GENERAL INFORMATION
NAME: Ulises Lazarus Trant NICKNAME: "The Hanged Man" (a monicker that comes both from his house's sigil and also from his "return" from the dead) AGE: Thirty (Born December 31st, 114 AC) STATUS: Ruling Lord OCCUPATION: Ruling Lord of Gallowsgrey MARITAL STATUS: Unmarried CHARACTER ALIGNMENT: Pending MBTI: ISTP (introversion, sensing, thinking, perception) RELIGION: Faith of the Seven (variation aligned to the beliefs of those of the Last Rite)
RECENT HOUSE HISTORY & CULTURAL ELEMENTS:
The ruling lord of Trant, sworn to House Baratheon for many years, supported Princess Rhaenys' claim above anyone else's.
Other than their loyalty to House Baratheon, House Trant also kept close ties with House Velaryon in the last decades due to Princess Rhaenys' marriage into that house.
Due to Gallowsgrey's closeness to the sea, a lot of people grow up to become sailors and fishermen. House Trant has a small navy, although nowhere near as big or powerful as that of other sailing houses like House Velaryon, or House Redwyne in the Reach.
The Faith of the Seven is practiced in Gallowsgrey, however some older practices that possibly existed before have endured and mixed with the religion. The Seven are revered, but three deities stand out from the rest and are the ones most regional practices and prayer is focused on: the Father (as symbol of judgement, and creator of the storms), the Mother (as symbol of life, represented by a fair ocean), and the Stranger (as symbol of death's journey, represented by the uncertainty of of both sky and sea). This variation in their belief system and the specific cultural elements of House Trant are tied to those of the Last Rite and the Storm Cycle.
Hector Trant, Ulises' late father, was a staunch supporter of the Blacks during the Dance of the Dragons.
BIOGRAPHY:
Ulises Lazarus Trant was the firstborn son of Lord Hector and his wife, Lady Catalina, who had delivered a daughter a few years prior. Due to the complicated nature of Ulises’ birth, it was thought his mother would die on the childbed, but fortunately, she recuperated in time and went on to give her husband 5 more children until her passing in 125 AC due to a rare fever.
Ulises was born a healthy boy, but the Maester at Gallowsgrey worried for the child's fate, predicting that there would always be hardship in the boy’s life. His omen came because Ulises was born during the transition from the Gallows Days to the Drowned Moon season, according to their Storm Cycle calendar (A very ancient, circular stone that is intricately carved and serves as a lunar-and-sea calendar wheel that tracks the seasons and is very tightly linked to local beliefs).
He grew up a clever and curious boy, paying attention to his classes, training with the sword and shorter blades, and developing a mind that ran a mile a minute with the wish to know more. He didn't wish to learn just for knowledge’s sake, but to test that knowledge and put it to the test in practical ways. This trait of his ended up saving his life later on.
In 132 AC, during the Battle of the Gullet, Ulises sailed alongside the Velaryon fleet. In the chaos of the battle, Lord Hector Tarth perished, and Ulises nearly drowned, ending up drifting on the shipwrecked pieces of wood for 33 days. He survived by filtering salt out of ocean water through a method learned from the Maester at home, using sunlight and cloth layers of his shirt. He managed to feed himself on the occasional fish he could catch with a makeshift tool he built with what he had at hand.
Ulises was declared dead for the period of time he was lost at sea, and his younger brother, Victor, succeeded their late father as the new Ruling Lord of Gallowsgrey during that time. Ulises managed to return home when a trading ship that had departed from Andalos saw him floating in the middle of the ocean. Upon his return, the title his younger brother had just received was stripped from him, and Ulises was named the rightful ruling lord.
He has never talked much to his siblings about what he went through during his time lost at sea, but everyone who knew him well before claims that Ulises returned a changed man in some way. The Hanged Man, some began to call him. A man who took a step into death's journey, but somehow returned alive.
Ulises and Victor supported Lord Pearse Caron in his attempt at a revolution when the realm of the Stormlands was annexed to the Crownlands during Queen Daenerys’ rule. Ultimately, Ulises withdrew his house's support when it became clear that Caron was walking into his death. Victor, however, did not obey and blindly walked with Pearse to the end, ultimately being charged with treason by Queen Daenerys and was executed. To protect the rest of his siblings and keep his people safe, Ulises had to forsake his brother and decry his actions, thus sparing his house from a similar fate as House Caron.
At present, Ulises is satisfied with the fact that Queen Daenerys is gone, though he is in no way glad that the realm he grew up in is no longer ruled by Baratheons and is instead in the hands of a Green Targaryen. He's seen an attempt at revolution fail already, one that had a personal cost yet again. He is doing what he can to protect his family, so he has been playing his part. Since Jaehaerys claimed the throne, he's kept a somewhat low profile, focusing only on preserving House Trant. He prays the wheel keeps turning and the Stormlands can once again be ruled by true people of the region.
