I’m new to online fandom spaces so I’m probably missing something, but wouldn’t it be really hard for readers to not interact with content they dislike/are triggered by if an author chooses to only use “Dead Dove” as a general, vague warning? Like you mentioned muting/banning certain words, but don’t Tumblr and Ao3 only let you filter by tag, not words. I’m not saying the author is in the wrong for using the general warning but isn’t the statement “Readers should be able to avoid content they dislike, even if the trigger warning is so vague they don’t know if something they dislike is in the story” inherently a contradictory one?
Hello! Yeah... that's the biggest problem there is in this case: how to accomodate both authors that want to create freely, and readers that are sensitive to certain topics?
I do not know how to solve this. What I think would be best is a mechanism like I saw on a few socmed platforms: a blocklist, where you add words/tags - and posts with them get hidden for you. Here on Tumblr there's only blocking and the "Not interested in this post" / "Not interested in this community" options. On Ao3 there are only warnings.
So yeah... I don't know. But what I'm leaning towards is more freedom for the authors and more responsibility for the readers. I'm personally triggered by something very common, and also have to navigate spaces where it's often mentioned and people hardly ever add TW's for it. But it's an important problem you brought up... I wish platforms would add solutions for it, without censoring / preventing authors that want to create problematic stuff x_x
In this article you can find out what the term "Dead Dove: do not eat" stands for in various media, including written works, fanfiction, gam
I wrote an article on what Dead Dove content is, since I noticed that people don't often know. Enjoy!
