history
aemon is the second of five children born to lord corlys velaryon and rhaenys targaryen and named for his maternal grandfather. as a child, he was closer to his mother than his father. as a second son, he did not shoulder the burden of inheritance, but expectations were still high.
always a bright child, aemon was undoubtedly high-energy. something of a dare-devil, he was known to be quite naughty, always getting into things he shouldn’t, and never able to sit still.
he was still young, around ten years old, when aemon took a fall from the deck of his father’s ships, ending up submerged in the water. though he was eventually fished out, the waves were rough that day, and he had been dragged under by them, and thought he was going to die.
the events of that day had a large impact on aemon, instilling in him a phobia that’s followed him to adulthood - he is deathly afraid of the water. to this day, he has travelled by ship only a handful of times, and hated every second of it. he isn’t just afraid of sailing - even the sound of the waves is enough to bring him out in a cold sweat, and he cannot even stomach standing on a beach, making life on driftmark nearly unbearable.
due to his fear of the water, aemon left driftmark when he was still young, and ended up squiring in king’s landing, where he still lives to this day. His phobia is not a well-kept secret. most have deduced that it exists, and it is a source of mockery from some.
aemon has been at court most of his life, and is well-versed in playing the political game. he’s watched various members of the targaryen family take the throne, and always managed to remain a mainstay of life in the red keep.
his fear of water has the side effect of giving aemon a bit of an inferiority complex. the velaryons are known for their skill with water, and aemon cannot bring himself to go anywhere near the sea. he feels like a disappointment, so he funnels his energies into chasing perfection in other ways. he can get frustrated when he isn’t good at something.
being away from home during the outbreak of the dance was both a blessing and a curse for aemon. as the velaryons had declared for the blacks, he had to flee king’s landing in the early days of war, leaving his dragon behind in the dragon pit, where it was later killed. However, his presence in the crownlands, away from driftmark and dragonstone, allowed him to aid the blacks by amassing forces on the mainland, his silver tongue coming in handy to rally troops to rhaenyra’s banner.
war wasn’t kind to house velaryon, and by the end of it, aemon no longer cared who won and who lost. when it was over, he returned to king’s landing, eager to start rebuilding his life. he has remained in residence there ever since, outlasting several monarchs.
beyond social matters and politics, one area where aemon shines made itself known during the dance, where he discovered he had a talent for breaking sieges. since he cannot command ships, it is somewhat ironic that he is gifted when it comes to holding ground. he has a good instinct for weak spots in castle walls, psychological tactics to force surrenders, and how to turn the tide in his favour to flush out the occupants of a keep under siege.
house velaryon has been touched by a lot of loss - both his parents in the dance, his brother after, and more recently, deimos’ wife. aemon mourned their deaths, but takes a “get on with it” sort of approach to his grief.
over the years, aemon has become something of a socialite, most known for being a fashionable and well-cultured man rather than any of his achievements. he is one of the few constants in the red keep, having seen the rise and fall of several monarchs and remained standing. over the years, he has positioned himself as the trendsetter of the capital - his choice in clothes is often replicated by other men, and he’s a known patron of artists. he is big on culture, and believes there is power to it.
for some time, aemon has been engaged to vivienne penrose, the heiress to parchments in the stormlands. when he brother was legitimised, and usurped her place as the ruler of parchments, there was some talk about ending the betrothal. aemon refused this, reasoning that he made a promise and intending to see it through.
personality
basics
aemon can be considered a social figure, very outgoing, and can be charming when he puts his mind to it. he’s very much the sort of person who knows everyone. he is very focused on fitting in.
he can be a bit of a people pleaser, and doesn’t like being disliked. incredibly image conscious, how he looks, how he presents himself, and what people think of him are all very important to aemon. he is known for being fashionable, but not in the way that follows trends. often, aemon is the one to set them. meticulously dressed, groomed, and styled, his wardrobe is a carefully curated masterpiece. whether it’s his clothes, the music he’s listening to, or what sort of book he’s reading, aemon is considered a man of good taste, and when he starts doing something, it is not long before others follow his lead.
though his wit and charm are his dominant personality traits, aemon is both politically savvy and very good at self preservation. he’s not the sort to go head to head with someone when he disagrees with them - his style is more about playing people at their own game, making them think they are on the same page, and then trying to change their mind subtly through his persuasive skills.
he can be a little over-cautious. It’s difficult to get him to truly open up and speak his mind, and he can come across as non-committal as a result.
aemon is a perfectionist, but only when it comes to himself. he needs to be good at things, and can easily get irritated when he isn’t.
aemon is very witty, but does have a tendency towards sarcasm and cynicism.

fears
his fear of water is his most visceral fear, and he point blank avoids situations that bring him near to seas and rivers.
his fear of water branches into other aspects of his life - to not being good enough, or disappointing those who care for him.
there’s also a bit of a fear of intimacy. aemon is a friend to many, but not many beyond his family truly know who he is at his core.

other
politically, aemon is quite switched on, but where he’s particularly adept is in the propaganda game. one thing he is good at is influencing opinions, and it comes very naturally to him.
aemon isn’t just a frivolous courtier - he is a man who has turned perception into power, leveraging his status as a social figure to his advantage.
he has a large collection of colognes, and always smells good.
he doesn’t sleep well unless it’s on sheets of silk, cause he’s a bougie bastard. he will not drink cheap wine, or eat a meal below his standards.
he remembers insults towards him perfectly, but conveniently forgets his own mistakes unless someone calls him out.
no matter where he is, he lounges like it’s his own chambers - legs stretched out, arms draped, completely at ease.
he is an incredible dancer.
he is a night owl, and struggles waking up in the morning. If he had his way, he would go to bed at sunrise and sleep until the afternoon.
he was once given a nude portrait of himself by an admirer. he thinks it’s hilarious, and kept it, though it is not on display in his rooms.
