began to appear on her face."Letās go take a relaxing bath, Onodera-san! Ah, ah, actually to christen our time togetherā¦" Subaru began to tap her cheeks rhythmically, her eyes wandering in thought before they lit up once more, like little pink fireworks, and her head whirled back to Umiko. "How about Onodera-nee? Haha, do you like it? Itās ācause youāre so realiable!" Perhaps it would seem insensitive, the word reliable given Umikoās disability but really, the mangaka gave it little thought. She had always felt honesty was the best policy and well, wasnāt it reassuring to be told your were realible? She felt safe in Umikoās company and well, she just wanted the worrying girl to realize that. Nothing bad was gonna happen - of course not! The good guys always came out on top, after all.
She smiled once again as she trotted to the door ahead of Umiko. "Come on! Itāll be fun! I bet some hot hot steamy waterās just what you need anyway!"
Subaru's... everything, from the smile on her face to the nonchalant way she skipped over to the gym doors by which Umiko was huddled, threw the cryptozoologist for a loop. How could she be so jovial at a time like this? Sure, she didn't have a problem looking after Subaru (she laughed bitterly again, this time mentally), but that didn't mean the other pairings were as content as she and the mangaka were. She was drawn back to the here and now by Subaru telling her that Noro and Teku were nowhere to be found, at least in the gym.Ā "Mhnm."Ā Just because they'd been here before definitely didn't mean they would be now, but she'd still had hope.Ā "I'm... not that fond of them either," she replied distractedly. If they weren't here, then whereā
But Oshima-san spoke again, causing Umi to frown. If someoneĀ did decide to kill, she herself would likelyĀ end up as a ghost. The next words out of Subaru's mouth, however, caused her to pause.Ā "I... suppose you do have a point, but... we can't know if the other groups are as peaceful as our own."Ā She did trust most of them, or at least wanted to. However, at least one of them, the boy she'd had the confrontation with in the hallway... she could easily see him murdering. It wasn't hard for her mind to take that a step further.Ā Would he kill her? She couldn't be 100% sure, but after his words and his actions, she thought it likely that he might at least try at one point. She gripped her cane tighter.
Again, Subaru drew her back out of her negative thoughts, this time with a jerk on her sleeve. She looked back to the mangaka, who'd perked up considerably. The idea that had caused her to do so however, caused Umi to freeze.Ā "O-Oshima-san, I'm not sure that's the best idea, I don't do well around water..."Ā Her grasp on the cane tightened even more, but Subaru seemed unaware. Onodera...-nee? Umi felt her face heat up slightly.Ā "Oshima-san, if someone came after you, I don't think I would be able to protect you,"Ā she admitted, shifting slightly as Subaru rushed past her to the door. Perhaps she could talk some sense into the mangaka, andā
Or not.Ā "...coming,"Ā Umi responded, using her cane as a pivot in order to turn back the way she'd just come. If she wanted Subaru, and by extension herself, to stay alive, she'd had to follow the other, right? Umi wasn't fond of deep water at all, but at the moment it didn't seem like she had a choice.

Believe in the You That Protects Me
Ugh, this was so boring! Subaruās eyebrows were knit in a kind of frustration and her entire face felt tight. Her fingers were itching for a pen to hold. Or at least, something fun to read. Being stuffed here with no good company and no access to anything of any interest was beginning to make her feel a little lightheaded somehow. Well, lightheaded and a little grumpy too, anyway. Suddenly, the sound system crackled with sound. Seems like TV head-tachi were back and up to no good again. What would it be this time?
"Hnn?" she perked her head up at the familiar voice⦠well voices. She had to admit, Teku-tan was easier to get fed up with given its choice of tempo but both had been speaking and honestly she supposed both bots were kind of evil. Oh well. If this was their best effort to get them to murder each other it was kiiinda lame. But, well, she supposed it would be kind of excited being with a member of the Hope team. It seemed like she actually hadnāt come across many⦠there was Katsumi and probably a couple of others but meeting new ones was always fun. And yet, she wasnāt meeting a new one - a familiar name greeted her ears from the TV heads - Onodera Umiko. She smiled to herself - out of all the people to draw! It was good fortune, she was sure sheād be in good company with Umiko. Subaru threw her arms behind her head looking the picture of relaxation.
"Onodera-saaaaaaaan, did you catch that?"Ā Subaru began to call, one hand cupped over her mouth as she stepped around, eyes alert for the familiar bespectacled girl. Maybe itād be fun hanging out with her. The idea that someone would come to murder her never even entered her mind - it was impossible to kill a hero after all, why even attempt? Not to mention youād really need a super degree in villainy to kill Umiko - she looked so pitiable and sad with that cane of hers. Really, once again, Subaru found there was absolutely nothing to worry about. The only thing she was fretting about now was how not to get bored! But hopefully some company would help that little dilemma.
Most of Umiko's conversations had petered off fairly quickly, and while it was possible that some of the other students were at fault for a few, most of the dropped talks were because of how distracted she was, how anxious. It was hard to have a conversation with someone you couldn't even be sure wasn't going to kill you. Her nonsensical argument with the needlessly enigmatic private eye (if that was what he really was) and her confrontation with the boy whose name she still didn't know hadn't left her in the best of moods. She'd been slowly making her way back to the common room, intent on resting her feet, when the speakers above crackled to life, and Umi froze. They were contacting them again? So soon?
The one with the less grating voice spoke first (she thought its name was Noro-dono, and a quick reminder of its voice pointing out her weakness was enough to confirm that thought), and the revelation that they hadn't been kidding about them having to murder each other caused her face to visibly pale.Ā "I... I didn't... hear anyone say that..."Ā Her words were meaningless to both the empty corridor and to the TV-headed twins, who continued on.Ā
Wait. Wait wait wait wait wait wait. She stared blankly up at the overhead speakers, brows furrowed almost angrily. Did they honestly expect her, in the condition she was in, to be able to protectĀ anyone? Despite the severity of the situation, Umi laughed. The laugh was not the most stable sound, and it ended quickly after it started. Subaru? She was supposed to protect Oshima-san? The mangaka was shorter than her, yes, but that was the only disadvantage the girl had in comparison to herself.Ā
Even as Teku-tan continued to read names together, the cryptozoologist had turned herself around and had started back toward the gym. She had to ask them if they were serious, expecting this of her. As she approached the gym, she heard neither of their distinct voices, but one she was familiar with: that of Subaru Oshima. Hesitantly, Umi poked her head inside the gym, and upon seeing Subaru, entered the rest of the way.Ā "O-Oshima-san? Have you seen either of our... headmasters? There must have been some sort of mistake."

Michael listened to Umiko describe the ningen in detail, resting his head in his hands again. Watching her get so in depth regarding her talent⦠It was actually both endearing and entertaining. She was so passionate⦠It was actually nice to see, in this bad place. After she was finished, he nodded, a small smile on his face. He waited for her to propose her dare, and then his eyes went wide.
"K-Kiss Wolpiā¦? Nein, Neinā¦" He put his hands up in surrender, staring down fearfully at the small stuffed creature. "I-I surrender, I canāt do thatā¦" He chuckled, holding his hand out for a victory shake. "Congratulations, Frau Umiko, youāve beaten the great Michael. Thatās quite the achievement, be sure to put it on your next resumĆ©." He grinned slyly, his tone playful.
Umiko was aware that there was a difference in how Michael listened to her ramblings on cryptids, and how certain other people (Katsumi came to mind) did, and she wasn't sure how much she liked that. It almost reminded her of the disconnect between how her parents would listen to her speak, and how her brother would simply mock her to her face. She supposed that was definitely something to watch the next time she talked to the Beauty Queen.Ā
"Nine...?"Ā There was a slight tone of trepidation to her voice, before she realized that whatever he meant, it wasn't the number. It was apparently some sort of negatory, though, because after that, he conceded the contest. Umi beamed widely, though that was hampered slightly by her hand being unsteady and she almost high fived him instead of giving a handshake. She was frowning intensely in concentration as she managed to finally shake his hand.Ā
The scowl was smoothed out afterward, though, as she pulled her hand back into her lap.Ā "It was a good game, Jordasch-san,"Ā she replied, hand wandering over to the wolpertinger. She should really get him back over to her own bed.

Juzou accepted the medallion brightly, the beam not leaving his face as he deftly pinned it next to the button that his yakuyoke charm hung from. They looked good together, he thought as he peered down at them, though it occurred to him he had little knowledge of what the second gift truly was. Travelling, Umiko had mentioned, though what it signified rang few bells as to its nature. Tilting the medallion upwards, Juzou squinted at the embossed script on its rim ā English, in what seemed to be a font archaically spiritual. Heād read Christian rites, but from Japanese books, and though his curiosity had imparted some knowledge of the stories and the saints he was admittedly uncertain as to the identity of the person on the medallion. Saint⦠the word, in Roman script, was unfamiliar, the rest unintelligible unless he spent an inordinate amount of time mulling over letters that would likely form words equally unfamiliar.
āIām sure it will,ā Juzou said, still smiling thinly, āthough Iāll admit you might have to educate me on why. This isā Christian, right? I was never any good at English, though the iconography seems familiar from, ah, experience.ā
He stopped himself before he could allude too strongly to Christian funerals, still wary of inspiring the same reaction as he had the first time heād mentioned his title. Conveniently, Umiko changed the topic for him before he could firmly place his foot in his mouth again.
āNot quite,ā he admitted to her next question, hoping that wouldnāt draw attention to the fact that that firmly struck out any possibility of him examining the kitchen knives for culinary purposes. āBut thereās⦠fourteen, fifteen⦠sixteen of us?ā He frowned for a moment, his counting slowed by the fact he could only identify most of them by characteristics rather than names or faces. The exact number mattered little at this point, regardless ā what was significant was the sheer numbers of them. If the āheadmastersā werenāt Hopeās Peakās administration, they must still have been enjoying Hopeās Peakās resources to be able to supply enough food and space for their entire class. āI imagine the kitchen is well-stocked, unless weāre meant to be dying of starvation.ā
The sound of her stomach, though he observed it uncritically, gave him a idea.
āIf youād likeāā Juzou started uncertainly, glancing towards the fridge again. āI could see what theyāve given us and try making something? Iām⦠n-not the best cook by any means! But I began making things for myself a while back, after I realised I couldnāt eat dead things anymore.ā
The sheer amount of glee with which the mortuary-tech accepted the medal made Umiko's smile grow even more, and it was probably the most genuine smile she'd had during the short time since they'd woken up in here. Something that helped that along was not having to pin it on Juzou herself; she wasn't steady with pins herself, and considering she'd already pricked herself on one, she wasn't too eager to try again this soon, especially on someone else. She watched him try to read the fancy script on the medal with curiosity written on her face. She herself knew what they were called, even if she couldn't pronounce it very well, but not much beyond that.Ā
His words brought her back to the subject of the medal, and she nodded at his deduction.Ā "Yes, it's the Catho... Catha... um."Ā She stopped for a moment to try and sound it out mentally, but that must've not gone well either.Ā "It's the part of, er, Christianity, with the man in white who wears the strange hat."Ā The rest of the information he'd asked for, though, she could tell him. Some of it, at least.Ā "It definitely brings luck to travelers. That's the main reason I have it. It... also is good for other things, but I'm not sure of them off the top of my head."
So he'd went straight to checking for dangerous things. If he truly had no intention to kill anyone, then his knowledge of the possible murder weapons could come in handy. She shifted awkwardly, nodding again to confirm his estimate (she'd checked the beds, and there were eight in the Hope dorm, so it made sense that Despair would have just as many).Ā
The point he brought up was a good one, and she was glad that his mind kept turning and he didn't bring up her stomach.Ā "O-oh! Perhaps I could help and-"Ā It almost seemed as if she was caught off-guard by the fact of her own disability, and the smile faded slightly.Ā "I could bring you things, if needed..."Ā Though his next sentence caught her off-guard, just a little.Ā "You're vegetarian?"Ā She'd started toward the fridge, intent on checking things out herself, but stopped herself just short of the handle in order to turn back and look up at him wonderingly. While she herself was not, nor was any member of her family, she really had nothing against it, so long as he wasn't about to preach to her about it.

Ach, she was blushing! That was so cute⦠Dispersing his thoughts,Ā Michael rested his head in his hands, engrossed in her story. āA ningen, hmm? Thatās so cool, that it saved you!ā He trailed off, taking her question into deep consideration. Well, he might as well change things up a bitā¦
"I choose dare! Nothing can scare me into losing this game⦠Unless itās those TV-headsā¦" He shuddered, before leaning back against the wall again. To be honest, he was really excited to see what Umiko might throw at him. Just the thought made him excited, remembering his younger days when he and his friends used to dare each other to do the craziest things⦠Although, he doubted Umiko would choose anythingĀ tooĀ horrible.
She nodded, surprised he'd heard of the creature... or he hadn't and he was just bluffing. Just to make sure, she took a few extra minutes to explain about the creatures, describing the almost humanoid-whale shape.Ā "I didn't know anything about them before... the accident, but after, when I woke up in the hospital, 'ningen'Ā was the first word out of my mouth. That's when I knew it had established a connection with me... and other cryptids as well."Ā
In honesty, she was somewhat worried about how he would react upon finding out about her link with the often fabled creatures. She still wasn't exactly sure how well Sakata-san had taken to it. She hoped that the singer would be a bit more open-minded.Ā
A... a dare? Umiko frowned. She'd... never been the best at giving dares, and her eyes darted around the room frantically, trying to find inspiration. They only briefly stopped on Wolpi, but she was thankful that they hadn't stayed longer, because it would've given her expert plan away.Ā "Okay. I dare you... toĀ kiss... Wolpi!"

Michael placed a hand on his heart dramatically, tilting his head back. āAch, thank goodness. No one can know about thatā¦ā After a moment he dropped his hand, bringing his gaze down to Umiko. āAnother truth, hmm? Be careful, I might start asking you for you life story! But, for a pretty girl like you, I might do that anyway.ā He grinned slyly, before scratching the side of his head in thought. What to ask this timeā¦? He figured he might as well stick with her talent and he dropped his hand, placing it with his other one in his lap. āAlso, your question is⦠How long have you been into Cr⦠Crypta⦠Crypkā¦. Ah, Cryptzoology! Thatās it! How long have you been doing that?ā
Even without the promise, the story would've only been one she'd shared had something like that become relevant, and even then she would've probably forgotten by the time it did come up. But with the promise, she made sure to try and forget the story as soon as possible. She nodded at his question, running a hand down Wolpi's back as she did so, but froze once he continued. Her hand gripped the preserved fur tightly, and she forced herself to let loose and smooth it back down before responding. Was... was he making fun of her? The blush on her face quite easily told him that his words had affected her, but she was still stuck on how genuine they were or were not.
"How long? Well... when I was six, I fell overboard on the boat my dad works on. I... I almost drowned. But I saw a ningen, and I believe that it saved me. Once I was in the hospital... things changed. Schoolwork didn't seem particularly important anymore, but cryptids were very, very important."Ā She fell silent for a moment before adding one more thing.Ā "After that, I've had a link with cryptids ever since."
The conversation had grown a bit somber, but despite that, Umi still smiled.Ā "Truth or dare, Jordasch-san?" she asked brightly.
