It had been the work of but a single blade. A dagger concealed up the sleeve of an unknown visitor to Dragonsreach who wanted to speak with them about something they had encountered on the roads of the hold. Balgruuf noticed the malicious intent before she did though, and pulled her out of the way when they went for her. The blade had only managed to slice through some of the loose fabric of her sleeve. And what did Balgruuf's good deed earn him? A blade in the gut. Of course their housecarls had been there, they acted straight away and couldn’t be faulted for anything with their response. But that person... Divines, they had been fast. Not quite fast enough to attempt to get her again, as Lydia had been quick in apprehending them. It was close though... Even as blood spread across his tunic faster than she had been able to try and stem it, he had been expressing his relief that she wasn’t hurt. Did he not realise that seeing him wounded in such a way hurt her just as much...? That was a thought she quickly had to discard, because that was all too unfair to him. Of course he did... It was why he had pulled her out of the way in the first place.
